Defensive Driving School of Seattle (U-District)

Negative experience: I got lessons from them, but they expired. I asked to reinstate them with proof. This company just wants your money and will only give you a $50 discount, that’s literally the tax. They actually got back to me in a timely manner. Don’t get lessons from them unless you’re absolutely sure you will be taking their lessons within the 3 month period. I will never be going here thanks for wasting my time and money.

Negative experience: At least some instructors at the U District location of the Defensive Driving School are illegally parking in the bike lane in the front of their location. A driving school should set an exemplary example of only parking legally and safely, not endangering cyclists and implicitly teaching its students to do the same.

Negative experience: You have to wait for the knowledge test on the street, no place to sit or restroom available. That's inadmissible for pregnant people, like me, and older ones. 10 minutes for the test time and still on the sidewalk of the building. Unbelievable!

Negative experience: Me and my wife(pregnant at the time) got there 20 minutes earlier for our test appointment and had to wait outside.

Fantastic experience: Jimmy is so good. He is a careful and patient examiner, will help you relieve anxiety, the whole exam atmosphere is very relaxed, highly recommended!!!

Fantastic experience: Took the warm-up and test with Jimmy, and would recommend him and the driving school. The school admin was great when I mistakenly booked just the test and asked to change it to include a warm-up. It was easily done via email. For the test appointment they were running about 15mins behind schedule but Jimmy was still very patient and explained any errors during the warm-up and tips to be mindful of before moving on to the test. His calm demeanor and clear instructions make a conducive environment for testing.

Fantastic experience: It's a very nice place to take your driver's lessons and do the test. The instructions are very nice. Lukas, Bryan, and Chris taught me a lot, and Jimmy is the most patient person ever!

Fantastic experience: Highly recommend you to learn to drive at here! Jimmy Green is already a famous instructor on the Internet. The whole skill test atmosphere is very good, not nervous at all, on the contrary, the chat is very pleasant. After the test, you will recap some details and errors that need attention. After all, even after passing the test, there will be some mistakes that may occur in driving later in life.

Fantastic experience: Better than other driving classes, where you get old cars that are poorly maintained I took knowledge test, skills test and five driving classes here and their techniques were amazing it made driving easy. Bryan is hands down one of the best instructor plus his car is well maintained. I was recommend by my friend for this driving school and am that i went here the parallel parking technique is the best! Only drawback is that you do not have a waiting area where you can sit, so if you are early you will have to keep standing till your lesson begins.

Fantastic experience: I had a warm-up & road test with Jim today. Thanks to his kindness and patience, the whole test was relatively smooth for me. I also appreciate the valuable 7 hours I took with Bryan and Chris for their helpful instruction. Although I passed the test on my first try, the deductions were definitely a sign for me to pay more attention to vision on the road, which is one of the most important things in defensive driving. Keeping Jim's words in mind, I'll practice more and become a responsible driver. Driving is gonna be a lifelong journey, and I'm happy I started my first few hours here!

I had never driven before as an adult, and I was very scared to start learning how to drive. I took the 5-class package twice, totaling 10 classes with Bryan Davis at Seattle U District , and it changed my life for the better. I’m incredibly grateful to him; his patience and calm demeanor gave me the confidence to start from the basics. He was very patient and provided all the necessary knowledge. I wasn't very confident until the 6th class, but from the 7th, I improved significantly, all thanks to him! I passed my test on the first attempt, and I cannot thank this school enough. Fantastic experience: I would like to thank Instructor Jimmy Green. Today I was at the driving school for warm up practice and to take my skills test and Jimmy Green was my Instructor. I am overly cautious in my driving so I drove slowly and Jimmy was very patient in explaining the significance of the speed limit, the reason why you can't go too slow and the reason why you can't go too fast. Instructors always tell you what to do, but not every instructor patiently explains the reasons for doing so. I gradually became less nervous. Then at a busy 4-way stop junction, Instructor Jimmy again showed his patience and friendliness. As I completed my complete stop before the intersection, which was a bit busy, I was cautious and my car was a bit slow to start, Jimmy waved his hand to a car waiting on the left side of the intersection and apologized for the wait. He also explained the steps of parrallel parking to me in the subsequent parking practice, which was the least practiced item for me, his guidance was very useful as I did much better in the subsequent test, even though I didn't do it perfectly , I know that I'm using the right method and I'll be able to do it much better after a little bit of practice. I tend to get anxious when I take the test, but not today. I was lucky that Jimmy helped me summarize my driving experience after the test, and made me understand that I need to practice more and build up my confidence. Overall, the practice and test was a stressful but enjoyable experience. Thank you very much to the driving school and thank you very much to Jimmy Green.

Fantastic experience: Highly recommend this school! I have been rather scared of driving and the instructors were very patient and great. I had most of my lessons with Brian who was amazing, a great teacher, very patient and also very fun to talk to! I also had Janey as an instructor - she was lovely and had a very calming presence. I passed my test on my first try and am super stoked!

