Fantastic experience: Both of our boys went through Maxwell Driving School. The school did a great job. I read some of the negative reviews before signing up and we did not have any issues at all. They were professional and I definitely feel like my boys learned a lot and will be better drivers for attending. I have been driving a long time and they are even teaching me new things.

Fantastic experience: The classroom sessions were boring but the driving sessions were wonderful! I absolutely suggest scheduling with Heidi. She was so patient and calm with me. I couldn’t have asked for a better instructor.

Negative experience: My mother has had a horrible experience with this school. She got a ticket and decided to pay for it instead of fighting it in court. She was ordered to take a defensive driving class but she is not good with technology so I scheduled it for her. The first time they did not send use the code for the class till after it was over. Then weeks later we tried again, this time we had a code, but this time the class never started. I can only imagine the amount of people that this could be happening to but they don't have the technical no how to know it's not their fault. If possible I am going to try and get my mom her money back. When I signed up for the class I wondered why they had a no returns under no circumstances but know I know.

Negative experience: 0/10 experience 9/10 don’t recommend . I went this summer before school the classroom is absolutely freezing to the point where it’s hard to focus. The instructors talk about nonsense for a majority of the class. They brought a bunch of puppies into the classroom to advertise for a shelter for almost two hours while they pooped and peed in the classroom. They didn’t really teach anything you can’t learn on your own or from the book used for your permit. Also the funeral home visit was an absolute bummer where he basically explained how devastating it was for a parent to lose their child in a car crash (obviously). I would def tell parents to look into alternatives cause nothing they taught in this class is worth $625.

Sorry that you were unable to enjoy the class.

Positive experience: Both of my daughters went through Maxwell’s school. They are both good drivers but I couldn’t tell you if it was what they taught them or what we taught them. Great safe cars for the lessons.

Maxwell Driving School

I figure it was a team effort which is what we aim for. Thank you for the four star rating.

Positive experience: Well I am glad they offer something like this for insurance discount purposes but this is not a quick process. We started in August with the 4 day class, did 8 one hr driving lessons but it was hard to find available times after school and on weekends. I am sure the number of lesson times to teacher ratio was lacking but just wasnt expecting to start Aug 5th and finish Oct 25th with last lesson. Overall, if your patient, everyone was nice and process was easy but it took a lot longer for my daughter to get her license than anticipated. After the road test you also wait 10 business days to get your license.

Maxwell Driving School

Thank you for your review. we are sorry that it took that length of time. we had several instructors quit towards the end of summer, which is our busiest time of the year, and that left us short of instructors. It usually takes about four to six months to get them certified. we have just added a new instructor. As far as the 10 day waiting period to get the license that is mandated by the Tennessee Department of Safety and we have no control over that. Once again thank you for the review.

Negative experience: Absolutely garbage class. Do not take this class!! There are many scheme-y contract statements that CHARGE FEES and DON’T ALLOW REFUNDS. You can’t even drive until after 30 hours of dreadfully long classtime with horrible instructors who ramble the whole time about things completely unrelated to driving. I didn’t learn anything until 4 hours into the first class! Not one person in the class wanted to be there. They completely disrespected me and screamed at me by the end while I was being quiet and respectful to the infamous lady in all these reviews (Mrs. Maxwell) and they hold the kid’s phones hostage for 8 hours and power-trip the whole time. Don’t take this class. Also especially horrible for the $625 price tag! P.S. In response to the owner: I have a recording of the lady screaming at me. My brother also has a recording of her, while he was on the phone with me. (I had AirPods on.) Seems like a common trend that instructors love yelling at students, hence the other reviews. Please read the NEGATIVE reviews. They’re all very similar, and go back even 4 years. The reason why I wasn’t responding to her when she told me to put away my phone, in the office, was because my brother told me to ignore her. He said she has no right to yell at me. At this overpriced “driving” class; not a daycare or public school! I only had my phone out during break-time to contact my parent. Do not waste your money at Maxwell driving school.

Maxwell Driving School

We made it crystal clear in the parent meeting and on the first day of class that no cell phones are allowed during instruction time which is the whole day. The instructor caught you outside using the phone that you were supposed to put up but you decided not to follow the rules and refused to turn in your cell phone at the beginning of class unlike 99% of the class. You were never yelled at any time by any instructor or staff member. We requested three times for you to put the phone up but you totally refused and disrespected the instructor’s requests. We have left messages for your parents to come up to the office to discuss this matter.

Negative experience: Horrible. Obviously Mr Maxwell is not there as the new owners and I had major issues. First, no golf cart obstacle course as advertised! Second, your driving lessons are separate and they schedule you a month out from the classes ! Our driver was late and rude! The co owners were unprofessional ( also the drivers) and unpleasant to my son as well as myself. When I called to complain concerning the rudeness of the late driver they confronted my son about it. What they promise on the website and what they deliver are not the same. I was told that because of our distance that they would schedule the simulators and driving on the same day. I spoke to Michelle to verify this, I paid and called as she TOLD ME to schedule. She specifically said do not schedule on website, let me schedule for you so you won’t have to drive here several times. No one called me back. Called again and Michelle said no she couldn’t do that? She was short handed It was a matter of days. So I had to make several trips to only be treated like is was a nuisance that we showed up for the driving lessons ON TIME! The whole golf cart/ driving obstacle course as advertised- too short handed, Go somewhere else! There are cheaper, better driving courses in Memphis! I should have went with another company. My niece and nephew were going to sign up here! Not anymore. I should have read these reviews.

