We offer small classes (8 students max) for kids and adults. This is a great place to start if you want to learn to ride a motorcycle. MUCH less risk in learning on a lightweight dirtbike on grass instead of a tarmac parking lot!
We provide the bike, helmet, elbow/shin+knee protection!
DC Dirt Camp offers several levels of training:
New Rider Level 1
Beyond Basics Level 2
Clutch Capable Level 3 (if you already ride street but want to try dirt or as a suggested class prior to Adventure bike training)
Intro to Adv (BYO big bike)
Advance Adv (BYO big bike for multi-day training)

DC Dirt Camp: Reviews
Fantastic experience: I have had the pleasure of attending two classes in the last 30 days. The first was the basic dirt bike class, and yesterday I took the Adv bike class (on my bike). I have learned so much from these classes, and will now focus on practice what I have learned. The location and coaches provided the right amount of challenging drills to develop the skills for off road riding.
Fantastic experience: Fun and a little wet; wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Fantastic experience: BJ does a great job of teaching the fundamentals of dirt bike riding. I took the Level 2 course and it provided the training I needed to improve my skills. BJ works through a skill building process from the beginning to keep everyone challenged. It was a lot of fun and a lot of work.
Hope to see you for a Level 3 class soon Brian! Thanks for choosing DC Dirt Camp for your moto training!
Fantastic experience: DC Dirt was a great time. I’ve take the Clutch Capable class twice now. What I really love about this school is how riding dirt is brocken down into the basic fundamentals. As class progresses, you build on and combine those fundamentals into sound riding principles. After taking these classes, I feel way more comfortable/confident in myself riding on dirt. BJ is an excellent instructor who can teach sound fundamentals, but at the same time, use real world examples of why and how they’re used.
im so glad to read this review Tom. It's always my goal to make sure even students who have come through my program before get their money's worth out of the training. I'm so glad you are open to learning and that you chose my school for your continued training! Hope we see you again for an adventure class or that you join us on some of our upcoming "Away Events" where we will put those fundamentals to practice in the wild!
Fantastic experience: The DC Dirt Camp has a very cool vibe. Completely exceeded my expectations. Had an awesome time learning new skills from very cool, highly skilled instructors. Looking forward to taking more classes.
Looking forward to having you back and pushing your skills further. Maybe we'll even get you guys out on the trails at one of our upcoming "Away Events" this season!
Fantastic experience: Recently attended DC Dirt Camp intro to ADV Class at the Chilly Willy Rally in North Carolina. BJ Hessler and Greg are Awesome Instructors. The skills taught helped me immensely. I have ridden for years and recently started ADV riding. Thank You BJ and Greg for keeping me on the bike!!! And also, for teaching me how to get the bike back up when I don't!!! It is a Great Class with a wealth of information. I strongly recommend the class, the school and mostly the instructors.
Come on up to our farm in VA and we'll push you even more! (Or we'll see you at Chilly Willy for some more technical "little bike" trail training this December 2025
Fantastic experience: I took DC Dirt Camp's Level 3 "Clutch-Capable" course in late April of 2024 and absolutely loved it! I've been riding motorcycles since 2003, but never off-road. A friend of mine recently invited me to go on a long, rather difficult off-road motorcycle adventure, and I needed to learn to ride off-road to not be the weakest link. I took the class at DC Dirt Camp's property in April and followed it up with a day class up in Pennsylvania when DC Dirt Camp hosted some classes as part of the Allegheny Jamboree Powersports Rally. Both of those classes combined really set me up for success. I rode the North East Backcountry Discovery Route in August (including EXPERT detours) and had a blast. If I hadn't trained with BJ and her crew, it would have been MUCH different. I've now caught the bug and am constantly planning my next ride and adventure. If you don't want to get hooked on off-road riding, don't take their courses! However, if you are looking for welcoming, skilled, and fun instructors and a new, adventurous hobby, DO IT!
Congrats on the NEBDR Brian! I'm delighted to hear we gave you the foundation you needed. Hopefully we'll get to play in the woods again sometime in 2025!!
Fantastic experience: Amazing place, Im 14 and they gave me a 250cc which felt just right. Coaches were amazing and funny, track was good, overall good place!
So glad you enjoyed the class. We do our best to match up each rider with the right bike for their height, weight, and skill level. Hope you come back for more advanced training before you forget any of the basics!
Fantastic experience: Great class with excellent instruction. Super fun for me and my son.
Fantastic experience: I attended the Clutch Capable class on November 1, 2024. It was a perfect day and BJ provided an excellent venue and training. The training was enjoyable and well planned for any level. I enjoyed and appreciated all of the helpful hints to improve my riding. I look forward to participating in future classes. The use of the in-helmet Cardo communication systems for each rider made for a great opportunity to receive immediate feedback and support.
So glad you liked the training Andy. Hope we see you for an Adv class this spring or maybe even join us on the trails at an "Away Event" this summer!
Fantastic experience: I was blown away by the quality of the coaching and the thought behind the curriculum. This might be the best value in off-road rider training!
Thanks so much Jonathan. Hopefully we'll get to ride together soon!
