Learn-Well School of Driving

Negative experience: I have had pretty good experiences driving with Alex, Chance, and Lou, and terrible experience driving with John. He was consistently 15 minutes late, and he never apologized. Instead, he is informing you of his delay with a vague text like ''.. driving school will be there shortly.." Even at my early classes with him, he was getting frustrated if you were to ask him something, replying with, ''we went through that', or ' do you understand what left and right is?', and then with his assessment ''you are never gonna pass your test''. I did not and will stop wasting my money there. Last time I drove with him, he wouldn't even let me start the car before I had paid him another 14 dollars in my balance. He never compensated my money for being late 15 minutes out of a 50 minutes class. He consistently has an intimidating tone, which only increases my anxiety. Hope he will read this and improve with his next students.

Fantastic experience: Both the instructors that I got, Alex and John were great at what they do! They gave spot on instructions and tips, that really helped me pass the driving test in one go. I would definitely recommend learnwell as a driving school. On the negative, it is difficult to contact the school, say to book the final road test. But they got back to me after trying few times over couple of days and leaving voice messages. Maybe the tip is to call early around 9 am!

Negative experience: Beware, Absolute Scammers!!! See pics for full details as there's a char limit for reviews! I paid for 6 driving lessons, 1 road test with prep package in April of this year. Each driving lesson is 50 mins, which includes the time to/from the driving school, so really you're getting 30 mins of driving practice. I only used 4 driving lessons, all taken within a week. I took lessons with Lou, John, Craig, and John again, in this order. Craig was the most patient and helpful instructor as he understands how to explain things in ways that beginners could easily digest. He did a lot of demonstrating when explaining things to watch out for. Unfortunately, Craig is always booked so for the last lesson I booked Alex, but for some reason, John showed up. For both lessons John was approx. 10mins late each time, but instead of making up for the time lost, he'd still end the lesson right on time. This doesn't make any sense as there already wasn't a lot of actual driving practice time. John in the first lesson seemed patient and helpful in giving out driving tips. However, in the second lesson with him, he was a completely different person (or maybe showing his real self this time) as he was very aggressive & impatient when teaching. At this point, I've only had three driving lessons, which actually felt like 1 (Craig's lesson) because the other instructors were just not good at conveying much. At many times throughout the lesson John was very agitated, flat out scolding and throwing up hands, for what? If I'm a great driver, I wouldn't be sitting in the car trying to learn from him. I was giving my best but John was acting as If I was driving recklessly. Regardless of what my driving background is, it doesn't warrant John's nasty attitude toward me, especially when I've been very attentive to him, not driving recklessly, and kind to him. Practice makes perfect so not getting everything within 30 mins is entirely ok, but John makes it as if the world is about to end if I don't become the best driver under the 30 mins of his instruction. After this disgusting experience I thought this school is not worth my money & time. Although I still had 2 driving lessons + 1 road test with prep package, their refund policy (see attached pictures) is that unused services are fully refunded. The remaining services were unused/unbooked and hence are not subjected to any cancellation fees. I kindly let them know my desire to get refunded for the unused services on 4/26 via email and voicemail. After three weeks of no replies, I filed disputes with my bank so that I can reach the driving school through my bank. Unsurprisingly, they responded to the disputes on 6/13. I called to which Lou finally picked up and told him I will withdraw all disputes if they refunded the unused services. Lou agreed so I called the next day to withdraw the disputes. I emailed the driving school again in mid July to see what's going on since I got no replies. Lou replied insisting that I hadn't withdrawn the disputes. I called my bank again to find out that the disputes were in fact withdrawn several weeks ago, but they were reopened by my bank, without my authorization. I suspect my bank reopened this because, perhaps, other people were also opening similar disputes against this driving school. Since I agreed to withdraw, I asked the bank to close the disputes and sent the driving school proofs of the withdrawals on 7/17. I received a check of $231 (should be $308) on 8/14 only after I kept emailing them about my refund, which I made clear was $308 with the breakdown detailed too. Scammed of $77 and 3+ months of my precious time. This entire time I only want to resolve this with them amicably as I know managing a business isn't easy, but near 0 communications for 3+ MONTHS is inexcusable. This isn't even about the money. It's their entire business model and unprofessionalism that I'm going after because it seems like I'm not the only and last one to be scammed by them! I will be taking legal actions as I'm very tired of being professional in this entire ordeal.

