Defensive Driving School of Mercer Island

Located in Mercer Island, the Defensive Driving School of Mercer Island is a premier destination for comprehensive driver education, offering a wide array of courses designed to build confidence and safety behind the wheel. As a trusted institution with a long history in Washington state, the school provides both online and in-person instruction, ensuring flexibility for students with busy schedules. While the Mercer Island location serves primarily as a testing center and classroom for knowledge tests—operating by appointment only—their main staffed office is located in nearby Kirkland, with a call center available six days a week to assist with inquiries.

The school’s curriculum is tailored to meet diverse needs, from new teens acquiring their first permit to experienced adults seeking to renew licenses or improve their skills. For teenagers, the program includes a 30-hour state-mandated curriculum delivered via engaging Zoom sessions, supplemented by self-paced Driver Awareness Training, private driving lessons, and parental observation. The school strongly encourages parental involvement, offering a dedicated parent information session to ensure families are aligned in the learning process. For those with unique learning requirements, an Individualized Driving Program (IDP) provides extra time and support to ensure every student succeeds.

Beyond basic licensing, the Defensive Driving School of Mercer Island offers an extensive range of specialty courses, including collision avoidance techniques, defensive driving, and specialized training for fleet drivers and those with disabilities. They also provide continuing education classes approved by courts and insurance companies, stick shift training, and even unique experiences like driving the Tesla. Students can prepare for their Department of Licensing knowledge and road tests with expert guidance, ensuring they are fully prepared for success. With a vast network of locations across King, Snohomish, Thurston, Kitsap, Skagit, Spokane, Grant, and Eastern Washington counties, the school is committed to making high-quality driver education accessible to the entire community.
