Fantastic experience: Test was fair

Fantastic experience: Road Star Driving School provided me with an excellent learning experience. My instructor, Brian Singer, demonstrated professionalism and delivered clear, concise instruction. The administrative staff were equally helpful, responding promptly and patiently to all inquiries. I highly recommend Road Star to prospective drivers.

Negative experience: really bad experience with them. I booked a 6 hour driving lesson and each lesson seems to be going really well and the instructor seems to be really friendly saying u are doing really well except u need to improve on this and that, and u need to practice. And when I go there at my fifth lesson, the instructor just said do u practice for 6-9h without us. I was just shocked and no one told me that, and no one told me that before, they just say practice and who the hell know practice with them or practice without them. There is no warning or anything else saying the world ‘practice’ means practice by yourself. They expect u to do a comprehension test on each word they said.

Negative experience: So far not happy. As others have said, you can’t see the driving schedule until paying which is very shady. But when you do pay, the only times available are during school hours, making it impossible for a student enrolled in school to do. I guess the reason the summer is their “busy season” is because it is the ONLY time available unless you are homeschooled. Asking my credit card to cancel payment. It stinks because the only other option appears to be completely full.

Positive experience: I am giving a 3 star rating because my daughter's instructor was great. He was very patient with her and made her feel at ease. I also liked that it was easy to book our drives online. However, it is VERY frustrating that when I'd call about anything, nobody answered the phone, nor returned calls. I went in there twice, because of not getting through to anyone. There is a girl working, who could seriously work on the way she communicates. She seemed annoyed, and has no customer service skills. The fact that I had to drive there to talk to anyone (more than once), or get a response, is why I can only give a 3 star rating. Hire someone with better work ethic and customer service skills.

Negative experience: Won’t recommend. As the other review said “they get your money then don’t care”

Ryan Gick 2 years ago

Negative experience: Zero stars should be an option for this company!! Road Star Driving School is amongst the worst businesses I’ve had the displeasure of encountering. They get your money then don’t care. My 16 year old twins completed their course. The instructors were good, but the business side of it is a dismal failure. 4 of their original 12 drives were cancelled. Road Star’s communication about the cancelled drives were terrible, twice we got emails twice it was last minute and we didn’t get emails. Each time was time off work for someone and a hour of driving across town and back. I do understand that stuff happens and drives get cancelled, that’s why we have phones to call or text. The main reason I’d urge anyone to go with any other company available though is the fact that throughout the duration of the course, Road Star didn’t return a single call or email from me (I left multiple messages and multiple emails). I also thought that it could be poor on site management at the Lafayette Branch so I left a comment on FB on Kyle Meek under a post where he was bragging on his achievements with Road Star. (Kyle is the owner of 6 of the Road Stars in Indiana including Lafayette). The comment was alerting him to the terrible service of the office manager (thinking he may genuinely not know). I also left 5 screenshots of other similar reviews. It took 4 minutes for Kyle to delete my comments and block me. Still never received communication from Road Star. Obviously the terrible service and the “I don’t care cause I already have your money” attitude of this company goes straight back to the owner. There are other driving schools here in Lafayette including one that comes to you and picks up your student. I have no experience with this person but it has to be an improvement over Road Star Driving School!

Negative experience: Several years ago I had a horrific experience at this driving school. Jill Anderson was pretty nice. Barry was also professional. There were instructors that are there to actually help the students. But this old white guy named Paul he was a borderline predator. I had to complain about Paul's behavior and Jill had him fired temporarily. But I have a feeling that they rehired him shortly I left.

Negative experience: Instructors are very nice and deserve 5 stars. The office lady has ZERO customer service skills. ZERO! Besides never getting my numerous calls answered. I walked in, no hello, how are you it was Do you have a scheduled drive? Followed by Sit down over there the instructors aren't here yet. To pay that much money and to be talked to in that tone is uncalled for. She was very argumentative!!!

Negative experience: College students and parents be aware! So frustrated with this place. Called several times to ask about getting my daughter driving lessons. They said she needed a permit so we signed up and paid for the test / driving lessons and my daughter did the online classes and it said she couldn’t take the driving test because she is not a resident. I had asked this question before because she is a student in Indiana to this company before we signed up . They will not refund my money now that we can’t get a permit to get her driving lessons. The lady is very rude and has an attitude.

