Fantastic experience: As an international driver living in NY, I was looking to obtain a NY driver’s license. After checking other reviews, I was convinced that this was the right place for me and was not disappointed. George is punctual, patient, straight to the point and overall a great teacher. He identifies your weak spots, gives you tips to correct them, and gets you to repeat the procedure(s) multiple times to undo bad habits. He tells you everything you need to know to ace your road test and is able to adapt his teaching to the student. All of that is done in a friendly/safe environment with jokes every now and then to lighten the mood. You truly feel at ease with George and he genuinely cares about your success. You can also tell that George is a well-respected figure in the neighborhood as he gets frequently greeted by the locals. If you are a seasoned driver, I still recommend taking a couple of classes to get used to the vehicle and get the practice you need for the different skills and maneuvers. You will be taking the road test in Red Hook, which offers a similar setup to the area you’ll be taking your lessons at in Manhattan. Overall, I had a great experience with this driving school and highly recommend it to anyone looking to get their driver’s license.

Some things that he teaches in his classes are not just essential for passing the test, its for learning safe and responsible driving. Fantastic experience: Over the summer, I enrolled in the 5 hour pre-licensing course, 15 lessons and road test exam package and was finally able to pass it after several previously failed attempts. George (or "Sarge" as I like to refer him as) initially assessed my driving skills then tailored lessons, leading up to the road test, to address the observed weaknesses for improvement. They were considerate as well as mindful about my availability and created an accommodating schedule around it. What I personally found most helpful were the driving assessments that mimicked the seriousness of the actual road test but in a less-intense manner. Family owned and embedded into the community that they serve!

Fantastic experience: 1st SGT is one of the best driving schools I've been to and I've had my share of driving schools over the years. It did take me awhile to get my license, however George's teaching style, you will rarely find in NYC since a lot of driving schools will do the bare minimum, just for the money. I would recommend everyone of any age to learn how to drive with him. He is very detailed and he can be tough, but if the end result is you getting your license, then it would have all been worth it. He is very friendly and knows everyone in the neighborhood, and his game plan is not to just teach you how to pass the test, but also to be a good driver in general, by being informative and reinforces safety protocols to live by. Many driving schools in NYC will give you an old driving video for the 5 hr pre-licensing course and you'd only need to watch 15 min to get your certificate, however George actually uses that time to teach important skills and the rules of the road which will help you understand the road better and avoid getting points off during the road test. Driving in NYC can be very scary with the constant road fixtures, jaywalkers, bikers/scooters and reckless driving, and so George can be helpful when it comes to gaining confidence to driving in such a busy city. George and his wife make it very easy to schedule lessons, which are usually scheduled close together, along with a road test, to make the lessons more efficient but obviously don't only count on the lessons to learn how to drive, you definitely need to drive more on your own as well. I've been fooled by a bunch of driving schools that have 5 star ratings , it's always trial and error with them, but with 1st SGT, it's a confirmed really great school for a complete newbie to someone with some driving experience. I would highly, highly, highly recommend!

Negative experience: I understand the multiple 5-star ratings, but personally, I had a bad experience a few weeks ago. So it's a driving academy business with only 1 employee (the owner). I walk up to the storefront and try to sift through all the information posted on the door and windows, but I get lost. The owner happens to be there with a student in a vehicle, hence the "Out on a class" sign on the door; the shop is closed. I walk up and ask him politely if he's George, to which he replies, 'Yes.' I then ask about the services offered, and he immediately snaps back "well you just took a picture of it, didn't you?" I did. But I was taken aback right away. I felt as if I, as a consumer, didn't have a right to ask questions. I said yes but just proceeded to ask anyway, as I stood there in the middle of the road beside the car, talking to the owner who was sitting in the front passenger seat next to the student. I tell him I am looking to contract whatever is necessary to obtain my driver's license, briefly explaining that I already had a driver's license, but it had expired, since I wished to clarify I did not need driving lessons since that is what I mostly saw posted on the shop. I reaffirm that I am looking only for the pre-licensing course and the road test since I already know how to drive. Instantly, he snaps back again: "You know how many times I hear that? That's what they all say." Seriously? Watch your tone-of-voice, please. What horrible customer service. I took my business elsewhere. And yes, I DON'T need driving lessons. I KNOW how to drive. I KNOW how to stop at the red light white line before a crosswalk, unlike MOST New Yorkers. I have a driver's license from Colombia, Canada, and New York (the expired one), so don't tell me, "we all say that." Sheesh. Unsure how you have all good reviews. By the looks of it, these academies aren't teaching properly since some New Yorkers are some of the worst drivers. Some New Yorkers literally don't know where or how to properly stop at a red light. They love creeping onto the crosswalk for some reason. They also love blocking the intersection and causing gridlock because they don't understand that even though a light is green, it doesn't mean you have to go through the intersection if the other side is jammed. I think you can tell, now, that I can drive. 2/5 stars for you, sir.

