Fantastic experience: I had a hard time passing the test with the help of parents so I decided to take lessons at Silver Lake Driving School and it was the best decision I made!! I ended up passing my test all thanks to my instructor Darrin. He was very helpful in teaching me in the areas that i needed work in, very funny and helped me gain confidence in my driving abilities. I highly recommend this driving school.

Negative experience: A couple months ago, I had lessons here, and working with Virak was a nightmare. This review cuts out some of everything he said to me, but I'm leaving in the worst parts. Virak seemed hostile the moment I got in the car, but I tried my best to be kind because I really wanted to learn. We had a short conversation about my goals with getting a license. He seemed upset with the fact I didn't have my own car and had to use a family members, when that doesn’t really have anything to do with learning how to drive and seemed pointless to bring up, it just made me feel ashamed. I wanted to start from getting used to the controls and Virak got very upset with me for not knowing where the button to adjust the mirror was. The car was a more modern car than I was used to, and he never told me where to look. When I was having a hard time Virak told me “you don’t have common sense”. He then started talking about how I shouldn’t expect to be spoon fed everything. I am already a pretty timid and anxious person so having my instructor talk down to me this way felt extremely humiliating. Also to note, half the time Virak was supposed to be helping me, he was just fiddling on his phone and not paying attention. Other reviews on Virak seem very positive, so I was left confused because that was the exact opposite experience that I received. Quite frankly it left me feeling discriminated against. I had to leave the car instead of continuing the lesson, or I would’ve said things that I shouldn't've. Luckily Matt, the owner, was able to sort things out by being my instructor instead. Matt was the polar opposite of Virak, he was kind, and despite me having extreme ADHD and getting distracted and overwhelmed constantly, he never made me feel ashamed. When I was with Virak, I didn’t think I would even be able to start the car. With Matt, I was able to drive on the scariest roads. Unfortunately I don't think I will be coming back to this school because of my experience with Virak, but I highly recommend Matt, especially if you’re a nervous driver like me!

Fantastic experience: Great place to learn how to drive. They have a lot of patience and tricks for all sorts of situations, 10/10 experience. Also it was easy to schedule. I have had sessions with three different instructors, they all have their individual styles and tricks for doing things. Got my license done this monday.

Fantastic experience: If you are any type of driver, especially first timer and nervous driver. Pick this school and ask for Darren as your instructor. I got a chance to take lesson with Darren as my first lesson behind the wheel ever as a adult. I was so nervous at first, so you can imagine all of the negativities and scary thoughts before taking the lesson. But wow, session with Darren changed my perspective already. Within first session, i was so comfortable controlling the wheel, even went on a highway switching lanes, and also was able to squeeze some minutes of learning how to park. I will take more sessions with Darren to gain more confidence. If you are any type of driver, especially first timer and nervous driver. Pick this school and ask for Darren as your instructor.

Fantastic experience: Thank you, Matt and Virak, for helping my son pass his driving test after a bad experience with another driving school. I really appreciate your working with him and helping him learn what he needed to pass. It really helped to have him record himself saying what to do in each situation. His confidence has grown and now he is able to really move forward in life with this newfound opportunity to drive. The person who took my reservation was so polite and helpful, even when I had to move around my lessons later. My instructor, Virak, was amazing as well! He is firm but fair, which is exactly what you need to get all the good habits for driving. I had three lessons with him with no prior driving experience, and I passed my road test on my first go.

Fantastic experience: After failing my road test at Plymouth 3 times, I decided to look into driving lessons. I got the chance to work with Virak. All the things that I was doing wrong before, he helped me clean them up, and all it took was four days. I really enjoyed working with him. He's an excellent instructor. I learned a lot of tips and techniques. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have passed my road test today! Great service, great instructor, reasonable price.

Fantastic experience: One of the best driving schools in MSP! Fortunately, I had a chance to take lessons from Steve, Virak, and Matt. They taught me how to be a safe driver and how to not get super stressed during the exam. I highly recommend if anyone is like me an adult who never drove before to take classes from them. I took 4 driving classes and instructor is Norm. Norm is very professional and patient in teaching. After passing the road test , I feel like I took the driving classes from real dmv examiner.. because all the possible situations in real road test has been thought by Norm. Fantastic experience: Best driving school in the metro without a doubt. My son went here years ago and had a great experience. However, my daughter went to another "big name" driving school with friends. Their class instruction was fine but they were absolutely impossible to schedule behind-the-wheel time with. After trying for months to get time, I turned to Silver Lake Driving School who immediately got my daughter her hours in and helped her to pass her test first time. Great school and very helpful people.