Fantastic experience: My day-long experience with BJ at DC Dirt Camp yesterday was outstanding, being for me a refamiliarization with off road biking after decades away from riding. Her passion and enthusiasm for the sport was infectious, making for a fun environment in which to learn. The instruction provided was superb, with information shared incrementally, and as the class was able to absorb it. This was mixed with hands-on riding, through a variety of progressively challenging and helpful exercises. Breaks along the way for water and to take in what we were processing were well-timed so that we never felt like we were taking on too much at once. We were challenged to grow only as quickly as we felt comfortable. I highly recommend the overall experience to both the novice and those with riding experience looking to progress their skills due to the solid program and support offered.
Thank you for your thoughtful review. It's great to hear this kind of feedback. It was a pleasure having you in class!
Negative experience: An email prompted me to leave a review so here it is. I took BJs class in November of 2022 and I agree with Pearls comment. At the time, I had only ridden 10 times and had recently passed the motorcycle endorsement class, BJ told me negative things such as “a car will run over my head” and “now that you dropped the bike you will keep dropping it”. 2 years later I have taken other classes and ridden with other groups and friends who are way more positive. To this day I still do not recommend BJ or her camp.
I'm glad to hear you are still alive and riding And have found some other coaches with whom you can resonate.
I responded when you posted a negative review last year already, so I won't address your concerns again. I'm not sure what has prompted you to leave this review again years after you've taken the class.
Sorry you didn't get What you wanted out of our training. We do our best and have thousands of happy and safe customers. But like any business, we obviously cannot please everyone. Best of luck on your Moto journey!
Fantastic experience: DC Dirt Camp was the perfect introduction to off road motorcycles for my 12 year old son and me. The instruction, location and vibe were superlative. BJ and her team take a crawl-walk-run approach that emphasizes control and bike handling skills ON the bike. It was a long day of riding that progressed through skills quickly enough to keep fast learners engaged while never leaving anyone behind. We're looking forward to Level 2!
So excited to read this review. We tried really hard to cater to all the students in a particular day's class. So that's why we keep them small. But it's still a tough job giving everybody personal attention, challenges and support. I'm so glad you felt our efforts! Can't wait to have you in level two!
Fantastic experience: Outstanding instruction, great equipment, nice grounds. I could have stayed here for a whole week and hung out with owner BJ and instructors Cat and Justin.
Awwww. Thank you so much Scott. It was a pleasure to have you in class and we look forward to hosting again! If you are into camping, you'd be welcome to stay the night before or after your next class! As the weather gets better we'll try to do s'mores!
Fantastic experience: BJ did a great job instilling us with confidence in off-road basics without needing to bring our own bikes and be worried about dropping them. Absolutely recommend for anyone interested!
I'm so glad you guys left with the confidence you were seeking. It was awesome working with both of you!
Fantastic experience: Absolutely awesome experience! BJ and her crew at DC dirt Camp are top notch! They take the stress out of not knowing how to ride immediately and teach you with calm, confident instruction! If you are looking at a perfect motocycle intro and absolutely fun class then look no further! Hats off! Can’t wait to take the level 2 course!
So glad you decided to join your kid and take the level one class together. Families that play together, stay together! Looking forward to seeing you at the next one!
Fantastic experience: BJ is an amazing coach. I was a street bike rider for 10 years before discovering her dirt bike training camp and I feel much more confident taking my F750GS off pavement. I highly recommend for anyone considering off pavement riding.
Thank you so much Alex. It was fantastic to have you in class and I'm so excited to have you back on your big bike for the adventure class this fall!
Fantastic experience: Jarvis was the best assistant instructor for those not-riding.
We barely lucked out with such a charming and personable mascot! Glad you enjoyed his moral support!
Fantastic experience: Great facility. Well maintained grounds and bikes. The coaches here know how to help new riders and communicate effectively. The head instructor is really awesome and laid back. Highly recommended!
Shux... thanks Fox. I'm glad I at least seemed laid back. Behind the scenes to run this school, I am far from it. But we work hard to make it a fun, informal, friendly training that builds camaraderie as well as skills!
Fantastic experience: I recently took a "level 3 clutch capable" course at DC Dirt Camp and had an amazing experience. This was my first time on a dirt bike, and I am hooked! BJ and the team put on a great course that challenges riders and helps build their confidence and skills in a safe and supportive environment. I will definitely be back for additional training. We are so fortunate to have this great resource nearby. I strongly recommend DC Dirt Camp to anyone interested in learning to ride a dirt bike, or to expand their skillset and confidence. Go check them out!
Wow. Thanks for the glowing review Frank! W hopefully we'll see you on the trail on your bike sometime soon!
Fantastic experience: I highly recommend the DC Dirt Camp ADV rider's course to anyone getting into Adventure Riding or who has a new Adventure bike. The instructors were very professional and patient with the students. The course itself was just great with a mix of terrain and skills areas. It was super hot the day I took their training and the staff was very good about keeping safety in the heat in mind. Great Course!
It was great working with you Dean! Your grit and determination was delightful!
Fantastic experience: Great experience. Learned a lot Great value for the money. Excellent instructors, who can explain & demonstrate each skill.
Thanks for the feedback. We try to keep our prices as low as possible, but it's obviously a very high overhead business. We try to make sure we deliver incredible value for your $298
Fantastic experience: Awesome experience! The Clutch Capable class was well-designed to build progressively on concepts and skills and get more comfortable and confident as the day went on. BJ has a clear method that works, tons of patience, and a wicked sense of humor. Highly recommend, and I'd do it again.
