Safeway Driving School offers driving lessons for beginners and experienced drivers alike. Many students have praised the patience and support of instructors such as Lorna, who helped them pass their driving tests with confidence. The school's teaching methods are designed to ensure that students not only memorize the rules of the road but also practice them effectively. The environment is often described as friendly and professional, making it a welcoming place for learning.

However, there have been several concerns raised by customers regarding service quality and communication issues. Some parents reported difficulties in scheduling lessons, instructor availability problems, and perceived unprofessional staff behavior. Instructors like Kathy have received mixed feedback, with some students finding her interactions unsatisfactory. Customers have also expressed frustrations over delays in refunds for services not rendered, highlighting a need for improved customer service.

Pros:

  • Supportive and patient instructors.
  • Many students have successfully passed their driving tests after lessons.
  • Friendly and professional learning environment.

Cons:

  • Issues with scheduling and instructor attendance.
  • Mixed reviews on certain instructors’ professionalism and communication.
  • Concerns over customer service and responsiveness regarding refunds.

Overall, while Safeway Driving School has a foundation of supportive teaching, potential customers should be aware of mixed reviews regarding operational efficiency.

Fantastic experience: My instructor was Lorna. She was great and super patient to a beginner driver like me. Yesterday I passed my driving test at DMV with 93points out of 100! Thank you Lorna and Safeway driving!

Negative experience: EDIT: Attached are screenshots of the harassing text messages my son has been receiving. It appears they are retaliating because we proceeded with disputing the charges through our bank—an action we were forced to take due to their continued failure to return phone calls or emails regarding the refund for services not rendered. Additionally, I want to note that the bank dispute was initiated in October, yet the harassing text messages and phone calls only began on January 30, 2025. This pattern of behavior is unacceptable and further underscores their unwillingness to handle this matter professionally. I am extremely disappointed with the experience my son and I had with this driving school. We purchased 5 two-hour behind-the-wheel lessons, and the service we received was far from acceptable. Our lessons were originally scheduled for September 19th, 20th, 24th, 25th, and 26th from 12 PM to 2 PM. • On September 19th, the instructor didn’t arrive until 1:34 PM • The lesson on the 20th went as planned. • On the 24th, no one showed up by 12:15 PM, so my son called the school, and they said the driver was having issues at the DMV and would need to reschedule for Friday, September 27th. • When I called on the 27th, I was told we had to reschedule again for October 3rd, 4th, and 5th, due to the same DMV issues. Fast forward to October 3rd: Once again, no one showed up by 12 PM. I called at 12:31 PM, and they claimed they had informed my son last week that the driver had a virus and couldn’t make it. This was completely false, as I spoke to them last week, and they never mentioned a virus—only DMV issues. This entire experience has been a complete hassle, filled with delays, excuses, and poor communication. I requested a refund on 10/03 but have yet to receive it despite following up with email. The lady I spoke with said she would leave a note for the owner but have not heard back. The next step will be to dispute the charges with my bank as they did not provide the service we paid for. I cannot recommend this driving school to anyone—it has been a waste of time and money.

Negative experience: I recommend not using this company for your teens driving lessons. We have had more trouble with them. First, they cancelled on us 2 weeks in a row because they said one of their drivers had an emergency in California. So they rescheduled us and I reminded them that we requested a male instructor. They sent a female. Fine no biggie. My son had one 2 hour lesson on a Tuesday and I spoke with the instructor when she was getting ready to leave making sure she would be back the following day at our scheduled time at 3. Come Wednesday no instructor showed. I waited until 3:30 and called. I got some sort of story that the instructor was sick then the story changed that she was scheduled with another driver. I demanded a refund and will not be using this school for my son’s lessons ever again.

Negative experience: Our child was scheduled for 20 hours behind the wheel training and then told after that a car was stolen and they had to cancel appointments for the day before her driver test. After speaking with my daughter I found out When she was actually driving the instructor was showing my daughter photos of tattoos on her phone that she wants and having her talk to the instructors friends on FaceTime. The instructor also has her stop for donuts and coffee and smoke breaks while on time I paid for. The owners wife also them drive to turn in time cards even though their was no one scheduled after my daughter. To top of off I asked for a refund of my 12 remaining hours $780.00 so I could hire another company and was told many excuses including that I wouldn’t find any other company that could get me in right away. As if that’s okay to delay a refund. The next day promised a refund by the owner her husband and now he’s had a procedure and won’t be in till next week. My daughter has almost completed all those hours now through a different company and I’m still waiting for my refund. Do not use them!! It makes sense why they don’t have a lot of instructors if they think putting student drivers at risk with cell phones is okay and if allowing them to run the clock for unauthorized breaks is okay too. Shame on them. I still haven’t got my refund and will be pursuing it.

