Drive-Rite Driving School: Reviews
Fantastic experience: Amazing Driving School with Amazing teachers who want the best for you, worth the money and time 10/10!
Positive experience: You're better off finding somewhere else to learn how to drive. I've contacted these people non stop for a week now and have gotten zero responses across both calls and email. You're also better off just going to the Straw Plains DMV if you want your driving test. Not worth it. Update April 8th, 2025: So as it turns out, the instructor had some life stuff happening and ended up incredibly busy. As I feel like my original review was unfair, I've bumped it up to 4 stars. However, I will note that if you take their summer classes, you WILL be put through the ringer a 100 times over.
Fantastic experience: I was very pleased and Craig apparently is the most patient man ever. I don’t think I would’ve ever been ok with hitting Alcoa Hwy but he did it! He’s very knowledgeable and clearly knows how to teach teen driving. My son enjoyed the on the road time. He learned so much more than I could have taught him on my own. Thanks Craig and team!
Negative experience: If you have a year to wait go ahead and use them. If I could give zero stars I would. Our two kids have been waiting almost 4 months and we’ve called numerous times to be told a “couple of weeks”. We are told we’ll get a call back and never hear back from them, we call again they say a “couple weeks” and they’ll call us back, but don’t.
Negative experience: My child passed the test in July 2024, it’s January 2025 and the school had never reached out for behind the wheel lessons. I have called them multiple times and they never returned me a phone call and at that point I would like to get the reimbursement for the behind the wheel lessons we never got a call for.
Fantastic experience: I am truly grateful, the service was exceptional, they are very attentive and pay attention to the smallest detail and focus on your learning. I recommend them 100%, I had a great time the time I was there.
Thank you Carlos. We are glad we could help you with getting your license. If we can help with anything moving forward, please feel free to reach out to us.
Negative experience: My son completed the classroom course in late July, was told it could be a month before anyone could give the 6 hour In-person driving lesson. It’s now late November and no word from this office. It’s my understanding they’re continuing to enroll students. Be very cautious…we cannot get a response or refund from Drive-Rite, have called three times.
Fantastic experience: Excellent and caring for all ages and abilities!
Thank you Teresa. Glad we could help.
Fantastic experience: Thanks to Drive-Rite for their driving course! Their flexibility in scheduling allowed our daughter to complete the course work during times that fit her schedule. She said the instructors were personable and informative. We appreciated Craig's time on the road driving portion of the program, reviewing various driving situations on and off the interstate.
Thank you. Glad to help Pauline reach he goal of getting this done. Be Safe, Craig
Fantastic experience: I had a very good experience learning with Drive-Rite. I went through their 36 hour driver education program and took private driving lessons also. Driver Education Program - the program was really comprehensive, all the instructors were very helpful and interested in students' learning, and the flexible nature of the program was great for me to go at my own pace, balancing the lessons around my work schedule. Driving lessons - I took driving lessons with Craig - he is a great instructor, and slowly built my confidence driving on different kinds of roads and situations. He went through how one should be looking around and what one should consider while driving - I still find it helpful while driving.
Fantastic experience: Drive Rite was amazing. Craig and his daughter were great watchers and very professional. 10/10 I would absolutely recommend if you are needing to learn how to drive. They taught me everything I needed to know and more. I was even able to get my liscense through them. Could not be more enthusiastic about how awesome this program is !
Thanks Allie, Wishing you success in your driving.
Fantastic experience: I was a student at Drive-Rite for the past year and a half. The instructors are extremely kind and patient. They definitely helped me to the goal of getting my license. I would definitely recommend going to this driving school, it’s definitely worth the money and time.
Thanks for the positive words. We were so glad to help you get your license. The smile when you passed the test and proudly showed me your license will always be such an awesome memory for me. We are glad we were a part of this, helping you prove to yourself you could do it, even when others said you couldn't. Craig
Fantastic experience: Craig did a great job giving my daughter the confidence she needed to further her driving skills. Great advice. Put her on roads and highways she was previously uncomfortable tackling. Highly recommend this driving experience.
It was truly our pleasure. She is going going to do great. Thanks for choosing Drive-Rite. Please don't hesitate if we can help with anything. Craig
Fantastic experience: I was very anxious about getting behind the wheel and learning how to drive. I now have my license. The instructor (Craig) was patient and understanding. I recommend driving lessons with this school.
