Merrimack Valley Auto School: Reviews
Negative experience: Did NOT have a great experience here. Paid for the service and my daughter still can’t pass her license after 2 failed attempts and using their sponsors. We were basically asked wondering what we actually paid for now $1,000 later. Would not recommend this location personally.
This reveiw is so unfair! Your daughter first attempt was six months ago. Unfortunately it did not go well due to her lack of practice. This was consistently pointed out in her lesson evals. The RMV requires, by law, an additional 40 hours of practice AT HOME, above the 12 hours that she gets with us. This was pointed out in notes and in person during her lessons. Then you come back 6 months later. Most will retake the exam in two weeks in order for everything to still be fresh in their mind. You were asked "Have you been getting practice?" Apparently not. 2nd attempt did not go well either. These exams that are held at our location are done by the RMV examiner, not us. But apparently he sees the fact that she is not that comfortable on the road and did not keep up with the recommendation necessary to pass the exam. I spoke with your daughter immediatly after the exam. AGAIN I EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF PRACTICING EVERY DAY, This does so much to show her confidence behind the wheel. There is no other replacement for this practice! I even offered a free sponsorship this time around. Even though this is a reflection for the lack of practice at home we always feel badly about this. I also made her promise that she would get the necessary practice at home before the next exam! One picture behind the wheel does not make for consistent practice ma'am. I wish your daughter luck on the next exam. Kindly stop blaming others for your lack of investment in your daughter's very important driving career. It will go along way to keeping her safe on the road not to mention keeping your insurance rates as low as they can be for a new driver.
Negative experience: Paid for the class just to be treated like an idiot from the instructor who was clearly a child having a bad day. Not worth the money or the hassle, look elsewhere.
 Good morning Chris
You did not pay for a class and that was not my instructor! You paid for a road test at my location with an examiner from the RMV, You failed your test automatically because you could not properly display your hand signals. This is the first thing asked on a road test and is cause for automatic failure for all taking th exam. I suggest you look at the list of skills required to pass the road exam that I provided. I find it incredibly petty that you would give a bad review to my company when it was you who failed the road test without taking a single lesson from us!. I would also suggest you take a few lessons at another company before booking another exam.
Good luck
Negative experience: Keep away from this Auto School!! The Lady Joanne there is extremely rude. I called her to register my son for road test and sponsor, she asked me to register and pay the fees which I did right away, then no respond to her emails or phones until 2 day later to tell me, I need to cancel the test appointment at RMV, and I did right away. No respond again until I gave up and transferred to another auto school. She responded a day after to tell me she can't do it due to my transfer and no money to refund?? She charged me $150 and provide me no service
I transfered all of your records and added you to my road test. I responded to your emails three times from the emergency room no less. At 7:30 pm you left a voicemail saying that you did cancel your RMV road lesson as I requested because they will not allow you on my test if you have another booked. All was well until the next morning when You trasferred with no explanation at the time after I already did all the legwork.
Negative experience: It’s honestly disappointing i can’t give 0 stars due to this experience. if you want to get robbed ignored and gas lit please apply here. first they seem nice then they start ignoring you and coming back with rude responses if your lucky. When you try calling it will go to voicemail they don’t answer the phone or respond to the messages. After some time i realized this place was a waste of time but i had already paid 150$ to try to get an apointment. I apply at another school and the same day I get an apointment. I then email to try to cancel with this school (Merrimack) and they tell me good luck and you won’t be getting a refund. I can’t belive how much of a dirty scummy establishment this is loosing customers over 150$ and not wanting to refund money just cuz they feel like it. PLEASE DONT APPLY HERE
Your reecords were transferred abd you were put on my road test, All of your messages were responded to even though I was at the emergency room that entire day.. They all said that you were all set. Even let you know that you had to cancel your RMV appointment so I could put you on my test. At 7:30 pm you responded that you did and all was well. The next morning you transferred. The only indication that your were doing so was from the RMV saying you did so. The work was already done at that point. It was your decision to transfer when there wasn't a reason to do so.
