Fantastic experience: I had the best driving school experience; my instructor was excellent. Though heading into it, I felt it was going to be an incredibly boring week, my driving instructor, Ms. Tracy, did a great job. She kept everyone engaged and did a great job drilling things into my mind. Even when I was slightly drifting off, my instructor knew exactly and was checking up on me. Even on the screen, I still felt like I was in a classroom with Ms. Tracy. Sorry for making this long but thank you so much again, Above Average Driving School!

Negative experience: YMMV. Driving lessons weren't that bad but the customer service wasn't great. Had to reach out multiple times to get appointments rescheduled. Either nobody is available to speak over the phone, or the instructor was avoiding my texts altogether - only responding after I reached out to someone else to get the appointments set up. The vibe I got from my instructor (Mr. Sandy) was definitely weird/disrespectful at times. Not sure if it was because I'm person of color, but it was definitely strange. I'll post my conversations here and you can judge for yourself. (Two separate instances) Failed my first driving exam and ended up passing after booking with another driving school - they even helped me get another appointment at the DMV. Comparatively getting anything relatively simple done with Above Average Driving felt like pulling teeth and just unnecessarily stressful.

Fantastic experience: I was able to get my driver's license thanks to Sandy! Sandy is a superb instructor; he's very patient and super supportive, and his explanations are really clear and easy to follow. As a beginner adult driver, he did a fantastic job of helping me nail down the fundamentals and be a safe, as well as more confident, driver. I would highly recommend him to anyone!

Fantastic experience: I am an adult learner and I had a great experience with Above Average Driving School. My driving instructor, Josh, was an excellent teacher, and I passed the road test on my first attempt thanks to him.

Fantastic experience: Overall: Josh is an excellent instructor and you are unlikely to find anyone better than him in the Durham-Raleigh neighborhood (any Above Average instructor will be great but from my personal experience, I highly recommend Mr Josh!). Above Average Driving School, especially Josh who was my instructor, allowed me to have a great experience driving. I went from having no driving experience to feeling confident driving on freeways and taking the road test confidently. The cost of the lessons is a little high but it is well worth it for the 10hr package of lessons (five 2hr lessons). You can take multiple sets as a beginner and fewer if you have more experience. Josh is excellent, allowing you to ease into driving regardless of whether you are an absolute beginner or have limited driving experience (I am aware of this because I ended up having to take a break from driving to focus on other parts of life resulting in my having to take multiple sets of lessons with a 3-4 month gap in between). As a beginner, you practice perfecting turns and going around cul-de-sacs while later on, you practice for the DMV test including 3 point turns and simple parking. Josh was great because he adapted the lessons as I progressed and accommodated requests such as teaching me how to parallel park and getting more practice on highways. He gave advice on driving during special situations (rain, driving at nights etc) I also really appreciated his patience and support as we dealt with the nightmarish scheduling system that the DMV has set up.

Fantastic experience: We contacted Above Average with just a few weeks until my mother in law's permit was set to expire due to the DMW putting an incorrect date on it when she moved here from abroad. AA was able to quickly get her booked for a few lessons to prep specifically for the road skills test and then bent over backwards to accommodate a walk in appointment with the car that she was most comfortable driving. Big thanks to Kaleb, Sandy and Tracy for helping us out!

Fantastic experience: I had a great experience at Above Average Driving School. My instructor was Mr. Josh, and his explanations were very helpful and concise, all extremely relevant to the DMV road test. He also sent me helpful tips and resources after our lesson. The driving school is very easy to get into contact with, and emails are read and responded to in less than a day.

Fantastic experience: Mr. CJ was very helpful and patient …he taught me some new skills for my test… Mrs. Tracy was also helpful for taking me to the dmv since she is mostly a classroom instructor. Overall their services was a 10/10

Negative experience: There business hours are wrong so when I tried to sign up I was waiting for soooo long just to find out they’re closed! A construction worker had to tell me. Edit: I understand/understood that it’s appointment only, but i couldn’t find it on the website or on google. If it was easy I would’ve made sure to get that done! I was trying to ask more questions before I have pay or ask/receive services. They did call back, but it was for my comment to be taken down. Fantastic experience: Ms. Tracey is one of the best teachers I've worked with. She makes sure all students are aware and understand the material. She not only taught me the dangers of driving, but also how to deal with those dangers if they occur, as well as how to avoid them.