Positive experience: Was able to complete the knowledge (paper) test and skills (driving) test in about a week and a half. Note that if you want to book your DMV licensing appointment on the same day as your skills drivers test, you'll have to pay for a rushed system entry of $21. I called the school to do this, took them a minute or so.

Fantastic experience: I took my driving test here without any prior lessons from defensive driving school. My test instructor, Jimmy Green, was very kind, patient and friendly. I was a little nervous and he put me completely at ease and gave me tips before we began driving. He gently explained my point deductions and went into details of why certain maneuvers are important. Overall, a wonderful experience. It was not even close to being as stressful as I expected it to be. And yes, I passed my test!

Fantastic experience: Took a few driving classes along the knowledge and skills test with DDS U-district. Maggie and Luke are good instructors. Helpful and kind. It's valuable that one can "shift gears" and choose a different instructor as and when one's requirements evolve. Tyson was a fair examiner on the skills test and the whole experience has been nothing but good!

Fantastic experience: I took 10 1.5 hr lessons and the driving test with 30min warmup. I want to give a big shoutout to Lukas Ries. Lukas is very clear in his instructions and does a very good job describing the steps to do different maneuvers. He is very encouraging and patient, always pointing out what I’m doing well but at the same time also explaining aspects that I can do better in. Not only does he gives great tips regarding the driving test, he also shares his experiences and insights that helps me to be more confident in day-to-day driving. In addition to test prep and mock tests, Lukas also covered perpendicular parking and highway driving for me. Overall, it was really pleasant working with Lukas, highly recommend!

Fantastic experience: I took the road test here. The instructor Maggie Herbord is sooooo nice!! She helped to relieve my tension, and told me about some cautions carefully and patiently. After the test, she also told me where I need to pay more attention, and I can feel that she really wants me to have a safe drive in the future. This is an awesome experience!

Negative experience: THEY WON’T LET YOU PASS UNLESS YOU GIVE THEM ENOUGH CASH, READ MORE BELOW I’ve been driving for over 3 years safely, but I had to take a driving test to transfer my license over to Washington. I can’t believe I failed the driving test here with a score of 71, and what’s funny is I got 96 at another driving school in the same area just 4 days later. I didn’t pay for the 30 minute warmup because the pricing is ridiculous. The point deductions were absurd and there’s no evidence that I did certain things wrong. They said I followed too close to the car in front, missed shoulder checks, made wide left turns (took 6 points off!!), didn’t stop before the stop line, drove too slow, and didn’t turn my steering wheel all the way to the left for uphill parking (I did but not all the way, still enough to stop the car from rolling!). The only thing I admit I did bad was the wide back cornering, which should’ve only taken 4 points away. Basically, if you didn’t take any lessons with them, or even pay for the 30m warmup, you’re very likely to fail your driving test here. Don’t ever come here if you’re only taking a driving test with them.

Fantastic experience: Took the skills and driver's test as a first time driver in the US, both went smoothly. Kind and patient instructors, I had Jimmy Green help with my drivers test and he was very helpful and offered advice around where I lost points and what I could do better.

Fantastic experience: Was very worried when I saw how terrible the reviews were for 911 driving. Didnt feel like I had a choice of driving school around the area and was forced to Defensive Driving. I was soo wrong. This place isnt the better of two bad options, but a fantastic choice that I'd drive far to get to. I am honestly stunned by how 911 is still is business with a place like this so close. My only guess is our tax dollars are helping keep that sad place afloat. Courteous staff, great education, and honestly a very pretty location. If you're in the area this is the only right choice.

Positive experience: James and Emmanuel are amazing. They taught me a lot and made me comfortable taking the test. However I only give 3 stars due to Maggie since she ruined the experience. During our 1 hour class, more than half of the class she was talking about things that has nothing to do with driving (her family relationship, cultural difference between the US and Europe, or she got some skin problems on her hands, etc.) Notice that it was not when we were driving on the road that she couldn't stop talking, it was during practices such as parking or backing around the corner when we were stoped in the middle of whatever we were doing and I was waiting for her next instruction. So imagine we were doing parallel parking and I was in the middle of the road side by side with another parked car and looking at her for the next instruction and she started talking about why her hands were so dry and why she kept scratching them and all the details of her skin condition while I was just waiting for her to tell me what I should do next and she never stopped and kept blabbing for 10 minutes and we were just in the middle of the road doing nothing. It happened so many times (when the class already started and we were sitting in the car in the parking lot and she kept talking about her boyfriend or husband, during/after parallel parking, before/during/after backing around the corner, when we pulled over to the side of the road, oh yeah and she ended the class 5 min early) and even after I frowned upon her multiple times and clearly showed my annoyance. A one hour class is $100 and I don’t pay this much just for someone to chat with me (and who care about her hands?). I pay to learn and drive. Also she really can’t teach at all even during the short amount of time that we were actually driving. All she did was repeating the same word again and again and again (turn! turn! turn! turn! turn! turn! turn! you're ruining my tire! you're ruining my tire! you're ruining my tire! you're ruining my tire! you're ruining my tire! ) and didn't give me any time to react. She also frequently shifted the transmission without telling me. If she wants me to stop just hit the coach's brake, why would anyone shift the gear to drive/reverse/parking on the road without telling? Why would she put both of us in danger? She made me nervous during her lesson, which is very impressive since I didn’t even get nervous when I had my second lesson on freeway with another coach. Avoid Maggie by all means, or if you just have a lot of money to waste and want to pay for someone talking about why her hands are so dry, take lessons with her and be ready to learn nothing.