So glad we hit the mark Andrew. Thanks for coming out to play and learn with us!
Fantastic experience: First, when I got there I was welcomed and knew this was going to be an amazing experience and it was. There is some much I learned, and was able to do. The coaches are very nice and they help you with anything you need. The bikes are nice and clean. They give you the equipment you need like knee pads etc. The two days I was there were the best two days of my life, and I can't wait to go back!! A Gubartalla
Wow! What a review! Thanks so much. We're glad we could get you started on your moto journey! See you again this fall (we hope!) And stay tuned to our newsletters and website for winter bike maintenance clinics!
Fantastic experience: Great experience and great instruction. Not only did I have fun but my daughter and I now feel much more confident on a dirt bike!
Woohooo! Nothing better than watching a dad and daughter bonding over bikes!
Fantastic experience: Great class to find out what you don’t know and what you need to ride in the dirt. At age 75 wanted to try ADV riding and after 50+ years on the street knew I needed help. It was a humbling experience, so glad I tried. BJ shows and gives examples of how to handle the bike she provides. She gave the tools for me to go practice to improve. Thanks BJ and crew! As BJ said, helmet hair don’t care, lol.
Dude! Give yourself more credit! You had fantastic form, and athleticism in class! And I don't qualify that statement with "for your age"... Just flat out, great rider. Now- get a hold of that clutch!
Fantastic experience: DC Dirt Camp is AMAZING! BJ Hessler’s coaching and style is one of a kind. I went from a green first timer to standing up and ripping trails- gaining confidence and staying safe with BJ and her assistant’s expertise/patience. Can’t wait to check back on the website to schedule a Class II session. I’m hooked. One down, Four up - THANK YOU DC Dirt Camp and BJ!
Not sure our little maze in the hay counts as "trails" per se... but you certainly took your skills from zero to hero in just one day! So glad we could be the school that got you hooked! See you back again soon!
Fantastic experience: Training was excellent. Class was small enough for a personalized experience but laid back enough to feel like more fun than training.
Thanks for the positive review. We try to make sure everyone learns, but we firmly believe that apart from safety, FUN is number one!
Fantastic experience: BJ is an excellent instructor who challenges you while making the training fun. Her new training location is awesome, her bikes and equipment are top-notch and rider safety is stressed throughout the learning process. I also recommend staying at her airbnb unit on-site.....it's a great space for a single or a family. You can cook there or ride the back roads into town.
Thanks so much Alan! Though we have renters until October at the Airbnb, we welcome you to come back and test out your moto camping set up!
Fantastic experience: I’ve been riding all types of bikes from Honda Trail 90 to a Goldwing for over 50 years. Never had any lessons and just road as it felt. I’m starting to do some adventure riding and thought it would be good to know better technique and confirm whether what I was doing was the better way. The camp helped me evaluate my skills and taught me to think more about position and balance. Now the challenge is to put this to practice and correct bad habits.
It was a joy having you in class Mike! So glad you gave training a chance. You're an inspiration to us all
Fantastic experience: I've been street riding for a little over 4 years and decided to take the Level 3 clutch capable class and what a great choice that was! BJ and her assistants were great and I feel like a better rider for having taken her course. BJ really knows her stuff and is a skilled and patient instructor. You can tell she loves what she does and makes the class extremely enjoyable. This was a great intro to trail/dirt bike riding and I feel infinitely more comfortable on dirt now than I did before taking the class. The only downside is that now I want to buy another bike!
I'm so glad we were able to be your gateway drug into another form of riding! Welcome to the club!!
Fantastic experience: I have been riding for 40 years and learned a lot through the ADV class. Excellent, knowledgeable, passionate staff/riders. Beautiful location! The owner/BJ also has a an amazing Airbnb onsite.
Awesome to hear that even with so much experience we were able to teach some new things!
Fantastic experience: I have long wanted to take a DC Dirt Camp class but could never get my schedule to match up. Today I attended the Adv Class. I am sorry I waited so long. We had 4 coaches and 9 students. All the coaches were outstanding and provided individual attention and advice for each exercise. The facility is incredible with differing terrain, obstacles, and challenging trails. I am looking forward to the next class I can take. But that was not all. There was a free seminar on packing for adventure travel and a movie later in the evening (Moto related of course). A full day of fun and learning for an incredibly affordable price.
Thank you James. I'm glad you had the time to come spend the day with us, and that even for a super accomplished rider, we made it worth your time and $.
Fantastic experience: I had a great experience at DC Dirt Camp. BJ and her team were great. The class size was small and we had a ton of ride time. As a taller rider, it was also great that they had an appropriate sized bike for me. I highly recommend the Dirt level 3 class and plan on returning for the ADV class.
Thank you so much Greg. Glad you found it helpful!
Fantastic experience: That was awesome ! BJ and the crew are really nice and DC Dirt Camp is so friendly. The cost of "Clutch Capable level 3 " is fair. I'm so glad we have DC Dirt Camp in Northern Virginia. I recommend this class and I'll take other classes later.