Fantastic experience: Having only the most minimal of experiences while driving back in my hometown with my dad, I was nervous that I was going to struggle learning how to drive. I took 6 hours (3 2 hr sessions) of lessons with Mr. CJ and in the first lesson he instilled in me the skills and confidence that I felt comfortable driving around Durham. The other lessons helped me prepare for the DMV exam, and even though I struggled with the exam (I blame my test anxiety) he was patient and helped me along the way, even going out of his way to ensure there was another instructor that can take me when scheduling conflicts came up. I was able to pass thanks to Mr. CJ and their support and I don't think I could of been able to get my license if it wasn't for them.

Fantastic experience: I learned a lot with Ms. Tracy! There was a lot of things about driving that I assumed I knew, but her instruction helped me learn more. I learned how to actually make decisions on the road, as well as laws and safety regulations. This all helped me to gain a better idea on what happens on the road- helped by Ms. Tracy giving us scenarios to test our knowledge in. Overall, I got a lot out of drivers ed class with her!

Fantastic experience: Over these past 5 Saturdays, Mrs. Tracy taught me to 1. Control my emotions, 2. Assist others when they need help, and 3. When there is a collision ensure everyone is safe. In conclusion, Mrs. Tracy taught me, not only very important life lessons, but how to protect those around me and myself.

Fantastic experience: I took a couple of private driving classes with Mr Sandy as I haven’t been driving for around 14 years and I wanted to get my feet wet before jumping on the road. Mr Sandy was very nice and patient, he got me acclimated to the NC traffic. I had a great time driving with him!

Fantastic experience: We had a great week with Mrs. Tracy!! She was very patient with the students, and worked through the topics very well. She has a great understanding of what she's doing, and seems like she actually cares. Fantastic experience: I had a great experience at Above average driving. My teacher, Ms. Tracy taught us many very important aspects of driving. She taught us all about the insurance aspect of driving, the meaning of each sign, and how to act in emergency situations. This class was very helpful!

Fantastic experience: Above average was great. My son took the class virtually over spring break and passed the test with 100% to get his permit. Being able to schedule behind the wheel around our schedule was amazing. CJ was super patient and a great teacher. I even signed up for an extra 5 hours with CJ so my son would feel more confident before he drove with me as I wasn’t sure I would be a very good teacher - he was picked up and dropped at our house!

Fantastic experience: I had a great experience at Above Average Driving School! My teacher was Ms. Tracy and she prepared me well for my classroom instruction and exam. Some of the things I learned include blind spots, changing a tire, and how to merge onto a highway. Overall, it was a great experience and I’m glad I got to do it!

Fantastic experience: I would like to thank Mrs. Tracy and Above average driving school for making this whole drivers ed experience great. I learned a lot, including: 1. All about roadway signs and markings as well as their meanings. 2. I learned about the parts of cars and what they do to affect the vehicle while driving. 3. How to operate different vehicles safely, which is important for all drivers.

Fantastic experience: I took the zoom drivers ed class and learned a lot from it, not just how to drive a car, but the mechanics and maintenance of the car. I learned the difference between high beam and low beam spotlights, what a stale green light is, and how dangerous the road is just after it starts raining.

Fantastic experience: Above Average is a great driving school for beginners like me who have no driving experience in the US. I took 10 hours of driving with 3 different instructors - Kyle, Josh and CJ. All of them were cool instructors who guided me really well during the classes. Kyle needs special mention as I took majority of my classes with him, and he was kind enough to suit his schedule for me on Sundays. He taught me all the basic but important driving skills, and helped me take a mock driving test to prepare me for the actual test. Kyle is a very friendly and helpful instructor who would listen to my queries with patience and explain them really well. I had an enjoyable experience of driving with Kyle as well as CJ and Josh. I would highly recommend 'Above Average Driving School'. Thank you !!

