Austin Driving School: Reviews
Fantastic experience: This school is the best!! The teacher Mrs. Young is super sweet and made this so much easier. Sign up!!!
Negative experience: It seems I am not the only one upset with what this school has done to me. I enrolled my daughter in a driving course in March 2022, and she only took one lesson because she moved to college in another city. Since then, I have been asking for a refund of $368, but this school is a scam. Every time I contact them, they act surprised that the refund hasn't been processed yet and promise to send a check for the amount. Therefore, I advise all parents not to enroll their teens there. They are a bunch of frauds.
Negative experience: One of the worst places. Very unorganized, majorly understaffed, doesn’t answer calls at all. I have been waiting for my certificate to be able to take the drivers test since I finished my course and it has now been more then 5 months of me just waiting and have not gotten just a simple piece of paper. In the middle of the 5 months they fired one lady and replaced her to supposedly fix her mess and problems she had but nothing has been fixed for me. They are never open when they say there open. Can never get a time to speak with them since they are rarely at the office and NEVER answer their phone.
Negative experience: If you are in Arlington do not waste your money on this school for your teen. After they take your money you can forget about ever getting scheduled for driving classes. They will tell you to call on Saturday. When you call on Saturday they will say call them on Thursday. After multiple attempts you will finally get on the schedule only to have them cancel the class an hour before and of course they won’t reschedule because you have to call them on Saturday when the schedule opens up. It would probably be easier to get someone to give you a kidney then to schedule driving lessons with Austin’s Driving School.
Fantastic experience: my husband was able to do a last minute walk in to get the driving text. was fast, east and inexpensive. didn't even have to use our own car. nice people! (april 9, 2019)
Negative experience: This is the most unwelcoming establishment I’ve ever stepped foot into. When you walk in, no one greets you. They can’t be bothered to look up from their phones. The 2 times that I scheduled my daughter to go drive with them, they did not schedule it properly and I was lied to about the time and length of her class. The last time we were there, I dropped her off at 7, she called me at 7:20 and told me that the driving instructor told her she needed to leave so he could lock the door. That’s it. No other words spoken. He obviously didn’t have her on his schedule. He did not bother to say “Hey, you’re not on my list this evening, are you sure you’re supposed to be here? Do you have a ride? Let’s figure this out.” Instead he locked my teenage daughter outside of an empty building, at night, and he drove away and left her there. I was boiling with rage. I got a refund. These people do not give a flip about their students. I pray that they go bankrupt.
Negative experience: very rude costumer service
Negative experience: Worst school ever. Save your $$$.
Fantastic experience: I had an amazing experience, at this location! I definitely recommend coming here! All of the instructors are very friendly and helpful.
Thank you for feedback. We're so glad you had a great experience.
Positive experience: My experience at Austin Driving school was decent. They weren't the best as far as in scheduling, but they got the job done. The driving instructors were fine and easy to drive with. Don Derryberry substituted one of my classes and he was terrible. Thankfully, he left and now they're hopefully getting back to shape.
Negative experience: I agree with the previous post regarding Austin Driving School giving you the “run around”. I experienced the same when trying to schedule my 16 year old driving time. There was always an excuse. Either the instructor is not in the office or they don’t have the schedule. It was always... call back. Even when they finally did get something schedule for you they would call you back and give some excuse why the driving school could not accommodate you on your scheduled day. Very unorganized and unprofessional. Don’t waste your money. There are much better options out there. I would have given “0” stars if that were an option.
Negative experience: Keeps blowing off actual drive time for my daughter.she went to the school a year and a half ago and didnt schedule her first lesson till a full year later. I keep trying and they tell me to contact the exact school location they tell me their computer system schedules it from home office to contact them back and forth with a run around. DONT USE THEM IF I COULD GIVE THEM ZERO STARS I WOULD!!
