Greg's Driving School of Ellicott City: Reviews
Negative experience: Scheduling hands on driving lessons are extremely difficult with this driving school. My kid signed up for the class and lessons. We paid for the class and the lessons up front but we have not been able to scale a single driving lesson so far, they won’t do it over the phone and there is never availability on their website! This is a rip off!!
Positive experience: instructor annoying and yells when you drive. gets mad at you if you don't back into a parking space at 0.00001 mph. other than that its fine
Negative experience: Do not send your child here. The classes are not interactive at all and the people who drive with your children will not even give their full attention. My child’s instructor was blasting sports on the radio and scrolling TikTok while he had my child driving on highways in rush hour. If you want to just get hours, go here but if you want someone who will help create a responsible driver, go elsewhere.
Fantastic experience: My experience with driving instructor Elise was fantastic. Off the bat, Elise gave me encouragement and valuable input about my driving skills that made me feel more secure on the road. I had a previous lesson at a different Greg’s with another instructor that was extremely negative, which left me overcome with anxiety about doing my final behind the wheel session. Elise quickly eased my anxieties, and gave me my confidence back. She prepares you not just for your test, but for your life as a safe and defensive driver. I cannot recommend Elise enough.
Fantastic experience: My experience was a reevaluation of my Behind the Wheel lessons with the instructor Elise. She understood my problems very well and gave me criticisms that were to the point and helped me actually understood what I was doing wrong and how I could fix it. She gave me tips that that will actually stick and helped me overcome my anxiousness about driving. She not only helped me realize my problems with my knowledge, but with mental blocks I had that were making things difficult. She has a smooth and easy to understand teaching style and was fantastic and instrumental in helping me become a better driver.
Negative experience: There is a Coach Zach at this establishment that is not fit to be a driving instructor. My younger sister had him as an instructor. It was her first time on a highway, and the instructor thought it was a good idea to yell at her while she was driving. He also made remarks that are unnecessary and rude (talking about how she has no friends/social life). In addition to all of this, he was on his phone watching a sports game and eating snacks during the in-car lesson, even having my sister drive him to a 7/11 to get food, not to mention he also threw trash out the window. My sister came home crying about the whole experience, and that is not okay. If Coach Zach continues to work at this establishment I worry for the kids that have him as a driving instructor.
Negative experience: From the beginning things escalated when she began screaming at me over simple instructions, making me feel incredibly anxious and unsafe. She even admitted that she “yells a lot” but didn’t know why—yet continued doing it. Instead of providing clear, calm guidance, she created a hostile and intimidating environment that left me feeling traumatized and discouraged from continuing my lessons. No instructor should make a student feel this way, especially when learning such an important skill. If you’re looking for a patient and supportive instructor, I strongly suggest finding someone else.
Negative experience: We've been with Greg's for more than 6 months and have had the auto scheduler but have only been able to get 2 lessons, we had to postpone the driver's test despite being eligible for it in every other criteria other than in car lessons. I've only had two instructors so far and Greg's is 50/50 on good instructors, the first instructor I had was abysmal while the other was my teacher during the classroom lessons and was decent.
Negative experience: In-person lessons were overall terrible. I only had two instructors total. The female instructor was nice overall; she just raised her voice occasionally, which came off as intense (she did make it clear that she has the tendency to do that), but the male instructor I had was a nightmare to work with and was EXTREMELY rude. He yelled and criticized when I did something wrong rather than instructing me on how to do better (he even cursed at me after one of my mistakes), and I tried to ask him a question regarding the curriculum, and he yelled "UH UH UH" over me so I couldn't ask the question. I expected real instruction after my parents paid so much money for me to have these lessons. Out of all 3 lessons, the instructors caused me such intense anxiety that I almost cried and felt the need to pull over at least once. During my last lesson I just wanted to be done and be gone, so I did not point out any issues, but trust and believe I will tell any new drivers to stay clear of this place.
