Hi Tyler, thanks for sharing your feedback and we’re sorry you had an unpleasant experience with our staff. We have relayed your comment to our Evergreen location to address this. Regarding the rules for testing, we do not design the test rules, nor do we decide the test route. Both the test standards, and test route are set forth by the state of Colorado, and our drive testers are certified by the state to observe and report to those standards. The drive test standards are set so drivers abide by safe and lawful practices, and our drive testers cannot legally pass a student if they do not abide by those standards. We recognize that no one likes to fail, but the state has designed the test to help students understand how to drive more safely. It is therefore often the case that the individual passes on the second try after learning what issues led to the failure on the first try. Our interest is aligned with students passing but, even more so, with everyone's safety on the road. We wish you the best of luck.

Our team of State-certified drive testers are trained and audited by the State to meet State safety standards. While it is difficult failing a license test, driving is a complex skill that impacts the safety of everyone using the roadways. The license test covers over 100 items and with automatic failure for serious actions. We take our responsibility for the safety of all drivers very seriously and it is the right thing to do. We’re sorry to hear the drive test experience did not meet your expectations. We will work with this tester to help him better communicate with students and families during this exciting but stressful time.

Unfortunately, as with all tests, taking the drive test does not guarantee passing it. This is one of the many reasons we offer the retest for free, which we’re glad to see you have taken advantage of for your student.

Your tester’s comment about adult pass rates referenced the fact that adults have a higher failure rate on the drive test than teenagers. That is not a DriveSafe statistic—this is a statewide pattern. The test evaluates correct execution to the letter of the law. This includes things like complete stops at stop signs, maintaining lawful speed, checking one’s mirrors after each maneuver, and so on. Many adults neglect these safety requirements.

Drive testers are required by state law to give students an evaluation of their drive test results, which includes an explanation of what was done incorrectly and how to improve. It is a difficult situation when the tester needs to report that the student did not pass. We sincerely apologize if this evaluation, which is designed to help your student succeed in the future, was experienced in a negative way. That is, of course, not our intention.