Fantastic experience: I had my skills test today with instructor Jimmy Green. I opted for the 30min warm up + skills test. I was very nervous going into the test but Mr. Green understood that and was very patient and helpful in making me less nervous. He has great experience and that is very evident with the short interaction i had with him. I learnt many things from him today in the short span. I would 100% recommend Jimmy Green and defensive driving school to anyone who is looking to get a new license.

Fantastic experience: I took 6 1-hour driving lessons and a driving test with warmup here. Bryan is a great instructor. He is knowledgeable, patient and talkative. I think the best thing about this driving school is that it focus more on teaching people to drive safely rather than pass the test only. About the test, I really recommend to have the warmup. I feel much more confident after going through the process once.

Negative experience: I rarely post reviews but in this case, my wife paid for 5 lessons. They assigned her with two instructors who were very unprofessional. One of them stressed out my wife so much that she ended the session half way. I called to convey her experience and they said there wasn’t anything they can do. “She paid for 5 lessons, she got 5 lessons” they said. Don’t recommend this place.

Fantastic experience: I took my driving test with Jimmy Green this morning and it was the best experience ;). It was a 30m warming up + driving test. During the warming up I was a little nervous at first, but instructor Jimmy made me relaxed and the whole process was fun. He pointed out the my mistakes about left turning too wide and patiently drawing a picture to clearly explain to me how to do it correctly. I finally passed the test smoothly and Thank you instructor Jimmy Green and nice chatting with you too! Can’t wait to get my first US driving license! Go defensive driving!

Fantastic experience: I had some experience driving in my home country but this was my first license in America. I took a 1-hour lessons and the 30-minute Warm-Up + Skills test. Jimmy Green was my instructor for the driving lessons and the skill tests. He is very knowledgeable, patient, attentive to details, and an absolute pleasure to work with: always listening and offering tips to become a better driver. I felt very safe learning and practicing with him. Even with my previous experience, I learned a lot with him. I feel confident to drive on US roads now. I 100% recommend this place. I first did the knowledge test with them which was super easy to set up and take. This experience convinced me to continue with them for driving lessons and skill test. I took 5 1-hour lessons and the 30-minute Warm-Up + Skills test. Christian was my instructor for the driving lessons and the skill tests. He is very knowledgeable, attentive to details, and an absolute pleasure to work with: always listening and offering tips to become a better driver. I felt very safe learning and practicing with him. Even with my previous experience, I learned a lot with him. I feel confident to drive on US roads now. I 100% recommend this place. Christian was amazing and everyone I interacted with was very nice as well.

Fantastic experience: I took the knowledge and the skill tests in DDS and had an excellent experience. For the skill test, Jimmy Green was my evaluator and I had the best possible experience! Jimmy was warm and made me comfortable during our whole time together, and I even got some great tips on how to improve my parallel parking in the end. I would recommend DDS and Jimmy Green as an instructor to anyone!

Fantastic experience: I would highly recommend Jim Green for DMV Drive Test. He is very polite and kind. He gives good pointers to improve on, which helped me a lot. He made sure I was comfortable and not nervous. P.S: He has amazing stories to tell as well!

Fantastic experience: I opted for '5(1 Hour) Lessons' and chose Bryan Davis as my instructor for each class, owing to the fact that I had an interaction with him during my Knowledge test. Bryan has been amazing with his knowledge/skills and the techniques he shared, quite calm and patient in answering all my questions, friendly and fun too! Loved his teaching methods. I went from being a hesitant novice driver to a pretty confident and skillful one, thanks to Bryan and DDS! For the testing, I chose the '30 Minute Warm-Up + Skills Test - Company Vehicle' option and this helped me get in the groove of things before the actual Skill Test part on the D-day. The warm-up helped brush-up various aspects and was like a bonus class too :) Overall, had a pleasant experience here and certainly recommend DDS/Bryan Davis!

Fantastic experience: I recently moved to Seattle and was seeking to get my first DL in the States. This school was recommended to me by a friend, and it was the best decision. I took the Knowledge + 30-minute Warm-Up + Skills test, and it was completely worth it. Jimmy was my instructor for the warm-up and skills test, he’s awesome! Professional and gives you good tips, plus the conversation in general was great. I have been driving for 13 years abroad, but rules in the US (especially WA) are a lot more strict, so I think this combo is a good investment if your just switching from a foreign driver license to one in the US.

Fantastic experience: I went here on a Monday. My instructor was Tyson, and I would like to say that I was fortunate to get him as my instructor. He was very professional and understanding. He helped me understand the common mistakes, rules etiquettes and was very reasonable. I really liked how he maintained his composure throughout the test and continued to be patient. He was able to calm my nerves and helped me stay focused so that I could focus on driving. Thank you so much DDS!
