Experiencia fantástica: After recently moving to South Carolina, we learned that our daughter had to attend a Driving School as part of the requirements to obtain a SC Driver’s License. We heard from a reliable source that Bee Safe Driving School was one of the best, if not THE best, around. Because I am a certified secondary education teacher and an involved homeschool mom, I called and spoke at length with the owner, Ron. He was very friendly and pleasant to talk to. The puns he was dropping about how he wants all the kids to “Bee Safe” on the road and how we all want our “Honeys” to come home “Safe” at night, had me rolling. I also truly appreciated his main “drive” for his school: He wants to stop the need for any more memorial crosses on the side of the road. I could certainly buy into that! After Ron answered all my questions, he invited me to attend the 8-hour class. I took him up on his offer because I was not used to the “rollercoaster” roads myself in Easley and the surrounding Greenville area. I was wondering if there were some local, insider techniques on how to handle these mountainous roads. I also wanted to know what Ron taught, so I could reinforce this with my daughter while I continued to teach her in my vehicle at home. Ron’s class was informative and engaging, and I was very impressed with his classroom management from the start. The room was full of about 40 teenagers, many of whom initially looked bored or disinterested. Ron quickly turned them around by engaging them in casual conversation about their driving experiences, plans, and fears thus far. He made them feel at ease by also sharing stories of what he experienced with other new drivers in the past. This seemed to make the kids feel more comfortable—they knew that they were not alone. Then Ron announced that throughout the day, there was going to be an ongoing game of Kahoot, which would test who was paying close attention to the content that was going to be taught. The grand prize: a Chick-fil-A Gift Card! The competition was on! Throughout the day, Ron covered expected material, like road signs and rules of the road, but he also went over laws that are unique to South Carolina. Additionally, he added variety to the class by showing videos. One was a testimonial of a teenage boy who used his car to play a speeding game with his best friend, which tragically resulted in his death. This was a very effective “scared straight” moment. You could have heard a pin drop in the room. Driving is nothing to be played with, and it seemed like these kids got the message loud and clear. Ron showed other video clips of how to do various maneuvers properly on the road. A lot of good content was taught, and it could engage both audio and visual learners. I thoroughly enjoyed this very informative class and Ron’s easy-going teaching style. Bravo! The hands-on road instruction afterwards reviewed lessons taught in class and made my daughter a more confident driver. Thanks again, Ron! We will be back soon for our next teen driver, for sure!
