The Parent-Teen Training Guide will help you and your teenager understand the education/training requirements and driving restrictions for drivers under the age of 18.

You may study the rules of the road and prepare for a DMV driving test by reviewing the California Driver Handbook, and the brochure, DMV’s Driving Test ( FFDL 22) Fast Facts brochure.

Driver education and driver training (behind-the-wheel) (DE/DT) may be provided by a public or private secondary school or a driving school licensed by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The Department of Education is responsible for establishing DE/DT curriculum provided by public and private secondary schools. A licensed driving school operator or owner offering DE/DT must have their curriculum preapproved by DMV before a licensed is issued.

DMV knows that it is important for you to obtain the best DE/DT for your teenager. Good communication between the parent, student, and DE/DT instructors is essential in the process. This brochure answers frequently asked questions and suggests parents ask questions about the licensed driving schools individual business practices.

To save time, DMV customers can fill out the online Electronic Driver License and ID Card application before visiting a DMV field office. If you plan to apply for a driver license or ID card during your visit, you should complete this electronic application before you arrive.

 OTHER TEEN REQUIREMENTS: - 50 Hours of practice with parents - 10 Hours of driving at night - Have held your permit for 6 months - Take your driving test at the DMV
