Many students have highlighted the expertise and dedication of the instructors, including notable mentions like Smitty, Wayne, and Rachel, who have been described as patient and knowledgeable. While the school has faced criticism for equipment issues and scheduling challenges, students who put in the effort typically see positive outcomes, with several passing their DMV tests on the first attempt.
**Key Highlights:**
- Experienced Instructors: Many reviews praise the staff for their commitment to student success and their ability to provide personalized instruction.
- Focused Learning Environment: Most students agree that the success of their training is largely dependent on their own dedication and willingness to learn.
- Successful Outcomes: A number of graduates report passing their tests and securing jobs soon after completing their training.
**Areas for Improvement:**
- Students frequently mention that equipment is often outdated, which can affect training quality.
- Some graduates felt that class sizes were too large, limiting individual driving time and practice.

Despite the critiques, many students appreciate the efforts of the instructors and the learning opportunities provided, making Shippers' Choice a recommended option for those ready to commit to their CDL training.
Shippers' Choice - CDL Training School: Reviews
Fantastic experience: You get out of it what you put into it. Yes the organization has a few challenges and equipment goes in and down. The experience was adequate enough to learn and train. I passed the all 3 sections of the test on the first attempt. This was a reflection on their efforts and mine.
Negative experience: I came in to the office ask a direct question, what was the price of the CDL classes? , they would not tell me a price. However one of my shipmates came in and to discuss the price and the seem very interested and over charging his VA . Military stay away from this place and go to Thomas Nelson or one of the other schools in the area were they have upfront pricing . They seem more interested in taking advantage of Military.
Fantastic experience: Great place to go to get your class a cdl! My class was really big. But the instructors pulled through and made sure everyone got enough seat time. This school only works if you work it. Dexter, Rachel and John were truly amazing instructors!
Positive experience: I’ll give this place 3 stars and let me explain. There are good instructors there like Todd being the best to me because he gives it to you like it’s gonna be on test day. John is cool for the range but riding with him in the truck is nerve racking and he will make you mad with his way of teaching. Lorenzo is cool and will have you understanding what you are doing, He also is a super trucker that knows it all lol. Kristen is also good and teaches you the right way. As far as the equipment… Every truck is old and all manual and they each drive different so keep that in mind when you doing maneuvers, road time as well as TEST DAY. Depending on your class size, you will not get many chances to drive or maneuver the truck so take every chance you get serious. You are practicing on their range which is in the back on dirt(not asphalt). The place is very unorganized so understand that and you will see. They have practice days for students who already graduated and waiting to test out, they will put them into your class and take some of you alls time as there are only 3 working truckings for however many in the class. Other than that you will learn and remember to take everyday serious. Study your pretrip and incab EVERYDAY! Last but NOT LEAST, Your last day in class they will ask everybody for their permits and D.O.T. Card and have you sign your signature on their iPad BUT its only showing the signature bar….. Ask to read what you are signing because without reading what it is, you think it is some graduation info and IT IS NOT. It’s you signing saying that you don’t need further testing and that shippers choice is not forcing you to take the test. It was weird how they presented it like that and basically saying they are done with you and you can’t do nothing about it even if you are not ready to test out. Your whole class will be happy its their last day and you get caught up thinking you’re signing some type of grad papers(wrong). I felt manipulated when I saw what i actually signed so be careful and read what you’re signing. It must be some type of law where you can get your money back if you feel you were slighted and ain’t have enough time in the truck range/road wise because they try to get you to sign that without reading it. Good luck
Negative experience: Do not recommend it,
Negative experience: Not beautiful experience here
Negative experience: I really appreciate the instructors hard-working and efforts, but at the same time I have some complaints regarding the practice time, some got more practice time than the others that’s why the students that get less practice time they tend to fail on the test day. Some students after failing the first time they get scheduled for the next week, but some were scheduled for the next month. This school is not treating everyone equally, and they are discriminating between students.
Fantastic experience: Muy buena escuela gracias a todos los intructores en especial a lorenzo, todd y Kristen se los recomiendo muy profesionales gracias por todo su empeño en enseñar
Fantastic experience: Great instructors, shout out to Todd, Kirsten, John, and of course my man Lorenzo. They were all patient and actually cared. They have tons of experience. The facility is a little run-down, but if you put in the time and effort, you will get a CDL.
Negative experience: I signed up, paid the amount, then a week later some personal things came up and I couldn't attend the class and canceled that week. I tried to get my money back for 3 months and when they finally sent me a check it was for $800 less than what I paid. I called and they weren't about to help me out. Nothing but a bunch of theives in my book
Fantastic experience: super efficient
Fantastic experience: Looking forward to obtaining my cdl class b for the city of Newport news stormwater div
Negative experience: I attended this school and contacted them about a refresher course and they were super rude and disrespectful i do not advise anyone to attend the school in Newport News Virginia they are lying to people to get their business, i had already talked to DMV and they already told me what I needed and they told me so I could not take their refresher course and told me go somewhere else super rude
Fantastic experience: I was at shippers choice for 10 weekends, it was kind of hard, 19students in one class with one teacher Mr Lorenzo but he stood up he makes sure we get as much practice as possible all 19 of us finish that class perfect and ready only waiting on our exam date with dmv, Mr Lorenzo he’s the real g
Negative experience: The worse place to attend, unprofessional, staff is rude, place and class is unorganized. This place is behind testing out scheduling and you don’t get the practice you need.
