Rules of the Road Driving School: Reviews

Negative experience: I will never forget the unprofessionalism that this facility has with their students. I saw a comment on here saying the staff gets argumentative. Yes, and the reason why this continues is because they hire mainly family/family friends. This is why no body gets fired or even in trouble. It’s quite sad honestly. You would think that a facility charging expensive classes would also reflect on the professionalism, but for this place it’s the complete opposite. Dallas was her name. I will never forget how rude and angry she got. It’s scary to think how mad she got when I went in to return my book and unenrolled myself from the class. People who get this mad should not be working in businesses where customer service should be top priority. More specifically around children. If Dallas was able to get this made in front of others for something so small, I can’t imagine what happens behind closed doors when no one is watching. Parents, please protect your kids.

Negative experience: I came here for my driving test and the driving instructor’s directions were very unclear, don’t waste your time here and go take your test somewhere much cheaper, $80 is insanely expensive for this type of service.

Fantastic experience: All three of my children participated in this program. Great instructors and AMAZING customer service. I am perplexed by the number of negative reviews. Expectations are outlined and very transparent. Worth every penny in my opinion!

Negative experience: This place is a SCAM! Do not book your driver Ed with them . They have taken $600 then dropped our daughter out of the class and refuse to give any money back . Awful instructors and even worst customer service . This place should NOT be in business

Negative experience: I paid for my daughter to attend the school, there is no way to do the drivers portion due to NO CERTIFIED instructor, unacceptable!! It’s been months since this had happened and now we have to find a place that is booked up and backlogged with there students, don’t waste your money here you’ll be in the same boat as my daughter

Negative experience: Would not recommend at all.

Positive experience: Be aware there are no instructors currently certified to administer the final WA DOL Drive test. You will need to go somewhere else. My daughter had a great experience with the instructors during her training time (many of which have moved on) but has waited near a year for instructors to become certified to do the final drive and the date continues to be extended. Understand what you will and will not get!

Negative experience: Do not go here . They are significantly more expensive than others. They will continue to say you need more private lessons so they can charge you more money . They will fail kids on final drives, even after they score high on practice drives, just to get more money from you. They will pass kids on practice drives, but when they take the test the next day they would fail them and tell to they need more private lessons.. After doing this a few times, we went to another school and of course passed with a 98% the very next day after they failed him. They just want more money .

Hi Jenny,

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We are happy to hear that all the practicing your student did with us helped them be successful with eventually passing the drive test.

Negative experience: Awful experience. Do NOT take your driving skills test there if they offer a woman. She sets you up for a failure. Passed my test in Renton an hour later after being failed in Enumclaw by a very rude girl who doesn’t give clear directions.

Rules of the Road Driving School

Mariya Naumova,

We appreciate the time you took to write this review and would like to clarify a few things. All state certified examiners are required to give very specific instructions during the skills exam (Ex. “At the next corner turn left/right”). No examiner can assist the driver by directing them to use a clearly marked 2-way left turn lane when directed to turn left. It is up to the driver to know the rules of the road and move into a turn lane to make a legal turn. Per Washington state regulations, if a turn is not made from the correct lane, the exam is to be ended and scored as a fail. We hope you have reviewed the laws on turn lanes so this error is not made again in the future.

Fantastic experience: I brought my grandson in for his road test. My grandson and I both were treated with respect and the staff was very friendly. I felt it was a very relaxed atmosphere for my grandson. The person giving the road test was pleasant and courteous. The waiting room was comfortable, and they had no problem with me using their private restroom facilities. My grandson had a good experience, and he passed!

Negative experience: The website is a mess. Everything is just thrown where it can be as opposed to where it should be. Information given about testing is very confusing and the staff are very hostile when told the info they gave us was not on the website and front desk was very quick to throw her coworker under the bus and blame her for the confusion. Because of all the stress and hostility i was extremely uncomfortable taking my knowledge test. We'll be going to Auburn from now on for the unprofessionalism shown here.

Rat Kid Art,

It’s unfortunate that you did not find our website useful. As you’ve seen, there is A LOT of information to know and share regarding testing eligibility and requirements in Washington state. For some, this can result in “information overload” when trying to figure out: what test they need to take, where they can take it and when they can test. We try our best to relay all this information in a way that is understandable to everyone but sometimes we may fall short and we apologize for that.

We wish you the best of luck in your future licensing testing.

Negative experience: Very unorganized and hard to navigate website. Staff give conflicting information and get argumentative when you advise them you were told something else by another employee. Go to surrounding cities instead if in need of a driving school. Edited with a response to ROTR: No, we are good. There is no need to clarify anything, and there is no confusion. First impressions are everything and we wont be bringing you our business again .