Negative experience: Please don't waste your money nor time at the 2325 N Davis Drive Arlington TX 76012 location. First, they have no telephone courtesy when requesting info/wanting to know more about the Adult Driver's Ed Behind the Wheel course(s) and the pricing. Except for one young lady who answers the phone during the week only in the afternoons (around 2pm or try 1:30pm) is very helpful and will answer questions/concerns you have. She will tell you to come into the office to register and once you've signed up, then you will know the availability of instructors and how soon they can work with you. As of July 2017, this North Arlington location only offers one package of Behind the Wheel First time Adult Drivers' (ages 18 to 24) that is 6 hours or 4 behind the wheel lessons. Pickup at home is available. Each lesson lasts 1 1/2 hour (or 90 mins) and the cost for total of 6 hours which is equal to the 4 lessons they offer is $420. My instructor for all 4 lessons (or 6 hours) was Donald Derryberry but they call him Don was horrible. I would not recommend him to any first time/beginner driver if you're serious about getting your license. If you are a parent reading this, please don't sign your child(ren) if you're getting him as an instructor. I didn't get a chance to choose my instructor but what I would suggest when you register is soon as you walk thru the door, there's a bulletin board with all the instructors' names on there, it would be smart to take notes so you can later do your research to see if there's any reviews you can find on whose good and whose not. Don didn't have the patience with me, and then after the 2nd lesson says "6 hours isn't enough for anyone whose learning to drive the first time. He doesn't know why the office offers the 6 hours package to begin with because in his years of teaching, no one is ready for the DPS exam after 6 hours/4lessons." Additionally, if you are ready to take your road test exam, Austin Driving school offers the third party testing which is they're authorized to give the DPS exam if for some reason you don't want to go through the DPS office. Austin Driving School offers the DPS exam ONLY at the South Arlington location for $55 . You have to get your own transportation to the South location and you will do the driving exam in the same car you learned in but not with your instructor. The examiner grading you will be a different instructor from who you practiced the 4 lessons with but SAME CAR you learned to drive in. Also, if you need more than the 4 lessons like I did, I recall from the pricing chalkboard they have in the office where you register, that's it's $75 additional lesson to the $420 if you need more practice which likely you will because that's what Don, my instructor told me. The $420 must pay upfront, they don't offer installments or payment plans. Just beware and don't make the mistake I did which was paid the $420 for their driving instructor to tell me on my 2nd lesson that 6 hours of driving (4 lessons worth) isn't enough to be prepared for the DPS exam and what he suggests to his students after the 2nd/ 3rd lesson, you drive without him for a week (in other words practice with someone else). But how could I have done this when I registered at the office and on the spot was forced to choose days and times (for ALL 4 of my lessons) that he had open on his roster? Person in the office calls driving instructor to say "a new person just signed up" and in return that instructor gives times & days in which you must select from right there on the spot. Not to mention, Don was late on 1st lesson and 2nd along with 3rd. Also, you is got to be calling the Austin office to ensure you're scheduled on the roster for the driving time you selected 2 weeks earlier. You may have your days & times down but the office doesn't, that's how unorganized and unprofessional they can be. I will NEVER suggest the North Arlington location (2325 N Davis Drive Arlington TX 76012) to NO ONE especially if you're a first time driver like myself with no knowledge nor skills.
Positive experience: As a student at Austin Driving School over 6 years ago, I experienced a decent experience. The driving instructors were not always the nicest, but got the job done. The front desk associates were disorganized but managed to take your request and handle it. Overall, average but gets the jobs done.
Negative experience: This is the absolute worst establishment I have ever encountered. I don't know where to start. The building is not kept up at all, everything was probably new in the late 70s. The majority of their furniture seems to be things that they have grabbed from the dumpster. The service? If I could give this place no stars, I would. They do not have enough drivers to schedule the students. They do not care if you are trying to get your child's license, they care about your money and not providing a service to you. Clearly this company only cares about making a profit because even their employee's recommend going somewhere else. I would pay 5 times the amount at any other school than go to Austin Driving School. I will be surprised if this place is still around in 5 years because this location is clearly an after thought to even their corporate office. Very unhelpful, rude, and not worth the time, energy, or money.
