Our comment from DrivingSchools.Directory about Century Driving School:
Century Driving School aims to provide quality driving instruction with a mix of experiences shared by past students. Many users commend various instructors for their patience, understanding, and ability to create a comfortable learning environment. Notably, instructors like Dave and Hector have received praise for their supportive teaching styles and for helping students overcome anxiety, while Tricia has been highlighted for making the classroom experience engaging and enjoyable.
However, there are recurring concerns about aspects of the road test procedures and some instructors' attitudes. Several users expressed feeling that the school may prioritize profits, citing experiences where they felt the testing process was unfair or unprofessional, leading to unnecessary failures and additional fees. Complaints also mention a lack of effective communication and difficulties with scheduling appointments.
Overall, while many recommend Century Driving School for its instructors' dedication to student success, prospective customers should be aware of potential inconsistencies in experience.
Century Driving School: Reviews
Negative experience: This place is a scam. They will find any reason to fail your kid and take your money. I knew of 4 kids that went on the same day and all failed.when they went to official driving school they passed no problem. So save your money and don't go to century. Very rude to deal with and very sketchy people....
Positive experience: Todd Gorsuch is a great driving instructor who always made me feel comfortable, even when I was nervous or made mistakes. He is attentive, patient, and clear, and gave me the confidence I needed to become a safer and more capable driver. He always provided constructive feedback in a supportive way. On the other hand, Dana Saunders was incredibly hostile to me from the start of the drive until the end. She was constantly insulting me, sighing at me, and not providing clear instructions. Safe to say I was shocked at the lack of professionalism from her.
Fantastic experience: Dave was an awesome and amazing instructor! Thank u guys for the help! My journey is just beginning.
Negative experience: Do not schedule road test here. I do not recommend!
Negative experience: Had a lady who was rude and racist. Not professional at all.
Positive experience: Dave M. was a great examiner and truly cares about placing good drivers on the road. He was calm and his advice was super helpful. Can't say the same for Jim or Mark lol
Positive experience: If you're taking the final driving test. You have to wait for the instructor to sign paperwork. That part makes No cents. The paperwork should always be available in the building. Other then that they are ok. Not the cheepst.
Fantastic experience: To clarify, we send all paperwork prior to testing via links included with correspondence. This occurs twice during the process of pre-test communication.
Negative experience: Finding places to learn how to parallel park is very scarce and to have a place that has the cones but won’t let drivers practice doesn’t make sense. Tried to go and there was no one testing there but was told to leave.
Negative experience: Its a requirement to pass the parking, before driving on the road, but they dont leave the cones out for inexperience drivers to practice on. Its a joke if people cant practice and they are charging 80 dollars per-test. I wouldnt come to this place go somewhere else if you student isnt good at parking.
Fantastic experience: You learn to appreciate how long it's been since you had a Lucerne after losing to ouil3rd 16 years ago. Jim was my instructor and he was very nice and comfortable to ride with!
Negative experience: We scheduled a private driving lesson for parking practice so our daughter can take her road test. Our driving instructor forgot it was for parking and didn't get it done so we had to schedule another appointment. Just got a message today asking for a second payment for an error he made, through no fault of our own. We're not pleased. We'll never use this company again.
Negative experience: they purposely fail you so they can take your money, please avoid this place, I was failed for going through a yellow light. even though it was unsafe to slam on the brakes that close. me and my mom both saw it was yellow, the instructor said it was red. it wasn't. makes sense why their cars are so nice because they make twice the profit because they fail you the first time on purpose. would give a 0 star if I could. never do century for your road test.
Fantastic experience: Good place for 1-on-1 lessons and the road test. I got my license here recently. If you do take the 1-on-1 lessons, I highly recommend Hector. He was very kind and helpful. Also recommend Dave Meeuwsen for the road test. I've heard not so great things about other staff on the reviews here. Can't say for sure since I haven't really seen any of them besides the 2 mentioned here.
