Trusted by schools and families across the Twin Cities, we prepare over 14,000 teens each year to drive safely, responsibly, and defensively – because your teen’s safety comes first.

The first step in scheduling behind the wheel lessons is to register your Instruction Permit number with us. Login to your student account to register your permit.

Be aware: a $75 cancellation fee applies if you cancel within 24 hours of your scheduled lesson. Weekends and holidays don’t count toward the 24-hour window. For example, a BTW lesson on Mon at 3.00pm would need to be cancelled before Fri at 3.00pm to avoid the $75 cancellation fee.

Unfortunately, due to high demand of Safeway Driving School services, Safeway Driving School is prioritizing Behind The Wheel lessons for students that took Classroom with Safeway Driving School. We will continue to accept Behind The Wheel Only students who have been home schooled or moving to the metro area from out of state.

The 50-hour practice driving requirement can be reduced to 40 hours if the parent or guardian attends a Parent Class and receives a completion certificate.

Experiencia negativa: Everything about our experience with Safeway has been negative. We did the online course. It was poorly designed from an instructional perspective, technologically glitchy which required constant content repetition to get through it, the narration was dull and not engaging. My son spent more than 10 extra hours just trying to get through the content without glitching. He suffered through but learned little. For behind the wheel lessons, they canceled on us twice on the day of the lesson, costing us weeks from his timeline. (You have to wait a certain period between lessons to progress.) We found no value in any of the lessons online, and only minimally from behind the wheel. It’s an expensive hoop to jump through and Safeway just made it all so much more difficult for us.

Experiencia negativa: Very difficult to get behind the wheel appointment. Because of that, my child probably won’t get her license this year. Disappointed and frustrated. The call desk service is also poorly managed. Won’t recommend.

Experiencia negativa: For our first son Safeway worked because he himself was in a rush and plowed through the training etc. With our 2nd son he has been more conservative and wanted more practice between lessons which extended his time. By being careful and cautious we now have to pay an additional $50 to extend the time he can take behind the wheel? Why would it cost $50 to let him proceed at his own pace instead of rushing him through it? I would recommend finding another driving school.

Safeway Driving School

We agree with you but Safeway is following a state policy. We explain it in our parent communication but the state wants teens with Instruction Permits to get licensed instruction. Most driving schools in the state follow the state's guideline that driving lessons must be completed within a year of completing classroom instruction. Safeway has the same policy and the $50 fee to extend that date (the state allows two extensions) is meant to motivate parents to do as the state desires. Safeway is unfortunately obligated to notify the state of students who are not doing their driving lessons and student will risk the cancellation of their permit, so the state is serious about teen instruction. We think the state's public safety goals are valid but we think your complaint is valid, as well. Remember, just because a student has taken three 2-hour driving lessons does not mean they are ready to take the Road Test and drive on their own. Parents are free to practice drive with their teen for as long as they wish after taking three lessons and should never feel rushed to have the teen take the Road Test.
