Northland Driving School: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Would recommend
Fantastic experience: I had an excellent experience with Northland Driving School. Julie, my instructor, was knowledgeable, patient, and made learning to drive enjoyable. The lessons were well-structured and covered everything I needed to feel confident on the road.
Negative experience: This place used to be great, but it’s really gone downhill recently. 0/10 would not recommend
Hi There! I'm just wondering if there’s any more detail you can provide on why you feel this way. I am sorry to hear this was your experience. Feel free to contact us if there is anything we can do to help you. Thank you!
Fantastic experience: great place, learned a lot from them and everyone was welcoming!
Thank you, Makayla!
Fantastic experience: Northland Driving School was a fun and great experience! It was quick and easy and I also learned things I’ve never known. I’ve learned that driving can be one of the most dangerous things if you don’t pay attention and you don’t know what you’re doing, and Julie helped us greatly by teaching us those things I’d like to say thank you to CJM for giving us a scholarship and I’d like to thank Julie for Helping us and just looking out for us because the road is a dangerous place. She’s a great and fun instructor and she made last and jokes so class wasn’t boring.
Thank you Lee for your kind words! :) Good luck on your test!
Negative experience: Multiple issues with scheduling behind the wheel. No consideration for even partial refund no matter what. Asked twice to pay more and had to show proof of the our 1 year old cashed check before they would sign off. Good luck if you paid cash. Same problems as 2 friends as well, this is how they work. Typically 1 week between email communication if at all. They don't answer the phone ever. If they are your only choice then pay after completing, not before. No issues with the in person class or the driver's, just behind the wheel scheduling and payment.
Fantastic experience: I had a wonderful experience with my behind the wheel she was very good at explaining what I was doing right and wrong.
Thank you, Ada! Good luck on the test!
Fantastic experience: I just finished my 2nd behind the wheel with Jordyn and it was great! She is a very nice instructor, I felt very comfortable driving around with her.
Thank you, Scarlett! We are so lucky to have her!
Fantastic experience: super fun
Fantastic experience: I love LOVE how much my kids enjoyed the instruction from the owner! She made my kids feel comfortable and welcome each time! They learned a lot and feel good about driving. Today was my son’s final behind the wheel and he is ready for the test! I would recommend this driving school to any family with kids wanting to get their license or even those who are reluctant. Thank you so much!
Thank you! We appreciate it!
Negative experience: The instructor cancelled our final lesson on short notice on two occasions. Our first appointment was cancelled, and we were told she would reach out to us to reschedule, nobody contacted us. I had to make contact and were offered a time slot on a Saturday. The owner/driver then cancelled on us 1 hour prior to the rescheduled lesson. Again, they did not offer a reschedule. My son's road test was only days away and we finally got them to agree to another rescheduled date by emailing multiple times. The owner was not apologetic, told my son “He was lucky to get in, she had to cancel a nail appointment to take him". What??? They made us drive him to and from the office for the lesson, when the contract said they would pick up and drop off. She also left him standing in a parking lot while he waited to be picked up after his lesson and I found him conversing with a transient from Texas when I arrived to pick him up. None of the lesson confirmation emails detailed the payment options or due dates and after the last lesson they emailed minutes later stating they would charge late fees unless I paid the very next day. I stated my dissatisfaction with the service and disagreement with the late fees and as repercussion the company threatened to rescind the issued white card with the DMV so my son would not be able to take his driving test. Only positive was that my son did like the class instruction.
Hi- we are very sorry about the lessons needing to be rescheduled. I am glad we were able to get him in for the test date. We do apologize for the inconvenience that rescheduling caused.
To address some of your other points, and just to be clear for other potential students, we cannot do all pick up and drop offs from home , it is dependent on where you live and the schedule for the day. The contract does not state that we will do home pick ups. He was also told he was welcome to wait in the classroom as class started right when his lesson ended, at the same location we ended. And, yes- we do require the lessons be paid in full in order to complete the program and issue the white card.