Fantastic experience: Very kind, Mr. Dave, very good service
Fantastic experience: I am taking driving lessons here and Hector is so awesome. He's so understanding, polite, and a great teacher .I started with him from zero and I was just practicing with him. He's really helpful and patient. I would like to thank him and thank the century driving school of holland to have a driving tutor such as Mr Hector. I didn't pass my test yet but I recommend of him.
Fantastic experience: My daughter just completed her first segment with the office in Holland. Unfortunately, her last week of class she had to have an emergency dental procedure done. She had to miss the last 3 class. I will have to say, the ladies in the office were so understanding. Helped rearrange classes and drives for my daughter. My daughter really likes her instructors. From the classroom to driving. I would highly recommend this driving school.
Negative experience: My daughter went here for her "road test." The first thing they tested was parallel parking using parking cones, which is a world of difference to actual parallel parking on the road. My daughter said the tester was not the nicest person. She failed the parallel parking and they immediately brought her back. The tester said they couldn't take her on the road because she didn't pass parallel parking. I don't know about others, but my wife has been driving for 35+ years and couldn't parallel park if you put a loaded gun to her head. How are we to know what else she needs to work on if the won't actually take her on the road? Isn't it called a ROAD TEST? I didn't know the majority of 50hrs pactice driving was to have been spent on parallel parking. I thought the majority of that 50 hrs should be spent on the actual road, actually interacting with other drivers. The last thing the tester said to my daughter, with a smirk on his face, was "Well, TRY to have a nice day."
Negative experience: rude office ladies and too long classes
Fantastic experience: Dave was absolutely fantastic! He was so awesome extremely nice and down to earth. He has the perfect personality for his job way to go Dave thanks for making our experience simple and easy no stress. We were hoping not to have a drill Sargent making the drive uncomfortable but Dave was so good working with nervous driver. Thanks again Dave thanks for the great service you provided.
Fantastic experience: Thanks to the efforts of my driving instructor, Tricia Averill, who was very calm and patient with me, not only was I able to pass the driving test, I am now a more confident driver. The experience was very helpful, and I am glad to have gone through it.
Fantastic experience: It is a great place to get your driving right. The instructors are easygoing and patient. I passed my driving road test, thanks to Tricia and Mark, my driving instructors.
Negative experience: Class lasted super long and at the end of each class they threatned to hit us if we didn't leave a 5 star review. I am leaving this 1 star because I don't like being hit and think they should ban "Century Driving School". Lastly, I was eating a grape in the class and the instructor took it from me and threw it at a kid and made him go blind.
Negative experience: The drivers trainer grabbed me to steer me back into my lane even though I new what i was doing since I have haphephobia i steered us off the road and broke my wrist. as an icecream vendor i can no longer support my family so we have now been put up for adoption.
Negative experience: Was very boring, but Hector cluthced up for the squad
Negative experience: Scheduling = difficult! I didn't realize spots for driving and observing would fill up so fast. As soon as you are able to schedule, get on it. It took my neighbor and I over 45 minutes to schedule our 2 girls, attempting to align so that we could carpool. Arrival = startling. It was pitch dark in February and neither the exterior lights nor the interior lights in the hallway were on. Teaching = subpar from the sounds of it. Road instruction = abysmal. Judy doesn't seem to know how to teach driving, only how to keep the kids on the road and following every rule. She repeatedly took the wheel and turned the vehicle, even when no one was in danger, including parallel parking completely for my daughter. She still has no idea how to do it! Judy also used the instructor brake for the tiniest things, like being 1-2 miles over the speed limit, instead of coaching verbally and allowing the kids to learn. Doing something FOR a child is about the worst way to help them learn! Ron and Mike were much, much better and taught the girls a lot. We had to make one change to a driving/class day, and it took multiple phone calls and emails. There has to be a better way in this day and age to reschedule something. Overall, I'm thoroughly unimpressed and frustrated with our experience at Century Driving. I would not recommend it. (But if you are stuck here, be sure to schedule your drives early and avoid Judy if you can.)