Fantastic experience: George is the best driving instructor. Over the course of the lessons (10 or 15 lesson packages) you go through all you need to know to pass the road test smoothly. He makes you practice until you are ready and gives a very clear and honest assessment of whether you are ready or not before taking the test. Very knowledgeable about driving safely, the road test, and teaching foreign drivers. Military-grade efficiency (he taught in the army before and it shows). Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: George is a great instructor. Very informed instructor, and a very understanding person. He will guide you through each part of the road test that you will take in Red Hook. I got the ten lesson package, and it worked for me, but if you are not confident in your ability to learn quickly, the 15 package will surely do the trick. He gives you detailed instruction on each majour part of the road test, especially parallel parking and three point turning. Basically, take your lessons with George. You can’t go wrong. He will instruct you based on your particular needs, and he will make sure you pass your road test.

George is an excellent instructor, and I greatly appreciated his patience with me as a skittish driver. Though it definitely took me a while to get over my nerves, George was always very supportive and encouraging. His wife was also incredibly accommodating when it came to scheduling lessons, which as a student I also greatly appreciated. You’re in good hands here!

Fantastic experience: I got a total of 20 lessons + the 5 hour pre-licensing. I had zero background with cars, I rarely even sat in one as a kid which proved to be a big issue getting the basics of driving. However, George was able to guide me through the basics very smoothly. I was very rough on the edges by my 15th lesson so we had a talk and I decided to get another 5 lessons. It was a good decision as I was able to pass the road test and everything that came up during the lessons was on the road test, George teaches you everything and makes sure that you know what is exactly going to be on the road test. He is very firm like the other reviewers said, but don't be scared because he is a very nice person! His wife manages the logistics/scheduling and is fast and efficient at it, just let her know your schedule and she'll work with it.

You take the 5 hour course over Zoom, then do 5 hour long driving courses around 2 Bridges/Chinatown, and then go to Brooklyn for the driving exam. Fantastic experience: As an International Driver who is having to take the NY road test after many years of driving in the UK and Asia I found the 5 lesson package invaluable. George is an excellent instructor who guided me through the nuances of driving in NY, plus pointing out the (many) habits I had developed over the years. The schedule was created with my own working hours in mind and the test was scheduled early in the morning - so I could still get back to work if I needed to. What George teaches is specifically for the road test so when it's time to take the test, it feels familiar and you are prepared. Another thing to note is that this school is very accommodating when it comes to scheduling. Fantastic experience: For me, learning to drive in New York was nerve wracking. I put it off for years. But George was incredibly patient, attentive, and clear as a driving instructor. I opted for 15 lessons with him after failing at another school by 80+ points. By the end of my lessons with George, I was MUCH more confident. He clearly explains the basics (parallel parking, safe turns), which of your habits will lead to lost points on the test, and even drives you to the test site early so you get the lay of the land. And yes, I PASSED!!! Couldn’t have done it without George. Highly recommend him.