Fantastic experience: A friendly school, with instructors who are rooting for your success. A professional establishment that push their students to do well. The activities that are given are straightforward and very good to learn the laws and procedures of the roads. This establishment is perfect for a friendly, respectful, and peaceful environment and community.

Safeway Driving School

Thanks for the positive review Jules. I am glad you enjoyed the class.

Negative experience: My daughter took lessons here. By far the worst. They are rude and on one of her lessons while she was driving the trainer yelled at her twice. So loud to the point it made her cry. Would NOT recommend!

Safeway Driving School

This incident occurred during training of a new instructor. We apologized to the student and assured her that we would give her another instructor that was patient.
The new instructor was disciplined and is receiving additional training. Our deepest regrets for this complaint because this is not who we are.

Fantastic experience: Went from zero driving experience to passing the road test first try with a couple of lessons with Jamie. I took my test with Cory and both gave great tips. Great lessons for any level of experience or nervousness

Safeway Driving School

Thanks for the positive comments. I will see that the instructors be made aware of your comments.

Positive experience: Did one their behind-the-wheel options a year ago and Jayne Brooksbank was the instructor. Instructor was slightly rude when I would ask for confirmation of her directions (as a new, nervous driver this did not really help my confidence) and if I made a mistake she would make comments such as "are you dyslexic because I think you are". Would also constantly need to stop for bathroom breaks, by the office, and grabbing coffee. However, her feedback was good and highlighted my problem areas.

Robin Compagno 3 years ago

Negative experience: Definitely would not recommend. Highly disorganized, very poor customer service, and when important email communications were missed, I was actually told that they don’t check emails. The 1 star yelp reviews are sadly quite accurate. I would not use this company again.

Fantastic experience: Ms. Kathy really helped me out! I completed the Driver’s Ed course the weekend before my permit test. I passed with only one wrong. The way the course is set up really makes you grasp the information and stick with it. Ms. Kathy is very encouraging and just makes the whole learning experience 10x better. I highly recommend Safeway to anyone who is going to take their permit or driver’s test

Safeway Driving School

Thanks Jenifer for the complimentary remarks on Kathy. Kathy has been teaching for almost 20 years and loves the job. Her goal is to fine tune students to become defensive drivers.

Fantastic experience: I want to say thank you to Michael kulbaba and Corey For being patient with me and teaching me how to drive and I passed my test today.

Safeway Driving School

Mike and Corey are excellent driving instructors and are often requested by students. They appreciate your complimentary remarks.

Negative experience: Kathy— the owner, doesnt show up till 11 for her 9am class. Your kids arent even getting ehat you pay for. Then she debates about why cops are justified killing people. She is SO RUDE. My daughter had a cough(wearing a mask, covid negative/flu negative, no fever) and suffers from seasonal allergies and asthma and its spring!!. Kathy sent her home, and in front of the class said she didnt know why a mother would send their kid to class coughing. She later denied that she forced my daughter to go home, but the entire class witnessed this. I believe she is a racist too. After forcing my daughter to leave, insulting us, and being rude, she wont refund us. I would look elsewhere. Your kids wont even learn. She just talks for 5 mins about cops killing people and leaves them in self study for an hour. Buyer beware!!

Safeway Driving School

The above comments are nothing like the truth. This parent is not aware of the class starting on time and the discussion brought up in the class by students. Kathy, who is White, is married to a Black man. She has never been called a racist before. I believe the parent has other issues. Kathy did not insist that the student go home because of the coughing. The student made that decision and called her mother to pick her up. It was the student's decision, therefore, a refund was not approved because the student was given an opportunity to make up the class at a later date.

Fantastic experience: I simply cannot recommend this school enough. Mike, who's been my primary instructor, is excellent at his job with much patience and an easy going attitude, ridding all of my anxiety with driving as soon as the first lesson started. He had helped me refine my driving skills, allowing me to pass my drivers test after failing my first time.

Safeway Driving School

Thanks, Eli for the complimentary remarks of Mike. He is appreciative of the comments. I must agree that he is one of the best.