Negative experience: Wanted to look into CDL school , I thought this would be a decent place — NO. Definitely looking else where!
Negative experience: Rude! Just rude! I wouldn't attend this school even if it was free! I will pay 2 thousand more to have better customer service than this!
Negative experience: Mr Mullen is very unprofessional and I don’t suggest that you go to Suffolk school instead
Negative experience: Shipper’s choice was a terrible experience for me the instructor quit the first day of class leaving the school with no other choice but to use someone who had never taught not to mention he was not DMV qualified. Secondly I was only able to drive on the road twice not enough behind the wheel time to prepare anyone for the actual test, Third after completing the 4 week course I was told I would be allowed to practice on the weekends to prepare for the DMV test but the school never had any available slots now I’m fighting a garnishment because of this terrible experience. I advise anyone seeking to obtain a Cdl to look elsewhere and save yourself the headache of dealing with this school and I didn’t even go into the terrible equipment that they used for training just not a good school please stay away!!!
Negative experience: School is a total rip-off. They had 2 trucks with 40 students all trying to learn driving. Then have students that already graduated coming back to practice before test. Be like 60 people waiting in line to practice driving when that happens.
Fantastic experience: Smitty, Wayne, and Rachel are fantastic instructors. Even though I’ve never touched a clutch before, they’ve made everything easy for me to understand.
Fantastic experience: This school is great I’m honest man. I don’t know about teachers they had before but I’m enrolled in school right now an Smitty Wayne an Rachel are the truth they love their job an it shows in their patience they have with us. They won’t let you give up when you down they form like voltrons an collectively get you where you need to be Rachel is great with pre-trip an her style of teaching easy to grasp, Wayne break it all the way down to smallest point an walk you up I’m talking meet you where you at an get where you need to be lady but not least Smitty great at what he does natural this his gift please take his 2% an put it with yr 98. Listen these teachers these three I seen with all nationalities they have heart of gold don’t get me wrong what energy you put out you will receive but if you want knowledge if you want protect yourself an others if you wanna be a professional driver you need RWS Rachel Wayne Smitty I can’t thank you all enough man from the heart y’all family to me now thank you.
Fantastic experience: Instructors are extremely knowledgeable! Wayne one of the CDL instructors really takes him time to explain everything, answer questions no matter how redundant, great choice
Negative experience: If it wasn't for Wayne and smithy this school would be closed. It's a lack of order and professionalism.. we do not get enough time on the trucks practicing out backing maneuvers. With over flow of previous classes who graduated But is still testing.Smitty and Wayne are great teachers and I wouldn't have made it where I am now without them..but the school need more trucks and instructors .
Negative experience: Shout out to smitty and Wayne they are patient and know what they are doing probably wouldn’t made it this far with out them but this school differently need improvement it seems like a lot of people don’t pass their test so a lot of them come in to practice when it’s time to do range and the people that actually in the class don’t get enough drive time it’s all about repartition and we are not getting enough of it !!
Negative experience: Do your own research before you go here. They only have manual (stick shift). Majority truck companies are automatic. Booklet says $50 to transfer from class A to B is a lie. You would have to retake that course in Suffolk.
Fantastic experience: I have thought about this review for a long time. Before I started training to get my CDL, I read many reviews here. I've read the reviews on the website. I went through months of training to get my CDL and I can surely say this is a good school. I wanted to give this place 4 stars, but there are some terrible reviews on here that aren't justified. Huge shoutout to Rachel, she was a huge help. The instructors here will not hold your hand it is up to you to succeed. If you have the time and effort to dedicate to a certification like this, this is a good place to attain it. This school is one of the only in the world left that teaches full manual truck driving, which in the US is one of the most difficult things to test for. Considering how affordable this school is, this is actually an amazing service. I can't emphasize enough how much you will have to do research outside of school and really learn this if you want to be successful. It seems like 10% of my classmates did not pass and I can almost guarantee every one of them failed to apply themselves. If you're patient and good at tests this is the place for you. If not, perhaps a different certification is in order. Also, a word of wisdom: Get your learners before even thinking about attending any school like this.
Positive experience: First off, shout out to smitty , wayne and John. These instructors showed me how to control that truck. I learn something from all the instructors. On the real though, you have to really apply yourself if you want to get that Cdl. If you not hungry and putting in that work on your own you gone struggle. They gone give u the knowledge it’s up to you to apply it. The school do need to do better, they Jam Pack those weekend classes and it’s hard to get adequate truck time. They need better organization up in there for real.
Negative experience: Was interested, after reading the review responses whoever is in charge of that is very very VERY unprofessional
Fantastic experience: Started and completed during covid. DMV delayed everything during that time. I enjoyed the classroom and field training. Instructors ask that you're off of your phone and pay attention (easy). Instructors are great too. Recruiter needs improvement.