Negative experience: As the parent of an athlete, it was important for us to complete Drivers Ed during the summer. This was no where near the case, as we took the class at the end of June 2021 and did not complete the course until October 2021. I found communication to be lacking on the front end, because I had to register for the week long course and then I had to register individually for each driving session (something that I don't feel was clearly communicated during registration). Between the lack of communication on the front end that did not fully disclose that the driving sessions could take months and the lack of after school time slots available, I felt like this process was much longer and drawn out than I expected. Also be prepared that the cost of the driving test is not included in the fee for the course. It is an additional charge. The driving teachers were the highlight. They were very patient and gave my son some great tips.

Positive experience: The office manager, Michele reached out to me personally to rectify all scheduling issues. She was VERY friendly and helpful. She was also understanding of our concerns and received my constructive criticism with grace. She was more than willing to help.

Negative experience: Did not teach how to drive backwards; example parallel park and even not teach how to back out of a parking spot. Driver lessons where suppose to be a hour each driver teacher came back in 50/55 minutes and even when they were late leaving because of the teacher they still shorted our time. I would have did a better job teaching my child myself vs spending $550 for a half job.

Negative experience: While I did like being able to schedule and change my son's driving lessons online the content of the lessons was severely lacking. As my 3rd child to take lessons, I have some prior experience. It never occurred to me that he wouldn't receiving instruction in reverse or parking of any kind. He drove around the area without any actual instructions. He was told his braking needs improvement but not told in what way. Overall, the experience was only to check the block with the insurance company for a discount and not for any skills he actually learned. Other child used another local driving school a couple of years ago (currently closed due to Covid) and they actually taught parking, reversing, and a fuller spectrum of skills.

Fantastic experience: Its a great school I took years ago. For those of you that said the school doesn’t do much. Like teaching freeways and all that. I mean that’s something you can learn on your own. Parallel parking too. My first day of work years ago I was still a little rusty driver but I just did it and it became the norm. It’s just something you practice. Good school all in all

Negative experience: this was THE WORST experience i’ve ever had. $550 plus TAX for them to teach you everything that was the in the DMV manual. I only learned one thing which was the alcohol level. You only drive around in 3 different areas for an hour. No backing up, parallel parking, or anything. They teach you everything your parents can teach you at HOME for FREE. On top of the $550 dollars you spend, they don’t tell you that the TN ROAD TEST ISN’T INCLUDED. They charge you an extra $60 JUST TO DO THAT. And please don’t get me started on the RUDE receptionist. Every time you call, she has an attitude. Also, after you take the road test, you have to wait an EXTRA 10 days to for the test scores to even be put IN THE SYSTEM. They swore up and down they told me that, but didn’t tell me ANYTHING. Now after taking this class for almost 2 MONTHS, & 5 TRIPS TO THE DMV, i still have not received my license. TOTAL waste of money, and would NOT recommend.

Fantastic experience: I have had a great experience with Maxwell Driving School. Very detailed information is explained during the classroom instruction. Technical aspects of driving are explained in extreme details. Absolute wonderful program with very professional and experienced on the road driving instructors that encouraged my student to build on his driving skills. I HIGHLY recommend this program.

Fantastic experience: I have had 2 of sons attend Maxwell Driving School and would highly recommend this experience for all youthful drivers. It prepared them in many ways for the many occurrences one can experience as new driver. Knowledge is power and this school gives a great amount of knowledge and teaches skills that one cannot achieve on their own or without professional guidance. I recommend all parents of new drivers to get this training for the children here. Thank you so much. Henry Todd, retired police officer.

Negative experience: Have not used the school yet but my first impression after talking with lady on phone to get info, was negative. She seemed rude and impatient. Talked fast and seemed frustrated when asked to repeat. Glad I read these reviews. Will not use.

Negative experience: Don't waste your time going to this school. They don't keep any record and this so called Michelle was very rude and Ignorant stating that they don't keep record of who passed and who failed in their school. What an illiterate set of individuals working @ Maxwell or the owner must be illiterate too. How can you own a school but don't keep records. You are not worthy of training a dog or cat to drive.

Clarence Williams 8 years ago

Negative experience: Terrible experience with my son. He completed the course, and for a month, we could not anyone competent enough to send his test scores electronically. Maxwell dropped the ball and failed to make it right. After two times at the DMV, the scores never transferred. Memphis is the only place that can take technology and still act like it's the dark ages. If you use them, stay on their behinds! Make sure they do what you paid them to do. They know How to collect the money, but unable to deliver on services in a timely fashion.

Negative experience: Let me give you a little backstory before I start typing my unpleasant time at this place. I am over the age of 18, so this applies to my adult private lesson drivers. I never really got the chance to drive when I was younger because of family issues. I also lived on a busy intersection, so my guardians were always fearful to teach me how to drive. Therefore, I was always stuck on how to learn how to drive growing up. Now on to my experience.. I really didn't learn anything from this driving experience here at all. There was an instructor named "Ginger" at this location that was really slightly annoyed while teaching me how to drive. However, keep in mind that this was my first time "EVER" being behind the wheel of a car in my life. The instructors kept saying that a simulator that I took before lessons were supposed to help me, but we all know that you need actual driving experience to really get a grasp on it! I didn't even get to drive on the simulator because they didn't give me the proper directions on what to do while on it. She didn't even know If I drove with her before, which was fine, but don't they have the paper to tell you that with some of my information on it? She also wanted to take me out on a highway to before even knowing if I drove before with them, which is dangerous! She also gave up 30 minutes in because she thought It was to hard for me to learn and got a new instructor to help me. Who does this to somebody's on their first lesson? I mean, don't get me wrong, I know that everybody is human and we all make mistakes, but this was unacceptable. This is so unfortunate because I hate giving bad reviews. I was so excited to do my first lesson, but I was extremely disappointed/unsatisfied and won't be coming back.
