Tanner City Auto School: Reviews
Negative experience: Horrible company I’m sure u see the reviews just don’t go here spend your money somewhere else there multiple schools within 10-15 minutes from this school that are much better options actually there’s more with way better reviews I’m gonna show u one that’s way better
Fantastic experience: Well deserved applause. The instructor was very very understanding. Got my DL on the first trial after a one session with him. Thanks A lot
Congratulations Alfred! Thank you for the applause and the 5 star review! I will share your kind words with your instructor. We appreciate it.
Fantastic experience: Really nice instructors that give clear instructions on what to do. My instructor was Jack and he was amazing and he really knew what he was talking about!!
Hi Erin - thank you so much for the 5 stars! We agree Jack is great and I know he will really appreciate your review.
Fantastic experience: I regret my mistake during my first road test in 2019. It's a great driving school if you are not 100% ready for your road test you just have to take the driving lessons again, I I failed my practical test after hand signals I couldn't show how to make windshield wipers and then I failed That's because this place didn't show me. Kind and respectful, boasting that I would get my driver's license but wasn't ready to get it yet; but I already have it, I passed my practical exam in February 2020. Much respect and appreciation!
Thank you so much for the 5 star post. We very much appreciate it!
Fantastic experience: Jack prepared me so well to take my test! Very thorough with going through the steps, he’s the best.
Hi Julia,
Thank you for posting a review. We agree Jack is one of the best! We have amazing instructors at Tanner City.
Fantastic experience: Jack was great, very helpful
Thank you Maegan!
Fantastic experience: My experience at tanner city went really well, mostly because of my driving instructor Jack. At the beginning when I was still learning he was very patient with me and always gave me helpful tips and tricks to remember certain things. I began to book him for every lesson, and I greatly improved because of his amazing teaching. his teaching style left me very prepared for the test, and I can’t thank him enough!
Hi Audrey
Thank you for posting your review of Tanner City. I am glad your experience was so positive. We agree Jack is a great instructor as are all the instructors on our team! I am happy you were so well prepared. Thank you for choosing Tanner City!
Fantastic experience: Thank you Jack Fenton for being such a great driving instructor. I would highly recommend him as he helped teach me a lot of important tips and tricks.
Hi Tyler
Thank you for your kind words about Jack at Tanner City. I will pass on your review regarding his instruction if he hasn't seen it already.
Fantastic experience: hi i had a good experience with tanner city, mostly because of my driving instructor named jack. he is a very good teacher and a really kind person. he was so patient with me when i was learning
Thank you for posting your review of Tanner City. I am glad Jack's patience and kindness helped in the process!
Fantastic experience: Our son went through Tanner City and had an amazing experience. The instructors were great and classes were pretty easy to get. Highly recommend, Dennis was his favorite instructor. The office was easy to work with, and they were able to work around my sons busy schedule.
Hi David,
Thank you so much for taking the time to post about Tanner City. We appreciate the positive review! I am happy road lessons were readily available and the office was easy to work with. Dennis will be thrilled to know he was a favorite. Thank you again!
Fantastic experience: Best hands down! The instructors completely focus on each students needs and instruction is so personalized. I felt so comfortable every step of the way. My daughter passed with flying colors!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your experience with Tanner City. I am glad it was positive and you felt so comfortable. I will share your kind words with our instructors. Thank you again. Congratulations to your daughter!
Fantastic experience: I just wanted to get on here and say that I have had a good experience with Tanner city. They have been very informative with exactly what was expected and needed for my daughter with getting her permit, what to expect with booking road lessons and the role us parents have in the process. So far we have had zero issues booking road lessons. I think some people need to understand the process and understand that every business had to get back on track after dealing with Covid and how everything was put on hold for awhile. Some have made bad reviews but didn't take any of this into consideration. Most driving schools faced the same issues. I would recommend Tanner city to family and friends.
Hi Jessica,
Thank you so much for this positive review and for choosing Tanner City for your daughter's driving school. I am glad your expectations are being met and you and your daughter are having a good experience. Thank you for taking the time to share. We appreciate you!