Negative experience: My daughter's behind-the-wheel appointment was cancelled at very short notice because the instructor's car was damaged or something. Then they rescheduled her lesson to a Sunday afternoon, which we accepted. They said they had to reschedule many appointments due to the car incident and had to use weekends as well. My daughter was supposed to meet the instructor at Sunday noon at their office, and the instructor didn't show up. No text. Later we got to know the instructor sent an email to me on the Friday afternoon, mentioning that the instructor would be available either Saturday or Sunday afternoon depending on our preference. However, they unilaterally cancelled her apointment because we didn't reply to the email, which really didn't make sense. We already had the appointment at the time the email said would be available! I argued back, but they didn't seem apologetic about the cancellation. I didn't like their scheduling method and couldn't trust them anymore, so I immediately cancelled all future appointments and requested a refund. I normally don't post a negative review, but I just wanted to say that they crossed the line, and I wouldn't recommend their behind-the-wheel lessons. I still give two stars because their classroom session was OK.
Fantastic experience: As an adult it was difficult to find a driving school in Duluth but they agreed to teach me. Marcie is so kind, positive and encouraging and would go extra mile to teach you. It’s been a great experience so far. I totally recommend this school.
Thank you, Jai! It has been a pleasure working with you! You are improving so quickly!
Negative experience: The driving instructor left my daughter sitting at a quik trip in west end duluth because she had plans at 5 pm. Was texting the whole time while my daughter was driving. When I called to complain the lady on the phone proceeded to laugh at me and my concerns.
Hi - I was the person on the phone - and I did not laugh. I was trying to talk to you but you wouldn't let me and then hung up on me. I'm sorry we couldn't have had a conversation. You daughters lesson was scheduled 2:00 - 4:00, and the instructor waited as long as she could with your daughter. Obviously we would never choose to leave a student. The driver did return within 5 minutes and your daughter had been picked up already.
Negative experience: My daughter took a class in early June and needed to make a day up. On the day we had been given to make it up we still had not received a call or email on how she was to do it, we called and emailed before the day. Here we are July 3rd leaving numerous emails and phone call messages with no response. Meanwhile all her friends from the class already have their permits. $250 for driving bc classes and stuck waiting in limbo to find out what comes next. Something is lacking and it upsets me there isn’t a better way to communicate with these ppl.
I’m sorry for the confusion. Makeup classes do not need to be confirmed ahead of time. It is explained in class that if a student misses a day they should come to any other session on the class number they missed. We will be sure that in the future this is explained more clearly. Thank you for the feedback.
Fantastic experience: Great class and would recomend!
Thank you!
Fantastic experience: Who ever gave the one-star review must be reviewing the incorrect business. It’s impossible that it’s the kind of customer service received. Or it’s a made up review from a competitor, lol!! Northland Driving School is amazing!! So, you’ve got this teen kid, and the last thing they probably want to do in the summer is go to class, right? Well, my teen had never complained once about having to get up and go to a “boring” class. She loved it!! I ask every day how the class is and the response is always FUN!!! Julie is awesome, relatable, funny and engaging and makes learning to drive exciting and fun! My teen came home the first day looking up the apps shared in class and testing herself! We also appreciate the bathroom on-site and air-conditioning. Yep, not everyone offers that. Look into it. Julie is also committed to the 30 hours required for driver’s training. I wouldn’t recommend anywhere else!!!
Fantastic experience: My son did behind the wheel lessons with Northland Driving School. The instructor did an excellent job of preparing him to take his drivers exam. We most appreciate that the instructor was easy to communicate with and flexible with scheduling the lessons. Overall a great experience.
Thank you!
Fantastic experience: We weren't outside for long. It was 74 degrees!! Not even four minutes and she had it all organized to begin with!!
Thanks Hailey!
Fantastic experience: we were only locked out for 6 minutes. It was no big deal and we got it covered!
Fantastic experience: My 16-yo homeschooled son completed his classroom training in three weeks (two make-up days for Lessons #3 and #5) during fall of 2017. He passed his permit exam with 100%! So far, he's done very well on the road with his dad and myself. He hasn't yet taken behind-the-wheel. Really appreciated the ease and flexibility of the owner's "continuous rolling" type class schedule. We had some great post-class conversations on the (long) drives home, so I knew he was really absorbing the instruction. As of Feb 2018, there are 15 glowing reviews on NDS's Facebook page, and the owner posts some helpful articles there too. Stherah's one-star must have been in error.