Hey Katie, I am glad I could help you get your license. I know having them will make it easier on you and your family. I knew you could do it. Keep driving and be safe, Craig
Fantastic experience: Effective, and the flexible classroom hours were really nice
Thanks, keep practicing will away at school!
Negative experience: Find a different driving school. My child was done with their 30 hour workbook for classroom work in early May. They didn’t schedule the 6 hour driving portion of the school till I had called multiple times, 3 months later at the end of July. Then had to wait for them to turn in there homeland security forms and was told they would call again, which never happened again I had to call after find out if it cleared and was told it came in a couple days ago and I asked why I wasn’t called she said things happened and offered no apology for their inconvenience once again. Their teaching staff is more concerned with their phones than grading the papers to get them back to the kids to finish the workbooks. They were more concerned with getting kids going on vacation to finish their driving part of the school than the students that were there before them. They don’t teach or practice parking of any kind, merging onto highways or any other roads, they drive around in neighborhoods and don’t get off of surface streets or roads. How they have a AAA sponsorship is beyond me. The only convenience is that supposedly you’re child doesn’t have to take the road test at the DMV. Overall the staff is in way over their heads as far as scheduling and teaching the amount of students they get due to lack of driving schools in the area. So if your child just got their permit and has 6 months then you might get it done by the time they are eligible for their license but don’t expect them to teach what is actually needed in real world driving in Knoxville.
"Thank you for your inquiry. After researching the username and email we could not determine if this was an actual client of Drive Rite. This could be a malicious fake email. Therefore we can't determine if this is an actual review or a phishing email. Please use caution when replying to or communicating with unknown emails. Thank you."
Fantastic experience: Craig was amazing, Literally made me feel like he was someone I knew forever. I was so scared never drove ever in my life at 24 legally blind and he told me everything I needed to know never got aggravated with my anxiety, he gave me lots of advice and was always so positive.
Glad we could help you. Please reach out if you have any questions with the license process as you go forward.
Fantastic experience: We were so appreciative of the flexibility they offer, which was so important for my busy athlete, who rarely has a free weekend. She was able to work at her own pace. Highly recommend for families who cannot do a set schedule and need flexibility!
Thank you Jessica, We realize that people nowadays are very busy. We try to have a flexible program to help make things easier for you and more appealing to students. Again thank you.
Be safe!
Fantastic experience: Mr. Craig was highly knowledgeable with the right way to drive. He knew all the road signs and what they meant, he taught me what street signs to look for in certain areas of the roads , how to use your turn signals and how fast or slow to go when getting on and off the interstate. He used his expertise to put me at ease when I was doing the road test. Thanks, Lloyd Barrett
Thank you Lloyd glad we could help. Be Safe and let us know if we can help in anyway, Craig
Fantastic experience: Craig was SO patient and positive with my daughter. She needed training with some adaptive equipment and he is THE one in Knoxville for this. He has 30+ years of experience training drivers who need adaptations. HIGHLY recommend Drive-Rite driver training.
Thank you, I was so proud to help Issy to achieve her goal. Really proud of her progress and she got it done within her timeline she set for herself.
Fantastic experience: EXCELLENT DRIVING SCHOOL. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND.CRAIG IS A EXCELLENT TEACHER. HELPED MY SON TO LEARN DRIVING. ARRANGED FOR HIS ROAD TEST ,AND TOOK HIM TO THE DMV FOR THE TEST. CRAIG ALWAYS KEPT ME UPDATED ON MY SON'S PROGRESS. THANKS, CRAIG!
Meera, Thank you for letting us help him.
I am glad we could help Kunal get his license. Be Safe Craig
Fantastic experience: Both of my daughters had a wonderful experience getting their driver’s licenses through DriveRite. The flexibility of the classroom instruction was perfect for our family. The on the road instructors tailored their instruction to best fit the needs of each of my daughters and have them confidence and comfort.
Thank you Mark for your review. It was a pleasure working with both of your daughters. I am pleased to know that we could help with their driving education. If you need anything in the future give us a call. Be Safe
Fantastic experience: Very professional and knowledgeable!! Couldn’t ask for more for my daughter. Thanks Craig.
Glad we could help you and your daughter achieve her goal of safe driving. Remember we are here if you ever need any help going forward.