Fantastic experience: This auto is absolutely so helpful and definitely recommend. My mother recently moved to the country and doesn’t speak the best English but knows a little. The owner Joanne was so kind and willing to help her learn and the girl on the phone was Taylor and she was very helpful with scheduling and walking us through what the process of getting my mom her license looks like. I definitely recommend this school to anyone wanting to learn how to drive.
Fantastic experience: My niece recently attended Merrimack Valley Auto School, and it was a fantastic experience! The instructors were patient and encouraging, which helped build her confidence on the road. I highly recommend this school for anyone looking to help become a safe and competent driver!
Fantastic experience: Very highly recommended driving school! I have had three of my children go through their program and I have been very pleased with the outcome. They are always updating their curriculum so even I learn something new every time we come back.
Fantastic experience: This school offers an outstanding experience. The instructors were incredibly professional, combining a wealth of knowledge with a kind approach that made learning enjoyable. Their patience and clear explanations helped me grasp even the most challenging concepts. Most importantly, I felt confident behind the wheel. I highly recommend this driving school to anyone looking to master their driving skills in a supportive environment.
Fantastic experience: Very detailed and informative lessons!!
Thank you for your kind words Argenis. We appreciate you and your family! Stay safe!
Fantastic experience: Great Classes, Great on road lessons, and Amazing driving instructors.
Thank you so much for your kind words, D'Anthony. You have been a pleasure both in class and on the road. Stay safe!
Negative experience: Avoid. They cancelled lessons on my kid twice, once within 90mins of the lesson, once within 7 mins of the start time. Their cancellation policy only works one way. Their convenience matters more than that of their customers.
Sometimes we have to cancel due to illness or car situations. I believe we tried to reschedule you. You were unable to do the make up lessons. Stuff does happen. We ALWAYS do our best to reschedule you.
Positive experience: I had a bad experience with a driving instructor from this auto school which consisted of insults, yelling, and overall unprofessional behavior. This happened months ago and I felt it was right to share. But I’m leaving three stars considering there are good instructors in this school like Sharon and John who made me feel more confident in my driving before my test in which I passed. But it got to point where I was afraid to have my next appointment because of Lisa Gaulvin. I have had strict instructors in which I had no problems with, but she crossed multiple boundaries. When I made mistakes instead of teaching me she would yell at me and made me feel as if I was stupid. These would be small mistakes like missing a road, things that wouldn’t be considered unsafe. She would tell me things like “It’s not that hard to understand”, “Are you on drugs?”, “This is 4th grade math”, “ I can’t make it any clearer”, “This is your 8th lesson and your driving like this?”. There was a time where we had to do a U-turn in which I wasn’t taught before, we were at a quiet residential area no traffic to be seen and at a parking lot. I was driving In the parking lot and she told me right then and there “alright do a U-turn now, put your directionals and check your blind spots.” Since this was last minute and I’ve never done this before I was confused and stopped the car safely making sure no car was around. She then said “alright you did absolutely nothing I told you to do , just go”. Instead of teaching me she got frustrated and went on to say she couldn’t make it anymore clearer. After these lessons I believed I was just a terrible driver, she was nice to everyone but me so obviously it meant I was a hazard. But in one lessons when I had to observe another student, this student made multiple mistakes like not putting on his directionals especially at intersections, going 25-30 mph on a 45 speed limit, and stopping at a green light. Instead of yelling at him like she would’ve done to me, she simply told him to remeber his directionals, to go a little bit faster and proceed when at a green light. Mind you this was his last lesson. I felt insulted, embarrassed and ashamed with this instructor. It seems she picks students to be negative towards as one of my peers had complained to me about her teaching, experiencing the same as me. Though to other students she’s incredibly nice. This is insanely dangerous and as an instructor it’s their job to teach and keep a calm environment for the student to learn.