Tanner City
Fantastic experience: I don’t leave reviews very often. I truly cannot thank Brenda with Tanner City Auto School enough for all that she has done for me with road lessons in preparation for my road test. I was not expecting much going to Tanner City Auto School after bad experiences with iDrive Auto school in the past. However, I am happy to say I was very pleasantly surprised with my experiences driving with Brenda. From our very first lesson to my most recent lesson today, I have always had a wonderful experience (nothing could have been better). On every driving lesson I’ve had, Brenda has printed out various types of handouts for me to keep. I love how she happily accommodated and continues to accommodate me. She is willing to take handwritten notes on each and every lesson and on whatever we were doing (ie, backing up in a straight line, 3 point turn, parking on hills, parallel parking, etc) and exactly the steps to do whatever we were doing… I ask her to write everything we were doing down onto the notes packet(s)— literally step by step— after we were doing them, and she is not only happy to do so, but she also includes very helpful pointers/ tips/ reminders (and sometimes in different colored pens if she has them). Her super helpful, neat handwritten notes are a really nice reference when driving outside of our lessons. Whenever I go driving with Brenda, she is always very punctual (usually 10+ minutes early), professional and courteous (ie, When she knew she would be running a few minutes late she called me and gave me plenty of notice, and she went over our initial one hour lesson by a really decent amount of time, to compensate for the few minutes of lost time.) I also appreciate how understanding she was when it came to a few cancellations I had to make, one of which was the night prior. She didn't mind and was honestly more concerned that I was okay. This meant a lot to me that she didn’t care about the lesson cancellation, she was just concerned about my well being. Perhaps most of all, I love how Brenda is so patient and kind, taking the time to answer and thoroughly answer any and all of my questions. Also, I truly appreciate how she doesn’t mind repeating information... I need repetition A LOT and Brenda doesn’t mind taking that extra time. I have had 10 driving lessons since April, and so far every lesson has been nothing short of amazing!! I can’t recommend Tanner City Auto School enough, and I look forward to my upcoming road lessons! (I’m very confused by all the negative reviews.) ~ Best, Jessica Bloom.
Hi Jessica,
Thank you so much for this wonderful review. We really appreciate the time you have taken to share your Tanner City experience. I know Brenda was so happy to read this post. Thank you for your business and your kindness.

Negative experience: After looking at the reviews now I understand!! Today at about 1:45pm. I'm assuming it was an instructor because nobody else was in the car(a man with glasses and a long beard)decided to whip out in front of me on Lowell St. In Peabody, instead of waiting, maybe this isn't the best person to be teaching Children or even adults driving!!! If anything he should practice what he preaches to the people he is giving lessons to!! I have been driving for a real long time and let me tell you I have never seen a vehicle that said auto school on the roof of the car just decide to pull out in front of on coming traffic in all the years I've been driving!! I've seen auto school cars that just had the instructor in it sit and patiently waiting until they could proceed with caution but nope nope this auto school guy!! It's a shame that this auto school has someone like this representing this school!! I know everyone has bad days but your Supposed to leave it at home and not bring it to work!!! Unreal !!!
Hi Kerry
I am very surprised to read this considering this particular driver is very well respected by the owners and team at Tanner City. He is also one of our most requested instructors and one of our best teachers. I did follow up with him to get his perspective on this.
Peabody: Columbus St. Staged, signaling to entering Lowell St west bound. Lowell St traffic east and west bound moderate to heavy. Traveling approximately 15/20 mph. East bound trucker slows and flashes headlights at me indicating I can proceed. Visual check to the right reveals a three to four car length gap in the west bound lane traffic. Proceeded entering Lowell St westbound at speed appropriate for conditions. Enough to bridge the gap and maintain a safe space behind the car in front of me.
Mirror check indicate the car behind me to be approximately two to two and a half car lengths behind me. Released accelerator to taper thrust to bring vehicle in line with traffic “flow”. No braking necessary. Checked rear view mirror. Vehicle behind was approximately two to two and half car lengths behind. No horn was sounded. No lights were flashed.
Approaching the traffic light at Forest St traffic slowed. Seeking to to turn left, moved the vehicle into the turn lane. Waiting to turn, the blue vehicle I had pulled in front of, now passed me. An older female with an offended face was waving her hand at me and sounded her horn.
The number of years one has driven is not necessarily a barometer of skills acquired. Number of years driving is not reflective of hours, miles, or range of conditions driven in. When asked 90% drivers will say they are above average or excellent drivers. 95% of collisions are caused by human error. Human beings generally are quick to blame “the other guy” before considering any possible personal behavior and/or responsibility.
Human beings tend to look a short to very short distance ahead. Key 1 of the Smith System is Aim High Steering. This Key advises us to look at a greater distance. Fifteen to thirty seconds ahead. Minimum. This allows us to collect more information about our surroundings and predict possible changes in the traffic pattern ahead.