Fantastic experience: I passed my test yesterday thanks to George! I've always lived in cities and never drove before so I took 15 lessons with George that covered everything I needed to know in the first 8 lessons, after that it was a matter of practice and fine tuning. I also completed the 5-hr pre-licensing course with George, which is a prerequisite to road lessons. The roads I practiced on are similar to the roads at the Red Hook road test site so it was familiar even though I had never been to the road test site before. Also, I used the car I practiced in (Mercedes medium SUV) for the test (past reviews say that some instructors charge extra to use their car, while this school doesn't). Georgie was patient, funny and a great teacher! His wife who manages the office helped me reschedule 3 classes I missed when I fell ill with COVID (all 15 lessons were scheduled in up until the test date). Overall the process to get signed up and registered with 1st SGT was easy! My lessons were spread over 2 months (lessons are backtracked from the road test date). Keep in mind this is a small business run by George and his wife - the best way to communicate is by email, payment in person. Show up on time and try not to miss lessons as George is the only instructor and his schedule seems to book up fast! Note: You MUST have your learner permit to sign up for lessons (apply on DMV website).

Fantastic experience: I grew up in NYC so I didn’t have a need to learn how to drive until I decided it was time. Finding a highly rated, trustworthy, and excellent driving school in nyc is tough; add to that finding it & driving in Manhattan. After researching & reading consistently positive reviews about 1st SGT Driving Academy, I decided to sign up for a 15 class package, including the pre-licensing course and scheduled road test (with the car). From day one to the road test date, George (instructor) and his wife were extremely professional, attentive, and responsive. George has an excellent ability to teach (practice, practice, practice) and infuse every lesson with best practices that defuse fear and instill confidence. The baseline knowledge and practice you get from every lesson drives up your confidence and prepares you for the road test (and to continue practicing driving in the future). I know it’s not a guarantee that you’ll pass on your first try (thankfully I did!!) but even if you have to retake the test, you’ll feel confident and equipped by taking lessons with George. That is all to say, if you are a first time driver or need refreshers, please support this business! They are a model business in Lower Manhattan and if I had to do it again (&recommend to friends), I would take driving lessons with George! A+ in satisfaction!

He's truly a master instructor having taught driving skills in the army for all classes of military vehicles. Fantastic experience: I just got my driver license through George's academy two days ago. He was very professional and on the point when he taught me what I needed to know in order to pass the road test. Everything he mentioned was actually practiced during the test, and none was practiced that he didn't teach me. The price he charges is also very reasonable. He cares about his students passing the test and learning how to me a good and safe driver more than anything. On top of driving lessons, he also gives very useful and thoughtful life lessons on the house :) I can proudly recommend this academy to anyone I love who needs driving education. Fantastic experience: I was searching online for driving schools in Manhattan in order to take couple of driving classes and schedule the road test when I came across 1st SGT Driving Academy. I decided to go and give it a try and I absolutely do NOT regret it!!!They were very quick with answering my questions over an email and after finding out more details about my experience and situation were able to suggest a package for me. Very friendly priced, competent, polite and willing to work with everyones situation. I was 7 month pregnant at the time and I thought it will be challenging for me. George who is an owner and also an amazing driving instructor encouraged me to move forward. Jean, his wife immediately booked me in for 5hour pre licensing course which was done online by George via zoom and I got my certificate in 3 days!!! She after booked the driving test for me and I decided to take 5 driving classes with George to practice my driving. The knowledge you get is exactly what you need to pass your driving test. George stayed on top of every smallest detail and made my parallel parking and 3point turn skills immaculate. I passed my test yesterday and it went very smooth and stress free. Very grateful to 1st SGT Driving Academy - George and Jean! Thank you guys! I can't recommend this school enough! They also offer 6hour defensive driving course which can reduce your insurance after you get your licence and the car.

Fantastic experience: George is a patient, kind, knowledgeable and amazing instructor. He’s funny and fun to talk to, and I thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from his methodical and structured teaching style. He fully prepared me for my road test and structured the lessons in perfect prep for the road test date. He provides secret tips and tricks that are super helpful and useful and that would definitely be beneficial with continued driving down the road. His sweet wife handles the scheduling; she’s very prompt in responding and molded my lessons/schedule according to my road test date so that I would be fully prepared up to, the day before, and day of my road test (they even book your road test for you and allow you to use George’s car for the test by the way- which most driving schools charge EXTRA for). His Mercedes SUV is such a pleasure to learn in and drive as well- added perk! It’s been such a pleasure learning with George, and I’d recommend all who want to learn how to drive in NYC (or refresh their driving skills) here. 1st SGT Driving Academy is a small, veteran owned business run by George and his wife, and if you’re considering driving lessons, definitely come here.