Fantastic experience: I have already attended multiple lessons, upwards to about 10. I have had the same instructor, Corey Avis. And to be honest, he makes learning how to drive truly an enjoyable experience. Not one lesson, where i did not enjoy, well perhaps the first one since i was so nervous. Safeway driving has taught me alot of things, they dont just make you memorize rules, they made you practice rules subconsciously. I find myself subconsciously doing the mirror shoulder check and i think that is an excellant habit.Would 100% recommend. Would also recommend Corey Avis, he is truly a great instructor.

Safeway Driving School

Thanks for the extraordinary comments on Corey. He is appreciative of your evaluation. Corey has been teaching for many years and is often used to teach new driving instructors.

Positive experience: Kathy was so helpful. Corey will be driving with my daughter & we appreciate his knowledge and patience in preparing her for her test.

Negative experience: When taking the class I thought that it would be useful. Now after taking my permit test I realize that it wasn't. They teach you a ton of random things to help you past their test, not the DMV test. Safeway did not teach me one thing that was on the test. I 100% do not recommend.

Jenna Moore 5 years ago

Negative experience: terrible service and very unprofessional, called many times to schedule an appointment and no calls were ever answered even as they were all made during their business hours, when i finally scheduled an appointment the instructor arrived late and had NO MASK on during COVID, claimed he had breathing issues throughout the whole lesson had his mask dangling on his chin. The car was also disgusting and had empty soda cups thrown in the back and garbage everywhere. very unsanitary and very unprofessional

Fantastic experience: I passed my exam today! I’d like to commend Jane for starting it off and for boosting my confidence. Never driven before and took only 2 lessons with her. She’s so calm and soft spoken which really helps in us being able to think straight and upfront.

Fantastic experience: Safeway is a great driving school. I came to this school after having some bad experiences in driving and they were very patient and kind with me. My primary instructor was Dale and I my anxiety to drive was gone in the very first lesson. I would recommend him to everyone. The staff was pleasant and helpful every time I contacted them. Driving lessons are not cheap(thought, cheaper than most of other schools) but I passed my driving test in a first try 100%, so it is worth it.

S Karandikar 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: Safeway has a great instructor named Dale. He is the best! He works well with students and their families. Request Dale if you need an instructor with patience and skills. He works well with people with health impairments as well. He is a great person. We had great experience with Dale and we are indebted for his patience and perseverance. Thank you Dale!. Safeway is getting 5 stars because of him.

Verônica Pimentel 6 years ago

Negative experience: The teacher was not understanding, she was rude. I really want to learn how to drive but she is causing me to lose my desire to drive. Classes are not cheap so I think they should teach with more patience and dedication. I did not like my experience at this auto school. I believe when we are learning we are prone to make mistakes. This teacher definitely needs to learn that we are human. her name is JAYNE BROOKSBANK :(((

Safeway Driving School

We take legitimate complaints seriously and do our best to correct mistakes or misunderstandings. This school does not a have record of the above complainant. The teacher's name was not mentioned and there are no specifics to the complaint.

Fantastic experience: When I called the school the person I spoke to was Ericka ! She was very helpful and nice and made me feel welcomed. I love Ericka so much and Lori and was very helpful and funny and I love that kind of positivity everytime she comes in our class and says hi and I feel so happy when she does. Now Sanders he is a very boring person doesn’t really know how to TEACH !!!!!! He makes me fall asleep all the time and I wish it wasn’t like that . But overall the services is a good .

Negative experience: The owner called me all rude and condescending over her billing error. She accused me of being someone else that had been rude to her office and driver and told me I was 'yappy'. She said she was sick in bed and could not 'deal' with her business error. Furthermore she stated she didn't have to talk to me about the billing error since my son was 18 even though he's not the one that paid. She told him When she first called on his phone to not put anyone else on the phone and sounded threatening to him. She's a total psycho and Soo unprofessional! The driver was 2 hours late the first session because of her error not his then the second session the driver was instructed to ask my son for $100 which is a surprise as we were advised BOTH sessions have already been paid for. She has zero customer service skills and blamed the customer for everything. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!

Negative experience: Bailed on me on the day of my driving test, bad overall experience, I'm being generous by rating them one star over five, if there were any minus ratings, I'd be glad to do it.

Fantastic experience: Sam is great. He does not sugar coat anyhing. He is honest and recommeneds loads more driver training. He is courteous and allows her to make her mistakes then discusses those mistakes with all of us. I love how he tunes into confidence levels and looks for nervousness. Slow and steady will ensure she passes her test. Our baby will be knowledgeable and informed before we turn her loose. Mommy and Poppi are very proud of our angel baby. 3 more sessions with Sam and she will be ready to pass her drivers test without a hitch. The rest of our kids are chomping at the bit wanting for Sam to be their instructor.