Negative experience: Had worst experience with instructor CJ. Had to reschedule my office schedule n times because of his unavailability. Started lessons in April and couldn’t able to do road test till now. Had no commitment. Waste of money and time. Highly recommended not to take classes with Mr. CJ

Fantastic experience: As a new teen driver, I learned a lot in this class with Mrs. Tracy and it helped me a lot, I learned about the dangers of road rage, different facts about alcohol consumption and drinking and driving, and what all the different road signs mean.

Fantastic experience: The class was really good and convenient. My driver instructor, Mrs. Tracy, helped explain everything really well. Not only do the class go over information for driving and the road, but explained how the car works and what to do in certain scenarios if the car doesn’t work and you can’t get to anybody. Fantastic experience: My son had a great experience at Above Average Driving School. The instructor, Mrs. Tracy, went through lots of material, such as what to do when you are hydroplaning. She also went all of the important road signs and how to engage and communicate with other drivers. My son learned a lot in her class and had an overall great experience.

Fantastic experience: Gained my confidence in driving in the US and passed the drivers test 1 take because of the knowledge and skills imparted to me by my instructor Josh. I had 10 hours lesson with him and on my first day he would ask you about your baseline strengths and weaknesses and focus to improve the latter. Not only that, he is very friendly and patient making sure you are comfortable in every driving session. Thank you Josh!

Fantastic experience: The Above Average Driving school provided me with valuable driving skills. My instructor, Mrs. Tracy, was extremely helpful and delivered detailed lectures on driving techniques. Throughout the week-long course, I learned valuable knowledge, including the following key points: 1. Intersections are where most accidents occur. 2. In 1983, the North Carolina General Assembly passed the Safe Road Act, raising the drinking age from 18 to 21. 3. Refusing to take a breathalyzer test results in a year suspension of your driver's license. 4. Accumulating 7 points may lead to being assigned to a driver improvement clinic, which costs $70. 5. The minimum liability insurance required is $30,000 for injuries to anyone in a crash.

Fantastic experience: At Above Average driving school I had Mrs. Tracy for driver's ed. I learned about driving safely as well as many other driving related things. I didn't know many of the road signs and road rules, or the parts of the car. But luckily I learned all of them in this class. Thankfully due to this class I will be able to drive safer knowing all of the important information relating to road safety and road rules. I am so happy about this experience and glade I took this class after hearing all of my friends' bad stories from drivers ed. Thanks Mrs. Tracy!!

Fantastic experience: Through this past week I spent 30 hours learning with Mrs. Tracy and above average driving school. Mrs. Tracy was very kind, patient and funny, and she made sure we always had the right answer. I learned so many things like what the different lines on the road means, all the different regulatory signs, like stop and yield, and what to do if my brakes fail. I would highly recommend above average driving school to other people learning how to drive.

Fantastic experience: I did my drivers education course here with Mrs. Tracy and it was very informative. She made sure to go through the textbooks and handbooks in a lot of detail, and elaborated on it with new or recently developed information such as new laws or her personal advice. This was very helpful as it made sure to make us up to date and more conscious drivers. At the end of every chapter we also did the review which helped to make sure we knew the information. I would recommend for drivers education.

Fantastic experience: Loved my driving lessons here! I hadn’t driven in 5 years before taking my lessons with Above Average. My first two lessons were with Ms. Pakita before she left. She was a great instructor! My last three lessons were with Mr. Kyle (Above Average was great about rescheduling my lessons with someone new once Ms. Pakita left). I highly recommend Mr. Kyle! I wasn’t anxious at all while driving and got a lot of practice on I-40 which was my goal. Can’t recommend enough!

Fantastic experience: It can be difficult to make the time to learn to drive in college, but with Sandy being super accommodating, we managed to make the 10H of lessons work out with my busy class schedule. With less than two weeks between my permit and road test, Sandy was the best, ensuring I was being safe on the road and comfortable with driving around campus, as well as out on backroads and some busier roads too. I felt so prepared before my road test and could not commend Sandy more for his incredible patience bearing with me. He is also a great historical tour guide of the triangle area!