Thanks for the feedback. We wrestle with pricing cuz the margin is very small but I firmly believe the world would be a better place if everybody could play on bikes
Fantastic experience: With just 24h notice I enrolled for a Level 3 course. It was a great excuse not to spend too much time with family over Thanksgiving weekend. Never having spent much time off road and am keen to improve my skills in a effort to avoid coming off the bike too frequently, so when this opportunity turned up, I jumped at it. Having attended quite a few track day events, both coached and not, I sort of knew what to expect, however, I never expected the personalised attention and enthusiasm that was presented by BJ and her team. From the basics of simple bike operation, to riding on hill sides it was clear that she knew her stuff and shared her knowledge and techniques easily and without making making us feel incompetent. BJ's approach was always positive and encouraging which allowed me to push the envelope when I was comfortable to do so and also allowed me to do the drills at my own pace until I was confident enough to pick up the pace. I leant more than expected in a one day course and honestly cannot wait to do another. DC Dirt Camp was a great experience and training opportunity, and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. First class outfit.
Wow! Thank you so much for the kudos and I'm so glad we could impress even a lifelong learner like you!
Fantastic experience: I took the level 2 class and had an amazing experience! I recently finished the MSF beginner rider course to get a motorcycle license, and I'm a total beginner with dirt bikes. BJ and her staff provided excellent instruction and guidance, and I feel a lot more confident about using the clutch, shifting gears, and making turns now. The class was a lot of fun, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in getting experience riding off-road and learning about the technique involved.
Glad you enjoyed the class. Thanks for coming out!
Fantastic experience: Had an amazing experience at DC Dirt Camp. BJ, KJ and Matt were all fantastic instructors who were very patient with a new rider like myself. Would highly recommend if you are looking to have some fun and learn a cool skill!
Never too old to learn new tricks! Glad you were able to challenge yourself with us!
Fantastic experience: I took the Dirt (level 3) class and the ADV class consecutively (one on Friday, one on Saturday) and went from completely uncomfortable with taking my ADV bike off-road to now feeling pretty confident with doing some light trails. A lot of focus on good fundamentals and a fun and engaging coaching style that made the class really enjoyable.
Thank you for the positive feedback
Fantastic experience: My family had an amazing experience with DC Dirt Camp. Incredible way to enjoy a day off. Will definitely recommend to friends. Thanks BJ!!!
Such a cool way for your kid to spend his birthday! Thanks for getting the family out to train with us!
Fantastic experience: DC Dirt Camp was an amazing experience! Instructors were knowledgeable, professional & down to earth. Owner is Incredible at describing techniques & positioning. All communicated clearly & and were efficient. By the end of the day I felt like I gained a ton of knowledge. I know I’ll be able to build on the skills I was taught. The small class size & fabulous outdoor space was a perfect environment for learning.
Hey Karrie, Thanks for the rave and descriptive review! We hope to see you back again this fall for another class, or when you're ready- join us on a tour!
Fantastic experience: My 13 year-old son has been wanting to learn how to dirt bike for years and I'm SO glad I found the DC Dirt Camp. It exceeded my hopes and expectations, especially since it was his birthday present! BJ and her coaches are knowledgeable, encouraging and disciplined. They know how to teach both the mechanical and mental skills, and that's a hard combo to teach. Good news/bad news -- by lunch time, my son was already asking when we could sign up for the next level ;)
It's so awesome seeing young kids get stoked on dirt bikes... At least you know this means, he will never have money for drugs! Hope you can come back and see us soon. We would love to help continue your son's moto journey!
Fantastic experience: Things you'll get in the beginner class: - Bikes will be provided, and they are in good shape - Helmets and MX armor is provided. All you need to do is show up dressed for the weather, wearing long pants, long sleeves, and hiking boots. It's fine to bring street riding gear. - You'll be given some free swag from the school (we got neck gaiters and stickers) - The instructors will actually take photos and videos while you're on the bike to give some coaching tips on form, and let you hang on to them after the class. Some things to think about: - It might seem like the class is short for a 1 day (9a - 3p), but riding in the dirt is a physically demanding activity. The sign up recommendations you receive about bringing 3L of water and taking frequent breaks should be heeded! No one in our beginner cohort had the energy to ride past 3pm. - The class is a pretty steep learning curve. It is geared towards people that have never ridden motorcycles, but I have a suggestion. I watched some YouTube videos on the topic in advance which was very helpful. Pay special attention to topics on emergency braking and weight transfer, as well as braking while cornering (don't). - We were given some handouts after class that pointed us to local areas to continue our training, and I chatted with the instructors afterwards to get some ideas of where to buy upgraded parts for my bike. Other points: - One of the Sr. instructors was a young guy (12?). It might raise a few eyebrows, but don't worry. He's an awesome instructor that gives great feedback. He knows his stuff, and the dirt bike seems like a natural extension of him. - The beginner curriculum is based off an MSF off road curriculum. If you're already familiar and comfortable starting, shifting/downshifting, standing on the pegs while riding, and have decent slow speed control in off road environments, you might want to email the school and ask about starting above 'level 1'. - I don't know of any other dirt bike schools like this near where I live. This is, as of today, really rare, and really cool training. If you've ever been interested, support this unique project!
