Negative experience: All CDL schools are a scam. If you can't find a carrier to train you for free, then it's a bad time to get into Trucking.

Instructors explain everything very well and Tanya and Tyler are always there to answer any questions that you may have. Fantastic experience: Where do I even begin I was so impressed with this school from start to walking in signing up and working with Tanya in the office to all the amazing instructors along the way. I met Katrina who is from another school and she was amazing she took her time to just explain everything about the school to me. Charlie was absolutely the best in the class room and training on the road. Ricci is so patient and took his time making sure I knew everything in the yard to be ready to go on the road. Tyler made my entire experience at the school so enjoyable and helping me with my first CDL job. I even go back to visit them in my spare time. If you are looking for an affordable school that you learn everything you need to learn to get your CDL I highly recommend Smith & Solomon DuPont Pa!!!

Negative experience: There is no good staff who can teach you the requirements you need to be on the road and who can learn to park. I do not recommend anyone come to this school to acquire their CDL. You know what the problem is in that school, it's one of the instructors named Charlie, you have a problem with him, the student still talks badly. Apart from that, he also lives sleeping in the truck and doesn't pay attention to what they do in the yard and a person who speaks badly about other students of other races.

Fantastic experience: From my first interaction with Heather, I knew I had found the right place to get my CDL Class A Driver's License and training. With access to late model manual and automatic transmission trucks provided by Werner, Smith and Solomon is a place where you have the opportunity to learn at your pace. With focus and hard work, you can get the experience necessary to have your license in a little over 4 weeks. But if you have trouble acquiring the knowledge or the skills, that's okay too, because Corey and the staff will ensure you put in the time required to be comfortable enough to take the driving and skills test. Right up until the day I was tested by Joey, who is an extremely fair testing professional who genuinely cares about the students' livelihood and safety, I was treated with respect and given access to so many years of knowledge across the staff. Tyler does a great job running a top notch business and easily the best driving school in the Scranton / Wilkes Barre area. I highly recommend Smith and Solomon to anyone looking to get into the trucking industry.

Positive experience: I'm hoping that this place got better over the years. I graduated here in 2015 and it was horrendous. I will give it 4 stars in hopes that it has changed because I see the newer model trucks and I see these guys are under new management.

Fantastic experience: I absolutely enjoyed my time at Smith & Solomon in Dupont PA. The staff here is awesome. I went in because I was starting my family business in the trucking industry and the staff were not only knowledgeable but incredibly supportive as well. Heather was so kind when I went to sign up. Mr.Teddy (one of the instructors) has 30 plus years in the trucking business and I felt very confident I would graduate in a timely manner with his help. Joey and Tyler were God sent. I remember feeling overwhelmed and anxious as I had never driven a Tractor-Trailor before but they made the experience very smooth. I am very grateful for this team at Smith and Solomon.

Negative experience: Worse school ever

Positive experience: My first contact with the school was throught Heather. She was very professional and friendly. I submitted the required information and filled out my application. I ran in to issues with the DMV and getting my learners permit. Heather was very patient and understanding. Once I was able to get my permit I started school the next day. I learned very quickly that your progress in the training is based on the effort that you put in. You are shown what the incab and pretrip inspections cover. First the first 2 weeks you practic your incab and pretrip inspections. It feels like an eturnity . Watching other students practic backing maneuvers and heading out to practice driving motivates you to push on. After getting proficient on the incab and pretrip inspections you help mentor the newer student. Once you are allowed to practice backing maneuver, at 2 weeks, your day starts with practicing your incab and pretrip. You move on to backing maneuvers. Two more weeks of incab, pretrip and backing maneuver then you get to start driving. Make the best of the time you are given on the road, the opportunities are limited. The instructors are knowledgeable but are some what hands off with training the students. You are provide the information, and equiptment, but you are required to self motivate to get the practice in. Motivated students can get through the program with in 180 to 200 hours. The school requires 160 hour of training prior to allowing you to take your road test. My experience at Smith and Solomon was good. Put forth the effort and consistently practice and you will succeed.