Fantastic experience: I took 20 hours of driving with Sandy and he was great! I felt very comfortable asking him any questions I had. He was great at giving positive reinforcement but also making sure you knew which areas need improvement and exactly how to improve them next time. He was also very professional and flexible when it came to scheduling classes, especially around my road test!

Fantastic experience: Josh Brewer you were God sent to me. Thank you a Gazillion times for helping me to learn driving and constantly instilling that confidence that "You can do it!" To all the people reading this review just wanna say never give up. I have never driven a bicycle and here I am ready to drive my own car. I could not clear my DMV exam in first attempt due to some simple mistakes. Finally here I am with a DL which I call License to Drive(James Bond, iykyk) Keep practicing, keep learning and important of all You got this! AADS you have some rockstar driving instructors and Josh is one of them. Thanks again!

Fantastic experience: I'm extremely happy that I got to take the Above Average Driving School Inc! Mrs. Tracy was my teacher, and she was informative, helpful, and taught me everything I could've needed regarding safe driving. The first thing she taught me was the Importance of seat belt usage: Mrs. Tracy would always engage with us, and made sure we understood the importance of wearing your seat belt before driving or riding in a vehicle. She brought up many examples throughout her life, where seatbelt usage was important o her, along with her friends and families. This led to me better understanding the overall importance of driving safety. The second thing Mrs. Tracy taught me, was maintaining a safe following distance: She made sure we always understood the importance of maintaining a safe following distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. By maintaining a safe following distance, we were able to drive safely and avoid any bad actors. Mrs. Tracy also made sure we understood the importance of checking mirrors and blind spots. She signified the importance of regularly check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes, merging, or making turns. This action helps you stay aware of your surroundings and avoid collisions with other vehicles. Most significantly, Mrs. Tracy also made sure that we were obeying all traffic signs and signals. We needed to always obey traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings, as they provided important information and instructions to help you navigate the roads safely. Finally, she helped us learn how to avoid distractions. Specifically minimizing distractions while driving, such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, or adjusting electronic devices. She signified the importance of having your focus on the road and always remaining alert to potential hazards. Because of her awesome instruction and directions, I feel like I've grown as a teen driver, and learned the importance of driving safely.

Fantastic experience: Kyle Presting was a really great teacher! He let me figure out how to drive with great instruction and explained the issues I had very well. I learned a lot quickly and I feel very prepared to drive.

Fantastic experience: 5 Things I learned from Above Average Driving School! 1. Anger is the most common emotion felt by drivers every day. This heavily influences decision making when on the road too. 2. I learned that every driver is required to have liability insurance as it protects drivers who have caused a collision. 3. I learned that negative peer pressure influences teen drivers and their decision making, but this can cause collisions. 4. I have learned that the first step you have to take when skidding starts is releasing your accelerator or brake. 5. I have also learned that hydroplaning occurs when a tire loses road contact when it rises on top of water.

Fantastic experience: Ms Tracy was a wonderful driving instructor! In her class I learned how to safely be a driver by buckling my seatbelt when I first get in the car, keep my hands on 10 and 2 o’clock, 9 and 3 or 8 and 4, keep a following distance of 2-3 seconds, and stay in lane position 2 and never turn left on red.

Fantastic experience: Thanks to Mr. Sandy I now have my license. He is excellent and pleasant to chat with. What I had to do as an L-1 visa holder was to get my learner permit, take 2 hours with this driving school (not law but their policy), and then rent the driving school's car to take the road test at the DMV.

Fantastic experience: My teen took the 30 hour virtual classroom instruction and 6 hours of driving instruction with Mr. Josh in preparation for getting a drivers permit. The virtual class was engaging and Mr. Josh did a great job helping my teen learn the rules of the road and develop driving confidence. We really appreciate the online scheduling and being able to quickly get onto Mr. Josh’s schedule to complete the driving portion. Thanks Above Average!

Fantastic experience: Above Average is a very good driving school. Me personally it helped me learn how to drive. The teachers go through each topic so descriptively. It helps me get a very good understanding of the real world driving. Above Average is the best driving school out there!

