Overall, DCS School of Driving stands out as a great choice for anyone serious about pursuing a career in commercial driving.
DCS School of Driving: Reviews
Fantastic experience: I attended DCS in May of 2024. At first I was not entirely sure how it was going to go. I came into class already having a Class B CDL I was just upgrading to a class A. After my first meeting with the owner(Chris) I knew I wanted to go there for school. I loved that they had all standard shift equipment keeping the art of driving alive. Once class started you jumped right into the book work. I could tell from the beginning that the instructors knew what they were talking about and were well experienced in the field of truck driving. Already having some experience driving class B vehicles I had a little bit of an easier time on the book work side of the class, however if you pay attention and participate in the classroom it will be no problem to pass all of the necessary testing to graduate but also to have a successful and safe driving career. As far as yard time and on road instruction I feel this was done in as safe of a way as possible. Any time you take students who have never handled a truck and or trailer it can be a little unnerving for both student and instructor. So long as the student pays attention and listens to instruction all goes smoothly. Learning to drive TT is dangerous business so attention to detail is necessary for success. So PAY ATTENTION AND LISTEN. I feel as though this schooling and training prepared me well to be able to pass road tests with employers and start a career in the trucking industry. Not only did the instructors teach you how to drive well, they also give you advice on interviewing and types of jobs you can get after graduating. The instructors are all no nonsense real drivers with experience and knowledge. They all get 5/5 from me. I’d recommend this school to anyone who has common sense, a willingness to do what it takes to learn, and to actually study and do the work necessary to obtain the knowledge. Instructors at this school will act as many employers in the industry.. they’re not going to hold your hand and lead you to success without you doing the work. If you’re lazy and looking for an easy time where you are given everything, this ain’t the school for you. If you want to actually do the work and earn it, you’ll love this place. If I had to pick schools again, I’d choose this one every time.
Negative experience: Do not waist your time with this school. There are other organizations that offer better when is come to in class learning. The instructors are a joke. Dave and Chris are worthless. I was told by one of the instructors that I didn't deserve to have my CDL's, that's not something a instructor should say to a student who I learning or is challenged by something new. Dave is all about friends and if you are on his good side than you are golden, of you are a student who is having trouble he will treat you like you don't belong. The school worked with me and bu I felt the expectation of my success was low. I got my CLD by going to another organization to take my road test (that should tell you something there) and I was successful. DCS told me I wasn't cut out to drive but another examiner told me I had what it takes to drive. Do yourself a favor do your research first and go with a school who's staff aren't douchebags. DCS just wants your money so if you aren't on their good side they will try to fill you or put in a bus rather than helping you get your class A. Knowledge is power. Everyone's experience will differ I'm just sharing my experience.
This is an individual who should not be on the road. Definitely not in a truck, probably not in a car. Normally a student needs no more than 20 hours on the road and 24 hours in the yard to be ready to test.
This student required over 40 hours in the yard. After nearly 16 weeks (we allowed him to come back because he was struggling so much) he still doesn't know the names of his instructors -- 'Chris' doesn't even teach the evening class. (He will probably edit his review, but the original says "The instructors are a joke. Dave and Chris are worthless.")
Any individual that attends class for 16 weeks and can't be bothered to learn their instructors' names -- you can guess how well they were actually paying attention in class.
If the person who told this individual that they didn't deserve their license is who I believe it is - the one who he couldn't be bothered to learn his name - this is an instructor with over 30 years over the road, millions of safe miles of driving, and an entire binder filled with accolades from his time instructing with one of the most successful national carriers in the US. If a guy like this tells someone that they don't deserve a license, that is coming from someone who KNOWS what he is talking about.
As for what it tells you that he went to another location... It tells you that he could not pass a test with a State Certified Third Party Examiner. This was an individual trained to administer Driving Tests, NOT ONE OF OUR INSTRUCTORS, that confirmed that he should not be driving a truck. He did get one point correct: We did try to help him get his Bus license so that he would be able to have a Class B and get work. But as they say, no good deed goes unpunished and a perfect example of blaming others instead of taking responsibility for your actions.
If you come to DCS expecting that we will just hand over a license and put you on the road with 80,000 pounds behind you, driving next to people's families over mountains and in bad weather... then yes, do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. If you are looking to learn what it means to be a real driver, not just a steering wheel holder, and you are willing to listen and to learn and put forth the effort needed to be really good at a very difficult job, then we want to be the ones to help you do that.
Positive experience: Dcs school of trucking was a success. Both our instructors, Dave and Bob were to amazing gentlemen the knowledge that we received while there was just fantastic. They believed in us just as we believed in ourselves we were determined to get through this corse. Dave I appreciate everything you’ve taught me and all the extra time you allowed me to get behind the wheel. I will take what I learned to the next level. Bob I learned so many survival tips and techniques from you that we learned that I might be able to pass along to help others. Despite being in the freezing weather outside we made it to the end. Once again I thank you Dave and Bob job well done!
