Northstar Driving Academy: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Very flexible
Negative experience: Horrible communication and scheduling! Since phone calls don’t work, I have to drive to the office. Google says they’re open but when I drive over there, they’re closed. Then I noticed a sign on their window for students who have classes or drives scheduled, if they show up and nobody is around, they have to wait for 15 min or else they pay the $40 no show fee. That seems like something that shouldn’t be anyone else’s problem but the facility. I’ve heard bad things about the vehicle they use to take students on drives. Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for a place to take drivers ed!
Fantastic experience: Best driving instructor
Fantastic experience: Very good service
Positive experience: They taught me how to drive here in 2022. While its rundown, dirty and a bit shady at times. Its not bad at all!
Negative experience: Unorganized. Poor communication. They rescheduled my daughter’s acknowledge test and we arrived I’m after work and we came the place is closed. No emails no phone calls nothing. Неорганизованный. Плохое общение. Они перенесли подтверждающий тест моей дочери, и мы приехали. Я после работы, и мы пришли, место закрыто, ни каких сообщений , звонков нечего.
Negative experience: I wish I would have seen all the bad reviews about this place before they sucked more than $600 out me. In all fairness, the instructor that my son had was great to him and he learned so much from him. But the organization in this place is horrendous!! To top it off, I have no idea why 3 different occasions I've been told something entirely different than what it is "supposed to be". It was either scheduling or prices. Never did I get a clear answer from anyone on the phone. Are these people on the same page?! Or is the training that screwed up And of course....they make it your fault, so get ready to pay up for "your fault". This is worst example of how to run a business.
Negative experience: Unorganized. Poor communication. Need to send confirmation email for all scheduled drives to student and also parent if parent is the one who signed the contract and paid. Unorganized so you didn't get critical information, confirmations, etc. that end up costing you money. My son did not get the notice that that if you are 15 minutes late or forget your permit that they will charge you for a missed drive and you will have to pay for another one. Would be easy to put that on a confirmation email (if they would send one). Late start to classes without communication. Don't answer their phone or return calls consistently. My son signed up to take a test and we worked our whole schedule around it and when the day finally came, and we arrived they were already full even though he had signed up for it and was not late. He was so disappointed, and I was frustrated because I planned my schedule around driving him there. Another particular drive we were on time to the appointment, but my son realized once we arrived that he had forgotten his permit (yes his fault) however the front desk knew I was going to rush home to get his permit and that I might be a few minutes over and when I got back, they were unhelpful and would not let my son drive even though the instructor was in the restroom for an extended period of time, and we were waiting for him to finish, this forced us to pay for another drive while the instructor happily went back to his computer without any compassion. My son thought all of the drivers did a nice job when in the car with him so there was that but everything else was so bad.
Thank you for leaving a review! We do apologize for the unsatisfactory communication as that is something we are striving to better for everyone. As a small business, we are often understaffed and we try out best to help as many people as we can as we do have a wide range of students. Please be aware, regarding our No Show Fee policy and late policy, these are both discussed during our first class (and repeated throughout other classes) and is stated in our Parent/Student Contract you and your student sign at the start of the class. Please reach out to us via email with more details regarding your exam so we may resolve this issue and make sure it doesn't happen again. Thanks!
Fantastic experience: Splendiferous
Negative experience: They Will cancel last moment and not give you a refund. Don't waste your money on them.
Fantastic experience: Great place for Learning to drive very professionally.
Negative experience: Horrible place they're so unorganized they had my daughter do class (10) 3 xs and kept forgetting they ran outta gas and made her pump it. Another time o we showed up for 1 of the practice test drives and she couldn't do it bc they're car was over heating and not working properly.!!!! If you're going to run a business you should have a SAFE RELIABLE CAR TO DO SO!!!!!
Hi Katie,
We're sorry our education curriculum did not meet your standards. All students under the age of 18 are required to complete every class and make-up any missed classes in order to be course certified. Your daughter missed multiple sessions and had to come in to make up those multiple sessions.
