Melrose Driving School: Reviews
Fantastic experience: 100% recommend melrose driving school !! I had Aaron for my instructor for all 3 classes & learned everything i needed to know for the behind the wheel exam. After all the lessons I felt confident and ready for my exam & I passed on the first try :)
Positive experience: First things first: Shoutout to Aaron, Deion, Temo, and Adam. They helped me out, thanks to them I got my license. Adam was there when l got my license it was a proud moment. Great school to learn to drive they were amazing and patient all my rides were fun and I learned a lot. Only problem is if you don’t live in the area they will only allow you to do lessons on weekends. Driving schools are supposed to pick you up from your house but if you don’t live in the area on weekdays you have to meet them somewhere and they won’t pick you up from your home. Their management is sorry and will inconvenience you. But the instructors are amazing and make it worth it and get your license.
Negative experience: Terrible!!! Paid for the whole package up front but they did such a poor job of teaching the necessary info our child was unable to pass the test and became discouraged. We let some time pass to re group and I taught her what the class could not and she passed easily and got her permit. Unfortunately when I called to schedule the driving lessons we had pre paid for they said we had exceeded the time limit of a year and they would not honor the purchase. Very disappointed!
As a small business (any business, really) that offers services, the concept of an expiration date is not uncommon. Especially when the services purchased takes a max of 5 days to complete. Your purchase was made in 2023 and is now expired.
It is also interesting that you called our office just after writing this review to ask to give you some sort of credit and to RETAKE the same In-Class Driver's Education course you were unhappy with. As one of the last driving schools that still offers In-Class Driver's Education (as opposed to Online Ed) within a 30mile radius, customizes the curriculum for neurodivergent and special accommodation students, has a high permit test passing rate in 38yrs, and offers 1on1 reviews for the few students that aren't able to pass a the permit test on their first try, I find your opinion most likely false.
Perhaps this method of writing negative reviews and then asking for credit has worked for you in the past but it is a very hurtful and dishonest practice. It is shameful that you go out of your way to write something negative to hurt ANY small business because of your lack of preparation or teaching the importance of not wasting your hard earned money to your child. I really do hope you take a moment to reflect on all the small businesses you've used in your life from your barista, restaurant staff, therapist, facialist, etc. and do better.
We will not be offering you a credit.
Hopefully, you do not try to take advantage of another driving school in this manner and find peace.
Fantastic experience: Fantastic instructor! I 100% endorse Melrose Driving School, in particular my daughter’s instructor, Temo. He demonstrated qualities of a great teacher: matching his teaching style to the student, excellent communication skills, kindness, patience, and how to instil confidence. With Temo’s help, my daughter passed her driving test and is thrilled about that.
Fantastic experience: Had one lesson with Jimmy after learning mostly with friends and family, very friendly and knowledgeable instructor who encouraged and instilled confidence. We met at the DMV on a Saturday (since it was closed the lot was very quiet) and he showed me exactly what will happen and where to go on test day, and then directed me around some of the test routes in the area. I reccomend!
Fantastic experience: Es una escuela muy buena yo fui allí aprender y tomar clase de manejo y hoy después de muchos años está mi hija tomando clases de manejo .
Fantastic experience: I would highly recommend this driving school!!!! I had Adam Lopez as an instructor and he was absolutely fantastic!!! He made sure I understood everything I was doing wrong and just really cleared up a lot of confusion around driving rules for me. I passed my test on the first try!!!!!
Fantastic experience: I got the 10 hour pack which is 5lessons- I had Telmo as a teacher and Jimmy towards the end. I love both instructors and had an amazingly positive experience with the driving school. They were wonderful.
 Hello Mary,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a positive review! We are very happy to hear that you had a great experience with us and our amazing instructors.