Fantastic experience: Craig and his team did a GREAT job of training our son. He learned so much and we fill much better about his driving. Thank you, Craig!
Glad to help. It was pleasure to work with Luke. Also enjoyed Matthew a couple of years ago. Two great young men. Be safe
Negative experience: This place is super low rent. The building is old and nasty with a terribly musty odor. The “classroom” setup is little more than thrift store chairs and tables. The “self-guided” lesson plan is not what I would ever consider driver training. I took my teen daughter for a class and immediately decided I could not leave her there. Makes me wonder how AAA and the state certified this “training.”
I am sorry we didn't meet your expectations. I am confused since you said you really liked how our school was structured as opposed to others. You mentioned when you were there that you liked the flexibility. I can't understand your review and comment about "self-guided" since you didn't stay for the orientation where we explain how the program works. You went out to go to the restroom and came back in and got your daughter and left. Seems strange why you did a 180 from your early interactions with Ms. Crystal. Then you emailed asking for a refund of your deposit. The website clearly says when you sign up no refunds. The building is not ours we rent the office. I think it was built in the 80's so no it isn't new. The building owners pay a cleaning service so no it isn't "nasty". But, I will forward your comments to them with your contact information so you can explain what you saw that was not up to par. I have attached some pictures about things you mentioned. As form the picture of the big sign with all businesses listed. You put only one side. The side that faces the sun all day everyday. Vinyl letters just doesn't last very long. I have asked for the sign to be fixed and the new building owner is looking into getting some new ones for businesses who's sign have taking a beating in the sun. The chairs and tables do take a beating. Some students are destructive to office fixtures. I don't understand why but they are. We are inspected and licensed each year by the governing bodies you mentioned. Our curriculum is confirmed and we follow their rules and regulations.
Negative experience: Description of Complaint: Drive-Rite Driving School lists itself as a school, and as a class. Their website currently states that they are "a full service driving school, with all types of instruction." This "school" does not offer any instructor led classroom teaching at all. I enrolled my son in driver's ed at Drive-Rite Driving School, and was told there was 30 hours of classroom time, and 6 hours of drive time. It was never mentioned that all of the 30 hours of class time were spent with the student searching through a study guide alone, not in instruction, and I was recently told there are also 5 or 6 videos they watch. I had enrolled my son, and called to inquire on what days and times were available for instructor led class time, and was told that there were none, that they do not teach in class that way. They shared that students just go through a book, find the answers, and handwrite the question verbatim, and the exact answer from the book. This, along with the videos are what the 30 hours consists of entirely. It's basically a study hall. A student could do this at home on their own. I was told this was a class, and to have no teacher teaching at all, is not okay. We attended the orientation (this was not said), and my son came one other day. He told me there is no teacher teaching, and I called in so we could be sure to come on the days for teaching, not during the study hall hours, where they hunt and find answers and copy them down alone. It doesn't exist. I let them know this was misleading, and that I would like a refund for the unused hours. The total cost was $389. I asked for a call back, and was told that she did not know if anyone would call me back, but told me I could come in. I did come in and talked with an instructor that agreed with me that there needed to be changes to the program, but Craig would need to make the decision on the refund. I was told he would call me (in earlier Dec.). I have called back and left messages, with no replies at all. Desired Settlement: Refund; Modification/discontinuance of an advertised claim (From BBB)
We received your complaint and have reviewed. Let me start about mid-way in your complaint.
This is where you say you attended the orientation. This is where you finish filling out the contract and sign it. This is when we ask the parents to come so we can meet and we can explain the program and how it works and parents are encouraged to ask questions. We use some power point slides during orientation classes so we can thoroughly cover how things work and we can be consistent in how we explain things on covering how the program. This is where we explain that the State of Tennessee requires driver education programs to be 30 hours of classroom and 6 hours of one-on-one driving instruction. (See #3 on back of contract for full explanation) There are 15 chapters with a study guide for each chapter. We also explain that there are 8 core videos that the students must watch to complete the program. There are several more supplemental videos that students may also watch since they expand more completely on a subject in the some of the 8 core videos. When the orientation portion is finished and the parents leave, we start on some of the videos which is led by the instructor and there are interactive parts where we ask students to answer, discuss, and explain portions of the videos. This is done on all the videos we show during the classes not just on day of the orientation. We do ask the students to read the chapters. We don't read it to them. After they read the chapter, they do a study guide for that chapter. We encourage them to ask questions and always help them by explaining the material. The study guide questions and the answers from the book are required to be hand written. There are many studies that show that long term retention of material is best when notes are handwritten. (See two of the latest studies. http://www.sciencedaily.com/2021/03/210319080820.html OR http://observatory.tec.mx/edu-news/study-reveals-the-advantages-of-taking-notes-by-hand/) We always allow students to use their notes when testing because this means they reread the material allowing for even more chance of retaining the material for the long term. To say there that there was a class with no teacher is incorrect. An instructor is always in the class, most days there are two instructors in the class. We have not had any study hall hours in months. The only classes that we have had in several months are daytime classroom hours and orientation classes where your son or any student can get instruction from the instructor. You said that you came in and talked with an instructor that agreed that there needed to be changes to the program. I don't know who you spoke with but I assure you that the program basic structure has worked well for thousands of students for decades. I am not sure what was said exactly but I don't think they said "there need to be changes to the program."