Wow! Thank you so much for the thorough of review. I hope this really helps. Other people decide to come pay us a visit before the season is over! I hope we will see you in class again soon too! So much fun working with you!
Fantastic experience: I spent two days at DC Dirt Camp, first for the Clutch Capable course then for the Intro to Adv. I'm a fairly experienced road rider but I found the courses to be worthwhile and challenging, each in their own way. The coursework was well planned, and BJ and her instructors were all highly knowledgeable and very skilled. They were also kind and encouraging, which was super helpful at the times when I was struggling with the techniques we were learning. I'd highly recommend this organization and it's classes to anyone interested in learning to ride or who just wants to better their skills regardless of how many years they've been on a bike, and especially if you want to move off road.
Thanks for the kind words Lisa. I'm so glad to have your perspective. It was great having you in class
Fantastic experience: I am new to Off Road/ADV Bike riding and wanted to have some training. DC Dirt Camp was the perfect place for me to go. Great class size, expert instruction and a great facility to ride around and through. Thanks, BJ! I for sure will be back for fine tuning!
I'm so glad we fit the bill. Paul. It was so fun working with you and your spirit as a learner was infectious to the whole group. Hope we see you again!
Fantastic experience: Very useful class, enough a group size to make it fun but small enough that we could still get individualized coaching. Plenty of different environments to practice on: sand, hills of various grades, tight turns in a grass course, various grains of gravel etc. Well worth the weekend!
I hope you'll come back and work with us again. It was wonderful seeing your progress over the two days!
Fantastic experience: What an amazing experience it was! I gained an abundance of knowledge and left with newfound skills I never imagined I possessed. I want to express my gratitude for the continuous support consistently valuable feedback. Highly recommend!!
Thank you Henry. I'm really glad to hear that we nailed it!
Fantastic experience: Great experience! The staff knowledgeable and friendly, and we really had a good time!
It's wonderful getting people started on their moto journey. Thanks so much for the support!
Fantastic experience: Very helpful and professional. And lots of fun. Will come back
We're going to hold you to that John! Last adventure class of the year is November 18th 2023
Fantastic experience: Excellent instruction in basic techniques. BJ provides challenge and encouragement for each rider according to his/her skill level and interest. What a fun day!
It was awesome having you in class swapping stories! So glad you got so much out of the course. It's intimidating, teaching such an accomplished Rider
Fantastic experience: So much fun! BJ and the other instructors will push you and encourage you - you will learn a ton in a day and gain confidence to ride. These folks are experts!
Thanks for your perspective Patrick. I'm really glad to hear you got what you came for!
Fantastic experience: Two words: Do It! Great experience and thoughtful, well planned curriculum/teaching. Super fun to boot!
Thanks for the awesome feedback. We hope we'll see you again before the seasons out!
Fantastic experience: We had a great time at DC Dirt Camp! The Beginner Rider class was so informative and fun. I would HIGHLY recommend this class for anyone interested in learning to ride dirt bikes. I appreciated that all of the equipment was provided and clean.
So glad you enjoyed it Jennifer! Thanks for the great review. We hope more people will get started on their moto journey with us!
Fantastic experience: DC dirt camp was such a great experience for getting into dirt bikes. I've always been a road rider and had some challenges getting the weight transfers needed for off road riding, but BJ and her team were fantastic instructors and got me from being really nervous thinking I was going to fall all the time to confidently riding the property, going through sand, and hitting hills. I wouldn't claim to be an expert after 1 class but if one day can exponentially raise my ability and confidence that much, I would love to see what some more seat time will get me.
I'm so happy to hear it! We did so well for you. We have plenty of level two classes coming up before the season is over!
Fantastic experience: Fantastic experience! We took our sons, 16 and 12 years old, to DC Dirt Camp this weekend and they had a great time. BJ and her team are wonderful instructors. Our boys had no dirt biking experience, but the class provided them with the core skills and personalized instruction each step of the way. We will definitely go back for additional classes. Thanks for a great introduction to dirt biking!
So glad to hear the approval of parents! Kids are too easy to impress... And we really thrive on this kind of feedback. Plenty of level two classes coming up before the year is out!
Fantastic experience: Great Experience, It was alot easier than I thought it was gonna be and. Amazing, and very nice instructors. Definitely coming back.
I'm so glad to hear you had a good time. We're working on building some more difficult training areas on the property so hope you will come back!
Fantastic experience: "I've been riding street bikes for years, but have recently wanted to learn how to ride off-road. I was a little nervous about taking an off-road riding class, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I learned at DC Dirt Camp. The instructors, BJ and Matt, were patient and knowledgeable, and they took the time to explain each technique in detail. They also gave me plenty of opportunities to practice, so I felt confident by the end of the day. I learned a lot about body positioning, braking, and how to handle different types of terrain. I also learned how to avoid common mistakes that new off-road riders make. I'm so glad I took the class at DC Dirt Camp. It was a great experience, and I'm now confident that I can ride off-road safely and enjoyably. I can't wait to go back and do their ADV class. I would highly recommend DC Dirt Camp to anyone who wants to learn how to ride off-road. The instructors are top-notch, and the facilities are excellent. I had a great time, and I learned a lot."
Thanks Mike! You were a pleasure to work with and took instruction so well. I'm glad we met your objectives! See you in the Adv class soon I hope!
