Negative experience: My kid has been coming here for 3 weekends and still hasn't gotten behind the wheel. Yet I'm paying 600 and class ends next weekend. I'm regretting it.

Fantastic experience: Both of my boys went here, I like their fast track driving portion because my son has actually been driving since he was 13, with an adult, of course, but we just never felt that six months of driving was good enough and wanted our kids safe and so we taught them on a stick shift vehicle before they ever learn to drive an automatic. So when it came time to drive with the instructor, our kids already had a considerable amount of practice driving. And don’t worry we didn’t take them on public roads. These were back dirt roads that they practice on until they had permits. We got orange cones taught them how to parallel park how to park regular how to back in back out. We also taught them 99% of accidents are preventable even when the law says it not their fault. It usually still is because they didn’t see them coming.

Negative experience: Don't send your kids here.

Daniel Lagunas 2 years ago

Negative experience: The owner, David, was beyond disrespectful and makes very rude remarks towards student drivers. His remarks appear to be sexist in nature and does not encourage young drivers to get ahead. Instead, he humiliates them by directly telling them, "bad driver" and, "no wonder you can't drive". I would advise anyone to avoid this place. More than likely, they are going to comment under my review as false, but it is difficult to neglect the reality when majority of the reviews align with what I am stating. I hope MVD does not continue to support them or someone else changes management because all I got after a phone call, was a person laughing on the other end.

Positive experience: I have purchased driver's education, with driving hours and road testing from McGinnis School of Driving two times. The first time was for my 18 y.o. nephew, who moved in with us at the beginning of the COVID lockdowns. More recently, for my 15 y.o. daughter. Both were positive experiences overall. My nephew ended up completing the classroom portion and lacked the motivation to schedule the in-person driving lessons to obtain his license. This was not the fault of the school. Rather, it was the lack of motivation and initiative on his part to obtain a license. I don't fault the school for that. He still doesn't have a license (his choice) and relocated to a major metro area where public transit is readily available, which is probably in the best interest of public safety (LOL). My daughter, Savannah, had a wonderful experience. She liked the real life stories that were shared in class and learned a great deal. Although it was sometimes difficult to find available appointments for driving instruction that didn't conflict with her school and work schedules, she had a very positive experience. The instruction was great and very constructive. She wasn't offended by anything that was said by the instructors but she was appalled by some of the disrespectful behaviors exhibited by some of her classmates at times (Ex. talking on cellphone during class after being told devices should be turned off, being rude/disrespectful to the instructors, etc.). I might be viewed as a little old-fashioned in this sense but I was glad that the school took a no-nonsense approach to dealing with this sort of discourteous behavior. Parents send their kids to driving school to learn and to become responsible, safe drivers. It is a privilege to be afforded the opportunity to attend and they should appreciate that and take it seriously. It is the responsibility of the instructors to be sure that the students have met the minimum competency requirements to obtain licensure. Just because you pay for a class doesn't mean you automatically "pass" if you don't/won't/can't meet the standards. Personally, I appreciated the fact that my child wasn't just "passed" because we paid for it without the assurance that she was truly safe to operate a vehicle. I value her life and the lives of other too much to want her "passed" through Driver's Ed without having actual competency demonstrated. I feel confident that she is safe to drive, thanks to the instruction she received at McGinnis. While I do wish that there were more driving hours available for scheduling on weekends (the only negative thing I have to say), I am mostly grateful for individuals with the patience to teach these novice drivers. God knows that my nerves couldn't handle it and I was happy to pay a reasonable price to have the pros provide that! I am very satisfied with the instruction provided and plan to send my youngest daughter when she is old enough to start driving

Negative experience: McGinnis was very inappropriate and awful i don't recommend anyone going here to learn to drive because he is disgusting and disrespectful to people.

Fantastic experience: Great place to learn to drive. Family owned and just great people!

soph block 3 years ago

Negative experience: So bad. the entire class was so boring, but ontop of that there is no place to schedule your drive times on the website and you have to call them. also, you can only do ONE HOUR DRIVE TIMES. IN THE SPAN OF TWO WEEKS. just go to turners. also, when you actually are able to schedule your drive times they make you put in your permit and when it was issued, but you cant even do that because you have to have permission to do it. screw Mcginnis.

Turner Liotta 3 years ago

Fantastic experience: Got my permit quick did the week class got it done quick and it worked fine for me. MrMcginnis is old school and gets stuff done fast and would recommend this place if you want something fast, easy, and informative.