Fantastic experience: Great school. Learn at your own pace . Can work hard and get done quick or slow it down if not ready . All the students help each other . The instructors are not breathing down your neck but are willing to help with anything you ask . All the instructors are easy to get along . Teddy, Joey , Heather and Tyler were all great . Would recommend to anyone looking to get their CDL.

Fantastic experience: I haven't joined just yet my self but I have 3 buddies that went threw this and 1 cousin and they all got there CDL very fast and I'm planning on joining as well so from the 4 others I know they gave it 5 stars.

Negative experience: Not enough trainers for the amount of students. Plus it seems like if you aren't in one of the clicks nobody will practice with you which is a load of BS it shouldn't come down to whether or not you fit in with certain people to be able to practice

Positive experience: My name is Richard Guzman and I am a recent and proud graduate of the Smith & Solomon CDL Training School in DuPont PA. I would like to thank Victor and Ted who work the yard and have the responsibility of instructing the students in the In-Cab, Pre-Trip, Skills, and Driving the Tractor with Trailer. These two men although they are overwhelmed with anywhere between 25-35 students at a time, understaffed, and at times handicapped due to language barriers, do an exceptional job of managing and instructing the students in the program. They are always ready to answer any question posed to them and assist when needed. I would like give Victor a special recognition since he suffered a recent personal tragedy and still showed up to work with a smile on his face and ready to instruct without complaining. I would also like to thank Bill the Director of the program, classroom instructor, and examiner for his detailed instructions and support, also to Tyler an examiner who I have much respect for not only for his great mannerism, courteous, and professional demeanor but also his knowledge and driving skills with the Tractor’s and Trailer. To Heather who works in the office recruiting and managing our paperwork thank you for always being so caring, concerned, and assisting with questions and documents without hesitating. I also made some wonderful friends and memories that I will cherish the rest of my life. Thank you to the Smith & Solomon team for the great learning experience I will forever be greatful.

Positive experience: I would like to thanks Smith & Solomon school for helping me obtain my CDL Class A license. I will also like to thanks bill ,Tyler , Victor ,Ted, Heather and my classroom teammates. it was a new experience. it's a great School the only thing I wish for the school to be better is that they have more equipment and more trainers besides that it was an awesome experience.

Positive experience: I want to start off by saying thank you to all of the staff and my classmates at Smith and Solomon. I couldn't have asked for a better group of classmates to work towards achieving this goal with. The staff were all very informative and encouraging throughout the whole learning process. - My classmates, which were probably the most important part of this process were amazing. We all helped each other with tips and encouragement. We learned from each other's mistakes. - Heather in the office was awesome and very up-front about the program from the start. - Your first week you spend in the classroom. Bill teaches you everything you need to know to get you started and confidently pass your permit test. He was also always available at anytime to ask whatever questions you had throughout the whole process. - Victor and Ted were my instructors outside in the yard and on the road. I learned alot from them. They are very patient and as long as you listen and don't argue with them you will learn. They are here to help you. - Tyler administered my test. Once again, throughout the whole process he was more than willing to answer any questions and give advice and tips you may need. I want to also thank him for making my test a comfortable experience before and during. Now for the bad. I would've easily given a 5 start rating but there are a few draw backs..... - Not enough equipment for the amount of students - Not enough instructors for the amount of students - Not enough space to practice in. This location is at the Petro. The practice area is in the back of the truck parking lot and you shift in the yard with these trucks so there is a lot of traffic and trucks in the way. - Also, I wish more Representatives from trucking companies came to the school. I hope this helps anyone in their decision on what school to attend to obtain there CDL. I started 9/3/19 and graduated 10/15/19 with my CDL class A.