Diana Hollander 12 years ago

Fantastic experience: I was completely thrilled with the driving school, which is one of the few that is in a classroom and not on the internet. My daughter has a learning disability and they did a fabulous job teaching her and she did pass her test for her learning permit, which is difficult for her. Not only was I completely satisified and will have take behind the wheel from them, but she enjoyed it and learned alot!

Elise Rosen 12 years ago

Fantastic experience: They were wonderful! My son was nervous driving with a stranger and the driver made him feel so comfortable! He gave my son excellent instruction! We then had them take him out again right before his driver’s test and he passed with a 98%. I HIGHLY recommend them and will use them for my other 2 children.

C.C. C. 12 years ago

Fantastic experience: They were wonderful! We hired them for our daughter in February and were very pleased with her instructor, Tammy. Tammy was friendly, patient, and gave our daughter excellent instruction, in so much that she ended up scoring a 100% on her driving test! We would highly recommend this driving school if you are looking for a nice and friendly courteous staff with excellent, patient, and knowledgable instructors!

Fantastic experience: My son-17 with Asperger's Syndrome-just passed his driving test first go around with a 90! Totally because of Safeway Driving School. This business is professional and caring--and they deliver more than they promise. Every appointment was coordinated and on-time; every lesson came with suggestions and positive input for things we could do to assist our son. Every instructor we had worked well with our son, and because of them and their caring instruction, he has gained a critical step towards self independence. I will continue to recommend this driving school to all of my friends with teens - disability or not. We will be back in a few years with our younger son. Thank you Kathy, Sam, Dennis, Joe, Tami and Ti for supporting our son! And thanks for being one of those rare gems in Las Vegas: a local business that truly cares about their community.

Alyx Agian 13 years ago

Positive experience: Not sure why so many of the comments are negative. I used the school three times—8 hour lessons, 10 hour lesson, and road test. Kathy is very nice and flexible with scheduling lessons. Sam was an excellent teacher. He was very patient and actively worked with me to improve the areas I was struggling with (mainly turning). He brought his own small pillow for me to sit on in order to improve my visibility, and we spent a whole day working on turns. The school adequately prepared me to pass the road test. I earned a perfect score on the parallel parking.

Narisa C 13 years ago

Negative experience: I agree with joe 100%. I took one behind-the-wheel "lesson" there and I will never go back. What a waste of money. I don't know how these people don't have complaints against them with the DMV and BBB. I didn't even get what I asked for. In addition, the instructor belittled me, told me I was a terrible driver and I would never pass my road test, and was very patronizing to me - and I am a 31 y.o. woman. Also, the only reason I made this appt was so that I could gain their permission to use their car for my road test, 2 days later. That didn't happen because the "instructor" told me I was a terrible driver and there was no way I could pass. He tried coerce me into buying more appts. I just borrowed someone else's car instead. I passed with 93/100. When I spoke to them on the phone a week later, I said I was dissatisfied with what I had received and that I was supposed to have the instructor observe that I was a safe driver, not treat me like a beginning teen driver who didn't know anything. First they told me that he needed to treat me that way because according to his "notes", I lacked any skill and need to buy more "lessons" before they would let me use the car for my test because I was not ready for my test. When I revealed that I had gone ahead with my test anyway, despite what their instructor had told me, and I passed with 93/100, their story changed completely and they told me that was because of the instructor, because he was SUCH a good "teacher", that he had taught me soo much in my one hour with him, that is why I passed. Then why did I need to buy more lessons if, at the end, I was prepared for my test? When I tried to raise a complaint, they told me I was a bad driver with no experience - they have all the experience. That is why I needed to buy more before they would let me use their car for my road test. I took my road test with someone elses car instead, and I passed because the instructor is SOO gifted that I started out terrible and learned EVERYTHING I knew from that one hour with this special guy. Does that make any sense to you? It just sounds like circular logic to me. They also told me, when I made a complaint about what I had (not) received, that they know what they are talking about, and that I don't know what I am talking about. Bottom line : the instructor was demeaning, patronizing, and belittled me. The owner acted like a bully towards me, and the other staff I spoke to(Kathy?), were rude, coercive, and manipulative. I got the impression that they are just out to get as much money out of their customers as they can. Terrible service. I WANT A REFUND. I seriously want my money back.