Negative experience: One of their driver instructors (thankfully only the instructor was in the car) failed to stop (while driving a century driving car) at a stop sign almost hitting my car. Thankfully I have quick reflexes and was able to maneuver my car before she hit my passenger side where two of my children were sitting. This was also done in a school zone during school zone hours. I tried to call and repot this but “surprise” no one will return my call. If I was you I would not trust these people to teach my children the proper way to drive especially when they themselves cannot follow the laws! I can only imagine how they are when a teen is in the car.
Fantastic experience: I was nervous about passing my drivers test so I took 2 hours of instruction through Century. Thank you to Tricia and Dave for helping me pass!
Fantastic experience: El instructor dave es muy paciente, te hace sentir seguro confiado. Y el trata con las personas que habla español Y eso es super bueno
Fantastic experience: Michael Roskamp is an amazing instructor. I had the best experience driving with him, he made me feel comfortable and confident. I wasn’t afraid to make a mistake while driving because he was correcting me over and over again and I passed my test. I am very thankful to have had an instructor like him.
Fantastic experience: I just wanted to come on here and boost about the instructor that i had. Dave meeuwsen was my instructor and i have to say that he is the absolute best!! He was so patient and kind to me! During the test he made casual conversation and kept it very lighthearted! He helped me tremendously with my anxiety during the test! If you’re reading this dave thank you so much for being an amazing instructor
Fantastic experience: I truly wish I could rate more but I am giving 5 stars for Dave my instructor. He was very nice, patient , and very informative. He was a fantastic instructor. Because of him I now have my license. Thank you. Also thank you to the ladies inside and Dave who gave the road test. You all have been great.
Fantastic experience: I really enjoyed taking my test here. The instructor was really nice, and it was an enjoyable experience. I had to test twice, and the instructor was really helpful both times with good feedback.
Positive experience: Just had my son Finish first session and he really enjoyed the experience. Not a huge fan of location but they taught two generations of my family now and do a great job!
Negative experience: If you are transgender or part of the lgbtq+ community do not go here. My driving instructor would not stop misgendering me and even went as far as to insult me. He gave me nothing constructive and was overall just a pathetic human being. I confronted him and he denied that what he was doing was misgendering and he would call me whatever it said on my ID strongly implying that I am not the woman that I am. It made me break down and was absolutely a nightmare scenario. My instructor was Dave Meeuwsen and while its possible the other instructors aren't loathsome individuals I cannot in good conscience recommend a place that keeps someone like this in their roster.
Fantastic experience: Very knowledgeable and helpful.
Fantastic experience: We had an excellent experience with Century Driving school! Kind and experienced instructors. Excellent communication from the office! Phyllis was so helpful and always so kind when I had a question or needed help! Will definitely go here for my other kids!
Negative experience: Taking the road test is 75 dollars a pop. This can be prohibitively expensive and quickly adds up. So if your poor like me, you better make sure you know what you are doing. If you fail at the parking cones, they will make you go back to the office immediately. They won't even take you for a test drive to just see how your doing and tell you whats wrong. Soo Bye Bye 75 dollars. Christ, the lessons are expensive. Buts its the closet office to the my home, since my dad works 3rd shift. I don't know the prices of other driving test offices, since they are far away. Edit: 1/7/2024: My god the road test is basically 80 dollars a pop. This is incredibly outrageous, if you find a different company than this one.
Fantastic experience: Dave meeuwsen was awesome, I failed the first time but passed the second, he made me feel comfortable and calm both times, highly recommend him.
Fantastic experience: David was an excellent person to me. He helped me in so many ways.
Fantastic experience: Tricia made it fun.
Fantastic experience: Tricia was an excellent teacher and made 24 hours in a classroom way more fun that it sounds. Great place!
Negative experience: Move an appointment three times without informing me. They also charged for all three appointments and never refunded.