Negative experience: I would be giving this place a five for the instructors. They are absolutely amazing. What I have a problem with, however, is the office. My mother and I have emailed them a total of four times today along with multiple phone calls. My mother went as far as to going to the actual site to try and find somebody. I have been trying to do the last drive (the 6th one) for over a month. They have cancelled it up to four times now due to some sort of problem with an instructor or weather. I am going in a few days for my drivers test and had my last drive scheduled for the day before. Like clock work- my drive got canceled. I have spent all day trying to get my account reactivated because they’ve canceled so many drives, I’ve had to go past my deadline. I am now left with a drivers test in a few days without my sixth drive in. Thanks Roadstar. Learn to pick up your phones and read your emails so you don’t cost a child what they’ve been looking forward to since October.

Negative experience: I’d give 0 stars if I could. The office manager Alicia McGuire is totally incompetent. First of all nobody responds to voicemails at all. Second of all they take your money and ask you to take driving lessons elsewhere and refuse to refund your money. She’s an absolute thief. You’re better off going to any other driving school.

Negative experience: No one is ever in the office, we tried calling multiple times to resolve a pretty big issue, they forgot to give my son a vital piece of paperwork to get his license and then told us wrong information when we finally got ahold of someone. When the issue finally got resolved, my husband sat in the parking lot for an hour; after working a12hr night shift, waiting for them to "open" or answer the phone, when they were already supposed to be open. They never did... I had to make a special trip to Lafayette to pick it up. We paid an insane amount of money for this so he could get his license early and were met with incompetence most of the time. Their whole program needs to be fixed...

Hello,
I am Alicia, the Office Manger. Thank you for your review. I’m sorry you were not pleased with your experience, that is not how we like do business. If a voicemail is left it will be returned the same day. This is the busiest time of the year and we’re short staffed but I am in the office weekdays 9am-3pm, today included. Nobody was waiting, if I need to step out of the office there is always a note on the door. Please feel free to email me at lafayette@roadstardrivingschool and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you.

Hello,
I am Alicia, the Office Manager. I apologize for your bad experience, that is not how we like to do business. This is the busiest time of the year and we are short staffed but if a voicemail is left is returned the same day.
You can see your scheduled drives anytime through your online Road Star account. Thank you.

Negative experience: I have had 4 children use RoadStar and have referred several others in the past. Prior to my last child, I would have given them 4.5 out of 5 stars. But after my last child and our experience with them, I would not recommend at least the Lafayette, IN office ever again. If management was improved, it is a great program because it is on-line and flexible with your schedule. But since the office staff is extremely poor now and terrible managed, I would not go back and would look for a different option. They state their office hours are 10-4, but they never answer the phone or return calls. I would understand if I had this occur once, but my son had multiple issues with his account getting shutdown and I called and left several messages over several weeks and sent emails and they would never respond. Finally, I called both the Carmel and Fishers office and the Fishers office returned my call the next day and the very kind gentleman said he would get my issue fixed and did. Then, when my son completed his drives (very nice instructors BTW). They require you now to schedule your test drive in person or over the phone (before the instructors could set these test drives up.) Tried again to call. Same results! No answer or returned calls. So my husband ended up driving 35 mins to make the appt. Next saga was when my son took his driving test, the instructor told him that they would do the parallel parking test first bc that is the most likely part to fail and then failed him because when he parked he slightly hit the curb. So told him he was done and told him to go back and reschedule in 2 weeks. So versus paying and trying to get ahold of them again. He went online and scheduled with the BMV (no parallel parking involved) and then took the test and had his license in 45 mins with no $100 extra fee!

Negative experience: Take this for what it's worth - there aren't a lot of options for driver's ed in town so you gotta do what you gotta do to get a license. Neither of my kids thought the online classes were very useful. Both of my kids said the actual driving lessons were fine and they learned from the hands-on instruction. Tip: Take the driving exam at the BMV. The instructors are overly critical and require parallel parking which the BMV does not. Plus the BMV doesn't charge for the test.

