Top Driver is dedicated to supporting teens throughout their entire driver's license journey. From classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training to obtaining a learner's permit and passing the road test, we are here to provide the resources and support necessary to succeed.
The classroom program comprises 30 hours of instruction divided into 15 two-hour sessions. The duration of the classroom program ranges from 3 1/2 weeks to 15 weeks, depending on the frequency of the sessions. Weekday classes meet for 2 or 4 days per week, while weekend classes typically meet once a week.
Teens enrolled in an approved Driver Education program become eligible for an Instruction Permit at age 15. The Instruction Permit is valid for two years from the date of issue.
Once students obtain their Instruction Permit and enter the permit number in their Top Driver Signals account, they can begin scheduling behind-the-wheel lessons. Behind-the-wheel training involves a student operating the training vehicle alongside our expert instructors. Sessions are scheduled in one-hour increments and can be paired with an observation lesson. This is when a student observes another student’s driving lesson from the backseat of the training vehicle.
Students must pass both a written classroom final exam and an in-vehicle evaluation to successfully complete their Driver Education Program. If the student is unable to pass the exam in two attempts, they must retake the classroom phase of training at a cost of $200
To be eligible for the road test, students must complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice (including at least 10 hours at night) in addition to their Driver Education coursework.
For over 22 years, Top Driver has been committed to keeping our roads safe offering state-certified Driver Education classes for teens and adults across the midwest.
Enroll in an Approved Driver Education Course. Teens must be at least 15 years old to start. Sign up for a state-approved course, which includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training.

A hard copy certificate of completion is not mandatory. Prior to visiting a Secretary of State Facility to apply for a driver’s license, completion of driver education must be updated/posted to the applicant’s driving record.
Students must hold their permit for a minimum of 9 months from the date of issue. Additional requirements can be viewed on the Secretary of State Facility Checklist.
All 18, 19, 20-year-olds are required to complete a six-hour adult driver education course before obtaining an Illinois driver’s license, if the person has not previously held a driver’s license or successfully completed the classroom portion of a traditional driver education course.

To be eligible for in-car training, students must be at least 18 years old and have a valid Illinois Instruction Permit, Illinois Driver’s License, or a Driver’s License issued by your country of origin (International Driver’s Licenses are not accepted in Illinois). Students from out of the country may drive on their country of origin license for no more than 90 days after entering the country.
If you do not currently have a permit, we recommend taking our 6-hour online course to prepare for the Written Permit Exam at the Illinois Secretary of State’s office.

3 years ago Experiencia negativa: This our 3rd child getting drivers Ed from top driver the staff are nice no complaints But the top driver system itself needs work Very difficult to reschedule a missed class that I can live with but trying to schedule a road/driving lesson is stressful and upsetting. Have to sign online a designated date to setup lesson days but if 5 min late logging in all the dates are full/ unavailable Now we have to go 2 different location to go once a month for driving lesson (ONCE A MONTH) If they cannot handle overflow of students they should not accept new students that is beyond their control with the staff at hand. Luckily this is our last child But if I had more child that needed drivers Ed I would diffidently not send them to Top Driver Good luck Top driving school with this nonsense system

I am happy that your teen had a good experience with their classroom instruction and am sorry that you are frustrated with our scheduling system. As you are aware we did have an issue with the number of students who chose not to schedule their driving lessons even though they were certainly able to and finally decided that they should sign up to drive. As a company we have made many adjustments to accommodate the student demand including: cancelling new classes to allow instructors to focus on behind the wheel lessons and putting a pause on various other teen programs for the same reason, and our management team is out in the field daily instructing students on their drives. Additionally we have invested in recruiting efforts for instructors via online job boards and employee referrals which is certainly paying off now that people wish to return to work. The Secretary of State mandates a training period of anywhere from 4 - 10 weeks for a new instructor to start behind the wheel so it is a time intensive process as one should hope when your teen is behind the wheel.

4 years ago Experiencia negativa: Top driver is currently understaffed, and we can't book driving lessons which we paid a premium for. The response via email and calls has always been " check back regularly for cancellations". It is terrible that we can't book driving lessons as required and we paid for. I have emailed many times, and get standard canned response (keep checking). I will be contacting Better business bureau soon if this doesn't get resolved. I would not recommend them until they get this fixed.
Mr. Bisbikis, we understand your frustration and please understand that we are doing all that we can to provide additional behind the wheel availability. We are consolidating locations and reducing class offerings both of which will allow our current instructors to spend additional time driving with Northbrook students. We have new hires in various stages of our training pipeline in addition to continuously recruiting new hires on job boards. We appreciate your patience as we work toward building our staff back up to pre-COVID levels. Thank you very much.
4 years ago Experiencia negativa: Top Driver messed up pretty bad with my son's account. He completed all the required coursework and passed the final exam. Somehow Top Driver's systems didn't see that he took nad passed the exam. Thankfully, my son took a proud photo of the computer screen showing his final exam passing score. After not receiving the letter of completion from the state, I called Top Driver again. Turns out that it takes several weeks for the local Top Drive office to send scores to the head office, who then submits them to the state. A few weeks later, still no letter. Called again, turns out nobody sent the scores again. Finally got the letter of completion a week later. Now, I've been unable to schedule his final driving test (my son prefer to take his test with Top Drive instead of at the Secretary of State's office). In September I was told that all appointments were take and to call back on 10/15 when December appointments open up. I called 10/15 and was told that Top Driver is no longer administering driving tests, but because of my unique circumstance they would schedule my son, but that a local manager form the office would have to call me to do that. It's now two weeks (10/28) and several calls to Top Driver and I have yet to get a call back from the local manager. When I called today the only thing they were able to do is send a "high importance" message to the local manager.
We apologize for the issue with your son's account and have taken steps to ensure this does not happen in the future. Due to the number of students who have at last started signing up for their drives we have suspended the Cooperative Road Testing to create more in-vehicle lesson time for students currently completing the program. I understand that our Regional Manager reached out to you last week and that your son's lesson has been scheduled to your satisfaction and that he will be able to obtain his license once he turns 16. Again, we are sorry that this happened and appreciate your patience. Thank you very much.

4 years ago Experiencia fantástica: Top Driver is easily the best driving company I have ever worked with. The instructors were professional, great teachers, and best of all they were kind. If you mess up on one little thing, they don’t get upset but they help you learn how to fix your mistake. She was nervous that the examiner would be mean but he was quite the opposite very friendly very positive, which relieved her anxiety and had a successful test It definitely lowers the anxiety of these kids when they have someone warm and friendly assessing them and encouraging them. 4 years ago Experiencia fantástica: Top Driver is hands down one of the best driver’s education facilities. I have Instructor Maddy and she is amazing. She explains all the driving maneuvers very well. Every time I sit in the car for my lesson, she gives a rundown of the agenda and goals for the day. As we drive, she gives great pointers on things to work on as well as encouragement to get better at certain skills that you may be struggling in. I highly recommend Top Driver! I honestly believe that if I had done the driving program through my school, I wouldn’t have been able to get the same level of instruction and professionalism that I receive through Top Driver.

Their customer service, from the staff on the phone to the CEO, is unparalleled. Both contacted me back to answer my questions and provide assurance about their program due to COVID. The program price is also lower than area competitors. I highly recommend.

Additionally, the website for scheduling driving lessons is great and easy to use. We also like being able to have lessons at any location, home pickup/dropoff and school pickup. 4 daughters have all gone through top driver now. And they are all good drivers. Enough said