Negative experience: It saddens me to write this review. Have been giving this place good word of mouth reviews for years. Had no issues with the first kid, none with the second, but my they have changed. First, when I initially called to schedule appointments I reminded them that I had a bunch of unused lessons with my second child that I wanted to apply to my third, as I was told I could. They then clarified that the lessons expired after 6 months or maybe a year (can't recall), but regardless since my kids are 2+ years apart in age, they were long expired. I was a surprised they didn't mention that when I bought the package for child two and discussed it with them, but blamed myself for not asking, and went ahead and bought a package of three lessons and the in-class. Problem number two was scheduling. Nothing was ever available, so I booked the first two appointments I could get which were weeks in the future. I then asked to be put on a waitlist for cancels. To their credit, cancellations did come in and they called. When we booked that first one, nothing was discussed about the original appointments because I just assumed they were cancelling it, and their system didn't show an issue since I had a total of three to book. But when they called me a week or so later with another waitlist opening, it did come up because they said they couldn't book the appointment if I didn't buy another slot. At that point it became clear that they were not cancelling my original appointments, so I once again clarified that I was only doing two lessons at this point, and keeping one credit to use just before her test in August. They said they understood, and the booking went through for the waitlist appointment. A few weeks later there was a knock on my door. A Melrose Driving School instructor was there to pick up my daughter for one of those two original bookings. I explained that 1) she wasn't here and 2) that we had cancelled this appointment when it was replaced with the waitlist appointment. The driver said okay and left. I never heard from anyone. Just now I called to book her last lesson and was told we were charged for a same day cancellation. The manager there is completely obtuse. No matter what I said, she just kept saying "you aren't listening, you don't have any appointments." She should at least acknowledge that there was some mixup, even if she isn't willing to take the blame (it was 100% their fault, by the way). I'm done recommending this place. There are other nicer and less expensive schools to deal with. Beverly Driving School in KTown has been really responsive on the phone. Try them.
Negative experience: I paid for a package of 6 hours, 2 hours a day, my bad experience was the first 2 hours with an instructor named Francisco Gonzalez, horrible instructor, he does not give you confidence, he scolds, he is bad-tempered, he is terrible at teaching, he does not guide you, he makes you more nervous than usual when you start driving, he made me enter private property safely, and I didn't know what to do in that situation, then I passed a red light and I about to pass him because I was already nervous, super nervous and he didn't he braked for me, but he did it at the last minute, he never taught me how to handle the steering wheel, he never taught me how to handle the brake and he saved me that I was already going with a mental teaching that I could do, really this instructor did not even choose him as you instructor, my 4 more hours of classes helped me Yimmy Perez a very young boy, but very kind, very patient, very detailed, very good instructor, very explained all the mistakes I made, very explained all the signs on the street really He gets 100% I recommend them with all confidence..... in the schools, office very good attention, very good service. only that my bad experience was with my first class the most difficult because you arrive without knowing anything unfortunately I had this bad experience.....
Thank you for letting us know about your experience with us. We apologize for the first lesson you had with Francisco and we will speak with him about this incident. We know how important it is to feel confident and comfortable on the road especially on the first lesson and we will make sure this doesn't occur again. On the other hand, we're very glad Jimmy and the office staff were able to better your experience with us. Thank you!
Negative experience: Melrose Driving School doesn't even deserve the one star that I was prompted to give in order to write this review. To be clear, the drivers are excellent so please do not let this review reflect their level of their experience. We left a message to cancel a lesson 45 minutes past the 24 hour cancellation period and were told, "We will charge you and we don't care what the excuse was as this is our policy and you have to pay." I asked to be connected to the Manager as I was shocked from this response and was hoping the manager was going to be more reasonable however, Ana, the manager was just as dismissive and disrespectful. They are in the customer service business working with parents and children in a PANDEMIC and cannot offer any type of flexibility when a child gets sick and has to cancel or reschedule due to a last minute scheduling conflict. Mind you, we only cancelled 45 minutes after the designated 24 hour cancellation period. I wasn't even asking for a refund but was hoping we could roll over the cost of this lesson to the next lesson as we have 12 more lessons booked. I shared my disappointment with Ana and was told, "this is our policy and too bad." and to call Jessie the owner who is only available Friday's from 8-12 (shocking I know). As a business owner myself, in the hospitality space, I would have expected some level of flexibility and kindness, none of which i received. What a disappointing experience.