We are a full-service driving school with all types of instruction. We do Driver Education courses like your son is enrolled in. We also do Driver Improvement/Court Ordered Classes for tickets or point removal. We also do driver evolutions for medical, vision, and other reasons. We do specialized instruction for students needing adaptive controls and equipment. So, this is not deceptive at all it is exactly what we offer.
You asked for a refund and were told that there are no refunds. The contract states there are no refunds. (See attached "Student Contract") It says this on the front and the back. In addition, our website mentions there are no refunds. If your student does not want to do the classroom portion, we will certainly do the 6 hours of driving instruction. We will not issue refunds since you signed the contract as agreed in the contract.
Fantastic experience: Great opportunity for our daughter to have additional written and one on one driver training with a skilled professional. I would recommend this training for new drivers. Very helpful and friendly staff.
Thank you, Glad to help!
Negative experience: Don't pay for the 36 hour course both lessons I went to the instructor was rude and refused to help me understand parts I was confused about like a teacher is supposed to The behind the wheel lessons were much better if your going to use this school just do the behind the wheel lessons and save yourself almost $400 because they refuse to issue any kind of refund even if the instructor refuses to work with you Reactment of the instructor refusing to help me Me: I don't understand this part of the workbook l Instructor: read the section again Me: Okay i read the section and still do not understand the part Instructor: then read the section again I wish I was making this up Also would like to add Me: Hello I don't have someone I can practice driving with that's why I signed up for your program Instructor: then you are most likely going to fail this program
I am sorry you felt we were rude. We apologize if we were. However we never refused to work with you. You just called and ask for a full refund which in the contract it states there are no refunds. We offered to allow you to put that money towards behind the wheel lessons. We sincerely want to help you achieve your goals of driving. We are happy to hear that the behind the wheel instructor helped you. The drivers education package is $389, which includes 6 hours of driving. The behind the wheel lessons that you mentioned are $50 an hour. The 6 hours is what you elected to do since there are no refunds once you start the school. So the 6 hours that you drove would have been $300 of behind the wheel instruction.
Positive experience: My fiancé took this course and I’m not happy with the driving portion. The in class was good the driving coach was great extremely friendly and gave a lot of good pointers to my fiancé. But now the problem is he is learning and getting better at driving the more he drives and the 3rd drive was the test. And if you pass you can get your license and if you fail you have to go through the dmv to take the test at a later date when you get better which is fine. So my fiancé failed the driving test so we wanted to look into taking more driving classes and see if that would be able to push the test back but after the third one we are informed that we would have had to purchase those driving sessions before the 3rd drive so if they know a student is struggling with driving and needs more practice you would think they would offer that right? Well no they didn’t. Which is the coaches fault because clearly she wasn’t informed of this information by the boss. So to me it was a waste of money and time. I would have been willing to purchase extra driving sessions if there was communication that we could push back the test by doing that.
We wish that you would have communicated that Joey had not done any driving prior to driving with us. We would have been happy to have done additional driving lessons prior to the test. We are allowed to administer the test only once. So to do the test again after it had been given is illegal and we just would never do that. You could still contact us and schedule some additional lessons to help get him ready for the test. We do want him to succeed in his driving. Please give us a call.
