Fantastic experience: As someone who had never driven before, I was quite nervous about learning to drive. But I was incredibly lucky to have Mr. Li as my instructor. He was extremely professional and clear in his explanations, which helped me pass my road test much faster than I expected. The driving school itself is also very well-organized and professional — everything from scheduling lessons to booking the test was smooth and efficient. Highly recommend this school!

Negative experience: When I went there for an inquiry, the receptionist was very indifferent and didn't speak to me proactively. When I asked where to get the learner permit test, he didn't tell me to search online but instead directed me to ask at the New York Department of Transportation.

Fantastic experience: I had never touched a steering wheel before, but after just five lessons, I passed my road test on the first try. Big kudos to my instructor, Mr. Li, who was incredibly friendly, patient, and professional.

Negative experience: This was a long overdue review back when I was trying to get my Drivers License years back. Most of the times during the driving lessons, my instructor would casually let me drive around Manhattan during practice and would lightly critique me. Everything started off just great and they used a decent new type of car for me to practice. But when it was time to take the dreaded road test, this unveiled bad things from this driving school. First was the appointment scheduling for the road test. I wasn’t asked for which location I’d like to conduct my road test and this was decided in a wide slot available area, in Red Hook Brooklyn, NY. They didn’t ask for my preference and went ahead charging me a cash upfront fee for the road test booking. But another reason, and this is a big one when I started my road test - they would switch out the car I’ve been practicing with from this school for another. This was strange to me and if I have a firm understanding when you practice driving, you stick with the car you’ve always been practicing with. This is why I believe the last 1 star review where people would fail 95% of the time from this school was accurate to the T. Each time I’ve failed my road test, this school would demand more money requesting to rebook my test experience from the beginning. I didn’t understand the Chinese language or knew how to speak it. And not having this capability to know how to speak it, I think my driving experience at this place didn’t get the same type good treatment. These were my 2 cents towards this driving school. After several failed tries from my road test, I finally had a sudden realization they kept asking me to pay for extra driving packages. They weren’t too shy about pinpointing that right away after I failed my road test, to purchase more classes. There’s plenty of better driving schools out there. Mark my words.

Fantastic experience: Mr. Chan and Mr. Fok are great teachers. They both have great experience in teaching auto-driving skills with patience. Both office staff are accommodating in arranging time and schedules for tests. Moreover, teachers and staff there will comfort students before they take the road test. It's an excellent auto-driving school.

Fantastic experience: Took driving lessons last year and was very pleased with the cost and the teaching. English isn’t the first language so communication is terse and to the point but who needs chit chat when they get the job done. I was scared and the streets are so narrow in Chinatown but my instructor was tough, super helpful and a real smart alec, funny without trying; which helped because I was so tense. He is the reason I passed my test. Worth the effort. Highly recommend

Fantastic experience: I used to be very resistant about driving and especially had no confidence I could drive in NYC!! my friends recommended this driving school, so I decided to try it. I highly recommend Coach Li; he is very patient and would practice each lesson based on the requirements of the actual test. Even though you have never touched a car before (like myself) or have no confidence, you should trust him because he made driving easier, and you learn super fast even after 2-3 classes. I bought the 10-course package as a first-time learner, $350 in total and includes two road test attempts. I passed on the second attempt (which means you just need 6 days, 2 courses/day, then you can pass) ! I wish everyone good luck!

Fantastic experience: I wanted a hassle-free experience within walking distance from my apartment and a low cost package deal w/experienced teachers whose goal is to prep you to pass the road test. Their no-frills operation (no website, no online payment, no email) worked for me. Simply show up, check out their price list and pay in-person the old school way. Kelly and Andy try their best to coordinate lessons based on your schedule, walk you to the car for your first lesson and resolve any issues as needed. Despite the fact that I don't speak or understand Chinese, I took a chance with them. Initially, I thought this would be an issue but driving instruction is pretty straightforward in any language...signal, turn left, turn right, full stop, yield, etc. Mr. Chen taught me a near foolproof parallel parking method (1-2-1). His lesson route is pretty consistent which gives you a sense of confidence while Huo varies his routes allowing for more spontaneity. I found taking lessons w/both instructors gave me a well-rounded experience driving in the city. Feedback in English is short and simple...sometimes a terse "FAIL" when I mess up (for example, touching the curb while parallel parking). All comments were very constructive and helped me become an alert and better driver. Thank you Kelly and Andy for being efficient and organized; friendly and helpful! Most of all, many many thanks to Mr. Chen and Huo for their patient instruction as you helped me pass the test on my first try! I highly recommend Canal Driving School but if you're not sure, try a lesson (1.5 hours for $60 - actually two lessons at once; perfect amount of time) to see if they're a good fit for you.