Fantastic experience: I’m so glad I chose Above Average Driving School to start my driving journey! My teacher was Ms. Tracy and I couldn't have asked for a better instructor. Not only did she break down all the concepts very clearly but she also provided the class with real life examples in order to connect what we learning with how to use in real life. Something that she taught us that will always stick with me while driving is how important is it to be a responsible and calm driver. Fantastic experience: Ms Tracy was a wonderful teacher she explained things really well and she taught me many things such as all of the road signs which I can apply to driving to stay safe in the road while driving my vehicle. Another thing she taught me was how to drive in all weather situations and cautions such as hydroplaning. Fantastic experience: I took this program and had Mrs. Tracy. Mrs. Tracy was an amazing teacher.I really appreciated how she pointed out all the important details we needed to write in our note. I also loved how she went out of her way to show us visual examples of situations that happened when people did not do the correct driving instructions. Fantastic experience: I would recommend Ms. Pakita as a driving instructor. She was very informative and made my daughter feel extremely comfortable. My daughter said she was patient and personable. She didn’t feel nervous with Ms. Pakita at all, in fact she prefers Ms. Pakita over me when it comes to driving. She was always on time, courteous and soft spoken. Fantastic experience: Ms. Pakita was the best instructor an adult with driving anxiety could hope for! She was patient and kind, and she always thoroughly answered any questions I had. Fantastic experience: Ms Pakita has truly been a godsend to me!! Her teaching method is phenomenal. Her instructions are really clear and cleverly broken down with tips that not only help me do everything right but also stick with me. She has a very kind and assuring aura about her. As an international learner with zero experience in driving, I was very scared to drive but she had me driving down the streets, Downtown, etc. in no time. To help me prepare for my road test, she shared some helpful videos and sent me a voice recording of some key steps. I will always be grateful!!

Fantastic experience: I have nothing but positive things to say about Josh and the Above Average family. He was nothing but professional, patient and knowledgeable. He let me know EXACTLY what I needed to know to pass my road test. He went the extra mile to let me practice on the day of the test, which eased my nerves. I have a minor suggestion for Above Average, and that’s to consider increasing the number of driving instructors. There was very little flexibility in Josh’s schedule to accommodate last minute appointment changes within a week, and the other instructor’s schedules appear to always be full, too! That could have been because I looking to start the course in the summer time when teens are out of school and looking to earn their licenses.

Fantastic experience: I am a sophomore in high school and my family and I chose AADS because the Saturday classes compromised most with my schedule, and the other reviews I had read said their experience with the school was satisfactory. The instructor I was given was Mrs. Tracy, and she was very efficient! She did not hesitate to let my class know the true dangers of driving and how to effectively avoid them. Not only did she teach us/put emphasis on safe and important factors of driving that were not put on the test, she also pushed our class to do well and take lots of notes as well as made sure we attended the classes at the correct time and made up for any time that we may have missed. I would say the most vital and memorable thing I learned during class was about the IPDE process, which stands for Identify, Predict, Decide, and Execute. This process is used to make calm assumptions and decisions when driving to avoid any danger you might encounter. We reviewed this process throughout the course numerous times, as it is a necessary and helpful part of driving. Alongside this we learned about different lane positions and when to use them while driving. Using a different lane position depending on the situation you're in on the road can effectively help you to avoid serious accidents, or just generally get around easier. Overall, I had a wonderful experience with Mrs. Tracy and AADS, and would heavily recommend it to any high schooler looking to start Driver's Ed!

Fantastic experience: As someone with little driving experience that is about to turn 15, Above Average Driving School helped me learn a lot about driving and Ms. Tracy and Mr. Brewer were so kind and helpful and always made sure everyone was caught up before continuing on to the next set of notes.

Fantastic experience: I had taken up classes here in 2018 when Mr Cole was around and he was amazing. He pushed me beyond limits and put in a lot of effort. I passed on my first attempt after just a week of practice. Fast forward 5 years and I chose the school again for my wife. I had an ok experience the second time. The instructor was pretty good and covered the basics but the training was nowhere near what I had gone through. My wife was never taken to the freeway for example. There were also a few times when the instructor would be about 20 minutes late ( to a 2 hour class by the way) and would rush at the 2 hour mark instead of making up for the time lost. There were also instances where she would just be on her phone while my wife was driving and my wife would feel disconnected and unsupported. My first experience was way above average but the second, maybe not as much. Edit: Mr Calvin called immediately after seeing this review, apologized many times for the experience and generously offered 2 extra hours. My wife already got her license but I do very much appreciate the gesture. Great customer service!