Fantastic experience: Great place to learn how to drive and take the State of Michigan’s road test for auto and CDL
Fantastic experience: Kim was an excellent instructor, and fun to drive around with! Really knew how to make the most of each driving session and did not waste time. Really cares about you on a personal level and wants you to be the best on the road. Thought I was ready when I thought I wasn't. Very flexible with timing! Even scheduled a time the afternoon before my test just so everything was really fresh for me. Will really miss my driving sessions with her!!
Fantastic experience: I just had my drivers test with Dave Meeuwsen and had a great experience. I think that this was a great place to have done my drivers test.
Fantastic experience: My instructor Kim Gallup is a very good teacher. She is calm and attentive, and knows how to make you feel comfortable behind the wheel even if you are very new and nervous! She tries to answer all your doubts diligently, and gives you a detailed positive feedback at the end of every driving session so that you can make a note of what needs improvement. She is very professional, always present ahead of time and uses the time of the session very efficiently to help you practice what you planned for. The driving school is usually very busy and booked out, so you need to plan sessions way in advance. But otherwise, the service is good. I would recommend it.
Negative experience: Website great, instructor great. Customer service and follow through was poor. Took the test in April after the test I was told I was all set and would receive my endorsement in the mail. After three+ months I had not received anything. No license, no email, nothing. I reached out to Century and their response was the SOS change their processes and that I was not "all set" as told. At no time was I communicated that there was any problem. At this point I instructed to go into the SOS in person to resolve. So after so investigation , I went online to find out I could complete the process myself. Salt in the wound is one month after I completed the test, two freind tested and the process worked as originally communicated to me..... hmmmmm For a company that does this for a living and knows more than anyone how this process is to work. Did not handle the change well. At all.
Negative experience: Be nice if their business actually answers phone calls
Fantastic experience: Earlier today I had went and took my driving test here. It was the best experience I could have asked for, Dave is awesome. I definitely recommend this place!
Fantastic experience: I feel confident about my son learn about be safe driving ...thank you
Negative experience: Do not recommend the instructor katherine Lynn she was very rude and condescending to my sister on the road test dont waste your money
Fantastic experience: Took my driving skills test here with Dave and it was a wonderful experience. He was very friendly but professional, patient, and clear in his communication. He immediately put me at ease as I started my test, and gave clear, concise instructions. I would definitely recommend taking a test here with him.
Fantastic experience: My daughter was on her 4th driving test and we were so nervous that she was going to get an instructor that made her feel super nervous. Fortunately, we were able to get Dave Meeuwsen who is by far the best instructor I have ever witnessed. He had a smile that instantly made us feel at ease. His tone was calming and had just a joyous personality. If I would recommend anyone it would be him, especially if your child does not do well under pressure. I have two more kids that will eventually need to take this test and I hope that Dave sticks around until then.
Fantastic experience: Kim was very professional and informative. She was an excellent instructor who carefully observed my weaknesses and elaborated on how i can improve. I learned so much, thank you.
Fantastic experience: Excellent, I highly recommend this place, I started with zero experience and some time later they told me that driving by my side was like being with another person haha, Kim made me have a lot of confidence in myself, if you need to take classes, I recommend her 100%!
Fantastic experience: Really enjoyed having classes at Holland Century Driving.
Fantastic experience: All four of my kids have taken driver's training and their road test with Century. I would highly recommend them. They have thorough instruction in the classroom and on the road. The instructors were very helpful and friendly.
Fantastic experience: Questions were answered and scheduling was handled easily. Worked with our schedules and expectations for driving and classroom attendance was clearly communicated. Office staff and driving instructors were friendly and pleasant.
Fantastic experience: Great classes and teachers!
Fantastic experience: We have had several of our children complete their driver's training at Century Driving and we have been satisfied every time. All of the instructors have been great both in the classroom and on the road. The roads will never be completely safe, but we feel our children have been well prepared by Century Driving.