Fantastic experience: I'm an experienced street rider, have never really wanted to ride dirt bikes, but new skills are good, so I signed up. Plus there is the best cat there! Had to tap out on some of the riding due to the riding position not agreeing with where the scaring on my lungs is, but still learned some super useful low speed riding skills. BJ knows what she is doing, and trusts students to know what their limitations are (very useful, as I'm almost 60). The structure of the lessons will be familiar to anyone who is familiar with MSF courses. You learn a skill, then another skill that builds on that, put them together to learn a third skill, and so on. The bikes are well-maintained and safety gear is available to borrow if needed. I watched the assistant instructor (a young teen who definitely knew what he was doing - it was a delight to watch him teaching and learning) clean them after use. While there is a lot to learn, the pace is relaxed but always moving forward. I learned that dirt bikes aren't for me (useful in and of itself), but also learned low speed skills I can transfer to my street bike and some entirely different ways of thinking about using my body with my bike. I'm going to be chewing on this and practising on my street bike for some time to come. So, despite still having no desire to ride off road, the class was more than worth the time and money for what I learned. Plus it was fun, and Jasper (I think, I focused more on petting him than on his name) the cat is awesome. There is a pretty good BBQ down the road a few miles for after class.
It was a delight to have you in class Lissa! I was so glad you honored your body and also stuck around to keep learning and growing. You were a great addition to the group and Jarvis (kitty) was sad to see you go!
Keep up the great work!
Fantastic experience: Can’t say enough good things about BJ and DC Dirt Camp. I took the Level 3 class with over twenty years of road experience and cannot believe how much I learned in a fun, encouraging-yet-challenging setting. BJ is an excellent instructor with the gift to teach, inspire and push our comfort zones without judgement. Each class participant “rode their ride” and I have no doubt came away a better rider than when they started. Looking forward to taking more classes at DC Dirt Camp!
Thanks for the fantastic feedback Christine. I'm so glad you had such a positive experience with us. Looking forward to having you back again soon!
Fantastic experience: Such a great experience! I highly recommend for anyone getting back on the bike or starting for the first time. BJ & her group of instructors were great and the day flew by. I will be back!
So glad we hit the mark Nikki!
Fantastic experience: Amazing school. I took one of the dirt bike classes and came back for the Intro to Adventure Riding Class once I had my own bike. Both times I had a blast. The classes are challenging, but extremely helpful and rewarding. BJ and her team not only know their stuff, they are also incredibly patient and supportive. Their energy and enthusiasm is contagious. Highly recommend for anyone looking to get into dirt/adventure riding or looking to finetune their skills!
Thanks so much Karin. It was great having you back in class and seeing you handle the big bike so gracefully!
Fantastic experience: BJ runs an awesome dirt bike program - super knowledgeable and friendly, I took a private lesson and cannot say enough good things about it - from instruction to bikes to facility. Highly recommend!
It was great working 1:1 with you. Keeping a "student mindset" is so important for all of us and you showed me that.
Fantastic experience: Started with a 1x day starter for my 12 year old, ended up taking the level 2 with him the next day, great facility, great instruction, highly recommend to anyone who will be riding a motorcycle
Awesome thanks Mike! I'm glad we were able to challenge you enough to make it worth your while joining your kiddo for the little two. Thanks for the great review!
Fantastic experience: Best instructor! Love every second of it! Definitely learned a lot and will be doing it again!
So glad to hear it Jacob. It was awesome working with you Hope to see you again in the fall!
Fantastic experience: DC Dirt Camp was a fantastic experience. B.J. and her team were all excellent teachers, including the venerable "Mighty" Matt (my added moniker for him). The bikes and gear were all in impeccable condition and there was a clear focus on safety and fundamentals. B.J.'s teaching teaching style is straightforward, low key, and accessible. I highly recommend the DC Dirt Camp to anyone new to motorcycling or looking to toward getting off the streets and into the dirt. My only regret is not having taken the course (level III) sooner! I am already looking forward to the next time!
Thanks so much Alan! It was great having you in class. I really appreciate the kind words.
BJH
Fantastic experience: Professional, personable, fun and challenging. I will recommend DC Dirt Camp to anyone looking to improve their off-road game, whether on dual sports or big ADV bikes. I plan on going back for more training in the future.
Thanks Christophe! It was great having you in class and we look forward to riding with you in the future!
Fantastic experience: The level 3 clutch capable class is exactly what I needed and wanted as a street rider to begin a confident transition to dirt! Thanks DC Dirt Camp! See you next time. :)
Thanks for making the journey to come train with us and be our beta-tester for the hammock camping! Hope to see you again soon, if not out on the trails!
Fantastic experience: Outstanding class! I’ve been street riding over 10 years and the “clutch capable” class provided great instruction with challenging, achievable exercises. I learned waaaay more than I was expecting. BJ (owner) and KJ are a great pair of instructors with tons of real world experience. The location is convenient to NOVA and absolutely beautiful. The price was very reasonable and the class size small enough to have an instructor for every three students. The provided motorcycles were well-maintained and varied enough to allow me a full-sized bike that fit my height. I borrowed some safety gear that was also in great shape. This is a great value and I’m definitely going again!
Thank you for the wonderful, detailed review. So glad to hear that we exceeded your expectations!