Raina Cohn 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: McGinnis is the only place for anyone to take classes to prepare to get their driver's license. I took classes in 1976 when I was a teenager. I was 14 and 9 months when I completed my program and got my driver's license. Still remember what I was taught.

Tracy Lee 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: always fast and friendly

Marissa Barreras 4 years ago

Negative experience: I called to inquire for information before taking a class, woman answering the phone did not want to help me and had no idea what she was talking about. Then said "just look online" and hung up.

Lisa Madrid 4 years ago

Fantastic experience: At first I was apprehensive to send my son here, because of all the reviews but I am very pleased to say that our experience was very positive my son enjoyed the class and Mr Mcginnis was an excellent instructor.

Monica Trujillo 4 years ago

Negative experience: The woman there is very rude and made my kid feel awful, don't send your kid there!

Autumn Dauk 5 years ago

Negative experience: Owner was just rude . Still got my license but barely. Makes very uncomfortable. Wouldn't suggest for new timers. I like his son Ryan though he's a great teacher!

Emmalie Ostler 5 years ago

Negative experience: I'd give this place no stars if I could. The owner is rude and a liar. When I was taking driver's ed he kept calling me "baby and Hun" when I asked him very politely to stop he immediately got mad and had me drive back to the school, when we got there my best friend was waiting for me in the lobby so I went in there and she followed me into the office (the lobby and office have separate doors on the outside but have connecting room Inside) Mr. Mcginnis walked into me and turned around and started yelling at me saying" I was the Rudest student he's ever had" I asked him to stop yelling at me and when he did not, I turned to leave and he hit me in the shoulder. Dont send your children here.

Good afternoon Emmalie. Your review contains extremely serious charges, yet I do not find you in our customer or student database. This "review" has been flagged and reported to Google as false.

Negative experience: Horrible place. Do not bring your children here. They are so rude and disrespectful. Scam.

Isaiah Mestas 5 years ago

Negative experience: Absolute worst business in ABQ. The owner should be put in jail. He failed me based with lack of evidence and then I had to go in multiple times to view footage and I still haven’t seen them. The receptionist was absolutely horrible and so rude. I’m shocked MVD recommended this place. NEVER GO HERE. KEEP YOUR MONEY.

Interestingly, you failed yesterday and have an appointment to come in today to review the video of the road test. Not sure if that constitutes coming in multiple times...?

Shannon Porch 5 years ago

Negative experience: I would not give this place not even ONE star! I took my daughter there for her road test and Mr. Mcginnis literally made her cry. He is rude and condescending. He questioned my ability as well in teaching our daughter how to drive and my ability to correct her. Parents do NOT take your kids there! Go somewhere that actually cares about our young new drivers! I am shocked and horrified that MVD actually sent us to these horrible, creepy, unprofessional people!

Sam Chilelli 6 years ago

Negative experience: I took the courses here a few years ago when I turned 18 and was a very shy person, but I had no problems with any of the instructors up until I had my pre test with the owner himself. He asked me a question about driving and being as nervous as I was I answered wrong and he then began to harass me while I was driving saying that because I didn’t know the right answer that I am insinuating his instructors are not teaching me right. Like how does someone think something like that? Then when I finished and we got back he insisted to another instructor that I said they were not teaching me right. This was one of absolute worst experiences and I would not recommend at all. I honestly don’t know if he was be prejudice being that I’m Asian or if he is just a psychopath. I was so scared of him that I refused to go back to take my test and my aunty who payed $500 was very upset. So thanks for nothing!!

Fantastic experience: I think it's great, very nice and comfortable, great people and great service and Ryan was very nice and helps to make you feel comfortable.i am officially lisensed and very happy,I definitely recommend

Keith Garcia 6 years ago

Negative experience: Premier Driving School is $20.00 cheaper for the road test and has better costumer appreciation. Don't use McGinnis.

E. Franke 6 years ago

Negative experience: The owner is very opinionated and argumentative, he made me cry and shamed me in front of the class. I found Ryan to be much more considerate and affable instructor. He would also call me "Hun" which made me very uncomfortable and fairly unprofessional.

Lita Maldonado 6 years ago

Fantastic experience: My son went to driving school and now my daughter went there. Its a great school.. Both of my teenagers never had a complaint about the teacher or the staff that work there. Thank You for everything. Mr Mcginnis you and your son are great teachers.