Fantastic experience: While I did not pass my test let alone leave the parking lot, that was due to me not practicing enough and nerves being too high. I am unsure of the gentleman’s name who was my instructor but he was very kind and professional. And while I was crying from disappointment in myself he was very professional but comforting. If the tests weren’t so booked out I would 100% go through them again and will recommend them to anyone who needs their test done. Thank you for the experience
Fantastic experience: Got the job done
Negative experience: The are set on taking your regardless if its there fault
Fantastic experience: I had my test with Paul Wegmeyer after being without a license for 22 years and he was very nice and explained everything he wanted me to do.I couldn't have asked for a nicer instructor.
Negative experience: Rude instructor. Failed my son because he didn’t know what the instructor meant when he said “do a back blindside reverse now”. (He meant parallel park.) Also kept telling my son to keep moving back even though he was touching the cones. Then failed him for hitting the cones. Didn’t even get to the driving portion of the test. Waste of money.
Fantastic experience: Just had my test today with bob. Century provided an amazing service bob was nice and helpful. I was nervous after reading some of these reviews but Century has changed my test was fast and I passed first try. This is a great company to go through to test and I recommend it. My advice is to practice your parking at the Secretary of State range and you will be fine.
Fantastic experience: Took my driver's test here. It was quick and I was treated with respect. And I got my license too! C:
Negative experience: Very rude Instructor didn’t even get to the driving part of they test failed me on parallel parking after he told me to keep readjusting after I was in the cones fine and already done just so I would lose points they scam you and fail you just so you’ll have to come back and pay more money don’t go here!
Negative experience: Terrible. The teachers were disinterested at best. The office lady is less than helpful and concerned only with when they would be paid. Additionally, they wanted to charge me $25 for a replacement certificate? Unreal.
Fantastic experience: I had an amazing experience at Century. I was extremely nervous to drive, but all the instructors were very kind and really helped me overcome my fear. The classroom instructor was exceptionally knowledgeable and you could tell he really cared about making everyone safe and confident drivers. I would definitely recommend Century Driving School to any new driver.
Negative experience: I agree with the most recent written review. I feel like they fail everyone the first time to take our money. My daughter disliked it here. She took it for segment one and two. For the segment two test, Kim Gallop told my daughter, "I was scared for you when I was grading." As in thinking my daughter wouldn't pass. I recommend taking Macatawa over Century. Worst experience for my daughter, and instructors are rude.
Negative experience: Rude people. They lost my son's permit and lied to me about giving them my registration and insurance. It was never asked for by me or my son.
Negative experience: Segment 1 and 2 went well. I think they fail everyone the first time on their drivers test as a money grab. Everyone that I have spoken to had their kids fail at least once with this place. My kid did very well with no checks, but went north instead of south on the highway. This intersection is tricky for an adult to figure out as the highway signs are both together at the north on ramp and both on ramps are on the same side. They called it disregarding instructor instructions and instantly failed my kid. I asked if they ever turned down the wrong street and had to turn around in a driveway to go back the other way. They weren't fond of that! I will be using another company with my younger child. Their phones are another issue for sure. Good luck at calling and actually getting ahold of someone!
Fantastic experience: Excellent instructor, Super friendly, Cool, Calm, and Collective!
Positive experience: So far our experience has been good. My son seems to like the teachers and is doing well in class. The only complaint I have, is when I try to call the office, it takes forever to get someone on the phone. After being on hold (and being told repeated by the voice message that I am first in line) you have the option to leave a voice message for someone to call you back. This is frustrating when you work full time and cannot always get to the phone when they do call you back. It would be nice to call and be able to speak to a person from the start. For this reason along, I give 3 stars. Communication is important, and I like calling a company and being greeted by a human on the other end of the phone.
