A Responsible Driver Driving School: Reviews
Negative experience: Extremely disappointing, If I could rate no stars, I would.. The owner is extremely rude and unprofessional. If you dare to question why the driving portion of the class is only offered 4 days a week with very limited time slots, or why students have to wait up to 6 months after completing the written portion in May, he lashes out instead of answering. In my case, he not only emailed and called me directly to shout and threaten me, but even dropped my daughter from the course entirely. At one point, he even said: “You think this will help your kid’s chances?” — who says that to a paying customer? Parents are making a significant financial investment and deserve professionalism, respect, and access to lessons they’ve paid for — not intimidation. Until this driving school addresses its severe scheduling shortages and the owner’s hostile behavior, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: best experience ever
Fantastic experience: I cannot say enough amazing things about this driving school! From start to finish, my experience was smooth, professional, and incredibly rewarding. If you're looking for a school that takes safety, responsibility, and real learning seriously, look no further—this is the place to go. A special shoutout to Brian, my instructor, who was beyond exceptional. His teaching style is calm, clear, and incredibly supportive. He has a natural gift for breaking down complex driving concepts into easy, manageable steps, and he always made sure I understood not just what to do, but why it was important. His patience and encouragement helped build my confidence every single session. Brian never once made me feel rushed or judged. Whether it was practicing parallel parking, navigating tricky intersections, or reviewing road signs and safety laws, he always remained calm, focused, and completely professional. He genuinely cares about his students becoming safe, responsible drivers—not just passing the test. The entire program is structured thoughtfully, with an emphasis on real-world driving, safety awareness, and personal accountability. They go above and beyond to ensure you're not just prepared for your test, but for a lifetime of confident, responsible driving. Thanks to Brian and this amazing school, I passed my driving test with flying colors and feel truly ready to hit the road. I honestly can't imagine a better learning experience. THANK YOU!!
Fantastic experience: If I could give more than five stars, I would without hesitation. I recently completed my course with [Driving School Name], and I am still blown away by how incredible the experience was. From the very first day to the final session, every moment was impactful, engaging, and—most importantly—transformative. But what truly set this school apart was our instructor, [Instructor’s Name], who was not just a teacher, but a mentor, a motivator, and an inspiration.Let me start by saying that before coming to this school, I had a LOT of anxiety about driving. The thought of being in control of a vehicle made me nervous, especially when it came to highway merging, left-hand turns at intersections, and parallel parking. But from the moment I met [Instructor’s Name], something changed. He immediately created a welcoming, calm, and focused environment. He had this unique ability to read the energy of each student—he knew when to be serious and when to use humor to break the tension. And somehow, he made every single lesson enjoyable, even the ones that were challenging or tedious. One of the things I respected the most about [Instructor’s Name] was his balance between fun and responsibility. He was never one of those instructors who just “got you through the course.” No—he genuinely cared about making sure each of us understood the full scope of what it means to be a safe, smart, and responsible driver. He had this way of infusing lessons with real-world stories, statistics, and examples that made everything feel relevant and serious—without ever being overwhelming. You left class each day feeling like you'd just unlocked a new level of understanding.I appreciated how he made the material so incredibly comprehensive. We didn’t just go over the rules of the road—we dove into every single aspect of driving you could imagine. I’m talking:Road signs, road conditions, and what to do in emergency situations Night driving, rain, snow, and fog conditions Highway etiquette, how to merge like a pro, and when to yield Defensive driving techniques and anticipating other drivers’ behaviors Car maintenance basics (yes, he even taught us how to check our oil and tires!) DUI laws, distracted driving dangers, and real crash statistics that made us really think The importance of patience, spatial awareness, and emotional control behind the wheelParking in tight spots, three-point turns, backing up, hill starts—you name it And he didn’t just throw information at us. He taught it in a way that stuck. Whether it was through clever analogies, hands-on demonstrations, or interactive discussions, he made sure every single concept was fully understood before moving forward. I never once felt rushed, and he never made anyone feel ashamed for asking questions—even if it was the third or fourth time they asked. And let’s talk about how well he prepared us for the driving test and real-life driving. By the time I took my road test, I felt 100% confident—not because I memorized a bunch of tricks, but because I understood the logic and responsibility behind every action I was taking. I passed with ease, and it was thanks to the rock-solid foundation he gave us.What I also loved was his constant reminder that driving is a privilege, not a right. He instilled in us this deep respect for the road, for other drivers, and for the responsibility we carry when we sit behind the wheel. He never taught through fear, but he did show us the very real dangers of reckless or distracted driving. We watched some eye-opening footage and heard true stories that drove home the point that one second of carelessness can change everything. But in
Fantastic experience: Instructor Brian is truly outstanding! He is incredibly good at what he does and always makes learning fun and engaging. His flexibility makes scheduling easy, and he’s very understanding of each student’s needs. What stands out the most is how kind and respectful he is to all the kids—he creates a positive and encouraging environment where everyone feels welcome. We’re lucky to have him!