Fantastic experience: Been busy have not had a chance to get on here. I just wanted people to know went through this course as a CDL A driver which I needed for my company these guys were great Mike the Instructor and Charles the examiner we're Great.. Don't believe negative reviews..
Negative experience: Please by god don’t go to this school here a clue more students then trucks stay far away plz and it took me 1 week to notice what was going on go to tcc or other school p.s don’t sign contract with any company this will use you so bad find local companies and stay local and get your own truck don’t let anyone tell you it’s hard
Negative experience: very messy would not recommend
Fantastic experience: My name is Jamar and I just finished my class this past Friday and I can honestly say that despite all the negative reviews, the issue normally lies with students who don't apply themselves, they're not going to treat you like a toddler , either you want it or you don't. The resources are there and they have lots of experienced instructors who are patient. The director Rob was very respectful and a good listener anytime I had a question Update: I passed my dmv exam and have been gainfully employed driving otr for several months now,
Negative experience: Ripoff school, only cares about money.
Negative experience: I have a family member who attended this training class. I would suggest you not spend your money with them. They are nasty and rude and have Zero respect for the students. Keep your money and find somewhere else to spend your money!
Negative experience: This company is a rip off only 3out 20 in each class get Cdl's do ur research
Negative experience: This is the worst school to go to don’t sign up and waste your time it trucks are never working the Instructors don’t care to teach you and they can’t keep no instructors for this course they need to shunt the whole operation done because they can’t I am a student that attends this school will not tell anyone about this school and going to keep going up the chain of command cause my course was paid in full and I didn’t get what I needed why I was in class and now that I need practice I still can’t get it will be taking Further action with this school
Negative experience: There isn’t enough space on here for me to begin to describe the waste of time and how shady this “training” school is. Trucks never work instructors don’t show up and the Director Ed thinks just bc he is the head of the place that he’s God. He holds nobody accountable there for the MANY lies and confusion that goes on in there. I graduated in January and they only let me drive the truck 4 time. It’s now November. Stay FAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRR away
Negative experience: I would not recommend this school. CDL school is to give a person the basic skills to pass the road test. You will get that here if your focus on that and only that. Do not allow the extras to get in your way. I attended the Newport News school in 2020. There safety measures are questionable. They harp on students standing next to the cones. They said this was due to covid procedures. As a prior instructor of driver training in the military. I would never put my students in potential harms way. Some people come to the school with very little driving experience. So having students stand by a cone and knowing a student driver is backing towards them is hazardous. Secondly Ed has an issue with talking disrespectful to students and trainers. During the summer when it's so hot out side there is no water on the range. So my suggestion bring enough water. They are not organized at all. They would put a student on the calendar and tell them thay will be coming in to drive knowing they don't have enough instructors to facilitate that. Then when asked instead of being honest and say so they will lie and say someone called in. Been there long enough to count all instructors and knew the only instructor that wasn't there was on his day off. Ask them why lie and they said they are told to.They can't keep instructors on payroll. They are always quitting. I even witness Ed firing a instructor and then drove up to Rob who was talking to me at the time. Ed in his vehicle was like you take over I just fired him. Unless it was an unsafe act I would of called him into the office. Not do that in front of a class. Matt and Rachel tend to be short with student and can come off rude.
Negative experience: Rude on the phone
We are sorry you feel this way. Is there anything I can help you with?
Negative experience: Had a appointment at 9:00 on 7/10 Mr Mullen never showed up but I kept getting emails of a reminder stated to be there at 9 o’clock not professional at all
Our apologies for the inconvenience we caused. All he had to do was click the reschedule button on the reminder. He was bumped off his flight and was in mid air the time of that appointment. Again no excuse and we are sorry for what inconvenience this has caused you.
Negative experience: Do not attend this school! I attended this school for 1 month and only received my class A learners. Graduated in Dec. 16th 2020 with no certificate or nothing.... It is now, April of 2021 and still no certificate or call from school.. It really is a inconvenience! I actually left my job of 7 years to start a career in truck driving and got taken for my money! I actually paid $3,999.00 out of my pocket! Not a grant! Out of my whole class, I don’t thing anyone received there certificate or Class A license within that month!
Trionn- Sorry you are having trouble. You should go to the school administrator if you had issues. However we do not have a student in our newport news location named Tironn Taylor
Negative experience: Read Contract before you sign it not a good school
Taylor- sorry to hear you are not satisfied. However I do not see you as a student ever attending our school. This does not appear to be a real review and just a seo tactic other competitors try us. Most likely we will not get an respond to this because this is a fake review.
Fantastic experience: Recommend coming here for schooling they were fair and had some good instructors also recommend TMC for employment. Don’t gripe and complain just learn get your cdl and move on.