Fantastic experience: Josh was such a nice instructor. Made my driving test experience an awesome one! High recommended this place!
Negative experience: Unbelievable! Paid the 600$ fee for driving lessons in the future, and was told I needed to pay the amount again when I wanted to use the lessons. No refund or even discount.
Fantastic experience: Very professional. Great teachers.
Fantastic experience: I really needed a patient driving school. One that really cared about their students and one that had the resources and knowledge and professionalism to really help a person that has some special problems with driving. They were the ones I was recommended to. They were better than I expected and helped me with my problems and now I'm driving on the freeway. I am now able to get around Southern California with no fear of traffic. I am forever greatful and I can't thank Josh, my instructor, enough!
Fantastic experience: Good people
Fantastic experience: My daughter loved working with Adam! He was super chill, never made her nervous, and was incredibly supportive. He tailored every single lesson to exactly what she needed, always checking in with her to make sure everything made sense and she was comfortable. She loved working with him so much that she requested that he be the one to go with her to her driving test! And, of course, she passed! :)
Negative experience: Am not a customer. But who lets a student driver go down Coldwater Canyon and create a slow traffic situation. It was a blue Toyota Prius. Poor decision making!
Negative experience: I have never in my life experienced worst customer service. I gifted driving lessons.. The gentlemann setup his first appointment and wrote his info on a card.. They never called him as promised for the lesson.. I called them and they had called the wrong phone number and told me to talk to the manager on return after the holiday for them to resolve. The manager was talking back to me and did not care for 1 second to listen to me regarding there mistake and the reason why the lesson did not happen.. They also said they sent an email that they did not send. Do not trust them, take your business with a trustworthy company.
Negative experience: Run! Appointment times you make when booking are single handedly changed by the school without notice to you! That means when you are ready for a lesson nobody shows up...and you are billed for lessons you didn't know you had! They do not confirm anything in writing or e-mail period. And there are no refunds! Read reports on Yelp! Run!
Fantastic experience: Marcos is number one instructor. Patient and good at explaining difficult things in simple way. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: How's it going everyone I wanted to give my two sense and say that I was aided well and learned a significant amount of driver knowledge I'll be using for all my days to come. My instructor was Marcos Garido he was very patient and truly gave me a wider idea of how situations are handled and gave me comprehensive driving training. He did great an amazing teacher only needed a lesson and a driver refresher course before my test and I'm glad he helped me out. I highly recommend this driving school as well as this specific instructor thank you all and have a great day. 11/13/15
Negative experience: BEWARE!! They have a 24 hour cancelation policy, but don't answer the phones so you can adhere to the policy. However, you are still penalized. You would be better suited to find another driving school!!
Fantastic experience: I think this is the BEST driving school in Los Angeles area...my daughter learn driving lessons from this school. The girl "Brenae" is the best instructor and she taught my Daughter well with behind the wheel Thank you "Melrose"..keep it up
Fantastic experience: The best Driving School in Los Angeles and I highly recommend it. They are so experienced, professional and the driving program is specific to the requirements of the DMV road test. Melrose was so professional, patience, helpful and thanks to her I passed my road test at the first try.
Fantastic experience: My son did his driver's training here. Walking into so many unknown entities is tough, though he had many friends who attended this school. His in class instructors and the people who help you in the front office are wonderful. And his driving teacher, InSkip (aka Dr. Phil), is fantastic!
Fantastic experience: I signed my girlfriend up for 30 minute drive and license test for $90, she loved it! She was so happy about the staff and the school, they made her feel like famliy! I had to write this review! TWO THUMBS UP!