Negative experience: The instructor was observed driving down 63rd St in Downers Grove and Westmont during evening rush hour on 4/17, wandering toward the double yellow line, while he sorted through and read a stack of paperwork on his lap. Not a good example of being a responsible driver.
Thank you for your comment. However, checking the history and video footage we didn't have a vehicle in that area all day long. We monitor all of our vehicles for speeding and have cameras on all vehicles so we can prevent these types of situations. It's possible you saw a different company.
Negative experience: There is no professionalism by the owner. He becomes belligerent and defensive. He doesn't try to problem solve or show any consideration. If you read the negative reviews, his responses are argumentative. He does not apologize or take responsibility. There was a change with the state in the middle of my daughter's session and he was no longer allowed to provide students with pink slips. He told me that he was not going to email 900 parents and tell them of this change. It's fine if there are no problems, but there are always problems.
Stephanie,
As we spoke on the phone, either I or any other driving school can change the fact that the state stop the road test waiver. You wanted me to call the state up and make them not let your daughter take the road test at DMV which is physically impossible. I apologized to you multiple times as you where yelling at me and demanding a pink waiver. We are not going to break state regulations. Professionalism is listening to your concerns and answering your questions and tolerating your harassment, not making sure you get what you want with us not following the rules and regulations of the state.
Positive experience: Summary: If you have a flexible schedule and the pick-up/drop-off feature is valuable for you, then try it I took 4 x 1.5h driving classes back in Fall 2022 (already had my learner's permit), and passed the driver's test on the first go with no negative marking on the examiner's sheet. I learnt a lot from the instructors, and they prepared me well, not just for the test, but also for general driving aspects. In particular, I appreciated the complementary pick-up/drop-off at my residence, as nearly all the other nearby driving schools did not provide this for my area. I'm an adult, so maybe that helped. My instructors had a more casual "go for it" approach, not a strict "formal" rigorous academic approach. This was a positive for me, as that meant I could do things more of my way and progress through the manuevres faster without having to "academically" master it. But I concede that some people may prefer the second approach. Also, I assume like most driving schools, you will have to arrange your own car for the test. A side-note predicament is that almost every car rental agency will not allow learner's permit drivers, even if the vehicle is rented by a full licence driver. So you would need to find a nearby family/friend. While the website is functional and shows you your timings, booking (at least for me) was done via communication with the school, through Mr. Bryan Kearney. I assume that he's got a lot to handle between managing the school, instructing sessions, and personal life. So it's unlikely he'll be free to pick-up when you call; instead, you'll need to leave a voice message. Remember to include your number in the message for him to call back on. And like any typical driving school, there will be limited timing availabilities. As I was a working adult, the difficulty of finding overlaps in our schedules resulted in the four classes being spread out over 2 months, inclusive of rescheduling from both our sides.
Fantastic experience: I enrolled my daughter in Bryan's Drivers Education course. Bryan was helpful and answered all of my questions regarding the classes, permit test and necessary paperwork. My daughter learned a lot in the classroom and after her second driving lesson with Bryan, she was able to apply the classroom material to the road. He helped her become more comfortable behind the wheel. Bryan was flexible and understanding when she had to make-up a lesson due to our schedules. We had a great experience with Bryan Kearny and Responsible Driver.