Fantastic experience: I had a wonderful experience with Mr.Sandy at the Above Average Driving School! I booked a 15 hour lesson with them and I have no regrets. Mr Sandy was patient, a good communicator and helpful. I highly recommend him for your learning experience at Above Average Driving School.

Fantastic experience: As a student who have little to no experience of driving, I have learned alot from this school. The teachers and staff are always trying their best to help the students to understand the rules of traffic, different part of the vehicle, and precautions about driving. My instructor Mrs. Tracy, is a very progressive and straightforward teacher. She alwasy asked us if we have any problem, and would always love to answer it for us. If my friends are asking me about learning to drive, I would love to recommend this place to them.

Fantastic experience: I had a wonderful time learning how to drive with Mr. Josh at the Above Average Driving School! Booked a 5-hour lesson with them and it was nothing short of amazing. Mr. Josh was incredibly patient, helpful and approachable. Although I was initially quite skeptical given the school's somewhat cheeky name, I have to say now that this driving school is, without a doubt, truly above average.

Positive experience: I would give the school a 5 star if my main instructor, Mr Darryl, can be nicer. He seems not like understand the differences of culture and growing environment can affect the driver’s habit. He can be very rude because of that, and sometimes I would mentally feel awful from his rude reminders when I stayed alone and thought about driving. Luckily, he got sick and asked for substitute instructors (Mr CJ and Mr Josh) that are way much nicer than him. He also got a nice sub (Mrs Pakita) that drives me to the road test and I passed one time. This is why I still have such a high rating if this school. Other than that, he responded messages quickly and made sure all lessons completed before the test. He also rented his car from driving school for me to do the road test. His practice route are helpful in all settings and they helped road test well, even not identical to the road test instructions. The response from Mr Kevin is quick and professional.

Fantastic experience: As a 25-year-old woman who had never driven before, I cannot recommend Above Average Driving School enough. I booked the 5-hour, 3 Day package with my instructor Mr. CJ and in those three days I was able to learn the skills necessary to get my drivers license. And this was with having literally zero experience of driving on the road. Above Average Driving School lives up to their name, and then some.

Fantastic experience: My child attended the Above Average Driving School course and finished their classroom lessons in a week. This was a less stressful way to prepare for getting a driver's license that doing it in high school. My child took copious notes that they can refer back to later and is scheduled to take the behind the wheel portion of the course soon after.

Fantastic experience: Miss Pakita was an amazing driving instructor! She was patient, calm, and very knowledgeable regarding NC DMV's and road test preparation. She was very flexible in terms of schedule and tailored the driving lessons to my needs.

Fantastic experience: My daughter recently completed the virtual classroom Teen Driver’s Education course (30 hours) which appeared to be just as effective, if not more, than being in a physical classroom. Ms. Tracy kept the students engaged with various scenarios and held them accountable with direct questions. Would highly recommend this alternative classroom approach to future students.

Fantastic experience: I will start by saying that Ms. Pakita was AMAZING, she was friendly, approachable and engaging! I signed up for a two hour session and was nervous as I had never driven for that amount of time before. She was reassuring, encouraging and helped strengthen my confidence throughout the drive. When she made corrections she she made sure to educate me and that I understood. She also answered questions I had about the roads and the drivers test. She was a joy to drive with and even had a cushion for me to sit on because I am a bit on the shorter side. I could go on but the amazing reviews about her were spot on she is a wonderful instructor. Fantastic experience: I took 10 hours of behind the wheel training from Mr. Darryl, he was very patient with me and helped me to correct the mistakes which I was repeatedly doing. From being anxious and not having a clue about what I was doing in my first class to start feeling confident with each lesson and appear for the test at the end of it and pass at the first attempt is my overall summary. Getting a driver's license was one of the biggest goal for me to achieve and I am happy that I did well.