Fantastic experience: very patient, very good school lots of experience and survival tips, i will suggest this DCS school to anyone that wants to learn.
Fantastic experience: great school, night class instructors David and Bob are the best instructors you could ask for.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely love this school. If it wasn’t for the instructors they have, I don’t think I would have made it far! They are detailed, excellent strategies and structure of the curriculum, with a lot of hands on! Can’t show my level of appreciation and respect I have for Bob and David in words as it will always come short. Their personalities really set the class for success! Blessed with the opportunity to meet them, and learn from them!
Fantastic experience: Great school. Dave and Bob are great instructors and have incredible knowledge in the trucking industry and make it easy to learn.
Fantastic experience: Today I passed my CDL driving test! What a wonderful experience it was! I am grateful for DCS school of driving for grate instructors. But in specific Big shot out to instructor David! His patient and experience will definitely set you up for success!!!! I recommend DCS school of driving to anyone considering obtaining their CDL!
Fantastic experience: These guys are awesome! I just finished the evening class, and passed the state test monday! It was great to be able to work and while earn an income while still being in class and learning. We had David for our instructor, he is a great teacher. He stays calm in tense situations and does an excellent job at explaining what you did wrong to help improve yourself. I highly recommend DCS School of Driving for anyone who wants to get their CDL!
Negative experience: Please find a different route to train your drivers. DCS trucks are driving by my house multiple times at night. It is dark and the trucks are stopping in the middle of the road!! My road is in a residential/rural area that has a lot of deer. It is unsafe to pass these trucks when they randomly stop. It causes delays to wait for the drivers who do not maintain a safe, steady speed. Find a different route..please!!!
Kristen you have probably noticed that we have found another location to practice our shifting. We try to be good neighbors and will do everything we can to maintain that.
Negative experience: It’s the owners equipment. He takes you out and doesn’t understand your growing pains. You don’t mean to grind a gear or two. But he gets highly upset. Especially the closer you get to the non refundable part of your money. He has no sense of humor to maybe ease your nerves. I would try other places if I were you.ok let be more clear when the time comes when you can’t get a refund is when the bullshit starts ( how’s that)
This is a great review to match with the one from Nicholas from above. Here is a guy who seems to believe that it should be okay to 'grind a gear or two'. Which is student language for, "I was repeatedly using all of my strength trying to jam it into 8th gear when it should be going into 4th."
On one hand, you have a student complain that we are too picky about taking care of the equipment... On the other hand, we have a student that complains that the equipment is in terrible shape. Just imagine what the equipment would be if no one bothered to try to take care of it.
Bill also seems to imply that we were trying to get him to quit before he reached the non-refundable portion of class. If someone WAS trying to make him quit... wouldn't it make more sense for them to wait until the point where there was no refund, rather than while there was a refund still available? Maybe Bill just wasn't cut out to be a driver and we were doing him a favor letting him know that this was not working for him, rather than waiting until after the refund point and then just keeping all of his money. If I'm trying to cheat someone with poor service, it seems to me that getting them to quit while they still have a refund available would be counter-productive to my scheme wouldn't it? Maybe I really just had his best interest in mind, even if it meant less money for me.
Fantastic experience: I came into the class not knowing what to expect, but desperately needed my CDL to change my financial situation. I have truly learn so much not only from the evening class instructors (David and Bob) but just is much from the other students from their weakness to their strengths I was always learning from everyone . I can only speak on behalf of the evening class. But I am sure whether day or evening classes they give you the basic fundamentals for you to strive to be the best version of yourself in learning how to safely drive a tractor trailer
Fantastic experience: Mr Bob and Mr David is the best instructor you could ever have. They were so nice with us!
Fantastic experience: Instructors on nighttime classes are very knowledgeable They have a lot of years of experience and take their time and explain things to you
Fantastic experience: One of the best schools in Pennsylvania. They will do their best to set you up for succes. Without the help of these wonderful instructors you will never know the most about trucking.
Fantastic experience: Great training very good instructors for the night time classes well worth the time Dave and Bob will work till u get it right
Fantastic experience: I can’t say enough good things about the nighttime instructors at DCS. They’re extremely knowledgeable and have over 50 years truck driving experience between the 2 of them. The classroom portion was very informative and fully prepared me for all tests for my endorsements. We all got plenty of time on the road and practice backing. Only a short time after getting my CDL I was able to leave my old job and work as a fuel transport driver making great money.
Fantastic experience: They did a great job at teaching us all that you need to know to be able to become a good driver. The instructors were always ready to give any extra to make sure you knew how to get through.
Thanks Chris. Always glad to see a happy, well-trained student. Stop back and visit any time. Be Safe!
