The class you registered for started on a Monday and you had the students tested and confirmed for covid on Friday morning. You had the entire weekend to notify but didn't. When question about it, you said you didn't know they had covid till Monday yet later you said you had found out the next day (Saturday). You knew the cancellation requirements because not only did you sign the written contract that stated the policy, I also spoke with you about it via a phone call after business hours prior to you registering. Even after all of that, we still tried to reschedule your child which wasn't convenient for you. We tried messaging with you multiple days at various times after business hours. Threating messages sent to us at 1am stopped our communication. Unfortunately, we do what we can to make people happy but we are a business that books months in advance and can't make space available that isn't there. The required deposit that reserves a spot in a class is to protect the business from being out a total tuition loss for students that no show or spots that we are unable to refill due to late notice. You had two children that you reserved spots for at $200 each. You paid a total of $400 for the deposits.

I wouldn't be able to live with myself if we just passed a student in D.E. and then they killed someone or themselves out here on the roadways.

Anna, when I originally spoke with you months ago about registering your son, I informed you that our summer classes are normally full. I suggested then that your son might be better suited for an afternoon class lasting 4 hours a day for 9 days. Class sizes are normally smaller and wouldn't require your son to be in class all day. You decided to put him in a summer class anyway for your convenience. I told you then that I was willing to work with your son and how our classes work. We discussed how we use powerpoints and videos along with giving students information straight out of the NC DMV Handbook. You stated that your son was not good at taking notes and writing. I informed you then that we allow students to underline or highlight in their books and don't do a lot of handwritten notes. We discussed that your son would be required to take and pass written test with an 80 or better. I explained that everything on the test is covered in class and which time you stated that your son may possibly get up during class, walk around, not make eye contact but would be listening.
The first morning of class, your mother brought your son and finished registration and payment. A contract was signed stating no refund once services are rendered. During the first days class, the students took a road signs test which your son did not even attempt to complete. He turned in the unfinished test and once I saw it was incomplete, I informed him to see me after lunch. He did not come to see me about his test as instructed. He talked to me in length about prior driving experience he had at camp and what color vans he drove. I believe he was so fixated on driving that he wasn't listening to anything he was instructed to do during any of the classroom portion. At no point did he highlight information in his book as instructed. At the end of the day when your mother (not you) came to pick up your son, I spoke with her one on one, in private, about your sons needs. I informed her that I didn't feel the class was suited for your son due to its size. Even your mother stated that it seemed like there were 20 kids in there. I told your mother that with that many students, I can not give your son the one on one time I believe he needed. She informed me she would pass on the information to you. I gave your mother one of our brochures (including email address which I pointed out) with a business card stapled to the front. I informed her that i would not be at the office overnight to answer the phone but that if you would email me, it would come straight to my cell phone. At that point your son interrupted to talk about what vehicles we use for driving. I told her I thought your son was so fixated on driving but that I was concerned about getting him through the written tests. She took the brochure/card and informed me she would pass on the information to you. I heard nothing from anyone overnight.
The morning of day 2, I was glad to see you had come with your son since I had not heard from you. You informed me you had called at which point I asked did you not get the information about emailing me. When we went up to my office to speak in private, I told you that I didn't feel like the class (due to its size) was suited for your son. I offered to let you pull him out of class (free of charge) and come back to a class later that was smaller without having to repay tuition.You said you didn't want to pull him out because he had been looking forward to it all summer and that you didn't care if you had to pay for him to come back and take it again. I told you I believed he would fail the test he had that day especially since you had informed me he didn't take his book home to study. You insisted on leaving him in class after I told you a student only has the one retest and he was having to take his road signs test again to complete it. You still stated you wanted him to stay in this class against our recommendation.

UPDATE: 6/23/18- Tim attended the class offered by The Driving School after calling and leaving a contact number on our answering machine. I believe a lot of people get confused thinking we are one of the public school services. We are privately owned and have been in operation since 1996. Previous Reply: Hello, I personally checked messages this morning and answered phone calls after teaching a Defensive Driving Class. Every message left on the answering machine is documented and if a return number was left, we document the day and time the phone call was returned. Did you call 252-637-0200? The answering machine informs callers of our website. The website has an email link directly to an instructors phone. That is one of the downsides to having a driving school, you have to be out of the office to drive a vehicle. Sorry you had an unpleasant experience. Do you remember what the womans name was so I can address this? We have never had any issues like this before. Normally customers get us confused with driving schools that service the public school system. You contacted The Driving School in New Bern at 252-637-0200?