Negative experience: If I could give negative stars I would due to lack of communication and professionalism. I have taken the time to write great reviews for many places but always tend to learn my lesson and move on from bad experiences. In this case, I paid a lot of money for this school so I wanted others to have a heads up. My son attends a private school that does not offer Driver's Education. After researching we chose Responsible Driver mostly due to close proximity to our home. It was very costly but I figured my son would be receiving great instruction so it would be worth it. Right from the start it was unorganized and information lacking. I emailed the person of contact, Brian Kearney, with a few general questions. No reply. Tried calling, no call back. Emailed again and his response was very short and dismissive, not to mention uninformative. I learned there really was no curriculum, timeline or syllabus. Not one he was willing to share anyways. There were barely any resources and tests were grammatically a mess. My son told me he could barely understand some of the final exam questions because they didn't make sense. Students were barely kept the full class time. I would drop off my son and 40min later he was calling me to get him from what was supposed to be a 2 hour class. As a driver education teacher myself for the past 20yrs I know the curriculum and what the state requires academically and regarding classroom hours needed to be eligible for behind the wheel. My son had 3 different instructors over the summer. They were nice but there was no cohesion. Videos were shown which is a great supplement to class but it was the main source of instruction week after week. I was basically teaching my son at home what he wasn't learning in this $500 class. Huge waste of money. I figured he would just get through it, hard lesson learned. And he did. After the final exam my son was glad it was over but he then had to complete BTW. He was given a code to sign up for driving slots. When he went to sign up the system was not working. I called and emailed Mr. Kearney and after a week of no response, I called again. He rudely told me my son did not turn in some paperwork from the first week (which we did). I asked him what was missing and he could not tell me. I went back to my son's school and had the office re-fill out the paperwork and physically drove it to the central location in Hinsdale so we could start BTW. A very nice instructor in Hinsdale assured me that he would give the paperwork to Mr. Kearney and the online slots would open immediately after that. Online never opened for my son. I gave it a few days and emailed Mr. Kearney saying I dropped off the paperwork and to please open the online registration. His email back was rude and on the verge of belligerent, staring with "I told you to be patient...." In all my years of teaching I could never even fathom speaking to a parent the way he spoke to me on several occasions. I replied that I would like letter of completion for the classroom and a refund for the BTW portion that my son never even started. He gave me such a hard time and again was angry and rude. He finally agreed to a partial/minimal refund. I agreed because I wanted this to be OVER at this point. I enrolled my son in another BTW program but could not start there without the letter of completion. It took over 2 weeks and when I called to see if he sent the letter and refund he told me it could take up to 6 weeks. We live 6 miles from LaGrange. I asked if I could come get it and he told me to be patient and just wait. Sorry Mr. Kearney, my patience ran out a long time ago with your inorganization, lack of professionalism and bad attitude. You are supposed to be providing a quality service to the community, to young people. Maybe try working on those communication skills a bit. To think you actually run this program is baffling. And thank you to the kind instructors at the Hinsdale location who were nothing but helpful and cordial to me. Lesson learned. Costly does not always equal quality.
Amy,
You requested a letter of completion on June 12th for the classroom. You received the letter on June 14th. You knew that your enrollment was non-refundable and we still refunded you a portion of what you paid. You waited until you cashed the cash we sent you, then you decide to put this review. We worked with you to make you happy and did everything you requested in a timely manner.
Fantastic experience: The instructor gave my daughter confidence to drive in different situations as she demonstrated readiness to advance, giving her guidance throughout the drives and constructive feedback. I believe she is now prepared to drive on her own when she gets her license.
Negative experience: I have tried repeatedly to contact someone at responsible driver and they do not respond. the cancelled the class my kid was enrolled in so we did an on line one and now cannot set up the driving part or get the application for a permit. very annoying.
State laws of Driver Education requires all students to complete the classroom prior to scheduling driving lessons. Your daughter has completed 2 sessions in 6 months. The class was cancel due to COVID-19 which was out of our control. All of our regulations are in the Parent letter you received when you signed up. We received 2 calls and 2 emails today from you and returned your phone call within 2 hours. We are in the office daily to answer questions or address concerns.