Negative experience: It’s crazy this is one of the MOST expensive driving schools with the WORST reviews and soooo many bad reviews. At one point we must realize, not everyone is wrong and change is growth...... ohhhhhh I’m so grateful I read these reviews!!

andrew desimone 6 years ago

Negative experience: Trust the reviews! This place is horrible! They will fail your drivers test and then offer practice tests. they are a scam and abuse their power, i took the test here and failed and then went somewhere else and passed with no extra training. They will try and scam you DO NOT GO HERE the workers are the rudest people ever and dont care at all about their customers. What a awful place.

McGinnis Driver Safety Centers

Andrew, we have no control over you passing or failing the written exam. The written exam is taken on the NM State testing system. It is controlled and graded automatically at the State level. When a customer fails the written exam, we do suggest you take our practice exams because they are geared solely toward NM laws unlike the free practice exams that are not pertinent to NM laws. We have no “power” over these exams. Each exam of 25 questions is created from a bank of 200 questions. So, what happened was, the first time you got 25 questions that you didn’t know all the answers to, then you went somewhere else and got 25 questions that you did know enough of the answers to. It could have gone either way either time and we explained to all of our customers that the questions pulled from a bank of questions and a new test is created for every person taking it. In addition, we could not find you in our customer base. Did you actually test at one of our facilities?

Dabble Lemons 6 years ago

Negative experience: Believe all the bad reviews. If you suffer from test anxiety definitely avoid this place. Owner and his wife are extremely rude and condescending. I would really appreciate it if the owner doesnt reply to my review. If you read the other replys he has left to reviews you can see that he likes to disclose peoples private information and argue with them rather than providing good customer service. I am grateful for this experience because it reminded me to check reviews before trying someplace new.

McGinnis Driver Safety Centers
McGinnis Driver Safety Centers

I’m sorry you feel that way, Dabble. There’s not a lot we can do to address issues from anonymous reviewers. Did you bring these issues up when you came in? I don’t find you in our customer base. Did you take classes with us, or did you take the written or road test for your learners permit or drivers license? We can’t help you if you only give voice to your concerns over social media rather than directly with us. What personal information did we disclose?

Negative experience: Wow, the old lady that answers the phone is extremely rude. I second you on the, "who needs to be treated like a second-class citizen? Who actually pays to be condescended to?" Well not me either. I had some good experiences with McGinnis School of Driving up until i had to speak to the older women who is currently taking calls for your office. If the lady is not your wife or family than i suggest getting rid of her. Cause man is she driving customers towards wanting to deal with other companies after being spoken to and condescended to like she is doing. This lady spoke to me as if everything was my fault and that i should know the information already. I suggest going elsewhere until this lady is fired unless you want to be degraded and talked down to.

Negative experience: Sent my son through this class. VERY disappointed with scheduling times and class instructors. Were not helpful from Dave McGinnes down to the pwrson answering the phone. Iwner is flat out rude and obnoxious. Have 2 more kids who will NOT be going through this non customer based oriented organization.

Mr. Garcia, I'm sorry we could not find a solution that would work for you. The State of New Mexico requires that a student be 15 years of age by the last day of the classroom segment. However, as your review implies, you did not have any concerns, (or if you did, did not bring them to our attention), while your son was taking classes with us. He completed his classroom instruction without any issues, then went on to complete his in-car lessons. Upon reviewing his driving schedule, he had to cancel a number of lessons (6), most likely due to other commitments, but did complete all 7 lessons and went on to his provisional license.
Your review was posted within moments of our refusing to "bend" the rules for you so that your underage child could attend classes. This is a non-negotiable issue and readers of this review need to understand that it is not an accurate review. We wish you well.

Fantastic experience: I give 5 stars. You will learn how to drive if you pay attention.

Phil Martinez 10 years ago

Negative experience: The instructor David Mcginnis was rude and argumentative. Scheduling driving time was difficult due to limited hours and availability of instructors.

Nicolas Huffaker 10 years ago

Fantastic experience: One of the best places to learn how to drive at. Everyone will be pretty awesome to you as long as you follow simple traffic laws. Had a very fun experience.

Michael Baca 10 years ago

Negative experience: worst school ever the teacher here can't even remember what he is talking about he is always asking his students what was I talking about? When he gets off topic. Then he got mad at a student because one student kept on answering all of the questions being that no one else wanted to answer a question. I mean come on man getting mad at someone for answering questions REALLY?

McGinnis Driver Safety Centers
McGinnis Driver Safety Centers

Michael, engaging students is both critical and difficult. Asking questions is just one method. Asking students for help, is another. Drawing every student into the conversation is important. One student cannot be allowed to dominate the classroom. Your perception may be a little skewed as you, it seems, did not want to participate. I hope your participation in the behind-the-wheel segment leans more to the 100% mark.
