Top Driver Driving School: Reviews
Negative experience: The in classroom instruction is great. However, if you are trying to get behind the wheel driving lessons, good luck. Every month I am on their website for hours at a time- you would think I’m trying to score Taylor Swift concert tickets. It’s extremely frustrating.
Negative experience: The experience with Top Driver is sufficient to meet the IL legal requirements for obtaining a license; however, I would look elsewhere before enrolling here. (1) Scheduling drives is an exercise in frustration. It is managed via portal with schedule refresh once a month, during the middle of the day, on a Wednesday. If you aren't available to login at that moment, you will be locked out of scheduling until the next month as appointments are all full. (2) When attempting to get additional information on pick up / drop off locations (home vs at the school) or to resolve scheduling issues, calls are routed to their corporate staff who do not have any more information than what is already in the portal and who are not supportive in finding solutions. (3) As a final note on the experience, my child lost confidence in driving after the first experience of road lessons with this school. The instructor suggested there was not adequate prior experience for my child to sign up for in-car lessons and that the students should develop their driving skills before attending in-car lessons with the school. My child had driven with me for many hours prior to this lesson, but was nervous and therefore very cautious in driving. My conclusion from this is it seems they have lost sight of the exact point of driving school (i.e., to provide experience and to teach) and they respond to this by giving pressure to the teens to learn first elsewhere. At this point, we have paid to fulfill the state requirement but haven't found much other value in working with Top Driver.
Negative experience: They have no classes for my area unprofessional. They’re located in Libertyville and I’m located in Mundin they say we’re out of district.

Negative experience: Horrible experience attempting to get drives done. Website crashes every day the scheduling portal opens. They shifted us to a different classroom because they overbooked the class. They let us book the class and then kicked us out. No problem taking our money and then not delivering on the services.

Fantastic experience: The teachers are super chill and good at teaching but car rides with Mr. Miller were my favorite he did a great job at teaching me how to drive and he made the lessons fun (no offense to the other teachers y’all were still chill).

Negative experience: Hard to find driving lessons, I’ve looked a month and a half to schedule my last lesson. Some of my driving lessons were 45 minutes long instead of 1 hour. I would definitely look somewhere else next time.

Positive experience: As long as you show up to class and follow through with your appointments, there should you should have no incidents with their program. The only reason I give the program 4 stars was based on my personal experiences with the fellow students in class who were incredibly disruptive, obnoxious, and rude. However that is not the fault of the program, rather the students in my class.

Negative experience: Terrible company policies. While the teachers and staff are great, remember that Top Driver is a business to make money and will trap you into doing so. Their online scheduling system fills up very quickly forcing you to rush and refresh the page constantly to get a appointment. Then you MUST be aware that there is a fee for everything. One such fee is the No-show fee which is $45 and charged if you do not show up (even if you became sick or had an emergency come up) and cancellation/rescheduling fee. PLEASE read the policy page and understand that these are all money making traps. Also if you do find a time to do some behind the wheel training and want to reschedule, the customer service is the one that also determines if you have contacted them with appropriate notice (meaning they can refuse at their will and charge you another fee). The entire Program refund policy is also less than ideal (my mistake for not looking into it) but not all of your money is refunded incentivizing you to continue their program and incur further losses. PLEASE be patient and try to find an opening at a school driving course which is a fraction of the cost and not done for profit. For a private driving school they resort to scummy money-making tactics. Top driver May respond to this and advise contacting customer service, but the customer service is also terrible. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Fantastic experience: This can be a challenging process between Sec. of State rules, hectic schedules, and unforeseen changes - this location was extremely helpful in outlining policies and providing options! I rarely write public reviews - but - Ralph went out of his way to help us with some scheduling challenges. And, my daughter actually looked forward to her rides, especially when they were with Mr. Niedrich - who made the rides "fun" and meaningful. Thank You!

Thank you for the kind words about our instructor team - they are some of the best. We apologize that you were unaware of the licensing process - that information is provided in our Welcome Packet and is included in our Last Drive handout. Since your daughter just completed her last drive this week it would normally take 10 days for our Customer Service group to receive her completed white card, ensure all program requirements are met and then send the Certificate of Completion to the Secretary of State. The Secretary of State requires at least 10-14 days following receipt of the Certificate of Completion for their processing. In your daughter's case, Customer Service expedited the processing on our end and you now can check the SOS's website for their processing to be finished so that she can go to the DMV to take her licensing exam. Fantastic experience: BOTH OF OUR BOYS HAVE GOTTEN THEIR DRIVING CERTIFICATION THROUGH TOP DRIVER. Fantastic experience: Competent driving instruction for my teen. He didn't love going to class, but the instructors seem to have done their best to make it palatable. They gave him good in-car instruction. Although we supposedly were in the area to get pick-ups and dropoffs at home for the driving lessons, it seemed none of those slots were ever available.

Negative experience: You better refund my daughter's money much more quickly than 7-14 business days. You keep putting her off in-vehicle training, and now you have to *approve* her refund? Oh no. I will help her file a petition in Small Claims if she doesn't get her money ASAP. Supposedly, you no longer service our locale.

I apologize for the misunderstanding regarding your daughter's Adult program registration. I understand that she successfully completed the online course but that there was not an instructor available for behind the wheel after she was ready for drives. Instructor hours have been added in your region for Adult lessons and I believe Customer Service has contacted you regarding scheduling for your daughter.

Negative experience: Extremely disappointed with the service. The online sign up system does not work properly. It is not intuitive and when you cancel it does not allow you to rescheule. My dd took lessons her missed one because we were confused if they were coming to our house or the driving center and as a result we missed it and forfeited the lesson. The last lesson, they told her she graduated and took her for ice cream. Two months later I get an email stating I owe them $150 plus $40 for the missed lesson. These were EXTRA lessons we paid for. The CS rep said they would deny my dd licencese and hold it hostage if I didnt pay. After explaining that in the last messin the teacher said she graduated, we agreed that I would pay $20 as settlement and scheduled last two lessons ( thought we only had one) . I told her we may have to reschedule the second one because I was not sure of the time. She said that is fine as long as I do it 24 hours in advance. I tried or 45 min to reschedule online. The system would not let me and canceled the lesson. Then I get an email saying we owe $150 to reinstate. This is not right. We followed the rules and this is a racket trying to charge us more for lesson we really did not need nor did we think had. Their number says they are closed and so we sent an email to try and reschedule and now they send an email stating we owe $150. This is not a place we will send our other daughter next year. .