Fantastic experience: My husband and I both study here. He passed the road test the second time, and I passed the test the first time. The Instructor is very experienced. As long as you follow the exercises taught by the Instructor， the exam is easy to pass. My Instructor is Huo，Strict and experienced, he can accurately point out the problems in your driving, so as to avoid making mistakes during the road test, so I passed the road test once.

Positive experience: Super helpful and relatively good price for driving lessons compared to other driving schools. The staff helped me set up a last minute road test appt and I cannot thank them enough for that. The driving lessons are great for those who are learning to drive for the first time or need a refresher. I had Instructor Chen and Instructor Huo. Both ate great. I recommend both instructors for different teaching styles and different driving advice!

He taught me to parallel park in a very simple way and helped me brush up my driving skills gently and ease-fully. He is a wonderful driving teacher. I also enjoyed dealing with Miss Perry and Andy who were always ready to get me extra classes if needed, call and confirm timings. They were very efficient and caring. One word to summarise - Caring. Fantastic experience: Coach Lee is very patient and professional! He doesn’t speak English that much but he knows what the examiner wants to see during the road test. Pointed out my mistakes and helped me to correct them. Also taught me some important “tricks” for the test. Passed the test at first try! People work in the office are very friendly and responsible as well!

Fantastic experience: My daughter just passed her first road test this morning. Thanks to Cannel Driving School. She had no former driving experience and took a 15-classes package, which included both Mr. Chen and Mr. Huo as her instructors, who are totally in different teaching styles. Both instructors are excellent and experienced. No good or bad, but pick the one who's suitable to you. My child learnt from both of them and get it. Last, "good instructions plus lucks" made her succeed. Highly recommend this school and give it a try!

Fantastic experience: I started with another driving school and got terrible experiences and developed bad practices for driving. I am lucky enough to meet Mr Chen, who is extremely patient, willing to answer the questions and explain the logic behind the signs/rules. Some practices he taught me impressed the examiner. As a person who is a bit afraid of speed and never thought of driving, I really appreciate his patience of helping me practice again and again. The office stuff are nice as well: they sent good notices a day before classes, warm and encouraging, and very accommodating. Highly recommended.

Fantastic experience: I took 10 lessons with mr. Huo and passed the test from the first try. He doesn’t speak much, only gives the valuable info, which I appreciated. He also taught me the easy way of parallel parking! And if you can drive in Chinatown, you can drive anywhere :) and the school is cheap.

Negative experience: I can't believe this school has 4.6 stars/5. Tu put it simply : If you don't understand chinese dont choose this school. If you want to pass your road test easily don't choose this school. Instructors (whoever they are) don't teach you how to pass the test. They might teach you how to drive a bit at least but the DMV road test doesn't really care about knowing how to turn left or right, it's about processes. Most of the candidates i know from this school (95%) failed their road test. I've seen at least 7 candidates failing twice with this school and at least 3 failing 3 three times. The candidates i encountered with this school were failing continuously their road test but of course the school will tell you that it's not their fault... The very minority of them who passed must be the ones leaving reviews....

Fantastic experience: My teacher was Huo I think. Awesome teacher, we had a lot of fun. I almost miss the school. Anyway I took the license in a month, failed two road tests and third try I got it. All within a month in July. Thank you for everything!

Negative experience: I am not sure the review was real. I went overthere and they force me to pay cash for 280. I told them, I dont have cash. I need to pay with my cc. They dont want. Very strange.

Fantastic experience: Great school. Both instructors I had were good. I particularly recommend this school if you are an expat in the US .They will provide the quickest way of getting you on the roads here and all for a reasonable price.

Fantastic experience: Took 14 classes with instructor Hsuo then last two with Chen. Both were great, passed first time. Recommended two friends there, and they both passed as well. Highly recommended. Learned a lot, did all my mistakes during the classes but never got yelled and fully prepared during test day.

Positive experience: The driving instructor is very friendly but spoke very little amount of english. However, since I understood Chinese I was able to understand majority of the advice that was given to me. Took 16 lessons and was able to pass the road test.

The left 15 I took with Instructor Huo, he is strict, but that's the greatest part! I got to train myself with better turns, better observation and judgement! Thank for all your help!