Road Star Driving School
Road Star Driving School

Thank you for your response. We use a third-party online course for our students, and it's the only one that works within our online system. As for the drive test, per Indiana Administrative Code, everyone including the BMV must include parallel parking in their drive test. If the examiner at the BMV is not adding this skill, they are breaking Indiana Code and are subject to termination. I have informed the BMV, and this will be remedied. Thanks.

Positive experience: The instructors are fantastic and they did an amazing job helping me get my license especially holli. The office absolutely sucks though. They never are in there and they never answer their phone. I left messages and nobody returned them and I all I needed was to pick up a paper from them.

I do apologize that you had trouble getting in touch with our office. We do have a full-time office manager to keep things like this happening. She was out of the office with COVID around the time of this review so they may have been the issue. If it was a CDE form you needed, we do offer that form through your online portal. Thank you for your review.

Negative experience: The instructors are professional at teaching and making my daughter feel more confident driving. However, I feel like the way the website works is shady somehow. They'll make you put your payment information in first thing when you make an account, before you can view the schedule for available drives to see if it fits your time and need. The first available drive when my daughter registered was like 5 weeks ahead, and she was planning to come home in around that time, so she would have just gone home and practiced with me (she'd got her permit), but because she already paid and there's no refund, she had to stick with them and postpone the trip home. Another time when my daughter logged in to do the online course, her computer lagged a bit and after she tried to fix it and it got back to normal, the drive she scheduled for the next day was somehow cancelled and they charged her $35 for cancelling the drive within 24 hours prior to it (she did not know what happened). She emailed to see what happened but receiving no response. She couldn't schedule a different drive until paying the fee. Overall, she enjoyed the drives so far but has been pretty frustrated with the website of this school.

Road Star Driving School
Road Star Driving School

Thank you for your review. It is true the schedule is not made available until an account is created and the balance paid, but you may always contact the office to check availability before registering. Depending on the time of year we range from being 1-5 weeks out with scheduling. If you are attempting drives end of summer through beginning of fall this is the busy time and we will be booked further out. We do allow students to schedule their own drives, so we encourage individuals in your situation to check the schedule regularly as there are daily cancellations.

Negative experience: This school seems to have a problem complying with their own rules when it comes to service and refunds. I also had to go to my bank to receive a refund after the cancelled their classes and didn't have one to suit my child. Again the owner was also rude to me as they were others it's not bad enough we are going through a crisis but the way they are handling customers is very unprofessional. And they never even had me to sign a contract as a parent of the mi or child. Im just glad we had the contract and the recordings to back us up and our bank was able to refund our money otherwise we would have been out of hundreds of ollarsxwith no recourse and it's very sad when they don't see that these teenagers work hard to pay for their services and they talk to them like they are beneath them when the fact that they are unable to provide services is not on the side of the child but a natio Al crises that is affecting us all the only difference is that the federal government has their back who has our kids. Oh that's right that what us parents are for. Fighting for her rights taught her that if you are not right u can't keep their money. Thank God for banking laws.

Road Star Driving School
Road Star Driving School

Thank you for your review. All customers agree to our terms and conditions when registering online. This is in fact your contract. We did have to cancel the in-class sessions as was mandated by the government because of the pandemic. We offered to move you to the online course as it was the only course available, again because mandated by the government. 8 months later, we were still willing to complete your drives and your classes. At no time were you unable to get the services in which you paid.

James Wilbourn 5 years ago

Negative experience: This school is a joke during this trying time they know we are in a pandemic and that insurance covers them. They took our teenagers monies and refused to return it even though they cancelled the classes they told her she had to enroll in another class that she wouldn't be in the city for If they could even have it at that time. They them told her to do online disregarding the fact that she has a disability that prevents it. Not only that but the receptionist and the owner are both rude. He would not let me get a wordi n edgewise and basically told us he didn't call me to discuss it but tell me what we were going to do and that he had enrolled her into an online cl It's ashame we had to go to assour bank with our contract and get our monies back. Their customer service is terrible

Road Star Driving School
Road Star Driving School

Thank you for your review. Yes, it is true that the class was cancelled due to the government mandate. All schools went to virtually learning for an extended period of time. There's really nothing any business in the education field could do other than revert to online education. We still did the 1 on 1 driving with extreme precautions for COVID and luckily, we haven't had a single COVID related incident since the pandemic hit.