Fantastic experience: Excellent (patient and knowledgeable) instructing and affordable in-house financing!
Fantastic experience: Dave and Bob the evening class instructors are top notch guys! They will teach you the right way and the safest way. They sincerely want you to succeed.
Fantastic experience: Dcs covered everything i needed to know about driving. Instructors were very good and by the time i took my test i was confident in my skills . I highly recomend going to dcs if your looking towards a career in commercial driving they are the best
Fantastic experience: Couldn’t have asked for a better place to learn how to drive
Fantastic experience: DCS was a great place to go, to start a new career. They had many different schedules to pick from, so you could still earn a living while training for your CDL. It’s been 9 years since I’ve gotten my CDL through them, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Fantastic experience: I decided to change careers and was referred to DCS. Most likely the best referral I could have been given, since I had never been in a truck before, and within a couple weeks, I was pulling a 53' van, with an 18 speed Kenworth. If you're considering getting your CDL, I can tell you that you won't find a better school and companies will literally hire you just because your CDL school is DCS. Some of these negative comments are laughable. The guys complaining about Chris getting upset about "grinding gears", if you do what he teaches, you can upshift and downshift with 1 finger. Ask me how I know. Also, the complaints about the equipment is coming from someone who has never sat on the side of the road, for 6 hours, waiting for a someone to come and change a flat tire on your trailer. It's the nature of the beast.
Fantastic experience: DCS Trucking School was the best decision I made to get into truck driving. I had called six or seven schools and training programs prior to choosing DCS. I spoke with the owner, Chris, who told me something I had not thought through well enough. He said he’d take me to every tight area full of hazards that he knew of so I could learn to identify and work around the situation properly. This approach has saved me from making boneheaded decisions in my career as a driver. They will even teach you to back up a tractor trailer without having to open your door. I graduated in 2013 and have had zero issues passing driving tests or getting hired. I have worked for large national companies as well as regional outfits. I’ve driven OTR both solo and as a team driver and city P&D. It’s not the easiest training and fast paced but if you finish what you start you will be one of the best trained green drivers on the road. I highly recommend at least having a chat with them if you’re interested in driving for a living.
Thanks Ron! Like you said, we aren't going to be the easiest out there, because this isn't an easy occupation. If you are looking for a rubber stamp, look elsewhere.
But if you are willing to put in the required effort, and most importantly -- follow directions -- you are going to be very pleased with the results.
Negative experience: Where do I begin… so speaking on behalf of the NIGHT CLASS only i would say without a doubt Dave and bob are awesome class act teachers. But thats it all of the equipment have problems from air leaks not holding pressure or not starting countless problems. I also had to get third party tested in a manual truck to pass because all of his equipment doesn’t work correctly or is damaged. Caution ⚠️ So if you decide this is your place just think carefully before attending classes here.
Hi Nick, thanks for the review. Yes, equipment has it rough. Students are hard on the equipment and we try to only take them out of service between classes. If students treated the equipment better it would be better for all of us.
So let's be honest here about WHY you weren't able to test in our equipment. If you recall you failed the road test twice, and I PERSONALLY offered to take you on the road myself before testing again. Unfortunately, you no-showed on me the first time, then cancelled the second time with very little notice at which time I told you that I wasn't scheduling any more time to work with you. To the best of my knowledge there was NEVER a time that a vehicle was not available for testing, and if that WAS the case it was because you waited so long that the vehicle was in for service between classes.
We can only do so much and offer extra help so many times. At some point, you have to take responsibility for yourself.
Fantastic experience: First class operation! I am very impressed with our instructors David, and Mr Bob. They demonstrate everything flawlessly, giving you the confidence they can perform what they teach. You can tell they truly care to teach you the extra things, because they're things you need to know.
Thanks Jonathan! We've got a really great group of instructors.
We might not be the most 'fun' school out there, but we do produce the best students!
Be safe!
Negative experience: When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice, when the wicked rule, the people groan..... Proverbs 29:2
Fantastic experience: Definitely recommend this school. They help me a lot the owner Chris was a huge help for me to obtain my cdl license. He always reminded me that I could and to never give up. I appreciate all he did for me.
Thank you for the awesome review! We teach you what you need to know in the real world, NOT just what you need to pass the test (though we do that as well.)
For anyone looking for schools: Make sure you ask if they teach you how to parallel park. If you ever find that you need to park LEGALLY on a shoulder because the rest area is full, you will really appreciate that having that skill means you have a place to sleep that night.
If your school doesn't teach parallel parking, RUN AWAY!
Fantastic experience: Got my license through DCS back in 2017. I knew driving was what I wanted to do in life it was a huge goal for me to have a CDL. But, i was not in a financial position to pay the titution outright, or even finance the class. Despite this, the owner still worked with me to help me be able to pay for the class,it helped me greatly. The length of course is much longer than regular truck driving schools. But that's good, in the trucking industry its important that driving students have plenty of wheel time and instruction before being thrown out on the road and DCS gets that.