Thank you Joseph and good luck with TMC
Positive experience: Okay, so - here’s my thing: the school is actually very convenient, especially during this pandemic. Their structure was devised to benefit the student. I started December 4, 2020 and finished January 20, 2021 with a two week holiday break in between those two dates. The information is there, the resources were limited and a tad bit scarce because of the size of the class, but as an adult and an individual with a goal it falls on you to take advantage of every opportunity to learn. And that is exactly what I did. Every time something needed to be done whether it was backing, moving a truck to a designated spot, et cetera - I jumped at the opportunity. Even after I graduated, Ed allowed me to come into class as much as I wanted to ensure that I was comfortable as possible for my Feb. 3, 2021 CDL test date. I passed and I now have my CDL and I started working for a company already. The instructors (Anthony, Rob, Terry, John, and Mike) are amazing and essential. They will literally share with you everything they possibly can all in an effort to help you succeed and excel. Every story, every situation will be different, but it’s up to YOU to make the best of it. Rachel is a sweetheart although she can be quite assertive and borderline aggressive, but what do you expect from the only female in a male dominated establishment? She is also quite proficient in her job duties - she carries the program. Ed is one hell of a guy, he will do EVERYTHING he can to assist you on your CDL journey. Matthew isn’t egregiously bad; however, I had some issues with his lack of transparency and clarity when he tries to recruit people to the school. This is one of the reasons I couldn’t give five stars. *If you are not ready to drive an 80,000 pound vehicle, they are not going to throw you to the wolves. People get upset because they are there longer than the month they thought they were going to be there for, but that’s just simply because they aren’t ready. Everyone learns at their own pace, and I don’t know about you but I don’t want a 80,000 pound truck next to me, my family, or loved ones if they don’t know what they are doing. Furthermore, if they keep you there - it’s benefitting you, not them. It actually costs them A LOT to keep a student there past the 28 days. Think about it. Lastly, the trucks do break down a lot - but they are promptly sent to a repair shop. The trucks are older and are constantly abused because students are learning on them, but from a business perspective it makes no sense to buy new or newer equipment just for it to be torn up. So, I get it. Unfortunately, when the trucks go into the shop it puts a strain on the course and curriculum because the resources become limited. Overall, I recommend the course if you’re going into it with your head screwed on you know exactly what you want and are willing to put in the work to obtain it.
Negative experience: I just spoke with Matthew and it was THE WORST customer service experience I have had in a while. He was very rude and nasty. He refused to give me general information without me making an appointment with him and he refused to allow me to speak to management! Someone will get my business but it will NEVER be this location!!!!
Sorry you felt that Matthew did not give you good customer service. But that is our policy we do not give out information to someone requesting information over the phone. We do this because most of the time it is dirty tatics our competitors use so they can complain like this online.
Negative experience: Do not go to this school these are the most unprofessional people and instructors I have ever seen!!! They do not keep up with current rules and regulations from the DMV. They do not take the government mandate with mask seriously, no one keeps there mask on! Every time you call there office THEY ARE SUPER RUDE!!! If you pay your hard working money you deserve to be treated right! They do have one AMAZING PERSON HER NAME IS RACHEL They need more people like her!
Sorry you have had a bad experience but we do not have a student named michael tisby. If you are having issues please see the school director of admissions. He will be able to handle your issue.
Fantastic experience: I like this school, they are willing to work with me, the instructors that I had were awesome
Negative experience: called to get information an mathew answer the phone a really rude guy, hang up on me and told me to call another school just because i didin't want to give my phone number all i wanted was info. I called back i told him im making a complaint with the veterans affairs he told me do what you want. They treat veterans like this because there are only 2 schools around here that accepts the va gi-bill. If they treat people that call for info like this i dont even want to imagine how they are with you when you are a student. Answering your reply to my review. I did introduced my self with my name and if you reviewed my conversation with Mathews you can see that he asked me for my address, email and date of birth which i didin’t feel confortable in giving all that information to a person i don’t know. Before lying to make the school look good make sure you are telling the truth. He was really nasty on the phone and even told me to find another school that take va gi bill.
Coco0711- Sorry you have experienced any difficulty. After reviewing the call recording from your conversation with Matthew. We found that we are not able to answer questions without your cooperation. You clearly did not want to cooperate with Matthew and Matthew just followed company policy. If you would like I can schedule another call but our policy does not change. We don't give out information without knowing who we are talking with. As competition seems to call then go to google to complain about issues like this. All he asked you for was YOUR Name and Phone Number. Since you did not want to give your name and contact information we as a company will not give out any information just because you request.
Negative experience: This school is all about money they are con all about money don't take time with student to the owner and staff go to hell
Fake Review- Melvin sorry you feel this way. We have helped and changed thousand of lives through the 25 years of training. We currently do not have a Melvin Johnson that has attended Shippers Choice. But then again just look at the name. Melvin very common name, Johnson well even more common. Fake reviews come from competitors because everyone goes to Shippers Choice and when you visit the competition you will understand why everyone attends Shippers Choice training locations
Fantastic experience: Amazing awesome customer service and my mentor really inspired me and seeing the truck gave me more inspiration
Negative experience: This place sucks
Fantastic experience: Great school and learning environment. Excellent teachers and staff. I would definitely recommend anyone whose trying to get their CDL license to attend this school. U get out of it what u put in it. I tested and passed with the help of the instructor’s in under 2 months!! Thank you shippers choice!!!