Fantastic experience: Excellent instructors, especially Craig! His guidance and patience made all the difference in building my confidence on the road. A big thanks to Alex and John as well!

Negative experience: Although they did teach me to drive well enough for me to pass the road test, the organization and professionalism of this business are abysmal. I agree with the other negative reviews. For how expensive these classes are ($77 per 50 minute lesson), the customer service is unacceptable. Towards the end of my experience with them, I was continually accused of owing them money for a lesson that I had already paid for weeks prior. After 2 weeks of calling and emailing to sort it out, they ghosted me. I was supposed to take my road test with them but never got a response to my calls or texts about setting it up. Luckily I was able to take the test with a friend’s car. Instead of giving your money to Learn Well, I recommend asking any friends you have who are good drivers and paying them to teach you.

Fantastic experience: Took 2 classes with Alex and the road test with prep with Craig. Both experiences were pretty good! They give a lot of good pointers on both driving in general and on how to face the road test. Not a newbie driver, but these were still very helpful in getting know the do’s and don’ts in driving in US. Did their pre-licensing course and received the certificate in a week. Scheduling the road test was pretty straightforward too. Lou called me back and set it up once I left a voicemail.

Fantastic experience: Alex and Lou are amazing instructors that I would recommend to anyone! I took 5 lessons and passed my driving test in the first attempt with a score of just 5 points deducted. I also took the pre licensing course with them and got the certificate in a week. The prices are a bit on the higher end but I felt like they did justice to the money spent. I learned a lot and feel really confident going in the road now.

Negative experience: They are actual scammers. Took a few lessons with them and realize the lessons are way too pricey for the quality of teaching and not really worth my time and effort. I have several lessons left that were already paid but never booked. Their refund policy which they attach at the end of each payment receipt is refunds will be issued for lessons that were never used as in never scheduled or canceled less than 24 hours notice. I have been trying to contact them for weeks by phone and email. Radio silence. This is an extremely unethical business practice. I will be filing a complaint to the Department of State and let them investigate to see what is going on. Anyone else having this issue should also file complaints as I know I am not the only one here.

Negative experience: As others have mentioned, they indeed do not have good customer service. The phone is never answered even after leaving voicemail messages for several weeks. They also don't read their emails as I tried to contact them there. No response. Their lessons are expensive for the quality of lessons they deliver. For newbie drivers, you will need 10+ driving lessons which should only be around 5 lessons if they only taught better. They do a lot of talking and very little showing and 50 minutes per lesson includes the time to and from the driving sites so really you are getting 35 minutes of actual driving practice. I would not recommend anyone taking lessons with them. The road test in Ithaca is not easy so there really is no point in taking lessons here.

Negative experience: The school overall is good but with some pretty critical flaws. To start with the good, the driving instructors are all amazing and very good at what they do. I felt safe in their hands and was able to quickly understand what they explained. For the bad, several times instructors were late by about 10 minutes and my session still ended on time so I paid for a 50 minute or less driving lesson. Also, I’ve really wanted to take my drivers test with the school and have left multiple messages and emails only to get absolutely no reply. It’s been over 2 weeks and still nothing, kinda hoping this review rectifies that. I’ll follow up if it does! Update: They never responded to past and current voicemails, calls, and email. I’m leaving Ithaca soon and won’t be able to get my license due to this, so my review goes from 3/5 to 1/5. I’m really disappointed and upset with the service not provided and it detracts from all the good experience I’ve had with the driving instructors & school.

Fantastic experience: Great instructors! Alex, Jon and Lou are wonderful and gave great guidance, I was able to drive on a variety of areas and really get comfortable being on the road. When it came to parallel parking and K turns the instructors were very supportive and gave great guidance and tips. Overall the instructors were very calm which made me a less anxious and more comfortable. Would highly recommend!!