Thanks Brock. I think its safe to say that every one of the negative reviews came from someone who either A) Quit and gave up or B) Wrote it as soon as they got finished class and didn't realize exactly how much more they learned here than they would have somewhere else.
I would love if there was a way to restrict comments until after you have spent at least 3 months driving. At that point I'm nearly positive that students would understand how much better off they are than 99% of other schools students. We are tough because this is a tough business. You don't get to have bad days. You have bad days and people die. Our students are trained so that they don't have bad days.
Be safe Brock, and thanks for the review.
Positive experience: This place would have gotten three stars were it not for the instructors. Bob is excellent in the yard and Dustin is great on the road, they are both very patient. Chris is great in the classroom if you need help and he's good on the road too, although he can have a very short fuse on the road. Overall though, I did learn the proper way to do things and I learned how to drive a truck, and passed my test. Can't complain.
Fantastic experience: Great school and great instructors Dave and Dustin very knowledgeable and hands on so much different equipment on the yard day cab, sleepers, school buses, charter buses…i would definitely recommend this school to anybody interested in obtaining their CDL
Thanks for the great review! Glad that we were able to give you exactly what you needed to get started. Come by and visit any time!
Positive experience: Me gustaría saber si dan clases en español
Fantastic experience: You will not only got your license but you will got the experience you need to be a good truck driver. Great School.
Thanks for the great review. And a pass on the State Test the first time around... Not to shabby on your part either!
Fantastic experience: Let me start by saying I did not attend their school, however, I did have my CDL-A test at their facility. I showed up a bundle of nerves. When I arrived, I was approached by an instructor and carried on a fun, light conversation and this really eased my brain for a little bit. I then met with the tester who followed every guideline but was very professional but was laid back so that I was not overly on edge - it certainly didn’t feel like a “test” but more of a ride along and I was showing him what I knew. To pass, the expectation was high and they don’t just rubber stamp a permit to show numbers. At the end gave me a very detailed evaluation and then gave me some pointers, or “take aways” .. they really care that you’re competent - it’s their family on the road too. I highly recommend this school if you’re looking for a quality testing facility .. thank you DCS for exceeding my expectations and helping me stay calm through an otherwise very nerve wracking experience while providing a professional evaluation of my abilities.
Positive experience: Hardest thing I ever did. These guys care!
Fantastic experience: Great School, the instructors I had were all great. You were taught the correct way of doing things and had to do them correctly or fail. You got no free passes here. The equipment was second to none.
Thanks Gary! There are a lot of places to go if all you want to do is 'get your license.'
DCS wants to teach people how to 'Drive a Truck.'
There IS a difference!
Fantastic experience: If you need third party testing done, this is definitely the place to go in York county. It's very convenient to schedule and their price is cheaper than other places.
Fantastic experience: I came in today (I don't speak English well, since it's not my native language) I am specifically very thankful to Chris for being patient with me, and also for explaining things very carefully knowing that I had a language barrier.
Fantastic experience: Thanks for making my dream come true ...... big hugs oll of you tank you.
Negative experience: I was attending DCS School of Driving, LLC last summer. I ended up dropping out because one of the "teachers" was rude, inpatient, hater, back stabber towers the owner. My group and I were in between cross fire between the owner and one of the teachers that had previously quit the school and then came back. The one teachers, the rude one all of them, all he did in class was criticised the government, the gay people and the owner political believes. When I was learning out in the yard and getting ready to be out in the road the older man didn't seem to have what it takes to teach. I am there trying to learn and you have this teacher slams everything cause you are not learning at the pace of his words and his reactions is smoking his brains out and raising his voice at you, slamming his hat to the floor and smaking the truck if you don't learn at the sound of his words and don't talk back because you will set him on fire. Chris the owner, former kindergarten teacher does not have much patiences either that explains why he did not continued teaching kids. I have to say that the best teacher and only good person at DCS School is that one teacher that was teaching me backing techniques, he is by far the only one that is worth it at DCS School of Driving. Now I am getting ready to start over again with a different company.
Mr. Lua,
Thank you for your comments and review. I am extremely sorry that you were disappointed in your experience with DCS School of Driving. As I had told you when we spoke last, I regret that you choose to simply stop attending classes rather than letting me know of your dissatisfaction so that I might be able to address the issue and to find a solution.
If I don't know about a problem, there is no way for me to solve it.
You will be pleased to know that, in large part due to your situation, that the "rude" instructor that you referred to is no longer employed by DCS School of Driving. We strive to go above and beyond what any other school does in terms of teaching quality and value and will not tolerate anything less from our family of instructors.
I wish you the best of luck at your future school.