Positive experience: I really enjoyed my experience I got from the school . They will work you if you want to learn. Starts with the recruiting Nelson was my recruiter walked me through the course he a great person to talk to. Their trainers are really good I tip my hat to them cause you have to have patience working there I commend y’all and thank you. I was a 1and done because of all the trainers
Fantastic experience: They tell you in the beginning of class, "You get in what you put in"! You can't go in this class with the mentality of frustration, if you get frustrated real quick then this isn't for you. If you have the determination to not quit and you LOVE a challenge, this class is where you want to be. If you are down for whatever then this is for you. I guarantee one thing!! This will change you whole life around but you have to stay the course.
Fantastic experience: As with any training anywhere their are things that are good and bad. If you are doing this thinking it's a cakewalk, your wrong. I took what I was given and got my CDL. I appreciate Shippers Choice for all they did for me. It's not the instructors responsibility if you fail. If you give 100% then you will succeed.
Positive experience: This review will be very honest & blunt. This school is not for those seeking a free ride to a cdl or looking for hands to be held. 1. Like any other buisness nothing is perfect, I agree you get what you put out. I was class of May 21st 2019 many things went wrong as far as structure, trucks breaking down from day to day abuse. The instructors gave effort to correct the problem. The school was constantly trying to improve and find a more effective way of operating. Many employers came for recruiting getting a job wont be a problem. Dont be lazy. Dont treat this as a social club. The tools are there for succes if you want them. The process cant stop at school go home and study go out and find a truck to pretrip on. The DMV test is not easy at all ! But if your well prepared it will make it that much easier to pass. I didnt do it alone teamed up with a couple of my classmates on my own time to make this happen. 1st try and i pass my test and got my CDL class A . if you took a loan make sure you get that tuition reimbursement from whatever company your going to work for. Good luck to all this is just the begining God bless.
Fantastic experience: Great school! 3rd party testors!. Recommend you have permit as soon as possible
Fantastic experience: The school is great ..The teachers are great! Les, Helena, mack, are great!!! They really take there time and explain all material needed to obtian your CDL.Mike another teacher is a father figure who has many funny stories about truck life.Mike has "The father stern look" cause he cares and a great teacher. Get him a ham sandwitch !!youll understand when your in class lol..
Thank you for sharing your experience. We are always here for you, hope you stay in touch and share your new job experience after one year. Don't forget to apply for tuition reimbursement with your new employer. Stay safe and alert on the road.
Fantastic experience: This is a great school excellent instrutors excellent staff. This school gets a lot of undeserved bad compliments. These bad reviews obviously come from those who expect the school to get your cdl for you. That is not the case and neither will any other school out there. If you come in and do the work take advantage of ever opportunity they present to you and put in 100% effort they will back you 110%. You get out what your willing to put in and then some. I went in worked hard, they saw that and helped me any way they could. I passed my dmv test first time with ease. Again if your expecting a easy way to get a cdl it isnt out there no matter where you go. If you are willing to put in the time and work that it takes. go to shippers choice. They are a excellent choice. I honestly wish i had to do it all over again. It was that fun. Thanks again to shippers choice. You changed my life! Class of 4-1-2019/4-26-2019.
Keith- Glad to hear you have taken advantage of our program. Having a positive attitude really helps you with success. We are here for you if you ever need class refresher courses or job placement. Don't forget to apply for tuition reimbursement with your new employer. If you do not have a loan they will still reimburse you for the money you might have had to pay. Good luck, Thank you very much. Stay alert and safe out on the road
Negative experience: I waited a long time to post about this place. I attended in 2016. I went into this with my all. This school is terrible for someone who has never been in a truck before. You have 2 instructors on the yard, 2-3 trucks going at a time, and 20-25 students spending 10 min at a time in the truck. I struggled with the back up. Once I got it, it was another persons go and when I came back to it, so much time had passed that I had forgotten it. Road time? That consisted of 15 mins on the road 2 times total during the class. I was not even close to prepared for the dmv test and had all intentions of going anyway but my mother passed a day before. They make you pay for your dmv schedule( $150 dollars) I would have had to pay again for a reschedule but wasn't ready. So I went back for a few more "sessions" of practice. Once again, 20-25 ppl fighting to get in trucks! I brought my concerns to ed, the guy who runs the school who called me a "liar". He also said I wasn't "cut out to drive a truck." Crazy thing is; I went to another school, been driving, a truck now for 2.5 yrs. No tickets, no accidents. I'm not crazy. I'm not a childish liar either. JUST READ HOW THIS GUT RESPONDS TO NEGATIVE POSTS.....LOOK A LITTLE LIKE A 5 YR OLD?! IMAGINE BRINGING YOUR CONCERNS TO HIM OR HAVING HIM OVERSEE SOMEONE TEACHING YOU HOW TO DRIVE A DEALY WEAPON....I REST MY CASE.