Negative experience: Terrible communication, rude customer service, and bad instructors

Fantastic experience: I am writing this review having passed my driving test today and want to speak positively about the driving school based on my experience as an international student in Ithaca. Having previously failed a driving test in United Kingdom there were areas of my driving which needed improvement (including parallel parking and my tendency to drive a bit slow). While some of the lessons are a bit expensive, the instructors are good at letting you feel confident and relaxed. In my opinion, you need an instructor to be calm, believe in your abilities, and point out your deficiencies, while still giving you confidence in your ability to pass and I can testify that learn well provides all these things. From some of the tips and tricks about adjusting the right mirror to see your rear tyre while parallel parking (to avoid hitting the kerb), to advice on how to position better on narrow roads, the advice given was extremely good by this school. I took about 15 lessons with them, it's a bit much and probably could have gone by with about 6 but I wanted to be confident in my overall capabilities. I’m happy to say that I passed my test (albeit not perfectly had about 15 points deducted) and that I do highly recommend you to try the school. Special shoutouts to John, Lou, and Alex for being great teachers and the fun conversations we had about travel to UK and things to do in Ithaca.

Negative experience: I signed up for a pre-licensing class, but after hearing some concerns about the school's reputation for not sending completion certificates, I tried to cancel within their specified policy timeframe. Despite countless emails, portal messages, phone calls, and voicemails over four days, I barely received any communication. When I finally did reach someone to discuss my refund, I was brushed off with an abrupt "I have a lesson now, bye." I'd think twice before registering here.

Negative experience: I’ve been waiting for months for my certificate to come they won’t answer calls and when they did they said it should only be a week that was a month ago

Negative experience: *SCAM ALERT* Paid $230 for three class bundle through their website online. Have been trying to get in contact through their phone and email for the past week but nobody has been responsive or has reached out. Seems they took my money and ghosted me. BEWARE

Fantastic experience: Learn Well Driving School has been a great company to work with. They are flexible in scheduling, friendly, and knowledgeable. I have completed numerous lessons and have been able to successfully pass my drivers exam. I had zero experience when beginning with the lessons. They have been able to help me build my confidence as a driver and feel comfortable in all driving situations. The instructors have been accommodating and very helpful in difficult situations. Fantastic experience: For a multitude of reasons including extreme anxiety, and lack of practice due to my partner getting in an accident; I decided to try Learnwell Driving school to see what skills I needed to work on and work on getting over my anxiety of other people. I can happily say that after 3 lessons (one with Bart, one with Alex and one with Jon) I felt comfortable driving with an unfamiliar person and had all driving skills down and scheduled my test. I had a quick lesson with Lou and ended up passing my driving test!!! Thank you to everyone at the driving school for helping me get my license. Highly recommend, everyone is super friendly and super helpful. 10/10!

Fantastic experience: My son took several lessons with them and they taught him so much. He was able to pass his road test on the first try and we paid for the prep and use of car. Each time he took a lesson I could see he was more confidant with his driving skills. We appreciate all they did. It was well worth the money.

Negative experience: I attended one of their pre-licensing school but never received the certificate. Tried to contact them dozen of times to arrange a driving lesson but never picked up my call. I decided to learn in another driving school instead.

Fantastic experience: I had already learned how to drive and needed a brush up. That’s how I landed with them, only to realize I needed a lot to learn. I had test coming up 4 days later when I joined them. They were very professional and taught rules, mistakes, suggestions using pen and paper. I used to meditate and simulate everything twice or thrice after each class (since I didn’t have much time and practice). By the time I took my test I was a pretty smooth driver. It was around 45th day of my driving (over a span of 5 years) when I took the test. Despite so little experience, I was able to pass the exam. It was only possible through their teachings and my commitment. I highly recommend this driving center. Every penny is worth investing with them!! Thank you.

Positive experience: Updated Review: After many attempts, I finally got in touch with the owner, who provided two driving lessons and accompanied my daughter to the test site. She passed her test (she already had a driving license in another country). She mentioned that his advice and lessons were very practical and helpful. So, my one-star review is now four stars! Original Review: I called many times, left messages, and emailed multiple times, but received no response at all. I thought this was the best driving school in Ithaca based on other reviews, but there was no reply. They might not be operating anymore (the phone rings and asks you to leave a message, but still no response).

