Top Driver is dedicated to supporting teens throughout their entire driver's license journey. From classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training to obtaining a learner's permit and passing the road test, we are here to provide the resources and support necessary to succeed.
To enroll, students must reach the age of 15 on or before the final scheduled classroom session of their program. On the Top Driver website after entering your zip code, select your Top Driver location and input your date of birth to view the classes for which you are eligible.
The classroom program comprises 30 hours of instruction divided into 15 two-hour sessions. The duration of the classroom program ranges from 3 1/2 weeks to 15 weeks, depending on the frequency of the sessions. Weekday classes meet for 2 or 4 days per week, while weekend classes typically meet once a week.
Teens enrolled in an approved Driver Education program become eligible for an Instruction Permit at age 15. The Instruction Permit is valid for two years from the date of issue.
Once students obtain their Instruction Permit and enter the permit number in their Top Driver Signals account, they can begin scheduling behind-the-wheel lessons.
Behind-the-wheel training involves a student operating the training vehicle alongside our expert instructors. Sessions are scheduled in one-hour increments and can be paired with an observation lesson. This is when a student observes another student’s driving lesson from the backseat of the training vehicle.
Students must pass both a written classroom final exam and an in-vehicle evaluation to successfully complete their Driver Education Program. If the student is unable to pass the exam in two attempts, they must retake the classroom phase of training at a cost of $200
To be eligible for the road test, students must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice (including at least 10 hours at night) in addition to their Driver Education coursework.
For over 22 years, Top Driver has been committed to keeping our roads safe offering state-certified Driver Education classes for teens and adults across the midwest.

A hard copy certificate of completion is not mandatory. Prior to visiting a Secretary of State Facility to apply for a driver’s license, completion of driver education must be updated/posted to the applicant’s driving record.
Students must hold their permit for a minimum of 9 months from the date of issue. Additional requirements can be viewed on the Secretary of State Facility Checklist.
All 18, 19, 20-year-olds are required to complete a six-hour adult driver education course before obtaining an Illinois driver’s license, if the person has not previously held a driver’s license or successfully completed the classroom portion of a traditional driver education course.

To be eligible for in-car training, students must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Illinois Instruction Permit, Illinois Driver’s License, or a Driver’s License issued by your country of origin (International Driver’s Licenses are not accepted in Illinois). Students from out of the country may drive on their country of origin license for no more than 90 days after entering the country.
If you do not currently have a permit, we recommend taking our 6-hour online course to prepare for the Written Permit Exam at the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

9 months ago Experiencia negativa: Classes were fine but it is impossible to schedule an in person lesson. Someone said the same in a review back in 2021. Clearly nothing has changed and they are refusing to hire enough driving instructors to fill their need. Go somewhere else if you need in person lessons. Unfortunately we are stuck with them now. So frustrating.

1 year ago Experiencia fantástica: I had Mr. Lucas as my teacher and he is a person who makes a boring class fun and interesting. Because of this I booked all 8 of my driving lessons with him and I genuinely looked forward to our conversations and just driving with him for a hour. He is a great guy and knows what he is doing.

3 years ago Experiencia fantástica: Christopher Lucas was the main driving instructor for my first child and we requested him for my second child. He is an excellent teacher inside the classroom and on the road. Mr. Lucas was able to adjust his teaching to fit whatever my kids needed at the time. They felt comfortable and safe with him. Many of their peers said the same about him. He communicated clearly with me and helped my kids get their licenses on time even with the restrictions of the pandemic.

Mr Lucas made sure that everybody in the class retained the class information and was paying attention. Not one kid didn’t pass the final exam in Mr. Lucas’s class and I am so great full I was able to be in a class with an amazing teacher

4 years ago Experiencia negativa: I would never recommend this program. It is literally impossible to schedule in person driving lessons via the portal they have in place. Nothing is ever available and if you call or email customer service, they just tell you to find a different location. Well, they are all connected so that does not help. I was unable to schedule in person driving lessons for over 2 months. I was told they have a shortage of drivers and that everyone is trying to cram their in person driving lessons into one time so there is no availability. They told me I have to pay an additional $150 to reinstate my son's account and schedule the remaining 4 in person driving lessons. The customer service reps, particularly Yvonne, are extremely unfriendly, not helpful and are definitely not in the business of solutions. I asked to speak with a manager and was told I have to send an email to the customer service email. I highly encourage you to read reviews of Top Driver before you think about signing up. There are plenty of other driving schools in the area.
We apologize for your frustration. We sent a letter to all active families to explain the current scheduling issues on 9/17/21. We apologize if you did not receive it. Scheduling is currently limited due to the hundreds of in-vehicle lessons that went unused during the first 9 months of this year. 4 years ago Experiencia fantástica: Services were provided perfectly, zero complaints. This driving school was able to accommodate me when other schools in the area said they couldn't. I definitely recommend this place, scheduling could be easier though

4 years ago Experiencia fantástica: I have absolutely no idea where any of these low reviews come from. I just graduated from Tob driver last week. As you all may know, being a new teen driver is really hard but with Top drivers instruction I saw instant improvement after each lesson. I hope to get my license in a few weeks and because of Top driver I feel prepared. Plus the instructors are incredibly kind and patient! You can tell they really care about the students. The customer service is also really good, with resonses coming within about a hour over email. Again I highly reccomend for any other teen drivers.

The instructors really want their students to learn and be safe, responsible drivers. I appreciate taking the class modules as it fit into my busy schedule.

5 years ago Experiencia fantástica: I First started taking the in class instructing at Loyola mainly by Chris Lucas in the Winter. I really enjoyed it because of his open and humorous personality. As I finished and got my permit I completed several driving lessons with Chris Lucas at the Wilmette Top Driver location. During this time my driving skills started to rapidly get stronger because of the great instruction by Chris Lucas. When I surpassed the 8 hours mandatory to pass that driving course my parents were in awe of Mr. Lucas’s ability to transform me into a great driver. So, as a result my Dad had signed me up for the 50 hour program with Chris Lucas. I am looking forward to completing this long course with him due to his awesome personality. If you are starting to book driving lessons I strongly encourage you to try lessons with Chris Lucas. I promise that you won’t be disappointed. What makes him stand out from the rest is that he will test your child’s Ability by letting them drive to different locations every time. By doing this it will progressively better their driving. 6 years ago Experiencia negativa: They have an extremely screwed up process for road driving appointments. They send separate emails for the same reasons at different times and then you have to pay if you can't decipher their screwed up process. Horrible but sharing the lesson for anyone that has to use this place.
We apologize that you did not receive the service that we expect for all of our Top Driver families. Our scheduling system sends out an automated email for each individual appointment so if a student is doing an observation and a driving lesson together they will indeed receive two emails. While that is noted in the emails and on our Signals Parent Portal perhaps it was missed in your instance. 9 years ago Experiencia negativa: Impossible to get a hold of anyone but an operator. No local phone number to call. 800 operators are not helpful and offer little assistance. During 4 calls I was on hold over 25 minutes.
10 years ago Experiencia fantástica: My daughter-in-law enrolled herself for driving course. She completed the programs without any bad experience. Instructor and teachers were quite fun and experienced. Instructor always showed up on time and will go extra mile for their students. She was quite happy with the instructors. The instructors are always happy, in good mood and ready to help their students. I certainly believe she is a Top Driver now just due to her instructors.