Negative experience: Save your money and look elsewhere. Although the course portion was great. It took 8 weeks from the completion of that to get his 6 hours of driving time and road test. It then took 3 weeks to get his actual license because his scores weren’t entered correctly and this was very discouraging especially when you count on your child to be able to drive on their own in 6 months instead of 8 months. Unless things change there I wouldn’t recommend this at this time and I feel bad to say that as I did like my first meeting of the staff last year.
Debbie we are sorry the driving portion took so long to get to. We too do no want it to take this long to get that portion completed. We are now able to get that started sooner. We had two behind the wheel instructors who got Covid and were out for a while and it put us far behind. We were working with the state to get two new behind the wheel instructors cleared with the state and are happy that the state finally got that done. It took us 5 months after we submitted all of the paperwork, background test, and they did all of their instructor test with the state before they were cleared to be instructors. As for the test scores, as with anything with the state it is slow to get anything done. They have 2 people who work on all things involving every driving school in the state. You son's scores were sent in with someone who finished on the same day. When there is a mistake on one it delays everyone who is on the same log until everything gets straightened out. We feel like this delays others unfairly. We have no control once submitted other than to ask the state what the status is.
Negative experience: Do not choose this company for your child! They were very highly rated from several friends of ours. She took all the classroom requirements and here we are 14 weeks later and she still has not been given the opportunity to do the drivers training portion? I called them today to ask for a refund of the portion of the funds our daughter paid from her own pocket, however the lady that answered the phone told us that "He" does not give refunds? I ask her to have him call me today about our concerns and did not get a reply? I'm sure this used to be a reputable company in the past, however it seems from all the other similar post lately, that they have some major issues? Save your money and find an alternative! THEY LEFT US HIGH AND DRY?
We are sorry we were delayed in getting to the driving. We had 2 instructors who had Covid. This put us behind. I did reach out and refunded money and offered to still do the driving. This was refused.
Negative experience: I was disappointed with the results even though the price was low. My son passed the written part of the course then had to wait 6 weeks before beginning his drivers training. The instructor Andy did a great job. We were told to wait 1 to 14 days until the school called saying the road test had been updated by the state DMV (so we could go pick up the license). 3 weeks and no call. We went to the DMV ourselves to find it had been filed for some time. It seems this company takes all the students that apply without regard to their internal capacity to handle them.
Steve sorry for the delay. We have been trying to catch up on driving since the Department of Safety made us suspend driving due to Covid-19. We are controlled by them and if they say shut down we have to. That plus the bad weather we had sometime back has caused delays. I apologize and hope we can move more quickly to finish students. I also apologize for not explaining the delay more clearly in the orientation class.
When a student finishes the driving portion we send their information to the State of Tennessee. We have no control over the State of Tennessee and when the process the students paperwork. I can only call and inquire as to what the delay is and ask them to clear it quickly. I would have been happy to do that if you would have call us after ten days. This is not the only one that has been screwed up getting back from the State of Tennessee. They have had many failures to get paperwork completed or notified and we take the brunt of their mistakes. As for the taking all students, we only take 10 new students at a time. So no we don't take more than the internal capacity. Thanks for your input and we will do all we can to fix any delays.
Fantastic experience: Very educational and lots of information wish I could use my pad instead of all that writing
Thanks Michael. I wish I could have let you use it. Stay safe.
Negative experience: I put down a deposit for a class for my daughter. In less than 24 hours, I had to cancel due to a scheduling conflict. I canceled before the deposit even cleared the bank. I emailed the office manager and never received a response. I sent a second email and she finally responded with, “ We don’t give refunds.” I explained the situation and that I canceled in less than 24 hours. I never received a follow-up email. Very poor customer service and clearly only out to get your money. I was going to reschedule the class, but absolutely not now. She will be going to the Drive4Life Academy. 1st email sent on 2/2...no response 2nd email sent on 2/5...no response Finally received a response on 2/8. It took 6 days for you to cancel the registration. Your statement that her registration took a spot from another student, that is on your company. I canceled in less than 24 hours.
I am sorry your first email was missed. You had signed up on the web. The deposit is $50 to hold your spot. The website explains as you sign up that the deposit is not refundable. We only take 10 new students at a new class. We keep student to instructor numbers low so we can work more closely with each student. We don't run bunches of students through at a time. We also allow students to move through the class at their own pace so they are not rushed through the classroom in 30 hours if they need more classroom time. We do not charge extra for that. So we are not, "clearly only out to get your money".