Fantastic experience: Just graduated Shippers Choice one of the greatest experiences of my life, the instructors were great!!! Thank You Mike, Helena, Les, Mack and Nick...1 and done March C/O 2019...
Adrian- Thanks for sharing your experience with Shippers Choice. If you ever need any refresher course it will always be available to you. Don't forget to apply for tuition reimbursement from your new employer as most companies have this available. Good Luck!!
Positive experience: Newport News shippers choice, it is a good school but just like everything in life if you want something come prepared, do your homework and you get what you put into it. I knew nothing about trucking and finished my class and passed my DMV test first time. The pre-trip inspection was tough and it was exactly what the DMV was looking for. Get out there and put in the work the rest is up to you.
You are correct- it's what you make of it determines your success. Having a positive outlook like you do helps with the bumps in the road. Glad to hear you have finished your education. Don't forget to apply for tuition reimbursement from your new employer so they fund your education. We are always here for you if you need refresher courses or job placement. Thanks again and Shippers Choice wishes you the best of luck.
Fantastic experience: Driving an 18 wheeler isn’t for everybody. And passing the DMV exam is not easy. These guys did a great job of giving me the skills I needed to get my license. The instructors each have their strengths and ways to reach individual students. Les did a great job teaching me and being patient with everyone. If you put in the proper effort on your end, the instructors will see you to the end successfully.
Glad to hear you have had a great experience. Good luck with your new career and don't forget to apply for tuition reimbursement.
Fantastic experience: Shippers choice is the best! “You get out of it exactly what you put into it”, is exactly what everyone says but its the truth! I could not be more thankful for everyone over at the newport news campus!! Les, larry, helena, steve, and mike were all such good instructors i am so thankful for them! Got my license first try and im off to being a trucker!!!!
Fantastic experience: I'm new at Shippers Choice. Let me tell you, all the instructors I deal with are extremely knowledgeable about the industry and requirements to pass DVV CDL test.they all can teach you what , and how to pass. It's up to you to listen and soak up that knowledge. As for organization, this school is much more organized than other trucking schools I've dealt with. There is a clear chain of command, and all are approachable. They will help and answer your questions. Instructors are actively involved and committed to you education. There is 4 week schedule at this school, last school there were students who had been there over a year, because of lack of instruction and lack of drive on students part. Cost of education here is average to industry, costs are explained, you shouldn't act surprised. To sum up, this is en excellent, well run school committed to you.
Negative experience: It's not a fake review. I went to the school in June 2018. Don't care about the damn students, so of course you wouldn't know. Everybody has a fake review. Look at how you all respond to reviews without fact checking. If anyone wants to go to this school better think again. Go to TCC!
FAKE REVIEW They are not a student this is just competition trying to lower our google review score
Negative experience: Overall experience was ok here. Would i recommend this place to someone I knew? Not at all. My time here I did learn a lot but felt that it was unorganized. School has been open to long for it not to have a plan laid out and for the ground not to be paved. Each student should be tested on pre trip daily and know how to straight back before being able to move to another backing maneuver. Instead a lot of people during my time were coming back saying they failed doing a straight back at the dmv or doing brake integrity test. They have to many people to a class which shows of course they are about the money as well as all the people who failed who come back for practice days or who havent been scheduled a test date at the dmv. Weekend class 15 students in 1 class 15 in another class 5 trucks 1 maybe out of service only 2 backing ranges maybe 3 instructors if your lucky. The head guy Ed talks to his employees like children can hear him yelling through the walls they dont like it of course can tell by there nagging on the range. Instructors Steve,Mike,Larry,Les and Helena all teach different but gained something from everybody
Negative experience: Go anywhere else you are wasting time and money with this company!!! They have no clue what they are doing!!!
##FAKE REVIEW!! FAKE REVIEW!! FAKE REVIEW!! This person is not a student from Shippers Choice. This is competition trying to make Shippers Choice look bad##
Positive experience: Does this school have lodging?
No Sorry we do not offer lodging
Negative experience: Shippers Choice instructors are cool pretty much. I can never get Ed on the phone I’ve called & left messages he doesn’t return my calls & he’s in charge of everything! If you ask an instructor something important they’ll say you’ll have to talk to Ed about that. Smh, It Takes for to get to DMV.
Ed already had spoken to you and explained the problem. ED talked to you on Friday June 15th and Sat June 16Th. Sunday Shippers Choice was closed as it was Father's Day. You have a Suspended License and therefore can not legally train on the road until you get your license cleared up. Ed has been working with you but ED won't schedule you for a practice on the road until your license is back. We can not schedule your practice until this is corrected first or we and you would be breaking the law.