As for our vehicles, maintenence is an on-going part of our business. Filling the gas tank in a vehicle is an important component of maintaining your daughter's own vehicle once she's driving as a liscenced driver on the road.
It is very important that student's have an awareness of their own vehicles conditions while driving on the road. If our vehicle overheated during her drive lesson, then this is an opportune learning moment for your daughter to handle an emergency situation on the road with a licensed instructor.
Please feel free to give us a call if you would like to address any of your concerns with a staff member.

Positive experience: Staff are super helpful, friendly, and professional. I appreciated their flexibility in accommodating my son's needs.
Thanks for your feedback Thomas. We’re happy we were able to accommodate your son’s needs in his driver’s education!
Negative experience: Showed up on time for my written exam no one was in the building and there were other people waiting outside. Call the phone number and waited in queue for 20 min without any answer. What a joke of a company
Hi Ilya,
I apologize for the inconvenience. The examiner scheduled for that exam was feeling unwell that morning, in which he reached out to every customer signed up for the exam by phone to cancel. We unfortunately do not have the flexibility of unlimited certified examiners to come and cover an exam. I'm also not seeing that you were signed up for Saturday's knowledge exam, so you would not have received a phone call. If you would like to schedule an exam date/time please email us at [email protected] or give us a phone call.
Negative experience: If I could give this place 0 stars I would!! I just finished taking this class and I regret going here at all. It's extremly unprofessional and its hard to communicate with the staff and on top of that their cars are very dirty.
Negative experience: Yeah I should’ve spent my money elsewhere, hopefully i get a refund.
Positive experience: Roger is a great teacher
Fantastic experience: My daughter took her knowledge test here in Federal Way. They made her feel very relaxed and comfortable. She was able to complete the test with ease. I will definitely recommend this location to others.
Fantastic experience: Roger funny n chill
Fantastic experience: I would recommend this place for driving school, they have a great instructor in Roger, who’s fun and exciting! Also a great and cheap place to take the knowledge test!
Negative experience: Had an appointment at 2pm on Saturday so had to take off work just to go to the appointment and the business was not open. 15 people waiting outside for about an hour before people gave up and went home. This place owes me more than just a refund, it owes me my time missed work
Positive experience: I failed the knowledge test the first time but passed by 93% in the second attempt after two weeks. A week later i passed the driver's skills test and got my license from DMV.
Negative experience: I wasted so much money on this driving school and did not learn not one thing , the guy was very boring and didn’t seem to care much about his students . The staff were nice but they didn’t know what they were doing ! Do not recommend
Fantastic experience: Roger and Ms.Smith are very friendly. They will teach you how to properly drive safely on the road.
Negative experience: Don't bother. Go somewhere else to take the driving test. They fail you by one point so you can waste your money to drive there again. If you fail one thing on the test, it's over.
Negative experience: Just sloppy, take your money elsewhere.
Hello Leo, thanks for your feedback. We apologize our efforts didn’t meet your expectations. Please get in touch with us if you would like to address any issue you found during our service/s with you.
Negative experience: My daughter took the written test there and after learning for few months how to drive I took her for the driving test. They failed her on the driving test by one point. Then I signed her with the North Star for full instruction classes. After taking the school they failed her again and said that she need to pay for extra driving lessons. Then she practiced driving with us again and she was able to drive fine. Then she took the test again with the same examiner who failed her again with 6 points and said that she didn't practiced any driving since her previous test. We practiced with her every day. One of the complaints was that she drove too slow?! She got the test results with a lot of codes and abbreviations very hard to understand. Don't waist your time and money.
Negative experience: Horrible instructions. It used to be much more efficient in teaching people how to drive before they took over the previous instructor (OJ). Just slab down not passing and dont even properly inform the driver and family members on how to improve and practice with said driver for next test drive. Will not be taking anymore classes/drives from this location.
Positive experience: Good driving school.