Fantastic experience: Took about 10 courses here, most with Bart. Passed the road test first time. All the instructors I have (Bart, Jim and Jone) are awesome. They have great driving skills and they are very patient with me when I can’t figure it out. They not only covers the skills for road test, but other useful techniques for actual driving like changing lanes on highway. I really like that every lesson they picked me up from my home and dropped me off the place I want to be. Great experience overall!

Fantastic experience: I strongly recommend this school! Driving can be stressful sometimes but it's much better if you start with friendly and experienced instructors. Here you will not only learn how to drive safely buy also, you will be given a bunch of great advices to make you feel comfortable as a driver in the new city and...in the new country:) Thank you!

Negative experience: I can't speak to the class itself, because my son was kicked out of the online meeting at the very beginning. He was sent an invitation that listed a 10 am start time, and he was dumped from the Zoom without explanation. When he called the phone number listed, he was told the class started at 9 and the employee would not listen to or see his evidence that he had been given the wrong information by the company. There are many ways to take this 5-hour course, and it is NOT required that kids take it locally. I would therefore encourage people to find another service as this one clearly has no respect for responsible kids like mine.

Fantastic experience: I started learning how to drive with Learn-Well in July as a complete beginner. Within 15 lessons, I passed my test in November on the first try. In my first lesson, Chase gave me an excellent gentle introduction in Cayuga Heights. I was pleasantly surprised that by the end of my first lesson I was able to drive myself home! For subsequent lessons, I was taught by both John and Bart. They were both very clear, encouraging, and were happy to tailor the lessons to what I wanted to focus on. Above and beyond the driving test requirements, John and Bart helped my practice real world skills such as highway driving and lane changing. I probably could have passed the New York driving test with just 10 lessons, but I was happy to take a few extra lessons to gain this valuable experience that will make me a safer driver in the long term. In short, the driving instructors truly go above and beyond. I can't recommend the Learn-Well School of Driving enough!

Fantastic experience: No kidding this driving school is the best in Ithaca. The instructors ALL care about getting you passed and are very familiar with local driving rules. They also maintain good communications with me throughout the course of time. Even though you already think you know how to drive, it is always good to schedule a lesson with them to go through it again before the road test: it’s always better to prepare well than doing the road test again and again!!!

Negative experience: I don't have any comment on their private instruction courses, however, If you are considering their pre-licensing class, please DON'T go for this school! In class, the instructor told us that we can have ask for another copy for $20 if the original one is lost. However, when I really tried to contact them, through 3 emails and 3 voicemails for over several weeks, they just DISAPPEARED. No one ever respond. It turns out that I have to go for another school and spend another 5 hrs on the exact same course for their fake advertising. PLEASE DON'T GO!

Negative experience: Updated: Has been good until my road test day came and (1) the instuctor was 15 min late (= I had 25% less time to practice) (2) the car that I practiced with right before my road test HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED so I had to take the road test with a different car and (3) I was still charged $130 despite the above. Plus, they cancelled my lessons twice because they made a mistake double booking, booking on test dates etc and couldn't take me to lessons. That said, most instructors I've worked with have been great, they are experts and they are crystal clear with things that you have to pay more attention to. I hope our folks have a better experience

Fantastic experience: All the instructors are super patient and professional. They taught me how to drive safely in merely a month. I highly recommend John, who helped ease my anxiety and made me start to enjoy driving. John also invented a "unicorn" to help me park properly. The "unicorn" helped me pass the road test on my first try, and more importantly, will accompany me in the future.

Fantastic experience: I came to this driving school after failing my road test in NYC, and I’m so glad that I did. My instructor was very patient, welcoming, and made sure that I felt safe while driving at all times. Even when I failed my first road test, he made sure we focused on my weaknesses to be better prepared for my next test. In less than 2 months I got my license!

Fantastic experience: We’ve had an excellent experience with Learn-Well School of Driving, particularly with Chance. He really helped my daughter improve her driving skills and her confidence. She just passed her test! While she could have used one of our vehicles, she chose to take her test on their car. She had a lesson prior to her test and they drove her down to the testing area and then brought her back. Taking the anxious parent out of the equation was the best thing we could have done. Regardless of what others say, take your test in Ithaca! I highly recommend this driving school.