This class was full with your student in it. We had to turn others away that wanted in this class. You could have re-applied the deposit to another class, but that wasn't what you wanted to do. I am sorry you feel this way. I wish we could have had the opportunity to resolve this with you and help with you daughters driver education.
Positive experience: Didn't attend a class for myself but rode passenger to an 8hr course my boyfriend had to complete. Lunch wasn't until now. Only got a couple 5 minute breaks and information I received was your typical driver improvement class. Boring. Same videos. Same instructor. No room for friends, significant others or children. No bathroom available to those who are waiting on the 'student'. But my opinion would be completely biased so that's all I can say.... unprofessional and odd
Class started at 9:30. Four hours from that start time is when we have lunch break because some students only need a four hour class. That is why we do lunch at 1:30.
At no time was anyone told that they couldn't use our restroom. In fact no one ever asked, or mentioned that anyone was waiting and needed the restroom.
We gave 5-7 minute breaks in between segments so we can cover the material and stay on track. This is so we don't go late. No one wants to stay any later than they have to, so we try to stay on schedule. If people don't come back from breaks on time that could make us run long, which some people did come back late on the first two breaks 12/19/2020 Because of this, managing the breaks was necessary to keep from going past 5:30 end time. Which we did not.
With Covid-19 we are restricted to number of people for class as it is. Our website clearly says no waiting room for visitors. See website link here: https://www.driverite.net/ticket-classes/ Here is the actual paragraph, "Due to limited seating and to limit distractions, please do not bring friends, significant others or children as they will not be allowed to accompany you in the class nor is there a waiting area provided for them." I am sorry if you were not informed that this was the policy. Perhaps your boyfriend should have asked about this before having you come and wasting your day.
I get that you or your boyfriend didn't want to come to a class and spend your Saturday doing this. I understand that you or your boyfriend is probably mad at whoever required him to come to the class. I also understand that you can't get back at them. Just remember all I did was provide you with the most economically price class to fulfill the requirements of who sent you. But I will move forward and do what I need to do.
Negative experience: I believe the course content is good and will prepare drivers for being on the road. However, it is not clear how Drive Rite may be able to accommodate special needs students. There is mention of this on the website but unfortunately the classes did not work for us.
Nikki sorry it didn't work for you. Perhaps if we could have discussed needs prior to starting we could have modified things to work better.
Positive experience: Cheap !
We try to offer the best program at the most competitive price, thanks!
Fantastic experience: Top notch driving school
Thanks Jennifer. Glad to partner with you to help you and your two sons be safe and confident drivers.
Fantastic experience: Hi Please reply to my emails about having three private lessons behind the wheel only!! Thanks AREEJ
Fantastic experience: I took the 4 hour driving class. This is the first driving class I've ever taken. Don't come more than 15 minutes early because there isn't a waiting room. The school is based in an older building on the second floor. It was a little warm since there didn't seem to be any central heat and air. I agree that the seats were too close together and hard as a rock, but you can easily scoot them over and bring a cushion. I gave this school 5 stars not because of the conditions, but because of the class. I feel like l learned a lot since it seems that driving techniques change over time. The teacher, who I assume was Craig Smith, was friendly and made sure everyone understood the material. He used many different outlets to teach the information. I will suggest to everyone I know to take this class whether they need it or not. The teacher is a stickler for cellphones, so be prepared not to use one during the class.
Thanks Coppermist.
Sorry the seats are uncomfortable. I need to tell Lawana to remind everyone to bring a cushion. The AC here is designed wrong and it struggles to keep it comfortable. It is always either freezing or slightly over warm. I have told the building owners for years it needs fixed and since it just got sold maybe the new owner will.
I am glad you learner some new things. That is our whole focus. No one wants to have to come to the class, but I hope we can cover information to keep you safe.
Craig
Negative experience: Craig Smith is awful! Spend the extra money and go to A+ defensive driving! He gives you breaks often and is a good guy. Craig Smith is not a good guy. He is a very very bad guy.
Well I do give breaks. I follow the rules and do what is required by Tennessee Dept. of Safety. I will NOT break the rules for you or anyone, sorry no shortcuts here! Sorry you think I am a very very bad guy.
