Our comment from DrivingSchools.Directory about Vance's Driving School:

A Legacy of Confidence and Real-World Driving Skills

For over four decades, Vance's Driving School has established itself as a premier choice for driver education in Maine, led by the experienced and highly regarded Rick Vance. With a teaching history dating back to 1983, the school combines deep industry knowledge with a unique, engaging methodology that prioritizes both safety and student confidence. The program is designed to be more than just a requirement for a license; it aims to produce competent, defensive drivers ready for real-world challenges.

Engaging Instruction and Comprehensive Curriculum

Students consistently praise Rick Vance for his ability to make learning to drive both fun and effective. Unlike traditional, lecture-heavy courses, Vance’s classes incorporate interactive games, such as "Jeopardy" and custom quizzes, to help students memorize traffic laws and road rules. The curriculum extends beyond basic vehicle operation to include practical life skills, such as:

  • Vehicle Maintenance: Hands-on lessons covering how to check oil, windshield fluid, recharge batteries, and change tires.
  • Defensive Driving Techniques: Emphasis on visual skills, spatial awareness, and anticipating hazards on the road.
  • Test Preparation: Detailed reviews of common mistakes and specific strategies to pass the state road test with confidence.

Flexible Learning and Personalized Attention

Vance's Driving School offers a blended learning approach, combining online theoretical components with in-person classroom sessions and driving hours. This structure allows students to work at their own pace while still receiving direct, personalized instruction from Rick. The school is known for its flexibility, accommodating various schedules and even offering last-minute road test prep sessions for nervous students. Parents and students alike appreciate the patient, clear, and often humorous teaching style, which helps alleviate anxiety and builds self-assurance behind the wheel.

Proven Results and Student Satisfaction

The school boasts an impressive track record, with numerous testimonials highlighting first-time pass rates and the high quality of instruction. Many students note that they felt significantly more prepared and relaxed for their road tests thanks to Rick’s targeted coaching. The school’s reputation for thoroughness and care has earned it high recommendations from families who value a driving education that is both educational and enjoyable.

Fantastic experience: Rick is a very good driving instructor that prepared both our children to pass the driving test with ease. He is personable and flexible! His rates are also very reasonable. We would recommend this school to anyone who wants no nonsense, real driving instruction.

Fantastic experience: Rick Vance is the the best driving instructor! I would give him many many more stars if possible. I am in my 50s; Rick provided clear and practical instructions that made me comfortable and confident from the first moment behind the wheel. He’s the best!!

Negative experience: The positives: Rick teaches the material in detail and pays close attention while students are doing their driving hours, correcting and instructing along the way. However: Rick was reluctant to honor our family policy of not leaving our daughters alone with men. When the "plan changed" and he said he was going to ride alone with our daughter, rather than the other student meeting at the office - I tried to think of other solutions, and Rick became vaguely hostile, and quite pushy. I explained that it wasn't personal - just our policy. In the end, I chose to ride along, rather than his being alone with our daughter. Rick seemed offended and angry, and stated that he was offended - but acquiesced to let me join them. This experience seems like a red flag - and made us quite uncomfortable. (I see from at least one other review that it seems like we are not alone in our being concerned.) Despite attentive, detailed driving instruction, and the fact that nothing "happened," I do not recommend sending a child to this school - because of my concerns about the health and safety of the student(s).

What a bunch of bull. Of course id be offended. Its like telling me you don't trust me with.no reason at all. Do you really think id be full of joy to not be trusted. I do my job. What man would not be offended by these horrible comments that are totally not justified. Why dont you rethink this and change it to the five star appropriate as per the teaching that even you said happened. I don't even know who you are as none of my students have the last name"jordan". All of my kids have my last name. No divorces here. No second wife's. If you requested to ride along that is never a problem. What do i care, nothing changes rather there is someone in the back seat or not.
