Top Driver is dedicated to supporting teens throughout their entire driver's license journey. From classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training to obtaining a learner's permit and passing the road test, we are here to provide the resources and support necessary to succeed.
To enroll, students must reach the age of 15 on or before the final scheduled classroom session of their program. On the Top Driver website after entering your zip code, select your Top Driver location and input your date of birth to view the classes for which you are eligible.
The classroom program comprises 30 hours of instruction divided into 15 two-hour sessions. The duration of the classroom program ranges from 3 1/2 weeks to 15 weeks, depending on the frequency of the sessions. Weekday classes meet for 2 or 4 days per week, while weekend classes typically meet once a week.
Teens enrolled in an approved Driver Education program become eligible for an Instruction Permit at age 15. The Instruction Permit is valid for two years from the date of issue.
Once students obtain their Instruction Permit and enter the permit number in their Top Driver Signals account, they can begin scheduling behind-the-wheel lessons.
Behind-the-wheel training involves a student operating the training vehicle alongside our expert instructors. Sessions are scheduled in one-hour increments and can be paired with an observation lesson. This is when a student observes another student’s driving lesson from the backseat of the training vehicle.
Students must pass both a written classroom final exam and an in-vehicle evaluation to successfully complete their Driver Education Program. If the student is unable to pass the exam in two attempts, they must retake the classroom phase of training at a cost of $200
To be eligible for the road test, students must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice (including at least 10 hours at night) in addition to their Driver Education coursework.
For over 22 years, Top Driver has been committed to keeping our roads safe offering state-certified Driver Education classes for teens and adults across the midwest.

A hard copy certificate of completion is not mandatory. Prior to visiting a Secretary of State Facility to apply for a driver’s license, completion of driver education must be updated/posted to the applicant’s driving record.
Students must hold their permit for a minimum of 9 months from the date of issue. Additional requirements can be viewed on the Secretary of State Facility Checklist.
All 18, 19, 20-year-olds are required to complete a six-hour adult driver education course before obtaining an Illinois driver’s license, if the person has not previously held a driver’s license or successfully completed the classroom portion of a traditional driver education course.
Top Driver offers adult training programs starting at $49 with the 6-hour online driving course. For pricing details on behind the wheel lessons and road test services, please call us at 1 (800) 374-8373.
To be eligible for in-car training, students must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Illinois Instruction Permit, Illinois Driver’s License, or a Driver’s License issued by your country of origin (International Driver’s Licenses are not accepted in Illinois). Students from out of the country may drive on their country of origin license for no more than 90 days after entering the country.
If you do not currently have a permit, we recommend taking our 6-hour online course to prepare for the Written Permit Exam at the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

4 months ago Experiencia fantástica: I signed my son up for the 10-course Specialized Driver Education Program because he is on the spectrum. I felt that 10 private one-on-one lessons with the same instructor and no one else in the car would be most beneficial to him. At the time, I felt the price was a bit steep, but after now completing all of the courses, I am so happy I signed him up! The instructor that he was assigned to, Jan Coules (sp?) was exceptional. She was kind, patient and answered any questions that either myself or my son had. If your child has ADHD and/or is on the spectrum, I highly recommend you give Top Driver a try. Jan Coules also used to be a grade school teacher so this was a plus too as she was very experienced in dealing with all types of kids. Thank you so much!!
5 months ago Experiencia fantástica: I have had a great experience with Top Driver. There was really in depth teaching in the classroom which helped me understand the rules of the road with ease. Also Mrs.Lisa has been a great driver instructor by teaching me all of the maneuver thoroughly; which made sure I would be a great driver. She has also thought me how to read the road and what to watch out for.

The class teaches us what to do in dire situations and how to not only be in control of the vehicle but how to be in control of yourself and your awareness while driving. 9 months ago Experiencia fantástica: Top Driver New Lenox was phenomenal. Lisa and Stephanie worked with us to make sure my son could get the behind the wheel hours he needed. The lessons were thorough and the instructors were encouraging. You could tell that my son’s instructor is also a junior high teacher. She explained things clearly, often specific areas that were good and areas to focus on. Lisa made my son’s final driving lessons such positive experiences. I highly recommend this location.

9 months ago Experiencia fantástica: I’ve learned a lot from this school, the whole experience was amazing and couldn’t have been any better. When I first started I was nervous and anxious because I didn’t know what to expect but everything turned out to be great. The driving instructors are very good at explaining and making you feel comfortable enough. 3 years ago Experiencia negativa: You will pay for driving lessons and classes that will not be available when you try to sign up. The classes are online and behind the wheel isn’t available for months. Then, they try to charge an additional $150 because there is a deadline that “you” missed. My suggestion is to use your local high school to avoid this nightmare. Update - I am not alone … I have done some research and found a lot of us not receiving behind the wheel lessons after full payment and then being charged $150 to continue on a wait list. Today 7/8, the next round of classes is September.. and the sign up for it is next month in august. I’m done with these games, I’m filing a complaint with the AG. I spoke to the Attorney General’s office today and they will look into all claims of these types of practices. If this has happened to you… Go online and file your complaint today.
We are sorry that you feel this way about our program. To clarify, our classes have been back in person for over a year (after using Webcast during COVID) and we have driving lessons available monthly at our locations. There are deadlines imposed by the Secretary of State which we have been very clear about and our managers have worked with students depending on their individual situations. We reviewed this student's account and he began the course in April 2021 and we do not see any attempts to contact us to schedule his required driving lessons. There are no notes in the account that would indicate he had any issue scheduling. The Completion Deadline (9 months) was 1/5/22 at which time a fee was automatically charged to the account since the program was not complete. We have been extremely flexible with our families in order for their teens to complete their program but if our Customer Service group did not receive a phone call or email from you then they would not know there was an issue. Please feel free to contact Customer Service at 800-374-8373 to discuss your options for completion of your son's program. Thank you

We are sorry that you have not had the customer service experience that our families deserve. As a company we are working diligently to hire and train additional qualified instructors which will help alleviate scheduling issues. Our Customer Service team has been short staffed as well due to COVID so they are working as many shifts as they can to address calls and emails. We hope you see improvement in the near future. 4 years ago Experiencia negativa: The classroom portion was ok. As a parent, I was able to view in car instruction. Let me tell you, the instructor barely gave my child the full hour in order to get us back to Top Driver at the end time. The instructor was just checking boxes. Alternatively, we switched to Ken's driving school for the in car instruction because Top Driver is overwhelmed with more appointments and not enough instructors. I had the opportunity to sit in on Kens driving. The instructors at Ken's, including Ken himself were by far above and beyond the competition. Ken and Mr Howe are true gems that care about the kids. You won't be disappointed.
I am sorry that you feel your teen did not receive the instruction that all our students deserve. It is difficult to review your situation without any student information but it appears your teen did not actually complete the behind the wheel part of our program? 4 years ago Experiencia fantástica: They were always on time, professional and communicated all needs to me directly. Janice was our instructor for the DMV test and was very professional— honest and fair. She didn’t let my daughter just “skate through” and deducted points when it was necessary. That’s how it should be!

4 years ago Experiencia fantástica: Our teen attended this school and we had a great experience. The classes were online due to COVID. The program was well organized and the website made it very easy to schedule behind the wheel instruction. Our instructors were always on time and gave good feedback. We also opted to take the Secretary of State road test with them and that was also a good experience. I would recommend this driving school.
