Fantastic experience: The instructors at the academy were friendly and helpful. I was able to take the time I needed to learn on my own, and when I needed assistance, they were informative and happy to demonstrate for me what I needed to help me understand.

Fantastic experience: Matt was awesome! He gave me good information and was patient with me. Michael was always available and informative. Tyler, David and JT were great driving instructors. I can’t forget Jeff, encyclopedia for truckers. Jeff was always sweet and funny and had an answer every time! Appreciate the instructors!

Negative experience: This is the worst school to go to for information over the phone. If you’re looking at moving to the area and need assistance getting your CDL go to Elite Trucking school.

Hello Nathan, Our call center that handles the scheduling does not have all the information for each branch. This is why they set appointments, for future students to meet with the appropriate people within 160 Driving Academy, to get the information they seek.

Fantastic experience: This is a school first and foremost, if you think they are gonna let brand new students drive new trucks and destroy clutches and transmissions trying to learn how to drive then you have a fairytale idea of how a school operates. Second stop being stubborn and risking failure just to get your manual. Automatics are where trucking is going. If you can figure out the manual fine but don't make the mistake that just because you can drive a manual car that it translates to a truck cause it doesn't and all those bad habits you have will make it that much harder. These guys get you to get your license period. They give you the pre-trip and aside from showing us how to do it and how to perform the air brakes, you need to practice and memorize it. You can't expect for them to memorize it for you and if you can't memorize a two-sided sheet of paper then you can't expect to pass this test. They show you the skills and work with you on performing the skills to what the state tests you at but you need to practice those as well. There is no one size fits all cheat code to backing it's a skill you grow. If your struggling ask for help. They can't read your mind and they cant be everywhere at once. What I had the most fun doing was skills in week 3. Michael told us that no back is ever the same. So he had each of us get in the truck and screw up the 90 and had the next person fix it. It made us more prepared for our test and it was a lot of fun messing up the starting position for the next student. When it comes to driving that is where you will get the most in depth instruction. Michael drove me on manual trucks and taught me everything I needed to know to pass my test first time. He didn't get frustrated and broke it down to a very basic way of explaining what the truck required to shift smoothly. This kept me and the other guys calm and confident behind the wheel. These guys do everything they can to help you pass all you have to do is put in the effort and don't expect them to perform a miracle and not have to do any work yourself. As far as waiting for drive time I waited patiently for my turn to get going on the road and perfected my pre-trip and backing so when I went on the road that was my only focus. I was able to absorb everything and was shifting that truck at the end of my 160 hours almost as good as Michael did when he took me out for my first drive. Use your time wisely if all your gonna do is complain and want someone to hold your hand the whole time then don't waste your time. This isn't the career for you. Thanks to all the 160 Portland instructors for what you guys do.

Negative experience: Went here to get my CDL. The classroom experience was awesome easy to learn from and classroom instructors include you and inspire you to learn. I got my learners permit. The yard instructors (the main one is my cousin) are lazy and unwilling to teach. They sit around the yard smoking all day talking about their trucking stories. (But they test you on things you haven't learned because the never taught you) Trucks constantly broken down. Many students waiting to drive a lot of time wasted listening to stories. School took my $5000.00 UPFRONT. All the yard instructors do is test you not teach you. THEY SET YOU UP TO FAIL!!!! Sub standard training and lots of tests. Many students learning from students. NOT teachers. STAY AWAY from 160 driving academy in PORTLAND OR. ANY school is better! I know I am a former student from here. STAY AWAY THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY AND TEACH YOU NOTHING!

Fantastic experience: I'm a recent graduate and I learned a ton from all the instructors. They were all great in their own ways and brought different life/career knowledge to their teachings. If you want to get your CDL and become a truck driver YOU have to put in the work, listen and follow directions, and practice. That is something no one else can do for you. There is also a high volume of students cycling in and out of here, so if you are struggling to learn something you need to speak up for yourself and ask for help.

Positive experience: Great experience with this school. First I'll start with Ed's zoom class. This was my first class I've ever took online. Ed was great! He was very informative and most of all never hesitated to answer a single question. In the yard the instructors were good. Laid back and really get you prepared to pass the test. If you're not a go getter or need your hand held this might not be for you. Only two complaints. Need more drive time and need better equipment. The truck I drove was horrible. The seat left such a bruise on my back I contemplated suing this place. That's nobody's fault but corporate. They need to do better. But thanks 160 for getting me to where I wanted to be.