Hello, I am very sorry that you had this experience with us. We certainly do not aim to make our students feel "stupid or ashamed"! I do commend you for pointing out your positive experiences with our instructors, however I really wish that you reached out to us at the time and not months afterwards. It is difficult for me to know who you are and to figure out exactly what happened after so much time has passed. I am happy that you passed your road test and are now licensed which is the ultimate goal. Please stay safe!
Negative experience: ***Hidden Policy & Safety Concerns*** Merrimack Valley Auto School has a strict policy that's not clearly advertised: Students MUST wait 3 months after getting their permit AND complete 20 hours of parent-led driving before ANY professional lessons. This is NOT a state requirement, and many other schools don't have this restriction. You will not find this out until AFTER you've made your purchase during the parent class (which is too late, considering they do not provide refunds). I'm concerned because parents aren't driving instructors. Early professional lessons are crucial for everyones safety, establishing safe driving habits, and avoiding teaching driving mistakes that instructors then need to fix. I asked MVAS for flexibility or a refund to transfer to a different school, but they refused. If you want your child to learn from qualified instructors right away, consider other driving schools that prioritize early professional training.
" Students MUST wait 3 months after getting their permit AND complete 20 hours of parent-led driving before ANY professional lessons". Thank you for directly quoting our Commitment to Safe Driving Contract. It is right there when you sign up and fully explained as we go along. A lot of other schools do adopt this tyoe of policy as well as it does produce the best results. As I have stated before, this is a collaborative effort. Your child should be practicing this very important skill as much as possible. It is also a state law that they have at least 40 hours of practice at HOME. This is the LAW that you will have to sign that you have completed on the road test application. Again, I am fully transparent with my policy. I do not change it with the threat of bad reviews as I do believe that this has been proven to be the best for all. I did refuse the refund based on our contract and that payment was made six months ago. I have not refused a transfer.

 Hello Tamika,
Could you give me a reference as to what you are speaking about. You are not a student here, and I have asked all of my instructors if they have had any issues lately. I would love to help you out, if you could please let me know who you are and what this is about.
Again, you aren't a student here, so please help me out and let me know what's going on.
Joanne
Fantastic experience: after struggling for two months finding a good and professional driving school, and after having the worst experiences with very unprofessional ones, I was extremely happy to get my driving license through Merrimack Valley Auto School, who helped me in one week to master the road test maneuvers and made sure I will feel confident the day of the road test. Long story short, if you want to pass your road test, this is the Auto school to go with !!!! good luck

Fantastic experience: I wanted to take some time and write a review for Merrimack Valley auto school. My wife is from Thailand, so English is not her first language. While she does speak English well, she talks very softly. This was also her first time learning to drive. We had gone to another school and were very disappointed for many reasons. The staff at Merrimack Valley auto school, especially Joanne, are just excellent. She was friendly, patient, yet firm. They were able to give her confidence, and she was able to pass her test on her attempt after learning here. They went out of their way to make appointments for her and, I felt comfortable letting her study there. I can not recommend Merrimack Valley auto school enough, and my only regret is I did not come here first. A+
Thank you for your kind words Dan. Both you and Kob were a pleasure to work with. I wish you the best. Stay safe and healthy. Joanne
Fantastic experience: Our son has a learning disability, so it was critical to find an auto school willing to work with us and help him understand the rules of the road and good driving discipline. Joanne and her team did an EXCELLENT job of getting him prepared for his road test. What I appreciated most was that, based on his personal struggles getting comfortable behind the wheel, MVAS allowed us to spread out his last handful of driving sessions so that we could practice more between lessons. In turn, they help identify where he still needed work so that we could focus on those areas before his next lesson. In the end, he passed on his first attempt and received high praise from the examiner. Thank you, MVAS; I cannot strongly recommend your business enough!
Thank you so much for your kind words. We are very proud of Jakob! We enjoyed working with him, as well as your family. Stay safe!