Fantastic experience: Great experience love it!
Thanks Karen. So grateful to have your support!
Fantastic experience: DC Dirt Camp Level 1 new rider class is a great adventure. Teacher, BJ and her staff are over and above board on being welcoming, friendly, encouraging, and helpful in all aspects of the class. I was the only Senior, 70, in attendance, with the youngest being 12. At any step in the learning process where I had Fear, or was taking longer than others to learn a skill I was encouraged every step of the way, always with positivity and a "go, go, go, you can do this attitude." At one point one of the coaches even ran alongside me coaxing me to go faster to be able to shift into 2nd gear. Prior to that when I was afraid to go fast enough to put my feet up on the pegs he rode on my bike behind me going fast enough for me to do so showing me what it felt like and that going faster was safer and more safe than the slow, almost stalling speed. The class allowed me to reach a goal of learning to ride a motorcycle and get enough practice to feel confident and comfortable on a motorcycle to take a class for my motorcycle license. Thank you DC Dirt Camp, BJ, and every one of your wonderful staff, young and not so young for a great adventure and learning experience. I would recommend your place to anyone wishing to learn how to ride a motorcycle on the safety of grass and dirt vs asphalt and most especially if you want to explore the excitement of dirt bike riding and adventures. Carol S. April, 2023
Wow! Thank you for such a thorough and heartfelt review. It was truly a pleasure getting you moving and safely introduced to to motorcycles! We wish you all the best and hope to see you down the road when you pass that MSF street course with flying colors! Keep the rubber side down Carol!
Fantastic experience: BJ and the coaching team are extremely professional and patient with every rider from my ADHD teen to the adventurous 70 year old that were in class. First rate bikes and safety equipment! We will be back for a whole family class this summer. This is by far the best way to explore whether dirt bikes are you or your family's newest hobby.
Thanks so much Clint! It was great having the your boys in class. I'm glad we (hopefully) got them hooked on bikes!
Fantastic experience: Great teachers, friendly atmosphere and lots of fun.
So glad you enjoyed it Josh. You did great!
Fantastic experience: What a great class and experience for our son! We live in Bethesda and our 12-year-old son has been begging to learn how to ride a dirt bike since last summer. He did his research and found DC dirt camp online. He had zero experience so we signed him up for level I. The location is perfect and an easy drive from DC. The instructors were very welcoming, patient and experienced. They were very eager to share their knowledge and love of the sport with the inexperienced riders. The class was structured in a very practical way, dividing skills into small easy to follow segments allowing the new riders to apply the previous lesson to the next lesson building their confidence along the way. Safety was built in throughout the class. We highly recommend DC Dirt Camp.
Thanks so much Brett. Glad we could give such a great experience to your kiddo! Hopefully we'll see him (and the whole fam?) in another class sometime soon so he doesn't loose what he learned so far.
Negative experience: Not beginner-friendly. Unfortunately, the lead coach got visibly frustrated over my understandable beginner mistakes. She basically gave up on me halfway through class, not for any lack of sincere effort on my part, but because I wasn’t experienced enough to keep up 100% of the time with the rest of the group, emphasizing that she didn’t know what to do if I was “slowing the group down.” It was humiliating. Of course I didn’t give up as a Disabled Army Veteran—I know how to make it through—but not without unnecessary frustration because the lead coach expects you to not “slow the class down” by…learning how to ride, perhaps? She literally took me aside to share this concern (it’s not like I didn’t pay hundreds of dollars for her to teach me how to ride.) Highly do NOT recommend unless you don’t make common beginner mistakes and/or have dirt bike or motorcycle experience. I will take my business elsewhere. Too much focus on being a badass, not a beginner.
Hi Pearl,
We are sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy your Dirt Camp experience, however, we have checked our 2022 rosters and have no record of anyone by this name (first or last) attending one of our classes. We presume you are choosing to stay anonymous, therefore we cannot address your specific day of class experience, but we would like to address your points regardless.
First- we state in our terms of service before the purchase of a ticket that DC Dirt Camp is a
“group training environment”, and that if you think you may have need for special accommodations or additional assistance we can make arrangements for private lessons.
Second, we teach eight beginner students at a time in our Level one classes. On a rare occasion, we have had one student who really struggles to pick up the skills early in the day that are essential for moving on with the class. We do our best to help give them as much extra attention as possible to assist the learning process while simultaneously meeting the needs of the class as a whole. Unfortunately out of roughly 2,300 students over our five years in business, we have had to ask a handful of students to sit out the remainder of a class and watch or come back for private coaching when it becomes clear that the majority of the clients are not getting their money’s worth while they are waiting on one fellow student. When the learning curve is too steep for an individual, we have to honor the group dynamic as a whole and have to make that tough choice and have that hard conversation.
Lastly, I personally am really sorry you felt that I focused on “being a badass” as that is exactly opposite of why I started this school- to make riding a motorcycle less intimidating, more accessible, and to provide safe fun for a wider breadth of people than this sport typically attracts. Please reach out to me if you would like my support in continuing your motorcycle education journey and I will make time for a private lesson for you.