Fantastic experience: Michael was an amazing instructor and very knowledgeable, laid back and helped with any question I had definitely would recommend this school because of him. Matt was extremely helpful over the road, really puts you through the obstacle course but really helps build your confidence behind the wheel. I enjoyed every time I got behind the wheel with him as my instructor! Overall great school, definitely have to ask questions and be proactive, no hand holding which I liked. I passed my first time back in July!

James Park 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: I got my CDL-A August 2023. The course and Instructors are knowledgeable and will tech you everything you need to know, Automatic or Manual transmission. If you don't already know how to do something ie- backing with a trailer, identifying parts for pretrip, shifting, and turning a long vehicle with trailer, Don't be afraid to ask for help. Take this course to learn the basics and obtain your CDL, not master driving a truck. There will be more students than trucks, so don't expect to do nothing but drive the whole time. When you're not practicing driving/backing you should study the pretrip. Pass the test, One-and-done! I did, so can you! Note about Drugs and Alcohol. Know what you're getting yourself into... Marijuana is not Federaly legal. You should already know before going for a CDL you need to be able to PEE CLEAN. Dont throw away your money. Maybe test yourself at home before registering and paying for the school... don't sit in a "hotbox" with your buddies. Google a DOT drug screen and see what they look for with a CDL and the consequences of peeing dirty while attempting to get your CDL or already having one, It's not good.

Robert Chatfield 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: Its been 3 years since I got my CDL here, back when it was IITR. Great school, great trainers, and a skill that will give you peace of mind in that you'll never worry about money ever again. These guys are the masters.

Fantastic experience: If you really want to have your license... here they will help you and they will be completely honest with you the instructors make you feel confident that you will be able to do it depending on your skills... but keep in mind that most of the work it's up to you... it's a good experience if you listen to the instructions and make an effort... even with my deference to the language they knew how to help me and get my license. (Best instructors matt and michael)

Fantastic experience: Great school, Matt, is the go too Instructor to any questions you have. Matt made me feel confident behind the wheel and thought me alot about being a trucker.

Christian Holien 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: This is an exceptional school! The instructors care deeply about you and they want to see you succeed! Michael, Matt and Jeff are great instructors and have years of experience and knowledge that they are more than happy to pass on. They just want to see you succeed. They will do everything in their power to get you to pass the tests except take them for you. Do not go into this thinking it’s going to be easy. The instructors can’t hand you the answers they can guide you and instruct you on what you’re doing wrong, but in the end it is up to you as an individual to take the information in and apply it. It’s not easy, but it is 100% doable! Pay attention and listen and you’ll be just fine. One and done club 2023!

Negative experience: The instructors were good. The rest of the program is in need of serious overhaul. 4 week program pushed out to 5 weeks without warning. (Time is money) Absolutely no direction given while training in the yard. Over booked with too many students at one time, left no open spaces in trucks to practice. Doesn’t help that they provide derelict trucks and equipment. At one point there were only 3 trucks for about 25-30 students. Tuition does not cover all of your needs to obtain a cdl and they don’t tell you, until you ask for reimbursement for your unexpected out of pocket expenses. Washington drivers beware! I would recommend going anywhere but here to learn.

Negative experience: Worst and most unprofessional school to attend for trucking. None of the instructors are profession I was stuck there for 4 months almost and didn’t get a test date when the program is only supposed to be a month long. Super unprofessional school. I have never seen a business ran so poorly!!!!!! Go elsewhere

John C 2 years ago

Fantastic experience: My first time out on the road with Matt was more useful and educational than the first week of on yard operation and pretrip learning. Finding an instructor that gives a damn about the success of the students was truly a blessing.

David Ames 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: After not driving for 20 years and having to go back to school I was amazed at how much I learned. There’s been a lot of new laws enacted and a lot of new protections for the driver that I was unaware of. The staff were great and I got my license on the first attempt and it was definitely worth the money. This is by far a way better school than I went to 30 years ago. My best suggestion is if you go latch on to another student and practice with each other as much as you can on your pre-trip. Thanks again for all your help.

Negative experience: Been waiting and have yet received a reimbursement, every time I call its busy. I paid for my class in full, as well as my CDL permit test, CDL permit license as well as my CDL license, I was not informed they cover it therfore I did. They stated they will write me a check for reimbursement, I have not received a call or anything regarding this and it was not cheap either especially when you were unemployed during the school process. Other than paying for my test and license which was supposed to be covered in the $4900, the class was ok, no instructors in the truck to help unless you messed up that bad, Jason was awesome, Matt was cool to drive with and Leah was also great to drive with. Neither of the 3 made you feel stupid and seemed like they actually cared. Only would give 5 stars for them.