Human beings tend to stare. Key 3 of the Smith System tells as to Keep Your Eyes Moving. Every two seconds. This keeps our peripheral vision engaged and helps us obtain information about our surroundings. It also helps us keep our minds on the task at hand. The default position of the human mind is to wander.
While we are here, Key 2 is Get the Big Picture. Advising mirror checks every 5 to 8 seconds. This is to keep us aware of our every changing surroundings. 90% of our driving decisions are based on what we see.
I’m going to suggest my accuser was quite possibly staring at the back of the car she was following and most likely thinking of something other than the task at hand. Perhaps she was thinking of how annoying it was to be in slow moving traffic and largely unaware of her surroundings. I’ll also suggest, based on her statement, “ decided to whip out in front of me”, she thought I “came out of nowhere”. Nobody comes out of nowhere. They come from somewhere you aren’t looking.
Regarding the corporate brand. I’m acutely aware the vehicle I’m driving displays the corporate name. And my responsibility to appropriately represent the company. In my past life I taught this to chauffeur candidates and reinforced it to the chauffeur staff.
Negative experience: The people who work there are rude the times they give you are incorrect everything is late terribly run
Negative experience: Terribly uncoordinated. If you’re going to be an instructor, you need to be understanding that people are learning. Treating someone as if they are five and without a brain is cruel. Incase you are wondering, one of the instructors also believed that blind people can drive. Don’t waste your money.
Thank you for taking time to post a review. Did your student take a lesson with us? Our instructors do understand our students are learning. If you wish to talk further please call our office and let them know your name and number so one of the owners can get in touch. Thank you
Negative experience: My ex wife registered our kid to this school without seeing those reviews and another one Starr review is adding. The owner clearly scamming everybody. My kid has been registered over a year and not even half way with her classes. They do register new students and push backs all old ones so the owner can make money. Called a few times and the lady at the who answers the phone says “ you should call back often to get a scheduled class “ Well, we didn’t pay 800+ dollars so we can chase classes. We are planning to take legal actions against this scammers.
Negative experience: An L of a driving school
Negative experience: This establishment should be shut down. They continue to take advantage of zoom courses and have classes of 50+ students at a time. When your child completes that portion and tries to schedule a road lesson you are told there are none available. It’s currently October, we were told they have nothing available until January. We were told our options are to “call back everyday” and see if anything opens up. How can a company continue to have zoom classes at the capacity they do, yet respond to reviews left on here with “we’re trying to hire more instructors for road lessons” STOP taking families money knowing you do not have the staff to provide the road lessons. You take $800+ upfront and leave families hanging. I have never seen a more poorly run establishment that knowingly takes money without having the staff/manpower to uphold what is outlined in the package sold to families. Save your family the time and money and go elsewhere. No other established I contacted has the backlog this place does.
Negative experience: if i could put 1 star i would
I am sorry to hear that.
Negative experience: cant even get a road lesson for my son. DO NOT waste ur money at this place
Thank you for taking the time to post a review. I am not sure who your son is but I would like to make sure he has lessons booked and is on our cancel list. Thanks!
Negative experience: such a horrible unorganized driving school. takes about a month and a half to get just one road lesson. my daughter was supposed to get her license in October but hasnt even gotten a chance to complete all her road lessons because they either never respond or say theres no appointments. i don’t understand how they are still open if they have “no drivers” i spent so much money for nothing. theres not even an option to get a refund and transfer to a better well managed driving school
Thank you for taking the time to post a review. I am sorry to hear it's been difficult to get lessons. We do have 20+ drivers and give over 300 lessons per week. We are so busy I would like to hire many more - we are trying! We do respond to all messages. Also, you can transfer if that would work better for you although we would prefer to keep your business with Tanner City.
Negative experience: A disgrace of a driving school scheduling road lessons took very long to book the people in the office don’t know what they are doing getting my drivers license here was a roller coaster and they don’t teach you the things that are on the road test my dad paid about 800 bucks for all of this not worth it wish I went somewhere else
Negative experience: Worst driving school, poor services, rude people.
Negative experience: if i could give no stars, i would. this establishment services a very poor quality of communication. there is a lack of organization within and it makes difficult to complete what should be a very smooth process. getting my license has been one of the most stressful things i’ve had to do and i largely blame Tanner City. I would call their office for information about my delays and they would play hot potato with my call or send me in the wrong direction for information. i largely recommend to anyone looking for drivers ed, to go else where.