Fantastic experience: I had 7 lessons at this school and the instructor, Darrin was a great teacher. He has an excellent methodology to teach and is great that he has experience teaching immigrants like me. I recommend this driving school for adults who need to learn driving.

Fantastic experience: I learned how to drive a standard car 16 years ago in a different country. Even back then my driving experience was limited and stopped driving 15 years ago after losing friends in car accidents. Norm was very patient with me and he was a great instructor. After 3 sessions with Norm I was able to pass my road test on my first try. Matt at the office was very accommodating and made sure that there would be car available on my test day. I highly recommend this place.

Fantastic experience: Mr. Makis drivers education class is so educational he gets you engaged in the lessons by sharing life stories ,sharing videos ,and asking questions and it’s flexible if you need to miss a class all you need to do is let him know and you can retake that lesson # later on. if you’re looking for a drivers Ed class I recommend this one!

Fantastic experience: Silver lake driving school is a great driving school for teens in general and those looking to achieve a permit using a permit class. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. The teacher is kind, nice, funny, and always has a smile, which is welcoming and makes you feel not left out. My sister passed her test in one try and I am also very prepared because of the preparation Mr.Maki makes. He always shares life stories, notes, and it makes it easy to memorize and study the permit test materials. Overall, it is a wonderful driving school, including the teachers, and homework that is given. 100%

Fantastic experience: Amazing driving school for new learners. I started off not knowing the difference between the brake and the gas pedal. Matt was patient with me and taught me all that I needed to know to pass my road test! He jokes around a lot which makes the drive less awkward and helps you loosen up. I highly recommend taking lessons with him!

Fantastic experience: I am so happy I decided to take classes in this driving school. When I came to the US for my studies at the university I never thought I would really need to drive and back then I thought it would be a waste of my (already low) funds. But very soon I realized that driving skills are very necessary and that confidence can take time to develop so I decided to try some classes. Now, I think taking driving lessons was the best investment of my grad student stipend XD Once I got my learner's permit I started classes with Norm and and I have to say HE IS THE BEST! I never thought I would meet a person that is more patient than my mom but here he is! I felt super comfortable asking questions and trying new skills every week. I took way more classes than the average student. Once I felt confident in roads with less traffic we started focusing on more stressful environments, so each class was a new opportunity to learn or experience something new that I wouldn't be able to manage alone at my driving skills level. Norm helped me push the boundaries and get used to the "average road idiot". The road is filled with maniacs but when I took classes with Norm I knew he could get me through dangerous situations that I wouldn't have been able to handle alone so well. I learned a lot :) I am very proud to say that a month or so ago I passed my road test with 97/100. Norm says it was all my work but I truly believe that he had a key role in my learning experience and building my confidence. I barely felt nervous that day. I am planning to continue classes now to practice more on the highways. They scare the SH.. out of me (they are indeed full of idiots on their phones) but I know that by taking classes with Norm I will finally get that practice I need to build confidence at those high speeds as well and learn about ways to drive defensively and avoid stupid/selfish people. TL,DR : TAKE CLASSES WITH NORM, HE IS THE BEST.

Fantastic experience: I had an amazing experience with SLDS!! I had failed two previous exams and have a lot of driving anxiety which made me drive very hesitantly. The instructor was very patient and supportive and he walked me through everything I was doing correctly and what I could improve on. We went directly to the Arden Hills test site after our lesson and his confidence in me and all the pointers he gave me allowed me to go through the exam with little or no trouble. I can’t thank them enough!

He knows what it takes to not only pass the DMV road test, but also to be a safe driver in the long run. He will train you, test you, and give it his everything to ensure you learn and sharpen your driving skills. And when you are ready, he will let you know. His best quality is that he doesn’t sugarcoat anything but tells you everything honestly and in a straightforward manner.