Fantastic experience: My instructor, Chance, was super patient and nice. He explained me the rules and instructions over and over again without getting frustrated. In addition to learning how to drive, I really enjoyed talking to him. I also liked that he was honest to me about when he thinks I'm ready for the test and didn't try to add extra sessions unnecessarily.

Fantastic experience: I used Learn-Well to make sure my son had some other driving experience other than mom & dad. Each time they were on time, provided great advice & guidance for my son and treated us with respect and not just another number. My son’s road test was cancelled due to COVID and even though I had made the appointment with the understanding we would use their services the day of the road test, they still made sure I was kept up to date on everything happening with the DMV and even texted me the day DMV started rescheduling road tests. Having them there through this was so helpful and relieved some of the stress this “shut down” caused. I would definitely recommend this driving school to any parent! They’re reasonably priced, my son felt they were good instructors and provided advice on items he needed corrected and they were very friendly and all around great from beginning to end! Fantastic experience: The instructors are amazing. I cannot imagine anyone better - they are patient, professional and fun to talk to. They know each and every road/stop sign/intersection by heart and definitely teach with enthusiasm and care. I met with 3 different instructors and never ever had a single thing to complain about. Since COVID, they took every precautions, keeping masks, disinfecting seats and doing their job responsibly. Even with the pre-licensing class, they managed to make an impression. I prepared for (boring) hours of videos but instead was moved by their life experience that carries weight. They spread out the seats, limited class size and disinfected the room before and after. Will certainly recommend to anyone.

Fantastic experience: These guys are amazing!! I wouldn’t have been able to pass the test without their help! I recommend this to anyone that either has no experience or needs to polish off their driving skills. They are friendly and they know exactly what they are doing! I felt very comfortable while taking lessons and they really paid off in the end!

Fantastic experience: Best decision to learn driving from Learn-Well! Lou, Chance and Scott were extremely patient, kind and went out of their way to make sure I perfected my driving. Not only that, they were extremely flexible in terms of class timings and I was able to learn so much from them in a very short period of time. More than anything, they were super supportive and encouraging throughout. They also handled all the formalities with the DMV and made sure that the entire process was smooth. Fantastic experience: The school was amazing. Took the 5 hour course first then signed up for driving lessons. They taught you everything you need to know to be a confident driver and to feel comfortable when taking your road test. I would highly recommend them.

They work well to accommodate for student schedules. They’re super honest and will let you know what you need to work on or if they think you’re ready for a road test. Fantastic experience: I took multiple classes with 3 different teachers at the school, and they were all great. Although I had prior driving experience, they were fantastic in pointing out things that I was missing, and helped me improve as a driver not just for the exam, but also for real life situations. At the same time, they never requested that I take additional classes that I wouldn't have needed, and were very considerate throughout the entire process. Suffice to say, I passed the exam on the first try which was largely due to their patience and attention to detail.

Fantastic experience: learning to drive from learn well was the best decision I could have made to learn how to drive. Most of my lessons were with Chance and Leon, both instructors are friendly and good teachers. They were flexible with what hours I scheduled my lessons. Once I got the basics of driving, if I wanted to try something like driving at night or on the highway, the driving school would make that happen. By taking a lesson a week I was able to go from almost no driving experience to getting my license, with some of that time being waiting for a slot at the dmv to open so I could take my test.

Fantastic experience: Awesome Experience learning how to drive. Great people! I knew nothing about driving... couldn’t even ride a bicycle. Chance and Lou taught me driving in very short time period and I received guidance and support all the way through, up until I took the test. All you have to do just follow their instructions blindly...his technique are crisp and it helps not only to clear the test...but I use them for my day to day driving too. Very patient instructors. Chance and Lou both are best instructors! Highly recommend!!!

I had such a great time learning to drive at this school, and my driving skills grew enormously in the time I spent during lessons. Fantastic experience: When I started driving with the Learn-well driving school, I was a shaky driver and had so much to learn. With Chance as my driving instructor, I was able to gain my license in a month. Seriously one month!! He was patient, reliable, and an excellent teacher! I was able to better my driving and passed my road test because of him. I’m sure the whole team is exceptional! They are trustworthy and dedicated to making you a good but safe driver on the road. I see why they have a high pass rate, and now I am apart of the statistics. Check them out! Great company!