Fantastic experience: The staff at tanner city auto school are great the people at the office always return your calls in a timely manner, and are so helpful. the lessons are great and the road lesson instructors are extremely helpful and very professional, i took some lessons with north shore driving school, it was okay but the owner who brought me out wasn't the most professional and very condescending, but of course with good intentions. What i didn't like was when I took the road test through tanner city I personally felt that the road test examiner was grading a bit too hard and wasn't fair. know you cant pick and choose or refuse a road test examiner and that this person is just from the rmv not a staff at tanner city, but i genuinely feel like the examiner was unrealistic with her decision to fail me on the mistakes she considered to be worthy of failure. im taking my exam for the third time (hopefully ill pass) with tanner city after not having the best learning experience with north shore driving school in lynn for my second road test. best, cc
Negative experience: This is not the right place at all the workers rude and it’s 100 digress I think they need AC in the office so they can act normal maybe (Fix the place)
Thank you for taking the time for a review. Unfortunately you did not take any lessons with Tanner City Auto School or you may have had a better result. The person that you are referring to as rude does not work for Tanner City. We offer license testing as a convenience for all drivers. Good luck and be safe.
Negative experience: I had just finished my 12th lesson and a lady calls and says it was only my 11th. I say Ok and take one more lesson because it’s not a big deal. I then call back and try to schedule my road test and a new lady is on the phone saying I’ve only done 10 lessons... now I have to wait 2-3 more weeks to get my license thanks to Tanner City’s terrible organization skills. Only good thing I can say about Tanner city is that the driving instructors are friendly. People at the front desk on the other hand need to get their act together.
Fantastic experience: I have so far had a great experience with Tanner City, the ladies on the office on Washington Street are kind and very compassionate
Negative experience: This is the worst driving school I have ever seen. My sister went here and the teacher named “Mrs.Inneis” was yelling at the students. Very unprofessional on her half. Along with a student getting one answer wrong when she was reviewing the questions she had went crazy. I would not recommend anyone going here.
Positive experience: Tanner was an excellent experience in online classes and they gave me many road lessons. My only problem was the line at the road test. Everyone was instructed to come at 7:45 but if you're not there early, then you are going to end up taking your test at 10:00 because of the line.
Thank you so much for this great review. I am happy your classes and road lessons went well. I am sorry about the wait for your test. Our procedure since the pandemic hit is to have 3 students only at 15 minute intervals so I’m not sure why all the kids got there at 7:45. I will investigate this further so it does not happen moving forward. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Congratulations on passing your test!
Fantastic experience: I honestly can’t thank Tanner City Auto School for all that they did to get my kids on the road especially during a pandemic!! I have heard horror stories about driving schools & figured it would be awful during this time. Not at all! Brenda held my hand through the entire experience!!! My 20 yr old finally felt ready to get her license when my son turned 16. They did the online classes together. Then we booked all 12 of their road lessons together. All of the instructors were so great! The day that my daughter went for her road test someone was there & I felt as if he was just as excited for the kids to pass. It was a nice touch!!! My son goes in a few months for his road test & I’m hoping to have the experience for him :). Thank you to everyone at Tanner City Auto School!!
Thank you so much for all of your kind words. I really appreciate the time you took to write about Tanner City. We are thankful for your business and it is our pleasure to help our students get their licenses. Congratulations to your daughter! We will do our best to make sure your son has the same great experience.
Negative experience: I am not a student there, but I took a road test with them. The guy working at the desk was decent, which is why I gave them 1 star, but the guy who tested me was terrible. I regret that I didn’t ask his name to write down here. So inpatient, no greeting, no eye contact, no positive attitude and impression. From the moment I saw him, I could tell that he hated his life. First thing he asked me was if I took a lesson with them, which I didn’t. I heard the rumor that they would fail you the first time if you did not take lessons with them to get more money out of you. I guess that’s kind of true. (majority of people there had already failed at least once. I heard everyone talking about failing the test.) Anyways, I’m okay with my result. It is what it is. However, the thing I’m upset about the most is that I could not even understand what he said. He speaks super fast and mumbles when he gives directions. English is not my first language and that was not fair at all. He didn’t even give me a chance to ask what he said because he gave me so much attitude when I didn’t understand what he said and was not sure what to do next. Even if that careless examiner is not their direct employee, it is not okay to have someone like him on the property if they want a good reputation.
