Top Driver is dedicated to supporting teens throughout their entire driver's license journey. From classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training to obtaining a learner's permit and passing the road test, we are here to provide the resources and support necessary to succeed.

To enroll, students must reach the age of 15 on or before the final scheduled classroom session of their program. On the Top Driver website after entering your zip code, select your Top Driver location and input your date of birth to view the classes for which you are eligible.

The classroom program comprises 30 hours of instruction divided into 15 two-hour sessions. The duration of the classroom program ranges from 3 1/2 weeks to 15 weeks, depending on the frequency of the sessions. Weekday classes meet for 2 or 4 days per week, while weekend classes typically meet once a week.

Teens enrolled in an approved Driver Education program become eligible for an Instruction Permit at age 15. The Instruction Permit is valid for two years from the date of issue.

Once students obtain their Instruction Permit and enter the permit number in their Top Driver Signals account, they can begin scheduling behind-the-wheel lessons.

Behind-the-wheel training involves a student operating the training vehicle alongside our expert instructors. Sessions are scheduled in one-hour increments and can be paired with an observation lesson. This is when a student observes another student’s driving lesson from the backseat of the training vehicle.

Students must pass both a written classroom final exam and an in-vehicle evaluation to successfully complete their Driver Education Program. If the student is unable to pass the exam in two attempts, they must retake the classroom phase of training at a cost of $200

To be eligible for the road test, students must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice (including at least 10 hours at night) in addition to their Driver Education coursework.

For over 22 years, Top Driver has been committed to keeping our roads safe offering state-certified Driver Education classes for teens and adults across the midwest.

Enroll in an Approved Driver Education Course. Teens must be at least 15 years old to start. Sign up for a state-approved course, which includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training.

Obtain a Learner’s Permit. The Permit Application is provided on day 1 of class. Apply for Permit, pass a written test and a vision screening at the DMV. Practice driving with a licensed adult (21+ years old) for at least 50 hours, including 10 hours at night.

One of Top Driver’s core values is promoting road safety. They teach defensive driving techniques, safe driving practices, and the importance of being alert and focused on the road at all times.

A hard copy certificate of completion is not mandatory. Prior to visiting a Secretary of State Facility to apply for a driver’s license, completion of driver education must be updated/posted to the applicant’s driving record.

Students must hold their permit for a minimum of 9 months from the date of issue. Additional requirements can be viewed on the Secretary of State Facility Checklist.

All 18, 19, 20-year-olds are required to complete a six-hour adult driver education course before obtaining an Illinois driver’s license, if the person has not previously held a driver’s license or successfully completed the classroom portion of a traditional driver education course.

To be eligible for in-car training, students must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Illinois Instruction Permit, Illinois Driver’s License, or a Driver’s License issued by your country of origin (International Driver’s Licenses are not accepted in Illinois). Students from out of the country may drive on their country of origin license for no more than 90 days after entering the country.

If you do not currently have a permit, we recommend taking our 6-hour online course to prepare for the Written Permit Exam at the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

Experiencia negativa: One of your drivers move directly in front of me on rt 34 Oswego. I turned right on a red light , he was in left lane behind me, as soon as I made my turn, he was directly in front....just missing my vehicle. Driver and instructor appeared to be from India. It was roughly 1000 to 1100. The vehicle was light in color, gray. In the area of Meijers store.

Experiencia fantástica: Top Driver provided an overall excellent driving education for my son. Their program is well designed and they live up to their motto of teaching driver intelligence. There were a couple of hiccups with the classroom experience and the in-car driving scheduling; however, Mr. Kraft (the director of the Lombard office, I believe) was responsive, respectful, professional and never made me feel out of place for reaching out to him with these issues. Regarding the classroom experience: My son did not particularly enjoy his classroom instructor in Wheaton as she was somewhat patronizing. The initial parent/student meeting at the first classroom session was supposed to be about 30 minutes but she dragged it out to over an hour and required each student to read a paragraph from her PowerPoint slide out loud in front of the entire group. Mr. Kraft was able to take my concerns back to the Wheaton office afterward and hopefully that situation has improved. Regarding the in-car driving scheduling: We paid for the Diamond program in order to benefit from the advanced in-vehicle lesson scheduling. With this program, you are supposed to be able to schedule your lessons about two weeks in advance of students in the Silver, Gold and Platinum programs. This is accomplished by calling customer service as early as the first business day of each month. This started out a bit counterproductive for me because the driving instructors often do not provide their availability to the schedulers that early; instead, availability is released closer to the middle of the month when the other program participants are able to schedule. I realized that not many people must participate in the Diamond program because Mr. Kraft made himself available at the beginning of each month to help coordinate my son's lesson scheduling. Generally this is done with the customer service department; however, given our participation in the Diamond program, Mr. Kraft worked directly with me over email/phone and got us scheduled at times that always worked well for us. My son was initially terrified to do the driving lessons, but his initial drive with Ms. Russo gave him self-confidence and eased his anxieties. My son was so reassured that he ended up doing every driving lesson with her. Ms. Russo had a calming presence and knew what to say to make each experience pleasant and educational. We were very lucky to have found her and benefited from her teaching skills. Top Driver is now certified to facilitate the Secretary of State road test. My son had his test with Mr. White. We weren't sure how well he did after the test because Mr. White didn't say much and disappeared to tally up his score. He revealed with an unprecedented level of excitement, however, that my son received the best score of any student he had had do the road test since they started facilitating them about 4 months prior! My son was so proud of himself and now takes his driver intelligence with him each time he drives. I am not a paid reviewer; I am not an affiliate of Top Driver; I am not benefiting from this review by any means. Mr. Kraft, Ms. Russo, Mr. White and the helpful customer service agents all deserve an A+ shout-out for helping my son happily accomplish his goals on a schedule that worked for us. Thanks to Top Driver in Lombard!