Rules of the Road Driving School
Rules of the Road Driving School

D Kay,

We thank you for your feedback. We are surprised to hear that you found our website hard to navigate. We have it set up in a way that categorizes the two sides of our business (driving school and licensing testing), as a way to make it easier to follow. As for our employees providing conflicting information, we would need more specifics on your situation to assist with this issue. You are more then welcome to contact us directly and we would be more then happy to clear up any confusion you may have.

Positive experience: My boys attended here and they enjoyed it. My older son attended the year before and this place was his second driving school. He attended a driving school in Auburn and after two days he talked to us about quitting, apparently the instructor at that school was condescending. Here at ROTR he looked forward to going to class, he was enrolled in the weekend morning classes. My second son just finished the June classes and is in the process of getting his license. He too enjoyed the classes. The staff are friendly and helpful. The only time I ever had to call is when my son missed his driving session because his Mom didn't take him. I highly recommend sending your soon to be drivers here. According to my sons the instructor is "cool" and coming from them that's a good review because they don't often label anyone cool.

Hi Christopher,

Thank you for sharing your positive experience with our driving school! We are thrilled to hear that your sons enjoyed their time in our course and that they looked forward to coming to class. Thank you again!

Fantastic experience: I needed to take my written and drive test. The staff was very friendly and professional. The process went very smooth and the facility was very organized. I had a great experience here and recommend this business to anyone looking to get their license quickly.

Negative experience: TERRIBLE! This facility has no flexibility and is extremely expensive!!! Do not be fooled! We had to pay 575.00 for a class that does not include the driving exam nor drive test. That’s additional 75.00! Good Lord it’s highway robbery! I would advise to AVOID this facility, it’s worth it to drive to Auburn, Bonney Lake, or Covington!

Rules of the Road Driving School
Rules of the Road Driving School

Leann Blanco,

It is unfortunate to hear that you were not satisfied with your experience with our driving school. It appears that your main issue is the price of our driver education course and licensing testing. A very important thing to keep in mind is that all of our staff, including our state certified instructors and examiners are not volunteers. This means that they are paid for all the work that they do. Unfortunately, we are not tax payer funded, that is why we must charge for all the services that we provide (driver education and licensing testing).

As far as flexibility goes, our office is staffed Monday-Saturday and we offer behind-the-wheel drive times and licensing testing appointment times 6 days a week (Monday-Saturday) ranging from mid morning to 6 p.m. With that amount of appointment times, we are most often able to find a day/time that works with most schedules. It is too bad to hear that with that amount of availability we were unable to accommodate your needs.

We wish you the best of luck in your future testing and driver education experiences.

Negative experience: 7 kids take their test and one pass, does not seem right for them to be failing so many students that they teach. 5 star from "A Google user" and no commet rrrrrrright Reply since i can not reply to you. Why is it not on a computer system like i took it years ago? With the issue i know you have with marking the test wrong buy the person grading them. Confused how that happens on multiple choice. And with the staff that you claim is professional when one person says they need their permit 10 days before the class starts and one person saying that they need it before they start driving by the end on the course. The money I spent there was not worth the professionalism you claim to have, I will not recommend to go there and go somewhere much further like multiple peolpe have said before.

Rules of the Road Driving School
Rules of the Road Driving School

David Jorgensen,

It is important to remember that the Knowledge exam is a 40 question multiple choice test that is written by the state of Washington. Unfortunately, we only administer the exam and therefore have no choice in who passes or fails; we simply give the exam and it is up to the tester to answer enough questions correct to receive a passing score (80% or higher). It is also important to remember that just because a student takes our driver education course, that does not guarantee them a passing score on the Knowledge exam. Again , it is completely up to ALL students & testers to study the Washington Drive Guide (which is what the Knowledge exam is based on) and answer at least 32 out of the 40 questions correct (minimum 80%).

We hope that this clears up any confusion that you might have regarding the Knowledge exam.

Regards,
Rules of the Road Driving School

David Jorgensen,

To answer your question regarding why the test is no longer on a computer, the State of Washington has control over HOW the test is administered. For the last 5 years, since we have been administering these exams, it has been in written form and unfortunately, we do not have any way of changing that since we are contracted by the state.

As far as your concern about the examiner marking answers incorrect, please be aware that we are audited by the State of Washington yearly and all applicants exams are clearly gone through. I can assure you that if we had any issue with an examiner mis-grading exams, we would be notified immediately.

As for the time frame for a student getting their permit; the state allows enrolled students to get their permit using a "permit waiver" no earlier then 10 days prior to the start of their course. That is a state law, not a personal decision on our part. Not all families are able to make it to DOL within those first 10 days, so we say that All students must have their permit within the first week of class, that way they do not fall behind with their first behind-the-wheel drive. By law, we cannot drive with students that do not have permits, therefore we would never advice a student that they could wait to get their permit by the end of the course because they would have no way to practice at home or complete the required behind-the-wheel portion of the program.