Fantastic experience: Best driving school! I took 10 lessons with George and it was worth every penny. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I would’ve passed! His wife handles all the scheduling and she works around your schedule. They schedule your classes based off of when your road test appointment is so you’re not practicing months before your exam unlike other driving schools. George is patient, extremely knowledgeable and has many years of experience. He makes sure you know what you’re doing and that you’re confident while doing it. If you’re a new driver, a foreign driver or even an experienced driver I 100% recommended taking classes with George. You won’t regret it.

Fantastic experience: BEST DRIVING SCHOOL!! I had 15 lessons with instructor George, although I missed a few I still passed my test the first time. He’s a very good teacher, patient and funny. The school was also very accommodating to my schedule so the lessons were scheduled perfectly for me. 10/10 recommend. I suggest this driving school to everyone I know.

He is also different from other instructors in that he is personable and will remember your weaknesses and help you overcome them, rectifying any driving errors you may have made in the past. He will work around your schedule. The level of patience he has is amazing and is perfect for anyone looking to drive. You will learn many hints, tips and tricks that will not only help you pass your road test but also make you a vigilant driver in the future, as you will become acquainted with a variety of unpredictable factors on the road (double parkers, forklifts, pedestrians crossing) during your lessons. You will become a well rounded driver more than ready for your test.

It was a fun experience and I felt comfortable like if I was driving with my dad. He’s stern when he needs to be but also funny and gives great advice. You also get to use his Mercedes for the test and it’s a very convenient car , definitely makes it easier for you. Fantastic experience: Amazing instructor. Structured and diligent but also comforting and never too harsh. Took 10 lessons with him and was able to pass my the road test on the first try after years of not driving (finally took the test at 25). Everything from scheduling classes to the classes themselves went very smoothly. I can't say enough good, highly recommend.

Fantastic experience: Sgt. George is an excellent and caring instructor. At 35, I had never driven a car before--not even in a parking lot--and thought it was too late for me to ever be competent at the wheel. But thanks to Sgt. George's patience, detailed explanations, and methodical preparation, I was able to learn how to drive in two weeks. In fact, I passed the road test on my first try! He gave me all sorts of tips and tricks that helped me remember what to do for the test and how to stay safe on the road. He really knows the test and DMV system inside out. Sgt. George is also a genuinely kind and wise man, who really helped me gain confidence in myself as a driver. Learning with him was an empowering experience that allowed me to let go of my fears and find the joy and relaxation in driving. A nice perk: his amazing Mercedes is a pleasure to drive. His wife, who manages all the appointments, is also super organized and lovely to interact with. The 10-lesson package I took was honestly worth every penny, and I don't think I'll ever forget Sgt. Fantastic experience: My husband and I both took the 5-hour pre-licensing course, as well as pre-test assessments and lessons. We both passed the test on our first attempt, thanks to George's teaching and guidance. He is an excellent teacher and very focused, able to teach with great precision exactly the skills you need to learn/master in order to pass. He knows the test inside and out, which helped us anticipate the test conditions tremendously. The office was very responsive and flexible whenever we needed to schedule or reschedule lessons. We can't recommend 1st SGT enough!

Fantastic experience: So I’m British living in New York. Been living here for 4 years so decided to finally get my NY driving licence (I already have a UK one). Used George for the 5hr safety course (virtual over zoom), then had a 45min practice lesson before I had road test (using his vehicle). Passed road test with 100% (no errors) definitely thanks to George. Would recommend he knows his stuff! Nice guy too and you can tell he looks after his community.

Fantastic experience: Definitely the best decision I’ve made in regards to my driving was choosing this driving academy! I’m active duty military and I needed to get my license before leaving the U.S. and George made it happen. I highly recommend to all military and anyone else trying to get better at driving or trying to get their license to give this driving academy a chance, couldn’t be happier!