Positive experience: This is my review of Smith and Solomon CDL training school. I started Smith and Solomon September 3rd 2019 in Dupont. Heather in the office made this easy for me to get me started with everything she was very helpful.This is a good school to go to if you are looking to obtain your class A or B. you will learn everything you need to get yourself into your new career. First week you will be in the classroom learning everything you will need to get you ready for your permit. My first thought was no way I was going to pass this so much to take in. Bill was very knowledgeable and explained it very clearly so by the time your ready to take it you will pass no problem. I learned so much in that first week and was prepared for my permit. He will also answer any questions while you attend School and be straight up with you about everything. The next few weeks you will be learning your pre trip, skills, and shifting to get you ready for your test date. At this time you will be in the yard from here on out with the instructors. I definitely could not ask for a better group of guys in my class to be around these guys would motivate me to get better show me my mistakes if I forgot something and learn from them we would push each other. Ted one of the instructors taught and showed me in cab, engine compartment and the rest of the tractor and trailer for your pre/post trips. everything you'll need to make sure the truck is in proper working/safe order and the steps you'll take daily out there after school. We also learned how to straight back the truck up 100 feet in a coned out box, and parallel park tractor and trailer into a box. Tell ya what at times it gets frustrating when your not doing so good but these trainers will show you if you listen. Victor is another instructor he taught me how to double clutch shift gears and downshift correctly driving in the yard. At first again something I didn't think I was gonna pick up and thought screw it! Ill just do it on the automatic truck and have the restriction. Victor kept me trying and soon I was shocked that i was able to pick it up to get me out on the road to practice these skills. I give it up to these guys for having the patience to teach us this stuff. Staff is 5 stars all day they are great personable helpful people Thanks to Tyler another instructor he had information on a good local company when I was talking to him about what it is id like to do after completion of school. Ended up being where I would be going. This place makes you feel like they give a shi# not just a in and out type of school they will work with you and have a lot of knowledge to share. Now the bad. This training school is out of a Petro gas station and has a lot of traffic around you while you learning these skills. My opinion this school can be great if given the right tools to do so. 1.More space clearly not enough the students pay good money and deserve better. That's really the biggest problem with this CDL school not enough space your in the back of the parking lot with minimal space and high traffic. 2. More trainers they are great but seems understaffed the student to trainer ratio. If they had more trainers more can be done with the little bit of time you have to better utilize your hours. My overall experience was good here and I will be forever grateful. I would recommend going here staff makes you feel comfortable and will show you the needed steps to succeed. Fantastic experience: Trainers are very knowledgeable, if you show them that you put your all into achieving your goals they will be more then happy to aid you in your new career by giving you tips and leads to employment. With any type of schooling the more you put in to it the more you will get out. So if your going to come to this school be humble and say to yourself “I’m hear to learn, and accept that you NO NOTHING!” even if had trucking experience or watched videos on YouTube. You will be your own worst enemy on trying to achieve your goal. That kind of confidence is called ignorance; which then the blame will be on yourself for your own failure because you just simply didn’t listen & learn to what the instructors were teaching what to do and how to do it. So ask questions when you have them and be proactive on practicing, your experience there will be a good knowledgeable one if you do just that. Thank you again, Trainers on all your knowledge.

Fantastic experience: Informed and helpful people in the office and classroom, great trainers who will help you reach your goal. Best training program to attend to get your CDL A license with classroom training so you are also prepared to pass the DOT tests for tanker, doubles/triples and haz endorsements. Fantastic experience: Started school on March 12 and had my CDL on April 20th. Overall, I had a blast there. Great instructors who are easy going and laid back willing to help you anyway they can. The students helped out a lot to. Felt like a second family. Thanks for everyone’s help and having the confidence in me when I wasn’t confident in myself. Great school, great people. I’m going to miss you guys but I’m happy to begin my new journey in life.