Positive experience: I think the instructors are phenomenal, but the website and the ability to sign kids up is atrocious as a foster parent. It would be so amazing to have one family account and just add kiddos as they come into our home, but NOPE..far more difficult than that. I was trying to help a former foster kiddo set up a driving test and tried everything under the sun and nothing seemed to work; it really shouldn't be that complicated. Again, all kids have raved about the instructors, but the website needs a serious makeover, especially for families like mine.
Negative experience: Wow. Lady at the counter was way too into taking money asap and telling me if I had an emergency that I couldntcomake it then my money would be for fit and could not get it back, and I'd have to pay againg to reschedule. Total scam
Negative experience: Do not use this school . Every one my son knows failed their first test. They must do it to get you too spend another $50 for another test. They took points off for my son not turning his head while going through a green light and asked him to make a left hand turn but cars were already lined up in the turning lane so he pulled in behind the last car and they marked him down for crossing the yellow line. How do you get in the turning lane if they are backed up past the white turn area? We are going to a different school for his next test.
Fantastic experience: Had an excellent experience here. When scheduling my test; Kim was awesome. I took my motorcycle skills test today and Tom was great! The service here was very friendly, they explained everything clearly and were very helpful. Thank you!
Negative experience: Do not go here to have a student driver take their driving test. Instructors are incompetent and cannot tell if your brake lights come on. A complete waste of money.
Negative experience: Would not reccomend this place to get your license. Instructers are very rude and unless you do perfect on your driving test they will not pass you. Not going to go here again. Failed me because of one simple mistake that couldve easily been put down as a couple points instead of a complete failure.
Fantastic experience: I don't normally give reviews, but feel I need to here because they are all negative. Just because your child fails their drivers test doesn't mean this place is bad! So far 3 of my kids have taken their road tests here, and we have had zero trouble! 3 different instructors and zero trouble! They were all 3 very good with feedback after the drives! We will be taking our 4th kid here when he is ready too!
Negative experience: Having issues scheduling road test due to web site malfunctions. I have been trying for the last 3 days.
Negative experience: Very rude and uptight.
Fantastic experience: I recently took my road test with Century, they were very friendly and professional. Happy I chose them to take my test.
Negative experience: Had my daughter take the test with an older white male. Was rude to my daughter and me
Negative experience: Scam Alert. Took my baby sister to get her driver license, from the get go we were treating rudely. My sister and I get there early so she can practice her parallel parking she did awesome when we did it. The instructor showwed up late and moved the cones, right away told my sister to parallel park she couldn't do it he said you failed try again later and there is no refund. Her test literally took 5 minutes. A week later we went and took the test else where she passed and now has her liscense. I do not recommend this place to anyone. I only gave 1 star because no star is not an option.
Negative experience: Daughter was treated rudely and so was I. Made her so nervous.....also never moved cones for the child to parallel park, basically setting her up for failure and claimed cones were moved and I watched and cones were never moved. So retaking it again and another $50....i would of never got my licence under these circumstances, feel bad for the kiddos who's jobs count on this.
Positive experience: Good alternative to school system drivers education
Fantastic experience: very impressed had an 18 year old take just the driving test, very professional, good feedback. have a 16 year-old finishing drivers training and they have been so easy to work with despite a challenging schedule on our behalf. Professionalism from the start. thank you for such a good experience.
Negative experience: I just recently went and got my license through century. I was with this elderly larger man who not only stressed my out throughout the test but made me stop as I had the right away on the highway. I guess I'll take it because getting my license has been an uphill battle but this man was down right rotten from the get go.
Negative experience: It would appear they are more concerned about making money than encouraging new drivers who did not take their course. Some young people actually wait and learn by driving with family and friends to save a few bucks but when they take a Road Test without paying for their instruction from this school there is zero encouragement and zero human interaction. I wonder if it was because my daughter was there with her fiance who just happens to be female also, hmmmm, maybe some intolerance was involved.
Negative experience: So uh, turned right on a "no turn on red" which turning onto a one way IS LEGAL. followed the test guy out, he cuts someone off, and crosses over 2 lanes ILLEGALLY.