Negative experience: Not responsive at all. Left message. Was told someone would call back and no does. Just tried to call again 1:09 pm on Wed July 14th and got strange voicemail box to leave message. Not sure would go to a school that is so lack luster in communicating. Good thing more school options available.

Negative experience: If I could give them a Negative 5 I would. This company is overbooked with students and did not give me the information to succeed. I was told to go take a DOT physical and UA. Without making it known that I could.test positive for marijuana 6 weeks after using it they gave me a positive UA then put it on a record called the Clearinghouse which records all DOT violations. I do not even have a CDL permit and was totally unaware this would happen. I called Elite Truck school and spoke with Tyler who said at their school they go over all this with you in depth in the classroom before going to take a UA.

Fantastic experience: I just took this course through IITR and was very pleased with the tools and skills I gained while attending school here. We received ample time to get prepared for our pre trip inspection, backing skills, and road exam. I was considering taking the state test without attending school but I am very glad I did. I would not have passed the state test without the skills and practice I received at IITR (I passed my state test the first try). I would highly recommend the school to anyone wishing to obtain their CDL. The instructors were great and I had a good time while attending. Money well spent!

Fantastic experience: I graduated from IITR about 9 months ago and started driving for Sygma Network shortly after that. I payed my own way through school. I just want to let those that want to get their CDL and are looking for schools to know that this a great school. They taught me everything I needed to know and gave me the tools I needed to succeed. Honestly, I don't know their gratuation rate, but I can say for certain that all of the people who have failed this program did not have their heart in it. I had several friends and heard the stories of others in my class and it all comes back to one thing: As long as you are willing to dedicate and fully apply yourself for 1 month of your life to studying for the CDL state test, there is no reason why anyone can't complete this course. The instructors will always be there to help and train you. The rest is up to you. In all, I enjoyed my time at IITR and am glad I went with them to get my CDL. I have easily made enough money with my new job to gain back all the money I invested i myself at IITR and look forward to a stable future. Thank you to everyone at IITT Truck School!!

Fantastic experience: I learned how to drive a manual at this school. My first day of driving, I was scared, nervous, I remember stalling over 2 dozen times. By the last day of driving I was excited to drive and didn't stall once. The instructors were kind and patient with me. I got my CDL here and forever grateful. I recommend this school. The only big advice I have for future students is to really memorize the pre-trip inspection. A lot of people fail it for very simple things. Missing one thing from 'air leak' checks is automatic failure. Forgetting to mention cleanliness on exterior lights is a 6 point deduction, around half the amount required to be disqualified. Good luck because the DMV is strict, i passed by 1 point :).

Negative experience: The owner of this place is super unprofessional and may I add racist as well. No desire to help someone who's second language is English. My father was going to classes here and yes he struggled, instead of encouraging his efforts, he was put in the bottom pit, I got to speak with the owner myself and noticed his sarcasm and pittyful arguments against my father. Horrible owner, horrible place! No desire to even attain a class taught by such a disrespectful person!

160 Driving Academy of Portland

We take great pride in helping people from all walks of life attend, graduate, and gain employment through our program. Because of this, I find this comment to be extremely offensive by the daughter of our student who I personally spoke to today. If English is a second language for a possible student and they don't have a high school diploma in English, the state requires our prospective students to take and pass an admissions exam to make sure they understand English well enough to pass our course. Otherwise, we would have their money and they may flunk and to me, that's not fair. The student in question is funded by a federal grant called Trade Act and we spoke to his counselor and let him know he took the exam, and only got 16 questions correct out of 40; far from passing. We let him attend anyhow to see how he did in class at the request of his counselor. Unfortunately, he did horrible and the entire class was aware of this. He simply does not understand English well enough. He also failed the state exam 3 times this go around and 5 times the last time and out of 6 state tests, he passed none of them. Now I ask you, as a school owner should I have just kept his $4,700 and ignored it? I believe I need to be honest and let him know it's just not for him until he takes some English classes. I spoke to his counselor today and he said the following: "Hello Dave, Thank you for the information. I will need to talk to my supervisor about this and get some direction. Have you talked with XXXXXXX about not allowing him to continue? I was aware that he tried to take your course 10 years ago or so, but he said he did not complete because he had a family emergency. I was not aware that it was because he did not understand the material. We appreciate that you reached out to us and let us know your concern this early in to his training". I closing, maybe he should have chosen a diploma mill that only cares about the money and not the student instead of our accredited institution. Never was I sarcastic, only honest and I wish her father would have been able to pass. It's frustrating to get this kind of comment when we did the right thing. Dave…

Cody, thank you for the kind words and we try very hard to lead in this industry and we hear often from our grads that the students they met that attended other truck schools were way less prepared. Take care and be safe out there. Dave...