Negative experience: Hii Friday I had a practice class of 2 hour with your driving school from 12pm-2pm I had a very bad experience with your instructor.he was very rude.As I am the first time learner of driving he asked me how old your are why you not learn driving before. If I know how to drive then why I came to you for learning. He gave me only 1 hour class instead of 2 hour.this is not a good thing.very rude instructor.he told me you are not ready for driving how can I teach you.And for this Reason I also cancelled my coming class on 18th October on Friday.
Negative experience: I've had a terrible experience with this driving school where I sent my sister. The staff was incredibly rude, frequently raised their voices, and couldn't effectively instruct the students. I'm deeply disappointed with their behavior and wouldn't recommend this school to anyone.
Negative experience: We have had the absolute worst experience with this company. They apparently sponsor my sons high school so we went with them. But would not recommend to anyone else! Sure you can sign up for drivers ed. But don’t count on getting the required 6 hours of on road lessons. We have been trying to get our first lesson for my son for over 8 weeks. They never have any openings online. I have called three times and never gotten anywhere. I was supposedly put on a waitlist for October classes and no one ever contacted me. I check daily and have never seen a single spot that isn’t 10am or noon or 2 during the school day. Um how do they expect high schoolers to do that?? Wish we could start over with a different company and will def be using someone else for my daughter!
Ms. Shackman,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns.
Firstly, I'd like to clarify that the slots you see available online are those that remain after other students have scheduled. We cater to students of varying ages and commitments, and indeed, the most popular times tend to be after school, work, and on weekends.
I reviewed the records and found that your student registered on August 14th, and we received a call from you on September 14th. We make every effort to accommodate our students and are proactive in reaching out to help with scheduling.
If you believe that another driving school might be a better fit for your needs, we genuinely understand. Should you choose to explore this option, I recommend contacting schools directly to inquire about their availability. At present, many schools, given the high demand, have schedules running into December.
Should you decide to transfer, we will ensure a smooth process and you'll be eligible for a refund for the unused driving lessons. Please send any related requests to [email protected].
Thank you for your understanding, and we're here to support whatever decision you make.
Negative experience: The in classroom portion is great. Just don’t expect to get any options/availability for behind the wheel training.
Negative experience: I started here in June of 2021 during the virtual classes, gregs is the only driving school I know that doesn't offer in person lessons. On my completion of the required lessons I went to schedule my in cars in January, I have only been able to find one lesson and the person on the phone said I have to wait 2 months for another lesson. Don’t waste your time here and go find a competent school like street smarts instead
Fantastic experience: Learned how to drive here a long time ago and felt confident in my ability to pass the test
Fantastic experience: ( second time back review) I had to come back on here and make another review because i had another great experience!! This time with mr.carol, he was very informative as well and just great all around, if your coming here I most definitely recommend mr.Carol or ms.Tracy I’ve had such GREAT improvements! ( first review ) My driving school experience today with ms.Tracey was great !! I felt so comfortable with her as my teacher, her teaching impacted me right away and she gave me a good understanding of everything, also she answered all of my questions. Even with me being new to driving I could tell she trusted me and when I made mistakes she firmly corrected them just enough! I look forward to driving with her again.
Negative experience: Embed review Write an update Edit review 10/23/2020 Very disappointed in Greg's Driving School in Ellicott City. 1. Answer your phone! 2. The message when you call directs you to go online to schedule, then you go online and it says there are no appointments available and if further assistance is needed, please call our office. WTH? 3. Um... maybe answer your phone? 4. Get an email address since you DON'T answer your phone. My son was scheduled for months In advance for his first In-car lesson and we received a text cancelling the lesson which also stated that he would be put on waiting list. We have heard nothing further. 5. ANSWER YOUR PHONE! If you don't have enough staff to answer the phone, then hire some more staff. 6. Perhaps get voicemail since you DO NOT ANSWER YOUR PHONE! I'm sure that I'm not the only person frustrated by the runaround. Let's all chase our tails around and around. GET IT TOGETHER GREG'S DRIVING SCHOOL.