Positive experience: UPDATE! 06/14/18 I would like to thank the owner of Shippers Choice for his quick response and resolution to our concerns. He has contacted my husband within a 24 hour time frame and offered him a solution that we are both really happy with. It’s good to know that the owner does care about the service that his company puts forth and will do whatever it takes to make things right. From a frustrating scheduling mishap to a very satisfied client, we would definitely recommend Shippers Choice. Mishaps will happen but, the key is taking ownership and making things RIGHT. Thanks again Charlie! UPDATE! HaHa you are too funny Mr Owner your last comment shows how professional you are Fake Fake Fake huh? The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Excuse me if that fell on the NN location this is all about the Chester VA office. My husband went to the school which is why you don’t see my name. I decide to put your school on blast for the inconvenience you caused my family. Further more you will also be receiving a complaint from BBB as well. It’s already been filed so let’s see if you think that’s fake Fake Fake as well. Again I say why schedule some one to pay money and train at your school for a class B lisence when the only class B truck you have is being used for students that are testing. You have one class B truck and a model truck that is useless Ridiculous! Shippers choice in Chester VA is a joke. Please stay away from this location to save yourself time, energy and money. They’re very unprofessional. Scheduling proficiently is a challenge for them. Running a business 101 should include supply and demand. If you have 1 truck available; why schedule 10 people for Testing and Training on the same day.? Then recommend for you to call DMV and reschedule. After speaking to DMV I learned that this is a regular occurence for students from (SC) to have to cancel or reschedule. I could write a short story on the unprofessionalism and disappointment I received from this school but, I’m going to save that for something else. Just wanted to warn others about the headache and the fact that you probably won’t receive your lisence from this location simply because they don’t have the supply or man power to train you effectively. Beware of recruiters who only purpose is to get you in and get your money.
After further review, please except my apology for your husband inconvenience we have caused your family. This is the first time this has happened in 25 years. The lackluster approach from one of our recruiters has caused your inconvenience. We refunded your money and offered a discount if you choose to use the truck for testing. We took immediate action to fix the problem with the recruiters. Since your husband was not a student and he was only renting the truck we where not able to verify you in system yesterday. They now have to check with the instructors first on any rental of equipment. We have apologized to your husband so please except my apology to you Mrs. Brinson.
Fantastic experience: My Name Latoya Fleetwood shippers choice has been so far awesome school , very exciting place to come to actually from the very beginning. I never thought about trucking , knew nothing about the trucking industry. Sense I became a student here a shippers choice I have learn a lot !!!!! I normally don’t write reviews , but I had to write this one ☝️ . I attend classes on weekends at shippers choice . I enjoy coming to this school every weekend . Instructors are awesome it’s all what you put into if you willing . They well help you understand what you need to know Mike , Steve , Tom and Dominique , they help me understand more about what I was doing . I recommend this school to anyone ex specially females . Awesome school stay focus don’t give up suck it up ,be a champ . God bless
Fantastic experience: Went to shippers choice in Newport news from april to may and it was a fun learning experience. They give you the tools that you need to pass the test. A lot of people complain about not having enough drive time but the driving part is the easiest of the test. If you can't pre trip or even off set backing pr parallel park well you dont even make it to the drive part of the test. Mike and Steve are very good instructors and they know what they're talking about. I took everything they taught me real serious and I passed my test on the first try. Thank you Mike and Steve for helping me get my CDL class A.
Fantastic experience: Went to shippers choice in Newport News Mike and Steve were great instructors. You get out of it exactly what you put into it. I took my DMV test within 10 days of the class finishing. Got a perfect score had no problem passing my test and within a month of getting my license I was in my own truck. I would highly recommend this to anyone yes you have to take turns but that’s to be expected in any classroom environment. Great school and friendly staff.
Positive experience: I just passed my CDL test at the DMV. This is a great school. As always, you will get out of it What you put in it..Wayne , Mike and Steven were always willing to help and answer any questions I had. The tight course made the DMV test a lot easier..There could be more time behind the wheel on the streets but you will get plenty of backing and the time to pre trip. I only recommend that there was a overhead cover to keep the students out of the rain and wind while they wait for their turn to get behind the wheel.
Negative experience: This school is terrible!!! Classes are too big, they can't keep instructors, and they really don't care they only want your money..If you think I'm lying ask for a walk thru and talk to a couple of the students standing around waiting for a chance to get in the truck they'll tell you the same thing
Sorry to hear you felt like you had a bad experience. I will forward your complaint to admission director. They should reach out to you within 48 hours.
Fantastic experience: I went to shippers Choice in Chester. Great place, extremely helpful staff and instructors, and they gave me all the knowledge and help with driving that I needed to successfully pass my CDL test on my first attempt. I am extremely greatful and appreciative. Thank you all for all of your help and I have been and will continue to recommend this school to people!!
Brenda- Good luck with your new career!!
