Our comment from DrivingSchools.Directory about John's Driving School:
Proven success with top-rated instructors
John's Driving School in Minneapolis has built a strong reputation for helping students achieve their driving goals, particularly through the exceptional instruction provided by key team members. While the school offers a range of programs, the standout feature for many alumni is the dedicated teaching staff, especially instructors like David Jr. and Franny, who are consistently praised for their patience, professionalism, and ability to connect with teenage learners.
A teaching style that builds confidence
Students frequently highlight how the instructors create a supportive and stress-free learning environment. David Jr., in particular, is described as a "phenomenal coach" who not only teaches driving skills but also instills confidence. His approach is noted for being clear, patient, and effective, helping nervous students feel comfortable behind the wheel. He provides detailed, constructive feedback that allows students to understand exactly what they need to improve, turning potential anxiety into preparedness.
- Defensive Driving Focus: Instructors emphasize safe, defensive driving habits that last a lifetime, rather than just passing the test.
- Personalized Attention: Students report that instructors take the time to explain the "why" behind techniques, ensuring deep understanding.
- Parental Communication: Several reviews mention that instructors keep parents informed about scheduling and progress, providing peace of mind.
High pass rates and comprehensive preparation
The results speak for themselves: a significant number of students report passing both their permit and road tests on the first attempt. This success is attributed to a balanced curriculum that combines informative classroom sessions (often praised for being engaging and fun, thanks to instructors like Franny) with practical, hands-on behind-the-wheel training. The school's flexibility in scheduling also helps accommodate the busy lives of students, ensuring they can learn at a pace that works for them.
For those seeking a driving education that prioritizes safety, confidence, and a positive student experience, John's Driving School stands out as a reliable choice, with many families recommending it highly for its dedicated instructors and proven track record of student success.

Negative experience: I would leave 0 stars if I could. My older son went here and had a great experience. The company was sold to new management this past October and I have never had such bad customer service and an experience. My younger son signed up for a behind the wheel lesson. He was to meet the driving instructor at Irondale high school. The driving instructor was 10 minutes late. When he arrived, he asked my son for his learner's permit. My son forgot it and called me to bring it up to him. I live 5 mins away and was preparing to leave and bring it to them. I wasted no time at all. Before I could even leave the house, the instructor said "nope, you don't have your permit, we're cancelling the lesson for today and you will be charged the full amount". It's important to note that they mention a 10-15 min grace period in case someone may be late, as life happens, and someone may be running a little behind. With that being said, I don't see the problem for waiting 5 mins while the permit would have been delivered. This is common sense. Your instructor was late and then couldn't wait 5 mins for us to bring the permit up there? That's ridiculous. On top of that, when talking to John's driving school, they were extremely rude and not helpful at all. I believe his words were "welp, oh well, we're not going to do anything about it". Seems like a pretty dumb decision for a small community driving school to treat their community like garbage. Goes around, comes around. Avoid this place like the plague. There are plenty of other options that won't treat you like crap and rob you for every possible dollar they can such as Teens Driving school in Arden Hills and Silver Lake driving school in New Brighton.
Negative experience: I had an extremely disappointing and uncomfortable experience at John’s Driving School. The instructor made inappropriate and racist remarks during my lessons, which made me feel unwelcome and disrespected. A driving school should be a supportive environment, but this was anything but. If you’re looking for a place that treats all students with fairness and respect, I highly recommend going elsewhere.
Negative experience: Horrible customer service!!! Rude and uncooperative after canceling my son's lesson and not giving me my money back. Instructor was late and then refused to wait 5 minutes for my husband to bring my sons permit. Which is required for the lesson but like busy human beings do, he forgot it and they canceled the whole 2 hours instead of waiting five minutes for the permit to get there. I tried to call and work something out with them and the rude individual on the phone stated there's a 15 minute grace period to get the permit and when I said we would've made the grace period if the instructor wasn't late, he changed the story to saying the lesson just gets canceled. He would not acknowledge that his staff member was late. Nowhere in the email does it state that the lesson just gets canceled with no permit. Would not recommend this business to anyone because as we know, life happens and a business should be willing to work with their customers. Instead he hung up on me.
Fantastic experience: I was struggling with parking spaces until I took initiative and contacted David Jr from John’s driving school. It was the best decision because learning from him I became a safe and sensible driver while mastering my parking spaces!
Fantastic experience: If you're looking for a reliable and professional driving school, I highly recommend John Driving School. My instructor, David Jr., was exceptional. His teaching methods are clear, patient, and effective, making the learning process smooth and enjoyable. Under his guidance, I gained confidence and skill behind the wheel. Choose John Driving School, and ask for David Jr. to ensure a top-notch driving education experience.