Negative experience: Their drivers ed class was a good experience. But my experience with waiting for them to catch up from quarantine is frankly annoying. Only open 5 days a week, open for short hours when people with their permit can drive later then they’re open- seem to have no real effort in helping people get through their Incars in a timely fashion. I’ve known of people who said their instructor hasn’t shown up for their slot and wont help people work around their schedule. Overall they’ve handled the switch back to somewhat functional business poorly and I don’t feel the money people have pre paid are being treated like a priority opposed to a burden they’ll slowly get to when the instructors want. :/
Negative experience: I am really disappointed and dissatisfied with Greg’s Driving School especially the Ellicott City branch! I was scheduled for my driving test on the 3rd of August and I went and I was rejected to take my driving test and told to reschedule mainly because my instructor had made a mistake with filling my information. He entered in my permit number wrong which is so unprofessional and very disturbing. I live all the way in Columbia and had to take an Uber of about 100 dollars only to be told I need to reschedule because the information they had on file was different from what they had received. John from the Ellicott City branch was my instructor and he is very unprofessional and I hope he gets fired immediately or I will have to take some Legal action myself! This is very very unprofessional and I am highly disappointed in Greg’s Driving School!-
Mistakes can happen. This is why we require students to read and sign our parent/student agreement to ensure we have an understanding and things go smoothly. The agreement explicitly states that students are required to allow a minimum of 3 business days between your completion date and your road test. Your final drive was Friday and your test Monday. It wasn’t enough time.
We also advise students to NOT schedule your road test until you’ve completed. This is also stated in the agreement form.
Three business days allows us to follow up with our report and fix any potential errors. This is why it is very important that the information you input on your account profile is correct.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Anthony. Makes us so disappointed to hear what you went through on Monday. We hope you get scheduled soon and are able to get on the road in no time! Best of luck to you.
Negative experience: A Greg’s driving school female instructor threatened to call the police on me and my wife today, 9/10/19, in Ellicott City, MD, on St. John’s Lane, because it was taking us too long to make a left turn into the elementary school to pick up our daughter. The instructor got out of her car (leaving her student by himself) and tapped on our window and told us we were blocking traffic and that we need to move the car. We were simply waiting for an opportunity to make the turn. Because I decided I wasn’t going to move the car till I had the opportunity she stated “Well I’m calling the cops.” Seems like these kind of things happen a lot to black people.
Negative experience: Car 1414 is an idiot. Brake light out, no turn signals, allowed 100 people to cut everyone off in a construction, poor decision making, driving 10 mph under in the FAST lane. Hope this girl gets a new job she shouldn't teach anyone to drive
Fantastic experience: Staci is a good instructor. Ask for Julius Dorsey for in car driving lessons. If you guys include the driving test for the fee you are charging it would be nice. Additional charges for the driving test is not that good.
Negative experience: My foster mom had written a check from TX to Gregs. For my class. It had my name written on the cashiers check. As it was stated it was received to Gregs and signed by a "Kevin Star" who Gregs says they have no employee by that name. If your school is the one who checks the mail than you should know who signs for your mail. Never again will I trust a check to get received to Gregs and given into the appropriate hands.
Fantastic experience: Our son enrolled in the driving school with a lot of apprehension but determined to get his driving license. Thanks to Mary Moore and his driving instructor Kevin Lamb, Alex has overcome his challenges and got his license. Mary has been extremely supportive in finding best accommodation for Alex. Kevin is an outstanding professional , very competent in interacting with Alex, patient, understanding his specific needs, and adapting the sessions to help Alex gain the skills and confidence to pass successfully the driving test. We want to thank again to the school and specifically to Mr. Kevin Lamb, they made a huge positive impact in our son's live. Thank you Mary, thank you Kevin! Dan Petrescu