Fantastic experience: I have attended two training events with DC Dirt Camp. Intro to Adventure riding this past spring and the 2 Day Advanced Adventure Training this November at Penmerryl Farm . BJ and her team always put together a well thought out event that helps you progress in a challenging and fun environment. They always ask what you are looking to get out of the class and make sure to cover that skill set.
So awesome to see students like you grow by leaps and bounds ...at least in part, as a result of our training!
Fantastic experience: DC Dirt Camp is always a great experience. It's a wonderful way to spend time with the family outside. The training is solid, the equipment is all provided, and I can't wait to see the new training site.
It has been our pleasure watching your skills and your kids' skills grow over the years! Thanks for coming back!
Fantastic experience: Just finished another great training with DC Dirt Camp! The 2-Day Advanced ADV Training was perfect for making me a stronger off-road rider on my dual sport. The location on the farm (Penmerryl) offered wonderful hospitality, open spaces to train and ride, and a venue to bond with your fellow riders.
So glad you came up for training. You improved tremendously throughout the weekend and it was really fun getting to hang out a little more than at a regular day class!
Fantastic experience: Dirt Curious? Street motorcyclist who wants to switch to ADV riding? DC Dirt Camp is a wonderful place to try your hand at riding off-road motorcycles. Anyone, and I mean ANYONE who is interested in ADV motorcycle riding should learn to ride off-road on a small bike BEFORE they attempt it on a large ADV bike. DC Dirt Camp can provide that experience, bikes and all!
Thanks Dallas! We sure think it's the easier softer way to approach dirt (little bikes first). Wish people would take your word for it BEFORE they get injured or smash their big expensive bikes!
Fantastic experience: Excellent instruction, a beautiful site to ride on. My confidence is boosted after the class an I cannot wait to take the next level. The class was a mix of adults and kids which was fun. BJ is an excellent riding coach and the supplied motorcycles were in great shape. Fun!
Thanks! We're looking forward to having you back soon!
Fantastic experience: I had an exceptional experience with DC Dirt Camp. I really enjoyed learning from BJ & her team. There is plenty of individual attention for a newbie like me. I loved that the bike & gear was all included. This placed got me hooked on the sport.
Welcome to your new addiction Alex!
Fantastic experience: DC Dirt Camp was my entry in to ADV riding. I had a great time and learned a lot. BJ is a great instructor! Highly recommend this school to start out your ADV training or brush up your skills every season.
Thanks Julie- we love having students like you- who are open minded and always looking to improve. We believe that ANYONE can learn and take some golden nuggets of wisdom away from our training
Fantastic experience: Every time I accidentally run into dirt roads, I smile and say a quiet "thanks, BJ" (from DC Dirt Camp). A few months after getting my street license, I took the Level 2 course and gained a ton of confidence for on-street riding. The next spring I returned for Level 3 on the little dirt bikes. I had so much fun with Level 3 that I brought my full-size ADV bike back the next day (just getting to class 2 hrs away was my longest ever ride at the time as a beginner). I absolutely loved the courses. They improved my general riding skills and taught me what my bike could do under various conditions. The courses progressed gradually: basic clutch skills in the first course to braking exercises to figure 8s by the end of the day. With the confidence and skills I got from the course, I now ride confidently in Eastern Europe (we moved) and love it when the roads turn to dirt. I have used my DC Dirt Camp skills to ride a dirt bike for multiple days in the area of the Red Bull Romaniacs course. I also recently joined a Horizons Unlimited meet-up to get a taste of love long-distance worldwide motorcycle travel.
What an amazing rider story! I'm so glad to have gotten you comfortable enough to be enjoying the rough roads! Proud mama duck over here!
Fantastic experience: I did Level 1. BJ and the crew were awesome! Learned all the basics. They had all the equipment and bikes. One of the main things BJ focused on was safety and it was a lot fun. I'll definitely be going back for level 2!
Can't wait to have you back!
Fantastic experience: Great class. Great teacher. Great equipment. I knew how to ride a motorcycle but never dirt. I took this class as an intro and felt great but never had practice opportunities afterwards. A year later I took a trip to Utah and went dirtbiking all day on a 70 mile trip and felt immediately comfortable because of this class! Do it!
So glad you got a chance to get out there and ride off road again! So when are you buying an adventure bike?
Fantastic experience: Amazing class for my 9 year old. Well worth the money. He learned how to ride a dirt bike after one day with no previous experience.
Glad your kiddo got to experience our program! We are hoping to hire more coaches and resume our kids' program in the future. We had to pause for now for lack of staff in this crazy economy!
Fantastic experience: Before my last training with BJ at DC Dirt Camp (yes I took several classes because I love this place), I was intimidated by my big bike (750 GS), lacking the confidence to do things that I could easily do on my smaller bike, a KLX 230. By building on sets of exercises from walking the bike to balancing to tight cornering, BJ gave me the ability to ride with confidence and to have the most fun with my GS. I received great training in a safe and supporting environment and ended the class riding a terrific maze with many tight turns - something I never thought I could do before. I cannot wait to do more, thank you BJ and the team!
We're so glad you got your confidence up! You're a great rider on a great bike!
Fantastic experience: Two Thumbs up - can't think of a better way to spend my money and time: fun, learn, outdoors Great business, instructor, staff
Thanks so much Arman. We continue to improve on what we do here, so hopefully you'll come see how we've grown since you came to camp!