I try to provide the lowest cost class in the state. I as a provider have rules that I must follow, and make sure attendees follow. I will continue to try to be the most economical class fee and provide the best instruction. No one wants to have to take time to do the class, however if you have to why pay more. But realize if you come here you will have to follow some simple rules. Pay attention, come back on time, don't sleep, play with your phone. I have rules to follow and I will always do so.

Fantastic experience: Very helpful and kind staff members. Learned many technical aspects in class and tackled real life situations in the driving portion. Would reccomend if you’re interested in learning how to be a GOOD driver.
Vaishnavi, thank you. Glad we were able to help. Craig
Fantastic experience: Going into this class as a 25 year old, with little prior driving experience, I was extremely nervous, and the instructors cleared that up, while also teaching me the safe way to drive. I absolutely feel a lot more comfortable driving after completing the 36 hour course. The instructors go above and beyond at this school, and if you're willing to put the effort in, its 100% worth the cost.
Thank you James. Glad you chose us to help you reach your goal! Be safe. Craig
Negative experience: Spent multiple afternoons attempting to schedule an appointment for private driving lessons only for the instructor to ghost me the day we scheduled. Spent 35 minutes just sitting around waiting at the parking lot we were supposed to meet at. No call saying they were running late or anything. Absolute scum.
Nathan I am sorry you had a problem. I do think you have the wrong school. We only set an appointment for individual hourly lessons after a student has paid in advance. I have no record of you in my system. Could you please contact me with the name of the instructor who you were scheduled with so I can help you resolve this?
Fantastic experience: I am finishing up drive rite school, and I think the instructors were very professional and very helpful. They are very knowledgeable and great at preparing younger drivers.
Thanks Ben glad we can help you on your goal of good driving.
Negative experience: I wouldn't take this driving class again. Craig Smith (the instructor) was rude and only gave 5 minute breaks. Also, he kept bullying a girl in the class. class was small and seats were too close together. Do yourself a favor and find another one
Wade,
I explained that I would try to keep us on time so we could finish on time. When people come back from a break late, then I can either shorten all the breaks by a few minutes or go ahead with longer breaks. That means the class would get out later. I am sure most would prefer not to be there any longer than they have to.
As for the seats being tight. They were. This class had people who were scheduled for a class when we had the snow. That class got canceled. Some of those people had deadlines to get done and had to move to this class. I am sorry it was tight but I was trying to keep people from losing their license due to a deadline.
As for the girl I was "bullying" , I told everyone the rules. Simply pay attention watch the videos. She was not doing that. She was doodling on her paper, looking out the window, trying to use her smart watch. Reminding her to pay attention is not bullying, it is making sure people do what they are supposed to be doing.
People, like yourself, wind up having to take this class because of different reasons. Most are because they got caught braking a law. I try to provide the lowest cost class in the state. Negative experience: I would not recommend this class. The instructor (craig) was arrogant and rude. Only got 5 minute breaks and the seats were too together. Google another driving school class.
Hi Justin Chaniott,
Sorry that ticket class was not enjoyable. I explained that I would try to keep us on time so we could finish on time. Since people came back from a break late, then I had one of two options, either shorten all the breaks by a few minutes or go ahead with longer breaks. Longer breaks means the class would get out much later. I am sure most would prefer not to be here any longer than they have to.
The seats were too tight, but here is why. We recently had to cancel a class due to weather, and some of those people had deadlines to get done and had to move to this class. I am sorry it was tight but I was trying to keep people from losing their license due to a deadline.
I am sorry if you felt I was arrogant or rude. I wish you would have said something during the class and we could have discussed.
I know people don't want to be here. Most people are downright angry they have to come, but please don't take your frustration out on me. I am only trying to provide the class at the lowest cost to you. People, like yourself, wind up having to take this class because of different reasons. Most are because they got caught braking a law. Fantastic experience: Both my kids went through the new driver program. Both took this class very seriously and still refer back to what they had learned in class exspecially when they see someone not following the rules. Both really liked their instructors and concider them friends. As their mother I am so happy they went through this program. I know I couldn’t have taught them this much info in the time I would of had to teach them. It also made picking up their licence so much easier! A very good experience over all and very afordable.
Fantastic experience: Great experience with Drive Rite Knoxville. They held Billy to a higher standard than he wanted, it paid off! He is a very good driver!