It's unfortunate to hear that you were not satisfied with our professionalism. However, we wish you the best of luck in the future with any further driver education needs you might have.

Sincerely,
Rules of the Road Driving School

Brianna McClusky,

We here at Rules of the Road Driving School are committed to our outstanding customer service and are extremely concerned when we receive a negative review from one of our customers. From looking at your file, it appears that we haven’t seen you since July 2, 2015. Have we had any other recent contact with you in our office? Is there an unresolved conflict from over 2 years ago? Is there anything that we can do to resolve this with you? We ask that you please contact us so that we can resolve this.

Thank you

Mark Hoffer,

It is unfortunate to hear that you were unhappy with our flexibility. However, it is important to remember that our licensing testing is done by appointment time and when a customer arrives 30 minutes late for a scheduled appointment, there's not much that we can do when we have other customers scheduled for the remainder of the day.

Negative experience: Ive had 2 kids go there and have had teachers flunk students for no reason, just to make money. They do not respect or consider parents concerns, and the money is what they are after. they charge for everything and its awful!!! Ive had kids crying because of the way the drivers treated them, Ive had the teachers blame the parents, insult my child, and i will never ever go or send anyone i know to this school! go anywhere else.

Bear Dean,

We are sorry to hear that you did not have a pleasant experience with our driver education program. We here at Rules of the Road Driving School hold ourselves to very high standards when it comes to providing the absolute best driver education to our students. Our state certified instructors put everything they have into every lesson and truly want the best out of every driver.

Driver education is one of the most important subjects a teen will ever learn in their life time. Good driving skills and habits are life-long skills that can save, not only your teen's life but other lives as well. Our program requires parent involvement and we strongly encourage it from day one. At home practice is critical for all students to be successful and that is why we provide all enrolled students with every behind-the-wheel drive route that they will be required to drive during the program. Our expectation is that all parents will dedicated as much time with their teen as needed for them to improve on necessary skills. Unfortunately, if parents are not as involved as they should be and the student is not getting the required support at home, they may not be as successful.

Due to the fact that our curriculum exceeds Washington States requirements, we hold our students to a higher standard when it comes to driving skills. Our behind-the-wheel drives are all pass/fail. If a student is not performing at the skill level that meets our standards we cannot pass them. Driving is an extremely dangerous activity and at times a student may do something that puts our vehicle and potentially another vehicle at risk. If something like that occurs, our instructor may need to take control of the vehicle either physically or verbally to correct the situation. At that time, a student may feel that the instructor was harsh but when dealing with a dangerous situation, we must be "to the point" when time is of the essence.

Additional fees are a necessary element of running a driving school. Due to the fact that we are privately owned and operated, we are not tax payer funded and all of our state certified instructors are paid hourly for their work. That means that when any additional time is required above and beyond the 40 hour program, which is covered by tuition, we must charge for that time. When it comes to performing additional behind-the-wheel drives, we must factor in not only instructor pay but also, fuel and wear and tear on our vehicles.

We understand that all parents want their teen to be successful. However, we will hold all teens to the same high standard and accountable for their actions behind-the-wheel and in class. We cannot and will not pass a teen just to pass them.

Regards,
Rules of the Road Driving School

Fantastic experience: This is the best program out there! All three of my children completed the program as well as many of my friends children, the staff is funny and helps the children learn but with a law background the kids get to know all the correct info. Very flexible and relaxed for the most part they do hold the kids accountable. So if the kids sign up and don't let the parents know it's in the kids. But I like that with me and my husband working full time and 5 kids to get to activities they are great at schedules. Will be sending my last child there as well!!!

Julie Kelly 10 years ago

Negative experience: This place has NO flexibility. My son has an open schedule after school and a ride to drivers ed if he needs it. But they require a PARENT to attend the first 2-hr class. I'm a hospital nurse. I can't just leave work early. Do you think they allowed me to attend the same session the next day, on my Tuesday off? Nope. Because my son attends Mon, Wed sessions. My babysitter had to take him til I could sneak in late. And although I paid for Mon, Wed 4-6pm the school requires 5 individual drives in addition to class time and WILL NOT PROVIDE ADEQUATE OPPORTUNITY FOR THEIR REQUIREMENTS TO BE COMPLETED OUTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL HOURS. I found out a week into the program that 3 of my sons hour long drives with the instructor are during his classes at the high school. BUT IT'S TOO LATE FOR A REFUND? ? I paid $550 for him to skip school?
