Getting a driver’s license in Texas starts with getting a learner’s permit, which is also called a learner’s license. A teen must be at least 15 years old and have taken the first six hours of a state-approved driver education course before they can get a learner’s permit. To get a learner’s permit, the teen must go to a Texas Driver License Office and pass a written test on traffic laws and safe driving.

After getting a learner’s permit, the teen must complete a 7-hour driving course in a car and 7 hours of driving while being watched. Once these things are done and the teen has had their learner’s permit for at least six months, they can take a driving test to get a provisional license.

In Texas, drivers under the age of 21 must take part in the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program, which requires them to move through different stages of driving privileges before getting a full license with no restrictions. The goal of the GDL program is to make sure that new drivers have the skills and experience they need to drive a car safely.

If a student is absent for more than 25% of the scheduled classroom training time, he or she will be terminated. A full hour of absence is charged to the student when he or she does not attend the full 55 minutes of instruction during a 60-minute period. If a student is kicked out because they didn’t follow the attendance rules, they can’t come back until the next class starts. If the student enters the next new class and completes the scheduled classroom and in-car phases of instruction within 365 days of the original contract, refunds that were due may be transferred to the new contract.

A student can get credit for training they’ve already had if they re-enroll and finish the relevant part of the course within 365 days of the first day of class on the original contract. No matter if a student makes up lessons or not, the attendance policy applies to all absences. Students might be able to do up to ten hours of make-up work outside of their regularly scheduled classroom time. Schools shall not initiate or encourage absences.

Make-up policies shall adhere to the following requirements: If a policy lets a student make up a missed lesson on the same day or at a later time in a regularly scheduled class, the class should be doing the same lesson the student missed the first time. For a policy that lets a student do a single make-up lesson, the Texas Education Agency must be able to look at a sample of each make-up lesson that is clearly marked as “makeup for the driver education course.” This sample must be kept at the school. Each make-up lesson must make it clear that it is a make-up lesson and say what units of instruction it will cover. There should be proof in the student’s file that make-up work was done outside of regular class time. A school might let a student go to a different class on the same day if the same lesson will be taught in both classes. This would keep the order of instruction the same. The time the alternative class was held must be written in the student’s instruction record. A student selecting alternative scheduling shall not be considered absent.