I’m sorry you failed and feel bad that you had a bad experience. The registry examiner is the person that you are referring to. He is not an employee of Tanner City Auto School but works for the Registry of Motor Vehicles. The auto school does not give the test, we just provide the test site, the car and sponsor which is required for you to take your license test. The person that registered you is a Tanner City Auto School employee so I’m glad that he was polite as that is what we expect from all our employees. Please feel free to contact the registry to express your concerns about the registry examiner or you can call our office and we can speak further. Thank you for coming to Tanner City and I hope you pass your next test.
Respectfully, Bob Bettencourt
Fantastic experience: sorted it out, non-issue, have a nice day
I’m sorry you didn’t have a good experience as we take pride in making our customers happy. I wish you had called and we could have discussed any issues. We match any competitors price but are already one of the lowest on the north shore. We have air conditioning at all our locations. The summer months are our busiest as a lot of kids like to take their lessons and classroom so our classes generally fill up. All of our locations can handle the amount of students that we have as we are only allowed so many per location. Please feel free to contact us as we are always looking to improve our services to make us the best driving school possible.
Thank you,
Bob Bettencourt

Fantastic experience: I can’t say enough about Tanner City Auto School. Very patient and pleasant staff, especially Brenda. So accommodating with my daughter’s busy schedule. Would highly recommend!
Thank you Sue for taking the time to write a review. We have hired several new drivers to compliment our great staff and now students can get more lessons done faster and at their requested times. Thanks again be safe.
Fantastic experience: very impressed with the customer service. Brenda has gone out of her way to accomadate my daughters busy school and sports schedule. When I called to cancel a road lesson do to a sports injury she was more concerned about my daughters well being than canceling the lesson. The vehicles are very clean and safe. The only bad thing is my daughter has become a little back seat driver telling my wife and I all the rules of the road.
Thank you Dave for taking the time to write a review. We have made customer service our number one priority and I'm glad you noticed it. I'm glad your daughter is passing on the safety tips that she learned. We hope that anyone that has had any issues will reach out to us so we can make things right. Thanks again, Bob Bettencourt
Fantastic experience: Great driving school, with nice new cars, and friendly instructors. Prices are also very reasonable.
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We have made a conscious effort to make things better and more friendly for our students. Good luck and be safe.
Fantastic experience: This school is excellent! The teachers are very knowledgeable and I would highly recommend it!
Thank you Erica for taking the time to write a review. We have hired several new drivers to compliment our great staff. This has also allowed us to get lessons done faster for our students. Thanks again and be safe. Bob Bettencourt
Negative experience: This place is probably the worst place to go to get your license. I try calling every hour on the dot to schedule my last road lesson and I get sent straight to voicemail, so I leave my name and number and no one calls me back. I’ve done this at least 8 times now in the past week. Don’t send your kids here it’s a waste of money.
Thank you Sophia for taking the time to write a review. I'm sorry for your bad experience but we have changed our management and we have made customer service our number one priority. Good luck with your new license and be safe.
Negative experience: The place is awfulllll...they are all over the place. They don't answer the phone they give you false information and after my son is "scheduled" for a road lesson they show up to pick him up and tell him they cant take him because the car is full with other students!!! But they want to charge me a $30 fee for a "no show" when it was their fault for over booking!!! AWFUL SERVICE!!!!!
Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I apologize for your poor experience but we have made changes to correct these issues. Our new ownership has made customer service our number one priority and look forward to our students and their parents seeing the difference. Good luck and be safe. Bob Bettencourt
Negative experience: This place sucks. Sponsors don't help it's just another way for them to take your money and they fail almost every single person.. not sure why they are still in business.
Thank you Taylor for taking time to write a review. Driving schools don't control who passes or fails as that is done by the registry. We try to make sure every student passes but unfortunately it happens. Our pass record is very high as we make every effort to make sure our drivers have the best training possible. Good luck and be safe. Bob Bettencourt
Negative experience: I have five children.... I will not make the mistake of using this company again.
Negative experience: This place sucks. Plain and simple. The reception desk isn't good at there job. The teachers only teach when they feel like it. Lessons take so long to schedule and they are a GIANT RIP OFF. They eat your money. They loose track of scheduling. They aren't good with payments. I would NOT recommend to anyone.
Negative experience: I don't recommend this school to anyone.
Negative experience: They take days-weeks to return your call when trying to schedule a road lesson.
Negative experience: Lessons are less than an hour and you don't learn anything.