Fantastic experience: I went to this driving school after my last speeding ticket and really got a lot out of it. Mr. Smith was very knowledgeable and professional. Overall the class was a great experience. Ignore the negative reviews. Yes, he expects you to show up on time, but other than that you should have no issues. Highly recommend to anyone with a recent speeding ticket or just anyone needing to improve their driving skills (which is most people around here).
Fantastic experience: I took drivers ED here and it was a wonderful program. The woman teaching the class was firm but extremely kind and helpful. You could tell she really cared about the students and that they did well and were prepared for the road. Craig was my driver and I think he was awesome! I was taken down almost every type of road I may have possibly had to ever drive including the interstate and one ways. I may not be the best driver out there but I promise I’m more educated than most.... or so it seems. I highly recommend this business and class to anyone, no matter the age if they have never taken the corse. Job well done Drive Rite!
Fantastic experience: My eldest child took part in the classes of this school and as a parent I felt the school prepared her exceptionally well. I highly recommend this school so much, I'll be sending my other daughter's there too. The school cares for their students in the class (even bought them pizza one time) and out (in the one-on-one drive time). Trustworthy, expendable, top notch.
We do care and are so glad she had a great experience.
Fantastic experience: I sent my son through this driving school before he got his drivers license. I highly recommend this service. The staff was very professional and gave this Mother complete piece of mind.
Thank you, So glad we could help with the instruction that would give you and your son that piece of mind. Be Safe, Craig
Fantastic experience: My son went to Drive-Rite Driving School. I fell in love with the owners. Not only were they very professional and great instructors, they care about their students personally. I would recommend everyone to this school.
Thank you Ms. Johnson. Danny is a great guy. We enjoyed helping him and you, I know this was a difficult task for you to attempt and we were glad to help.
Fantastic experience: I have had two of my children complete the school. Both are very good drivers! Craig did a great job teaching them. Without question I will be sending the third kid to his school when it’s time. Thanks !
Negative experience: If I could give this business no stars, I would. Craig treated everyone in his class horribly. He was rude, condescending, and belittling. If you want a driver education class that will treat you with respect, I'd recommend finding another driver's course from another company. He makes me want to start my own driver education business so that I can show people how it's done the right way. Just awful all-around. 0/5 stars
Hi Aaron, I waited to speak to you again after I made contact about your above comments. I reached out to help find out what I said that was rude and apologize. Again I am sorry your wife had a bad experience and I do understand the pressures she was under. I felt as I did need to answer this on here since there may be some confusion for people.
First Aaron's wife, Holly Parris was the person who attended class. When I start the class I explain the simple rules. One of which is when we take a break I will tell everyone how long it is so we can get back in time and stay on track so we can finish on time. No one wants to have to come to a ticket class, and no one wants to stay any longer than they have to. I tell everyone we won't start until everyone is back in place, phones away, and ready to listen to the presentation. Holly came back late. I said to her, "You are not making many friends right now, you need to come back on time, you are going to make everyone have to stay late." She said she was dealing with a family issue on the phone.
I told Aaron I was sorry to have hurt Holly's feelings. I know she didn't want to be there. He said she was on the phone with him at the time and that their daughter was having a migraine. I told him she probably should have spoke with me privately and I would have suggested she reschedule and go deal with her daughter. That didn't happen. So he wrote this for his wife. I am sorry I sometimes come off gruff but like I told Aaron I have heard a lot in 30+ years of doing these ticket classes.
Negative experience: The instructor Julius Craig Smith would not allow me back into drivers safety class after lunch when I accidentally was 10 minutes late due to traffic. I do not recommend this school even though it is cheap.
Mr Reid, I told everyone that we would be taking a 30 minute lunch. I told everyone to be back and in place at 2:15 p.m. I also told everyone that there are restaurants that you could walk to and eat in that amount of time. Your assertion that you were 10 minutes late is not quite accurate. We waited for more than 10 minutes before I locked the door and started instructing. You were 17 minutes late. There were 15 other people who ate and made it back at the correct time.
Part of the instruction that is included in this class is time management. This is because some people wind up here for that very reason, trying to speed because they did not budget enough time to make it to their destination in time. That is why I give everyone exact times for breaks and for lunch break. This class is about all the people who had to attend it. Delaying the class any longer affected everyone in the class. Unfortunately there are absolutes in life. A deadline to be back is just that, a deadline to be back.
As I told everyone at the beginning of the class I am fair but also FIRM.
If you wish to reschedule to finish the class please contact our office M-F 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