This truly a blessing, because all my life I wanted to learn how to drive a tractor and trailer(Rig). And as of today May 1st that dream is a reality. Thanks to Ruben, Taylor, Clyde and Cyndi. Fantastic experience: Excellent instructors, and very attentive to students who need extra help with skills regardless of the student to instructor ratio. Newer equipment (2016 Freightliner) that just arrived mid way through my time there. Since it’s in a truck stop there are many amenities to use before, during lunch break, and after school if needed. My only advice to new students is come with your permit, they do reimburse you, but it’s very helpful to get out in yard for skills a whole week ahead of the rest of your class. Secondly, the instructors are unable to do one on one skills every single day with any given student (which is understandable), you will be doing skills in the yard without an instructor in the truck (they will supervise you from the yard) after you are shown/taught a specific skill. So be prepared to hone your skills by yourself, if you are struggling they will help you if you ask but don’t expect one on one time every single day, it’s near impossible because of the high demand in the industry and the amount of students enrolling. Other than that, I had a very awesome experience and would definitely recommend this school!

Fantastic experience: About the Smith and Solomon CDL school in DuPont PA. Short story: good school, good value, only adults need apply. ;-) Longer story: Like every business, these guys (and gal) do a lot with a little. The DuPont location is a division of the larger Smith and Solomon group, based in Bordentown, NJ. The DuPont, PA group had four Freightliners, and a few other vehicles requiring CDL, such as a bus. The equipment is in reasonably good condition, and given the abuse some of the students hurl at the equipment, it's in shockingly good condition. They are certainly functional and safe. Though day-to-day training experience is seemingly laid-back, the instructors tell/show you what you need to know to get your CDL-A (and other endorsements) and then some. Either in/on the lot or classroom, or out on the road. Just pay attention, listen, ask. Sure, when class sizes are large, you have to wait a short while for your turn, but there are always opportunities to practice shifting, yard maneuvers, and of course the vehicle inspections. Road time is in high demand, and you get more than enough to get your CDL-A. But if you're slow, or like me had bad habits from driving a stick in the 4-wheeler, you can take a weekend or two and have a really high instructor-to-student ratio. Ever hear the saying "The fate of the world is determined by those who show up"? Well, those who leave early in the day leave the rest of us with a truck to ourselves. Yee-haw! As I mentioned earlier, if you can't keep track of your progress........you're just not responsible enough to be entrusted with a truck. So, make a plan for yourself, go over it with an instructor, and let them know you're serious. Check your progress every few days. If you're ahead, great. Everybody seems to have skills they 'get'. And everyone seems to have skills they need extra work on. Schedule time if you're not reaching your goals dummy! It's on YOU to be sure you're ready on test day, and Smith and Solomon DuPont certainly have the equipment, hours of operation and a variety of good instructors to make it happen for you! The actual variety in teaching styles of the instructors was an asset. All are very knowledgeable former drivers, but being able to work with a variety of styles almost guarantees a fit. So yes, the instructors are good, and flexible in scheduling and teaching styles. They watch what you're doing and tell you how to correct problems, but they expect to be dealing with adults who listen and try their best to put the instructors advice into action, and practice it. If there is any fault with Smith and Solomon, it's with some of the students. I would not mind having a $5 bill for every hour a gaggle of students stood around BS-ing when there was a truck available to practice fundamentals. What I mean is: it's just plain sad when a student thinks they are 'special' to demand one-on-one road time when in reality they can't find the gears, or haven't worked on clutch-throttle-shifter coordination, let alone basics like yard skills. And there was one other bonus, at least with my graduating class.......we all took an interest in getting each other through the pre-trip, and yard skills. There is a lot to be said for using teamwork, and the Smith and Solomon DuPont style does inject the essential knowledge and somehow the group reinforces that knowledge and you turn it into skill. In conclusion: great experience, I left with my CDL-A, and feel very comfortable managing a rig, and the price here is very low compared to other schools. For what you needed, a solid CDL-A, it's a great value and was a great experience.