Negative experience: Do not go to Newport news campus on weekends it's the worst people are always coming back for practice cause they have to retest so your time in the truck is cut short then you have to wait damn near a month before you can go take your test after you done with class and if you fail. It will take up to a month or two before they can set you up with a retest date and did I mention you have to give them a $100 before they can set you up with a retest date and while all this time going by they start billing you for the class so if you're not working cause you put all your time and energy to become a cdl holder and can't pay right now they will kick you off the retest list even if you already gave them a $100 so now you have to get things straight with there fiance company and wait for a new test date finished in September failed the test in October on parallel back cause I only was able to practice it twice the whole time in class paid $100 to retest went out there this morning a month later and they said my name was taken off the list cause I haven't made a payment thru the fiance company so I been out of class since September really since the end of August cause I forgot to tell you they will short you on a week of training if it falls on a holiday I strongly recommend not attending that campus I would like to speak with the owner to let him know how his Newport news location is really being ran
Fantastic experience: Fantastic training
Good Luck in your new career
Fantastic experience: Backing up was the hardest but know I can do this in my sleep
Good Luck in your new career
Fantastic experience: Class act training. Best training to date
Good Luck in your new career
Negative experience: If the lot that you practice in is a lot bigger than it probably wouldn't be so bad. You can't really learn what you need to know because the class is too big. I pay five grand for the school and I feel it was a bit too much. some of the instructors do care but some are just talk. I went to turn in my cdl after I passed and they didn't even know who I was. They do play favorites. I drove the truck on the road about two or three times out of a whole month.
Please go see Kevin Tuppic at Shippers Choice
Fantastic experience: This school is awesome I got everything I came for knowledge and tools to go and make money and safe driving skills, that school is so blessed to have great instructors like Rodney and Keith they had no problems with sharing their skills with you ... The mental book part and test taking ,and the physical driving part....(Its this saying that I love to say; it takes nothing from a candle to light another;and when you make it threw the door don't forget about the people behind you )..they showed me that! I recommend this school if you want to learn and be pushed for the real driving world...thanks Shippers choice!
Positive experience: SHIPPER CHOICE WAS A GOOD SCHOOL. IT`S UP TO YOU TO TAKE IN THE INFORMATION AND PAY ATTENTION . I HAD MY CDL FOR 3 YEARS AND IT`S REWARDING AT THE END OF THE DAY . LIKE ANY OTHER SCHOOL YOU WILL HAVE YOUR LIKES AND DISLIKES AS FAR AS ME . I DID A VERY GOOD JOB . I WAS THE WORST DRIVER IN MY CLASS BUT BECAME A VERY GOOD TRUCK DRIVER . MY FIRST YEAR I WAS OFFER A MENTOR JOB .
Please go see Kevin T the director at this location
Fantastic experience: Matthew you are correct hard work pays!! Thanks Shippers Choice
Negative experience: This place is horrible if you thinkin bout goin here don't
Please go see Kevin T the director of this location to address your concerns
Negative experience: The location in Newport News is horrible...the place is dirty and small. The lot you practice in on-site is very small and not equipped to handle the trailer size. Majority of the instructors have no experience with the road and are showing students improperly how to handle tractors. Way to many videos and unnecessary paperwork and not enough lectures from the instructors. For the money you pay, the service they provide doesn't add up...horrible seating when they're keeping you in the faculty for 8 hours a day and throughout that week you might drive the tractors 2 days out of 5...smh...just horrible...I advise people not to attend the facility in Newport News because the success rate is not good either. They really need a new director at this place!
Negative experience: Its been almost a year since I attended this school. The lot they were training us was to small to accommodate the trailers we were training with, so we had to practice off set parking and parallel parking with a trailer 8 feet shorter then we tested with. The trucks themselves were junk. The class started off huge and was half the size by the second week. As it was a 4 week course that is half way through we lost more then half the class. A blessing for whom was left as it gave the rest of us more time in the trucks. Time we paid to train was often taken up by trucking recruiters. The instructors did the best they could under the constraints placed on them. Had to remind myself many times that they were truck drivers and NOT trained teachers. At $100 a pop to retake a test plus the 45 min drive to and hour and a half drive back each time I went in for more training it became financial straining. As a family we decided I had wasted to much time and money on the endeavor. All in all including gas, loan, $500 down and $6000 in loans I wasted $7000 on the attempt. I would recommend going though a community collage or trade school to get your CDL.
Negative experience: i went to shipper choice and after i paid them over 3000 dollars i still have no beeb set u for my test and they are calling me for more money and now they said that i have been release and i ask them why you have not set me up for my test and they told me to set my own test up and they was going to put a lean on my license at the department of transportation and they are the ones that did not honor there contract and i still don't have my cdl a license i will see them in court ann i will report them to the better Business and get them for harassment because they have call all around to my family and friends and threatening my license that i don't have because they did not set up my test.i will see them in court.
Fantastic experience: Great hands-on teaching. I felt VERY prepared the test. Great instructors.
Fantastic experience: My experience at shippers choice was great! The instructor's was down to earth and showed me everything i would need to be successful at dmv and driving for a company. I would recommend this school to anybody who is looking to get their class a cdl.
Fantastic experience: well,my experience at shippers choice has been fast paced, an that was what i were looking for in a cdl training school. i learned from every trainer a bit here and a bit there all have made me a better and experienced driver, each took their craft an fashioned me as a student into a well rounded driver. phil, rodney, patrick, and tommy,i thank them and the school for a job well done.ben seigler
Fantastic experience: Bests school they help me a lot Alan ,Patric , juce and jou thankyou guys Att Luis mercado
Negative experience: STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS SCHOOL. You've been warned.
Fantastic experience: Loved it taught me all I needed to get started with a career... great staff and CeCe is a great trainer.