Fantastic experience: My wife tausha and I signed up our daughter last year. We are very happy and impressed with the instructor myrna. She was very patient with our daughter and kind. We decided to do all the regular drives with myrna. Even the office manager was extremely helpful when I signed my daughter up. As I was very uncomfortable and unsure of what to expect. Road star made the whole process very painless. And we are very grateful and happy to have chosen road star driving. I would recommend it to anyone who has a child turning driving age.

Positive experience: My daughter enjoyed doing drivers ed here. She always liked her instructors. She learned quite a bit. I was impressed with her driving skills once she got her permit. It was definitely worth taking the driving test to get her liscense too. Very good price for the test. The only complaint would be they dont have any options for scheduling the drivers test. Most of them are evenings and the ones they do have for daytime is way booked out.

Wendy Gutwein 5 years ago

Positive experience: We have used Road Star Driving school for all of our children and think the instructors have done a very good job teaching and preparing them to drive. The appointments are easy to book online and it is fantastic that the instructors can pick up some of the kids from their high schools. We have had several different instructors and the drives have gone well. I am able to easily get in touch with a helpful and friendly representative at the local office if I have questions. We opted for the online course. This was easy to access from home; our only complaint is the content cannot be downloaded as quickly as our kids were able to read through it, causing the process to take longer than we think is needed to learn the material. (they had to stop studying and wait several hours to a day for new content to download). The reason I am rating 4 stars is I would like to be able to schedule their final Drive Skills Test immediately following the 6th drive. Their computer system does not allow for this, forcing us to make another round trip to their facility on a day separate from their final drive. Overall, we are very satisfied with our experience!

Road Star Driving School
Road Star Driving School

Thank you so much for your review, and we absolutely understand some of the inconveniences you experienced. Unfortunately, the state regulates our industry quite extensively. The state requires the online course to take 30 hours, so we are actually required to slow students down and not let them finish as quickly as they would like. Also, the state only allows for them to do 3 hours in a day. So once they have been online for 3 hours, we are required to end the session until the following calendar day. There are similar restrictions regarding the Drive Test, which is why they can only be scheduled by the office manager. One of the state regulations is that the drive test cannot be done the same day as the last drive.

We appreciate the opportunity to teach your family to become safe drivers, and let us know if there is any other way in which we can help.

Negative experience: Several of the student drivers while with instructors have commited dangerous illegal vehicle manuvers. Just today, another student tried to illegally pass a turning vehicle in a single vehicle lane and almost rear ended them. Please explain to these students better why its dangerous to pass when you cant see in front of other cars and why you dont enter an intersection in a turn lane until its clear. I understand other people dont know the difference but as a school with signs on the side of your cars, you should be doing better.

Road Star Driving School
Road Star Driving School

Per the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle handbook page 53, our instructors are 100% right in telling students to pull out into the intersection to turn on a green light. We do wait for traffic to clear or the light to change before proceeding. This is not illegal. We are a State accredited reputable company and have been in business teaching students for many years, and would never do something that wasn't in the student's best interest. I believe our record shows this.

Negative experience: Do not sign-up with this organization. We were attempting to sign my son up for the 6 drives and despite the website saying that we didn't need to pay upfront, we were charged and told that no refund was possible despite the oragnization have NO availbiltiy to provide the drives for over a month. I don't like to write negative reviews, but the business pracrices of this organizaiton are very shady and I cannot recommend them to anyone else.

Road Star Driving School
Road Star Driving School

Richard, I am very sorry you weren't happy when you couldn't get drives scheduled right away. I did offer you dates, it just wasn't in the time frame you wanted. This is our busy time of the year so drives are hard kind of to come by, but there are always cancellations. The students have 180 days to complete everything so there was more than enough time to get the drives done. We have been in business many years and strive to meet the needs of customers, and have proven that time and time again. Our reputation and success stands with thousands of satisfied customers.
